  1. yes, you can keep your current /boot partiton (provided that the current grub install has its own /boot partiton)just add the gentoo kernel to that /boot partiton, and edit the config accordingly.
  2. It seems that the UK tranding standards caught a company selling the free and open software Mozilla Firefox on CD. (somthing that is completely legal provided any changes are made open source) Then preceeded to confescate all the CD's and inform the Mozilla foundation. After the ebarrasment of Mozilla ( a 3 person company ) having to give trading standards a lesson on the Law, trading standards official commented that its very hard to enforce anti-piracy, when Mozilla is giving firefox away for free... Read the article, its quite humerous http://www.thetimes.co.uk/ my fave part...
  3. POSIX dictates that special device files like this should all go in the /dev/ directory. Why doesnt MS follow even the simple rules, it must be obviouse that having these secial device files in every folder will be hazardous..just imagine if this was the case with unix, and you made a copy of an email called hda.goodbye partiton table
  4. 404 It seems that history is beeing re-written, and in the new history, the info was never leaked, and chockolate rassions went up to 30 grams (from 50 gramms) << 1984 joke >> Joking Aside... It seems Yahoo is still hosting the Story http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  5. If you know any builders who have done any work in offices, ask them if they have any "grey cable"A friend of mine had been working clearing out an office builng, he saved al the cable (he didnt know what it was) It was Cat-5.i managed to borrow a Crimper to attach the end sockets.. now i have 50 meters of cat-5, and it only cost me 1£
  6. Wired Ethernet:£10 per machine that does not already have an ethernet network card.+ £15 for a boradband router router (also acts as a switch, and allows shared internet)Alternativle Wired Ethernet,£10 per machine that doesnt already have ethernet cardJust connect thwm both with CROSSOVER cat5 ethernet cable directly, no router or swtich.(no sharde internet)Wireless:£35 Wireless Access Point (allows shared internet connection)£15 per computer that does not already have a wireless network card.Alternative:£15 per computer that does not have a wireless card.NO wireless access point ( called a Ad-hoc network, no shared internet)basically, it will cost anywhere between almost free, if both machines already have ethernet cards.and £65 if you ned to buy two wireless cads and an access point.
  7. i disagree. gentoo uses masks to control how bleeding edge / how stable you ant your system to be. you may have trouble with the ~ARCH masks (where arch is x86, amd64 or Ppc) these are more upto-date, but still in testing. but most people go with the default mask (x86 / amd64 / ppc ) which is quite well tested. and in the rare occasion there is a bug, it is usually fixed quite quickly.. more often that not, the bug is fixed by the time you find it, and an update with "emerge --sync" will correct the issue. This is true, but sometimes, because of gentoo's bleeding edge design, the problem is the opposite way round. For Example....I recently bought a new wireless card. There is a driver for this card, but it is not yet in the linux kernel. the card is based on the rt2500 chipset. in other distro's, to get this card working you need to install the kernel source code, patch the kernel source code, then build the driver, linking it againsed the current tunning kernel source code /binaries. in gentoo, to get this card installed, all i had to do was emerge rt2500 To cut a long story short, Gentoo is like Marmite. Nobody just likes Gentoo, You will either Love it, and never go back to any other distro (like me) Or you will absolutly hate it.
  8. My wireless card performes much better than advertised, i assume companys are made to do this to keep the FCC from jumping on them.. (same reason a bakers dozen is 13 i believe)your card is advertised as (indoors)70M (230 ft.) @ 2 Mbps91M (300 ft.) @ 1 MbpsDouble what you say you need.If securety is not an issue, then the only advice i can really give, is to avoid USB wireless clients like the plague.I think the card you posted will work fine.. maybe to be on the safe side, send the customer support your query about range.. If it then fails, there is no way they can reject a claim for a refund.
  9. I just bought a MSI PC54G2 based on the rt2500 chip (supported by linux if thats important) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I would recomend this card. One thing to look out for is security. You may have heard about WEP encryption, this is now totally useless, anyone with access to a linux operating system, and a network card that supports packet injection under linux (which many do) can crack your wireless key in 3 minutes (and its very very very easy, basically need to type 3 commands into the console, and its all automated) This card supports WPA, which is a much more secure system. (although still not bullet proof) Try to find a card AND access point that supports WPA. I had a quick look at the card link you posted. It has a larger range than the card i recomented, but is much slower and onlysupports WEP, not WPA.
  10. Hey guys, My friend and I are trying to create a 2 computer Ad-hoc (no Access Point) network.Because 801.11g pci cards are so cheap (we got the MSI brand, based on thr rt2500 chip (supported by Linux nativly)) without really knowing is our two houses are in range. He lives a few houses away, well inside the 300meter range of the cards in open space, but obviously transmiting through a few layers of brick is shortening it quite a bit.We setup one card to run as an emulated AP (access point) with SSID broadcasting, and tried to get a connection working.we set both cards to transmit on maximum power, and at the slowest available bitrate ( 1Mbps )The frustrating thing is, the connection only works at night, a few hours after the sun goes down, and stops working shortly after the sun rises again. Also, the connection is very sincitive to moving the areal, just a few inches will kill the connection. The fact that the connection works at night leads me to surgest that we are on the absolute borderline of the card working. And the increace in tempreature of the air, (which i know to reduce transmition range) along with the increaced noise of others in my areas using wlan, the cards limits are pushed too far and the connection is lost.So.. i want to ask you.. Without spending much money, and without the need for too much skill, how can i increace the range.the antenna that comes with my card is has a small 2 Dbi gain, but higher gain areals, especially highly directional ones are quite expensive.I've seen the pringle can design, but cannot find the parts needed, and online retails require me to buy in bulk.Ive also had a little success building a satelite-like reflactor dish out of silver foil, but it seems to need to be re-aimed every few minutes... Possably every time my neighbours move whatever it is the signal is bouncing off, a car, the fridge door, who knows. Also, ive been reading about antenna harmonics, and decided its just too complicated, but what if, i just build a hige copper structure, maybe the size of a chair, and used that as an antena, and just prey that whatever gain i lose in harmonics, i retrive in the sheer bulk and size.ANYWAY, enough babbeling.. does anyone have any ideas for a penniless student type, with little skill soldering / welding, who mainly just wants to play with wireless just for the fun of it.. ?Thanks.
  11. that motherboard is just ALL cpu fan, i guess the micro0-atx makes the fan look bigger.i bought a similar system about a year ago, its crazy how cheap really powerfull machines are when you build em yourself.
  12. I have no problem with applications beeing optimised for intel or AMD.i believe windows is optimised for intel, as intel has been more widely used.i also have no problem with companys striking promotion deals with each other. But this deal is about Skype delibratly crippleing itself if you didnt buy intel. For all of you who say this type of comeptition is fine, and does not harm technology, i ask you..What if Microsoft decided to change MS windows, so that it never allowed processor useage to rise above 10 % on AMD and Intel chips, and refused to do hardware accelerated graphics with ATI and NVIdia cards.and only worked properly with WinChip processors, and SiS intergrated graphics.(okay, i know this is overkill, but im making a point)The advanced technology or AMD and Intel would die, in favor of vastly inferior WinChip.same with Nvidia and ATI.Competition is heathy, it improves technology. This is cheating... its like when all the losers in a monopoly game gang up on the winner, and smacks him/her over the head with the board, and shove hotels up his/her nose.maybe im too much of an idealist.
  13. http://news.a.com.com/ When you run Skype on your home computer, skype checks to see what Processor you are using. If you are using an Intel Pentium, you are allowed to make full use of skype, having a conferance of 10 people. However, if you are using AMD, skype limits you to 5 !!! Its a deal struck between Intel and Skype. HOW is this even legal ??? Microsoft has ben sued millions for bundling software ( Media Player ) Can you imagine what would hapen if the bus company limited the distance you were allowed to ride based on race. I cant see somthing like skype limits influincing amny peoples decision on what CPU to buy.. and probably wont have much of an impact on the market. But this just shows how low some companys are willing to sink. Also, Skype have a linux version.. i would be interested to see how they are planning on accuratly detecting the cpu manufacutre on a linux box, especially when the kernel could be tweaked quite easily to lie about such things.
  14. Wwe dont support software cracking here. There are plenty of Free PDF viewers, and editors around, use one of them.
  15. yeah, they have been doing this for ages. its not just a crazy one off thing.I tried to merge this topic with the origonal.. but searching for keywords like "free" and "ubuntu" in the linux section returns a good billion or 2 posts .Personally, i dont understand al the ubuntu hype, but i usually get a cd or 2 delivered when they release a major new version, just to see whats happening in the non Gentoo world.
  16. Ooops, i remember beeing serverely mislead by such a statement when i was a linux newb. When i say that you dont require a boot partition, i dont mean that you will no-longer require the data stored on the boot partiton. without a boot partiton, every thing that would normally go into the boot partiton goes instead into the main root partiton.
  17. dont forget the pasics... if you ever need information on a Unix based system, use the man (short for manual command) running man rpm will tell you everything you need to know, and tons more about package installation.
  18. i disagree. you dont NEED a boot partiton, but they make things more simple when dealing with more than one Operating system. the boot partiton holds the kernel, and possably any information the computer needs to boot an operating system. on my system i have... 100 megabyte /boot/ partiton. 60 gig / root partiton (for gentoo linux) 1 gig swap partiton (for gentoo linux) 15 gig for windowsXP ( no-longer need since i installed Cedega (for HalfLife 2)) 5 gig for FreeBSD Unix ( installed out of curiocity, preffered gentoo ) the boot partiton is capable of booting all 3 of my operating systems. because the boot partiton is seperate from my operating systems, i can re-move or un-install any operating system, without damaging the ability to boot others. If you dont intend on multi-booting.. only having one operating system on disk, then you dont need a boot partiton. Linux will work perfectly well with only one partiton (although i would recomend a swap partiton, even though linux has not yet needed it on my machine(i have 1 gig of ram) for windows users, the concept of partions can be confusing.. but imagine this.. imagine if you could format C:\Documents without effection C:\Windows\System on MS windows. thats what partitons are all about.
  19. Its insane.I watched a TV program in England called "50 years of f**k".its was about cencorship, and how tolerances for swearing have changed over the last 50 years.Basically, peoples right to free speach ( to use offensive language, or offensive images ) versus respect for others.Anyway, one shocking part of this documentary, was an interview with the first person to swear on BBC ( brittish Television )this was before it was even Ok to swear late at night. This man was flooded with hate mail, and death threats. All he did was say " F**k " on TV.and many people thought that death was a suitable punishment.one POLITICIAN even called for the re-introduction of the death sentence (by hanging)
  20. thats the point, music with headphones doesnt need to be loud enough to case pain for it to be amaging to your hearing.
  21. if your router supports port forwarding, you could setup servers, remote logins etc etc etc.My home computer runs giFT daemon. it is a p2p file shareing program built with a server-client architecture.from wherever i am, if i have internet access, i can ssh into my home computer, and tell it what to download.when i get home, its finished. Also, you could go crazy and run your own email servers, unlimited inbox :)and if someone sends you a file with a huge attachment, you downt need to download it, as it was uploaded directly to your machine.ALSO, i find that i can keep my email servers more spam free than my ISP provided email.Or.. even cooler.. run a TOR node. and an annonymour web site !!!with tor, your web server is completely annonymous. its imporrably to trace where the real server is.there are so many cool things you can do.. (assuming you have atleast one Unix / Linux machine on your network)
  22. But some like music loud.. very loud.some of favouite songs sound okay when played quietly... but some music has just got to be as LOUD as possable. If the ipod's max volum is known to cause damage after only 20 somthing seconds, then why ake it that loud.It is a bit silly trying to sue over it.. but still, companys should take some responcibility.
  23. I can just imagine it now, hearing your grandma talking about a new product invented by google called Linux, than has only just been created. 1,000,000 times worse than the GNU/Linux naming controversy. Out of all the distro's to base it off, why Ubuntu... MacOSX is a very easy to use operating system, but its based off FReeBSD (a very difficult to use Server OS) to make a user friendly distro, they dont need to start with a user friendly distro. start with a powerfull distro, and improve the user friendlyness.. or better yet, design a completely new distro from scratch.
  24. sigh.... BOREING,,,,Google has announced that they are working on relasing a desktop Operating system...The Operating system they will use.. GNUThe Kernel they will use... Linux.Basically, a Linux distro...A new Exciting Distro ???Nope... they are basing it on Ubuntu !!!Boreing Boreing Boreing.Ubuntu.. quite easy to use..However... there is nothing special about it.Im betting it will be yet anouther average, non sticking out distro to add to the pool.maybe a massive success because of Googles advertiseing power, and googles huge buisness name...but i dont see it sticking out with the truely innovative distro's.
  25. not really, it doesnt affect me at all. by definition of *average* there will always be intelligent, and dumb people. and every now and again there will be someone sufficiantly intelligent to socially engineer dumb people into doing somthing.... well.. dumb. then, when you facter computers into the equation, where new users (even the most intelligent) are usually computer dumb.. well.... The only real solution to those 99.9% is either constant mass education.. OR to protect the users from themselves with some kind of password.. but following the later up will just lead to anouther windows vs Unix argument.. LOL.
