  1. Nice little freeware program for doing that-> http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It's nice for the audiobooks I get with the "<really long site name> - <book title> - 1of14" I can replace the site name with a blank, and change it to just "<book title> - 1 of 14" So if you have those digital camera pictures or whatnot with filenames like J00001.jpg, J000002.jpg... you can get rid of the "J000" and have 01.jpg, 02.jpg...etc
  2. Doom 3 would be more enjoyable to me if I didn't need to set all the graphics settings to "LOW" to get a decent frame rate.Note to self: Upgrade your ram The game's pretty spooky. Always has your adrenaline pumping. The engine's lighting does a good job at creating the atmosphere needed for a nice horror game. I'd love to see someone do a total conversion of System Shock 2 using the Doom 3 engine!! I'd also like to note how developers are letting really stupid/easy-to-fix bugs get through to the final product. I had to edit one of the config files to get a performance boost... Something the developers could have done before to save the thousands of people from doing it. Deus Ex 2 had something similar if I recall... Hitman: Contracts had a bug with Post-Filter and the sniper rifles they needed to patch... It's like devs are relying too heavily on patches nowadays
  3. Doing a search on Yahoo's "hotjobs," I'd say the average salary can range between $45k-$130k, depending on the position you get. Something like "Sr. CAD Manager" is going to earn a lot more than just a "CAD Operator."
  4. Check out their site: https://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis/ Basically, it just scans your registry, allowing you to delete entries you think might be causing problems. It shows both legit and non-legit programs, so use with caution.
  5. ***Ooh, yea, that's the name of it! I kept thinking it was "HackThis" instead of "HijackThis"Yep, I used that to get rid of the porn dialer he had. When I see him again, I'll get a log file and post it here. Thanks kelp
  6. WOW! And I thought he hadn't responded to my PM! Thanks for the link! and thank you, OpaQue, for the detailed response One of the problems 2w.ca said they had was that Google thought someone was cheating their ad system somehow (spamming?) and suspended the account, and Google refused to talk about it with him to solve the problem. As for ads on this site: I think it's well organized. No popups is always a good thing, and there aren't so many ads that I can't navigate around the site.
  7. I have one other suggestion to add. Now I'm not accusing anyone of this, but avoid porn and warez sites if you really don't want any nasty little bugs on your computer. "Every popup starts a new virus." From experience, if you're just casually surfing along, that's not the case... Unless you end up at a "high risk" sites (a la pr0n), where you're likely to find a lot of code trying to screw up your computer. Surfing the net is analogous to sexual intercourse. Sure, you can use contraceptives (ie. firewall, antivirus, etc), but avoiding risky behavior altogether will reduce the risk of pregnancy (ie. spyware, virus, etc). In other words, it's still possible to get a trojan with a Trojan Ok, bad joke...
  8. My friend tried Ad-Aware before asking me for help. That didn't fix what he had either. Very odd. I'm probably going to end up formatting his harddrive if it comes down to it. It'd be a lot easier anyways
  9. Ugh, that sounds annoying. Animation Shop, all you need to do is hit paste and you can have yourself a nice little animated picture What's also nice about it is the image transitions it has. Fades, slashes, wipes... It's got em all! Great for when I'm doing introductions to movies and whatnot.
  10. A friend of mine has something stuck on his computer that's changing his homepage. I ran Spybot and Norton Antivirus, and the only thing that came up was an unrelated exploit (that I patched up right away). I found a porn dialer installed (that wasn't detected by the above mentioned programs ) I had it fixed and had the homepage coming up normally, but he said after I left it changed it back again. I'll try this little trick you've posted above and see if that works... Whatever he's got on his computer is baffling me
  11. I use Photoshop for photo editing, and Jasc Animation Shop for animation. I love Animation Shop for the ease of being able to open and save AVI files, and its "Animation Wizard." I often take clips from videos and movies to make little animated avatars for forums, and the people there always compliment them . I'd post one here, but I don't think people with 56k modems would like them too much. Buddy Icons are also fun to experiment with->
  12. Linux would be my preferred OS, but Windows has several things going in its favor.DirectX is probably one of the reasons Linux hasn't taken over more home users' computers. The only support I've seen for Linux is WineX, and they charge users to use it. That cuts out a majority of potential Linux users.Another problem I've experienced is trouble with Linux hardware drivers. I've either had to scour the net for hard to find drivers, or my hardware wasn't supported at all. As a matter of fact, I'm stuck writing this post on my Windows partition because my wireless card isn't supported in the version of Linux I have installed. Finally, the learning curve for installing various programs (all the compiling and whatnot) is a bit much for an average user. RPMs make installing programs easier, but nothing could be simpler than running a Windows setup program. As far as Windows versions go, I'll stick with Windows 2000. Although I love how easy it is for XP to install new hardware, I haven't had nearly the trouble with Win2k as I did with XP.
