What Network Chat Program Do You Use ? sending messages
Hercco replied to haseeb1405241472's topic in Computer Networks
Now people like to chat. They like to type messages, use smilieys, send each other dirty pictures and links to dirty sites. But yeah, I agree that this is a bit of reinventing the wheel. By which I don't mean telephones but IRC. Actually this kind of lan chat thing makes a great network programming project/excercise. Socket programming is way easier than you might think and fun to do. Best thing is that you can tailor it to your liking. Okay it'd be reinventing the wheel but in a fun and educating way. -
Well the current high end graphics processors do benefir from the higher bandwidth of PCI-X. That is they can handle more data than the AGP 8x bus is able to transfer. It's nothing huge, but it explains the difference in benchmarks. But it's not like a top-notch computer with AGP bus and a top-notch graphics card in it wouldn't run Doom III or Half-Life 2 enough well. PCI-X might be a neccessity for the guy who needs to have the biggest 3dMark score in the block, but for a gamer AGP is still alive and well.

What Is The Best Brand Of Harddisk? Who has longer life?
Hercco replied to bryandel's topic in Hardware Workshop
Only harddisk that has broken in my use was Seagate. Currently I have three samsung drives in use and have had no problems. When I bought my first Samsung I had consern it to be noisy, they were generally concerned that, but in practise I did not notice any difference to other drives. I've had a very same drive in active use for several years now and it's working like charm. Because of the good experience and Samsung's rather customer friendly pricing policy, my next drive and drive after that was Samsung too. Yep, the Koreans definately know what they are doing. -
Windows 95 Ibm Aptiva format gone wrong
Hercco replied to JohnNitro's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I would recommend getting Windows 98 SE for it. Windows 95 is 10 years old operating system and has not been supported for years. It probably has security holes like swiss cheese. Windows 98SE is still (depending on the language, I think) somewhat supported. Meaning that MS should have patched at least the biggest vulnerabilities. Also it shouldn't be much heavier for your computer to run. Win95 doesn't have support for such as simple things as USB, which would probably be nice if that computer is actually in use. Other great option would be to install ultra light linux to it. Debian, for example is easy to install with light configurations. Modern desktop environments like KDE and GNOME are probably way too heavy for your machine to run. -
MS SQL server is still stubbornly clinging on that fourth place in the SANS Top 20 Vulnerabilities list. I have no actual knwoledge on security of the MySQL but database servers in general tend to be a bit risky. Keeping them in DMZ sounds like a good idea. Due to it's open sourcesness and high popularity MySQL should be way safer than MS SQL.

Web Design: Complex Or Simple? Which is better?
Hercco replied to everydaysushi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
For my own sites I never do flash. I tend to keep changing content all the time and with flash this'd be a bit more difficult in it self plus I'd have to do changes to two places. I am not a huge fan of flash sites. If well done and in right kind of sites it's okay and I often opt to view the flash version of a site if asked, but many times the flash stuff is nothing amazing and thus kind of pointless. Flash is nice for sites like official band websites. People often go these sites to get to know the music and the musicians better and usually are not in hurry. Instead of speed a more pleasant viewing experience is more important. Also band websites (with flash) are usually done by professionals which usually means good quality. But still, a flashless or a "lo-fi" version of a site should always be available. Sometimes people want just check some facts and don't need that 2 minutes loading flash menu. Sometimes people a) don't bother to don't know how or c) are not allowed to install flash plugin. And, like earlier mentioned, we shouldn't forget people using handheld devices. -
PCI-X is the way to go if you're in for the definite high end. If you want a decent system with reasonable amount of money AGP is still the choice. It is simple as that, it just takes some time for new technology to reach every home.

IMO there are only two choices in technology for making online games: Java and Flash. To make a game it is absolutely neccessary to have knowledge in programming. For a template... well I don't think that'd make very good games. I'd say your best choice is to try to find threads about game programming and/or using the technologies I mentiond above. Failing that, I'd recommend starting a thread with specific title (ie. "Teach me the basics of Flash")

Stop Spam Harvesters add a Honey Pot to your site

Very interesting project. I joined and am now scattering the links all over my site. The idea is great and it's really easy to participate and it doesn't take webspace nor bandwidth much. -

Hercco replied to r3d1405241470's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Is it just me or is this all to easy to do? Dammit by just using a right class id you can run scripts even if the user has opted not to do so. Did I misunderstand something or are things this bad with MS? -
Linux Users: The Best Linux Software?
Hercco replied to MajesticTreeFrog's topic in Websites and Web Designing
#!'s list was good but I'm on the emacs side of the never-ending debate . And I'm just somehow more used to TCSH instead of bash (just because my university had it as default shell). And on the matter of email client I agree 100%. -
I don't think I'll ever buy any operating system. I could pay for packaging, manual and support and upgrading service but not for the actual system. Even if it was an operating system with superb searching features .

Umm could it be the database table prefix that it is asking? The tables are of this form in the database <prefix>_posts If this is the case, 'phpBB' should be fine.

My advice would be to first try to get some idea of relational database designing. The basic concepts of how you should store your data. For example, in relational DBs you should avoid redundancy. It's also important to know about joining tables and such. For this, I'd recommend finding a book of the basics of databases. Here's some: (grabbed these from our universitys database course webpages)Fred McFadden, Jeffrey Hoffer, Mary Prescott: Modern Database Management, Addison-Wesley, 5th Edition, 1999. C.J. Date: An Introduction to Database Systems, Addison-Wesley, 6th Edition, 1995. Thomas Connolly, Carolyn Begg, Anne Strachan: Database Systems, Addison-Wesley, 2nd Edition, 1998. Ullman, J.D.& Widom J. A First Course in Database Systems, Prentice Hall, 1997.After you have some basic knowledge go forth and try it in practise. It is really not that difficult as it might sound, you just need some basic info to get started.

Where To Get Domains For Cheap? And what companies you can trust...
Hercco replied to Hercco's topic in Computer Networks
Thanks for the reply all of you. Yeah, GoDaddy seems to be the place where I do my domain shopping. $8.95/year for a dot com is realyl a bargain. I might just aswell grab the dot net too.And paypal is great for this. I have somewhat a problem of giving my credit card number to other than the companies I know I can trust thoroughly. It's not that I suspect they'll misuse it, it's just if their systems aren't secure enough... -
Problem wuth that kind of system is that... If you promise one of your advertisers say 15% of the time. That meaning that of 100 page loads their ad should be displayed 15 times. But what happens when you add new advertisers to your system? You only have 100% of page loads and if you add more advertisers the percentage of other's ads has to drop. Anyways, let's say that you have set number of advertisers. What you can simply do is save table like this: ad1 -> 15 ad2 -> 30 ad3 -> 50 ad4 -> 100 There ad1 and ad2 would have 15% chanhe of being vieved, ad3 20% and ad4 50% change. Than just create random numbers ranging from 1 to 100 and loop through your table like this: $rand = rand(1, 100);foreach ( $ads as $ad_number => $limit ){ if ( $rand <= $limit ) { $ad_to_view = $ad_number; break; }}

What's Happening To Floppy Discs? The End of An Era
Hercco replied to sky1405241473's topic in Hardware Workshop
Floor tiles is a new idea but the other's, I believe, are already done widely. By the way, if you give floppys to babys to chew, remember to remove the metal protector first to avoid cuts. I am not completely gotten rid of floppys. Actually I thought I was when I build my 2nd computer from old part I had lying around. I didn't have spare flopyp drive and thought I don't need one. Now there's somethingg wrong with it's BIOS (I hope so, if not it's the hardware) and I need floppy to flash the bios. -
C# and the whole dot net is Microsofts latest attempt to tie programmers to their operating systems.

You must place your script files to cgi-bin directory. This can be done with FTP or from Cpanels file manager. Cgi-bin is located under public_htmlAnd don't forget to set the permissions right for your scripts.

I personally use Windows 2k and Debian. I also administer one system running runnign Mandrake. Both Linuxes are great and Win 2k is so far best OS from Redmond.

What is a "paid to read" script? Does it have something to do with email services?

The Name Game Whats the basis for the name Astahost?
Hercco replied to hashbang's topic in Web Hosting Support
Mine is the most boring. See my real name is Herkko. Replace K's with C's. I'm finnish and in finnish C's can be said exactly like K's. Letter C is classified as "foreign" letter so are B, Q, W, Z. Foreign letters are letters that appear in Finnish alphabet (which is same as english with the addition of Å, Ä and Ö) but are not used in real finnish words. It is very common here to pick your online nicks based on your real name, replacing some letters with "foreign" letter which sound close the same. V->W. S->Z, etc. -
The difference between SDram and DDR ram is simple. In SDram bus data is transfered on an up-pulse (or down-pulse, depends on which direction you watch it ) while in DDR on both up and down. This means that DDR transfers twice the data SDram does given that both are running at same clockrate, meaning the real clockrate here. This is from which DDR's name comes from. No it has nothing to do with former eat germany. Dual (or double) data rate. As in practise DDR transfers double the data as sdram it is basically equivalent of sdram running at double clockrate. So sdram runnign at 200Mhz is equally fast as 100MHz DDR. This is theoritical of course. Because of this DDR is often labeled double the rate that it actually runs (or is capable of running). So your DDR 400 runs at 200MHz in reality. However some motherboards (I believe including Asus) display the actual clockrate instead of sdram compared one.
