Wireless isn't that expensive... Much cheaper than replacing mothberboards twice a summer. :)Besides, the speed certainly isn't an issue. You have LOS between your houses? If you construct strongly directing antennas (much easier than you might think) and use the g standard (and illegal high transmission power), you can reach very high datarates. But remember... with WLAN too you should be using lightning protection.

This kind of is in topic....I'm actually taking a advanced course on databases. Not SQL 101 but getting more into inside the dbms's. We've had so far three lectures and the lecturer hasn't mentioned the open-source databases once, although Postgre and MySQL (especially) are really widely used and one would think it's easier to get under their hoods them being OS and everything. No it's just Oracle, Oracle, Oracle...

Those featres look really handy and well done. I like that Apple doesn't just try to follow other systems and try to do their things better. That's no way to gain ground, but going into new innovations will. I hope these new things will get more people in the Mac world. I'm not in it, but hey anything's better than Windoze.

Compatibility Issues php, xhtml, css and the like...
Hercco replied to chiiyo's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I think I'm a bit of a compatibility nut too. I want people to be able to view my site regardless of their computer/software. However, reaching full compatibility means huge sacrifices from design, and that's where I don't want to go. The line I draw is in CSS support. I think it's safe to assume that people have at least CSS1 compatible browsers. So my opinion is that... yes you go a bit too far with all tables and especially < font > tags. I used to be a in all tables design but I switched to divs and full CSS positioning about years and a half ago. Remember that if the less than a per cent of your visitors who don't have CSS compatible browsers should still be able to read the page, even if the menus and colours are not on their right places. -
What Is: Rss? A short brief about RSS
Hercco replied to madman9999's topic in Websites and Web Designing
The letters RSS mean a little different thing depending on source, I don't believe there is an official name for it, is there? Really Simple Syndication seems to be the most popular but "RDF Site Summary" and "Rich Site Summary" are also used and in fact what I still think when the acronym RSS comes up. They all mean the same thing, just different names. The "RDF Site Summary" is in my opinion the "most official" and RDF is an official W3C acronym for "Resource Description Framework". This is also why RSS files are sometimes named with .rdf extension. -
I'm also a Soulseek user. For the very same reason as Posiordie; the rare albums. Soulseek might not be optimal for downloading (in terms of download speed and searching) but the network has the best collection of rare records. As I mainly listen alternative music from independent record labels downloading is the best way to hear new stuff. I'm not a big bad music pirate, I in fact buy quite a lot of music. For other stuff, edonkey network and bit torrent are the best in my opinion. Bittorrent as a protocol is superior, but finding that specific file isn't very easy. Edonkey (I've used emule and xmule clients) however has a good search and there are quite a lot of files around. The whole protocol is designed big file transfers in mind and thus this is where it excels. For torrents I use BitComet as a client. I've tried others (Azareus and BitTornado) but I somehow stuck with BitComet. Recently I haven't been downloading much stuff with it though... Most of my favourite torrent sites have been shutdown.

I DO like Opera... I've had this conversation with many Firefox and IE users. This is what they usually argument: - Site compatibility... Opera still has problems with many sites. It's not a lot talked about but practice has shown that. - "The side bar annoys". A pointless point, you don't have to use it if you don't like it. Might be an excuse but several people has mentioned this. - "Don't like tabs". Many people think that you can only use Opera with tabbed view. This of course is false, the tabbed view is just the default setting. - "Smooth scrolling". This is the funniest one A certain IE user claims that Opera (and FF for that matter) don't have as good smooth scrolling as IE does. A bloody good reason to stick with the Bugsplorer. - Memory usage. Now this is a real concern. Latest versions of Opera have become quite a momery hogs. Mine currently running takes 142MB (10 tabs open, using news and RSS, no transfers).

Ignition: what I believe qwijibow meant was Linux media players. Media Player classic is for Windows for which there is no problem with media players, if everything else fails Windows users still will have MS's WMP. Yes, software patents really suck *bottom*. It's bloody obvious that all this is just playing into hands of Microsoft and other big software companies. Them being able to take out OS software like Mplayer won't end up benefitting anyone. Not even the big companies. But who end up suffering the most is us, the users.

Yeah. Just create a FTP account and set the directories you want him to be able to use. I did this for my image gallery so that my buddy could FTP photos from his cell phone. For a blog... you either could install a blogging software that supports mutiple users. That is you want the posts to appear on the same page. A model example of this kind of software is WordPress. It can be installed from Fantastico. Other option would be to give him a completely own blog. If the blog software uses database, create a database for him. Just create own user/password combination for him. For cpanel access... I'm afraid you can only have one user/password pair. You can't also "split" the cpanel.

Film Vs Digital Which camp are you?
Hercco replied to chiiyo's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
A digital camera man here. Before I got a digital camera, I barely never photographed anything.I mainly photograph 10-30mm miniatures I, or someone else, has painted. For this task a digital camera with macro mode is the way to go. Resolution is not a problem as long as you have at least 2 megapixels. I usualyl take pics at 1600x1200 resolution and then scale down them heavily. It is kind of pointless having the picture several times the size of the actual model. Thus the resolution is more than enough. Then of course there's the fact that I publish my stuff at web. Digital camera elimanates the scanning phase of the process. -
A Little Tidbit About Google Security Exchange Comission
Hercco replied to NilsC's topic in Search Engines
If at basis we (humans that is) were mathematically more talented, like so that we'd know quite lot of mathematics right when we are born (ie. math would be like breathing to us) we'd probably use Euler's number as the base number in our numerical system, instead of number of our fingers. My physics teacher used to like to preach about that and I kinda believe him. -
If anyone needs Gmail accounts I got 50 invitations. Please don't flood this thread with requests, PM or IM me instead.

You've got the live bookmark added and it's pointing to a actual RSS feed? Then just go to bookmarks or the boomarks toolbar and put you mouse over the lve bookmark and wait for the browser to load the RSS items. Then you can click on an item you wish to view. IMO this is not to best way to do RSS reading. The kind of classic method that you can see in SharpReader or Opera is IMO lot more usefull. I have noticed that I barely never read RSS when I'm using Firefox.

On my own sites I have only used phpBB, that being the leading open source, thus being free, board. But I don't think it's the best... First of all the basic board without mods doesn't have all the features that , in my opinion, modern discussion boards should have. Biggest flaw IMO is the lack of subforums and attachments. Then someone's gonna say "just install mods". Yeah, I have. But it's not working as well as I would like to. I have several mods, the categories hierarchy, attachments, few admin panel and member things. This all makes upgrading the board a real pain in the *bottom*. Especially if you add a customed template there. To make things even worse, the old phpBB 2.0 series has had quite a lot of upgrades, mostly because of security issues. Of other forum systems, I have never installed or administered any but from user point of view and from what people have told me vBulletin is the king of the hill. For me, being an avid open source supporter, its a bit hard to admit, but vBulletin really rules. It has all the features I believe you ever need, the version 3 is quite fast and from what I hear quite easily customizable. Other than that I've heard a lot of good things about SMF, mainly it being lightning fast. Also Invision, like right here, is a neat system. ================================== Posts Merged Here - by vujsa ================================== Damn, I can't find the edit button... What I needed to ask in addition was that is UBB (Ultimate Bulletin Board) still alive? It's kinda of legendary system that was in use in many forums when I started posting actively into message boards. I believe it was one of the first to include the kind of forum view that is as default here. I believe it started to diminish in use when php driven systems started to become more populer.

Cheap ADSL Modem Which Compats With Fedora Core?
Hercco replied to musichere's topic in Hardware Workshop
Simply don't buy USB or internal modems. They might and they might not have drivers for linux. And there might be drivers fro Fedore/Rad Hat but what happends if you want to change OS? Instead go for a router that is connected to your computer with ethernet cable. You won't need any drivers on any OS. These devices are a tad more pricey but they are worth it. In addition to being compatible with all OSs they are usually of better make otherwise. Believe me... I've had more than a fair share of problems with USB/internal modems... -
One thing that people don't seem to know that the term WYSIWYG is not just used in graphical design programs or at computer world at all. Actually where I can in touch with this abbreviation was miniature wargaming. You call your troops WYSIWYG is they have the equipment they seem to have.I've also ran into it on other circles.

They probably share a database.

Sounds kind of strange as it doesn't happen everytime...Could it be that you have too high resolution and/or refresh rate? If you suspect this try with lower settings. It might also be good idea to play it safe and check if the card is properly attached to the motherboard and the fan is functional. I doubt this is the issue but its better to play it safe.

Css: Html Special Character As List Style?
Hercco replied to Hercco's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Actually what I should have stated is that this is what I've tried: li:before { content: "Âť";} And it doesn't work when i use UTF-8. And yes this is what I've been using: list-style-image: url('raquo.png'); but it's a bit tricky as I'd like to use different colours in different lists. And besides it's a bit messy solution. So the ACTUAL question is: How to put HTM special characters into CSS content: with them working in with UTF-8. -
I'm addicted to the character » (»). It just looks very neat and works well on lists... But my problem is, how can put HTML special character like » as CSS list-styles? If I just paste the character to the stylesheet in a text editor and use UTF-8 charset on my document, it won't print out. If I user the code » in the CSS file, it won't be shown as the character but the string "»". So is there any way to do this? I absolitely want to keep the UTF-char sets so changing that is not an option.

Here's mine suggestion: Full CSS positioning. Depending on your content and menu items length the code below produces page that resizes the boxes according to the stuff that's inside. If you want them to always to be the same size, just add height properties into the css and overflow: scroll. Here's the code: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>[tab][/tab][tab][/tab]<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1 Strict//EN" "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ xmlns="http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; xml:lang="en-UK">[tab][/tab]<head> <title> Friso's Ultra Cool Site </title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <meta name="language" content="en" /> <style type="text/css"> [tab][/tab] [tab][/tab] body [tab][/tab] { width: 800px; [tab][/tab] } [tab][/tab] #header [tab][/tab] { position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 800px; height: 100px; text-align: center; border: 1px green solid; [tab][/tab] } [tab][/tab] #header h1 [tab][/tab] { font-size: 45pt; color: #d00; [tab][/tab] } [tab][/tab] #menu [tab][/tab] { position: absolute; top: 100px; left: 0px; width: 200px; border: 1px green solid; [tab][/tab] } [tab][/tab] #colored_box [tab][/tab] { background-color: #f00; width: 200px; height: 200px; [tab][/tab] } [tab][/tab] #content [tab][/tab] { position: absolute; top: 100px; left: 200px; width: 600px; border: 1px green solid; [tab][/tab] } </style>[tab][/tab]</head>[tab][/tab] <body> [tab][/tab] [tab][/tab] <div id="header"> <h1>Friso Rules</h1> [tab][/tab] </div> [tab][/tab] [tab][/tab] <div id="menu"> <h5>Menu</h5> <ul> [tab][/tab] [tab][/tab] <li> <a href="">Links</a> </li> [tab][/tab] <li> <a href="">Links</a> </li> [tab][/tab] <li> <a href="">Links</a> </li> [tab][/tab] <li> <a href="">Xisto</a> </li> </ul> <div id="colored_box"> [tab][/tab] Stuff </div> [tab][/tab] </div> [tab][/tab] <div id="content"> <h1>Home</h1> <p> [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah </p> <p> [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah </p> <p> [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah </p> <p> [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah </p> <p> [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah [tab][/tab] Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah </p> [tab][/tab] </div> </body>[tab][/tab][tab][/tab]</html>

Isn't this thread a bit ret... ummm... un-intelligent (wow I've never been more pc) Which is best way to talk? - Voice - Telephone - Online chat - Sign language - Radio - Spanish - Telegraph Anyways I clicked XML because there was no obvious joke option, well maybe except of wap. But we all should get into XML, it's the future. (See how I used italics to make it look like possible joke/sarcasm so that none of you guys can quote me in few years and go "Haha!" )

Well one thing that people often forgets when dealing with HTML (or whatever) outputting scripts is that which the scripts (program wise) are usually quite simple and with modern machines run very fast, but it's the I/O that is the slow thing. So instead of doing like a million echo calls, it's faster to group your stuff together and do just few echos.

I'm right now taking a course of programming for series 60 phones. Who know, I might just write a tutorial here at summer
