  1. No there is really no point in overclocking that much. Other than, like you mentioned, showing off. And I guess it is just as good a hobby than anything else. Although bit expensive That much overclocked systems are not able to run for a long time so server usege is out of question. And besides high clockrate is not the most important factor on server performance.
  2. Haseeb, the thread is about portable, hardware mp3 players, not player software. But year Winamp 5 is great. Not as buggy as winamp 3 and the media library is THE ****.
  3. I'm a huge fan of Games Workshops tabletop games, including Warhamemr 40 000 to which Dawn of War, a strategy game by Relic Ent. is based on.I don't buy lot of games, but DoW was a must! Anyone else into this game?
  4. You mean like a link database system. I use a self made system at my site. At some point I'm going to release it as open source for anyone to use, but at the moment it is not ready for it. It lacks few features that I want but haven't had the time to program yet. If you are intereted I could try to speed up th work and make you a "beat tester" (or whatever) for a public release. If so contect me. Easier option would be probably to go with a script from fantastico : <your site>:2082/frontend/rvblue/addoncgi/main.html?addonname=phpLinks
  5. LMAO! I think you Squrrel get what you deserve. Mini-fridge c'mon...
  6. I had an MP3 player several years ago. That time they were new and fancy things. I had Diamond Rio (one of the first few to get into markets) and had 48MB (yes , sounds funny today but then it was a lot!) card and could play just mp3 files. It had years guarantee which was a good thing since it broke in 9 months. The funniest part of the story was that the store from which I purchased it had only ordered one of these (which I bought) and in 9 months they had managed to lose all information they had on the importer. They could get me a new one and could fix the broken player, so i got my money back. Now I kinda have an mp3 player as I have Nokia 5510 phone which has a player. Don't use it much though... The headphone & hands-free combination doesn't have that great sound and the user interface of the player is a bit dodgy.
  7. And the PS2 has GTAs, Gran Turismos, Resident Ivils, Final Fantasys, etc... Really depends what you like.
  8. Don't know if anyone is runnign linux on a smart phone but at least it is done on (non phone) PDAs. I am not awfully well aware of different OS on smart phones. I know something about Symbian, I've actually learned developing for it a bit and I'm most certainly going to learn more next spring. The way Symbian is designed and the fact that it is not owned by a one big company, is something that appeals to me. And then again I'm one of those little MS haters out there...
  9. Actually single quotes around variable on a string inside double quotes doesn't prevent the variable from being parsed. To clarify, this does work, it prints out 'foo' (with the quotes) <?php $stuff = "foo"; $var = " '$stuff' "; echo $var;?> But just to make sure every variable is parsed I always use . (dot) operator and \ before quotes which are meant to be as characters. So the beginning of the VALUES would look like this 'VALUES (\''.$sender_firstandlast.'\'',\''.$sender_companyname.'\',\''.$sender_email'\'' I don't know if it's the browser or PHP but for me this has always been done automatically. So straight from a post or get variable "Hercco's " would be in PHP like "Hercco\'s". But nevertheless using addslashes() does no harm and is probably wise thing to do. And it should be always done if you take the data from a file for example. EDIT: Also, in addition to removing that double post vcould you, Remonit, (or Mod) add few spaces to the SQL line. The thread is quite wiiiiiiide in Mozilla.
  10. Thanks Dan, you're the Man :PThose look like decent companies, and they accept paypal which is great. There's something bothering me about combination of very cheap online shopping and giving my credit card information.
  11. I have a uni.cc domain and it works great and everything... but the problem I have is that people can't remember it. I want my site to become popular and I have decided to get a dot com domain. Especially as you can get the really cheap nowadays.I know lot companies are offering domains for less than $10/year but can you really trust them? And is there a website where you can compare registration/annual fees? And possibly read reviews of companies?
  12. Does MySQL print out an error message? If so could you copy & paste it here. Oh and you accidentally double posted. Delete the other thread and save our mods time.
  13. Chilipie did it 100% correct. But as this is a serious issue and I've seen this done in the web, I'd like to warn you. If you look at the code of the switch structure you can easily come up with an easier way to do it. Why to use switch when you could simply just send the page name as a get and include file based on the name. Like this include($_GET['page'].".php"); This works, but what if some one requests... http://yourserver.com/rg-erdr.php?_rpo=t So ALWAYS use a switch structure OR if include a file depending on GET parameter use a list for allowed files and check on every include.
  14. You probably mean it is not as easy to copy
  15. To answer Sole's second question... To use SSH you of course need an access to a server providing SSH service. Then you need an SSH client. For linux you can use openSSH which is open source and free. For windows there is PuTTY, which is free also. http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ SSH Communications used to offer a free version of their client, but no more. If you can find an old version somewhere it is of course still free and legal to use it. SSH Comm. software incluides also a SCP (Secure Copy, like remote copy but with encrypted communication) client with a graphical user interface, which is really handy. I believe old versions of the software can befound on some website specializing to old sw versions or from a p2p network.
  16. First of all I'd like to mention that I haven't voted in this poll and I won't. I don't own either one of these and I haven't even played with them that much.Like you XBox is more powerful and can produce better graphics but this really quite inrelevant when talking about game consoles. What matters is actually in the name: the games. And more specially the exlusive games. So check what games are available for each and decide based on those. Also if you plan to play online that is probably wise to take into account aswell. I am under the impression that XBox is slightly ahead when it comes to playing online.
  17. From the top of my mind...-Good moderating tools. Splitting topics etc...-Limitless hieararchical categories. -Usergroups and possibility to limit certain forums and features (like search) from some users.-Polls are neat.-Flood control.-Easily customisizable templates-Search.-Backup-Security! -Announcements-Possibility to archive old topics.-BBCode
  18. I use both Firefox and Opera regularly. I also have Netscape 7 installed and use it every now and then. There are only few things that I would really want to be changed in Opera.1. I like to have my cookie settings so that the browser asks every time when a site wants to set a cookie. If it is a site I trust I select "always allow" and it won't ask me again. Same goes the other way around, so when I once opted not to allow google to set cookies, the browser won't bug me again.Allright both Opera and Firefox can do this, but the dialogue in Firefox is way better. Opera opens a big window where is a pulldown menu where you can select what to do cookies from the server in future. While FF opens a small and handy box with three buttons: Allow, Allow For Session and Deny. This may sound like *****ing for a minimal thing... but consider that this dialogue opens everytime I visit a new that sets cookies. And that is a lot of sites. Firefox's dialogua is so easy and fast that it barely slows down browsing. Opera's makes me want to give up my principle and start allowing all cookies.2. The searches at the top toolbar. Works like charm in both FF and Opera but it is way much easier to add new searches in Firefox. In FF I have allmusic guide, wikipedia, dictionary, etc, etc... searches and I would like to have them in Opera aswell but haven't bothered to find out how to do it.3. People have somehow gotten the idea that Opera is the browser that supports CSS the best. In reality is has a horrific bug with float. It usually doesn't show as people still do their sites with tables and those who use divs position their boxes absolutely. For an example of the float bug just check Wordpress' (a blog system) admin panel... Opera also has some problems viewing boxes over other elements correctly. This occurs when you do "display: block/display: hidden" with javascript.
  19. I like to group all non-metal, non classic r'n'r, non progressive and non hard rock as "alternative rock". Tool, Perfect Circle and Adema are certainly alternative rock. Anathema latest albums are alt. rock yes, but I personally prefer the old doom metal stuff.
  20. My opinion is that if you have never programmed anything it is better to start with object oriented language. I am not sure if it is easier to learn compared to procedural languages, but it is relatively easier to learn if you don't have the burden of thinking procedural pragramming. See I am one of those who learnt procedural programming first. My first language was pasca and I learnt C (and actual algorithm designing) when I got into university. I am not aiming for a career in programming but I like to be able to do write own programs and as webdesigning is kinda hobby of mine (and who knows even a profession in the future) programming is useful to know. And of course I am required to know programming being on fourth year on my information technology studies. As an idea I really like object oriented programming. Funny as it may sound, I don't really do it. I like the approach but it is kind of strange to me, because of the "burden" of procedural programming. Don't get me wrong, I can program object oriented. As a projectwork in uni I (with a friend) programmed a simple game in C++ (totally OO, not "C with C++", although in beginning we were tempted) and java is familiar to me, although I haven't programmed much with it (I'm planning on taking some courses). But when I get the idea to do a small utility, the ideas of the code that sprungs into my mind are in procedural language. It really takes effort to start thinking it object oriented. Object oriented programming was developed because it is thought to be more alike to human thining than procedural algorithms. This would support the claim that OO is actually easier to learn for average person than procedural is. But as you once get you mind to the track that is this "old fashioned" programming, it is really hard to shift lane and start thinking OO.
  21. If here happens to be anyone else who is into punk rock let's get some discussion started! Your favourite bands and albums? And do you have some local, not so well known, bands to share with us.
  22. Hats off to Dead Edwards! That is truly amazing work. I'm most likely going to start using that I don't see javascript being disabled a huge problem. Javascript is usually disabled for security reasons. Now if a person is concerned about security he is usually a bit more aware of the technology than the average web user and most likely is not going to use IE. My rough and in no way statistic relying guess is that less than a per cent of the Internet Explorers that are used in the web have constantly javascript disabled. Javascript haters are using something else. And besides, asking people to enable javascript to view your site correctly is lot less than to ask them to download, install and switch browser. You can also explain why you require javascript, if for nothing else than to make your users blame it on Microsoft.
  23. And which do you think is best? As a web designer, with which one you know that user is seeing a date? And R3d Javascript is really worth learning. It isn't the best technology to get a date or time to your website but you can do lot of stuff that are really useful for your visitors. A typical example is manipulating form data on client side. For example, it is extremely useful to be able to check/uncheck all checkboxes at once. My view is that Javascript shouldn't be used to replace server-side stuff but to do stuff that are useful (ie. not just flashy) but not possible or very clumsy with server-side program.
  24. And in case of late night add a coffee maker. AKA programmers best friend.

    Forum Skinning

I have a self made skin, or template as they are called in phpBB, on my forums. It bases on the basic subSilver and what I have changed are pretty much only colours and pictures. I also repositioned some menus. All that was easy as pie to do, and I managed to pull it so that all mods that I have tried to install so far haven't caused problems with the template. Anyways my tip is that first install the forums and all the mods you are going to need. Then download the basic template with FTP and start building your own over that.
