Well it depends on what you mean by text based game. If you mean some kind of adventure game where you are in a cetain location and you select an option for example: you are in the castle and a dragon walks by: a. follow the dragon into the dungeon b. leave the castle into the wilderness c. slay the dragon Something like that could be done with a lot of html pages yes (kind of like the books that are like that). If you wanted a player base that you needed a login etc... you would need php.

Well you already mentioned all of the pros and cons I was going to bring up. It's really up to you and up to the system you are hoping to run it on. As you mentioned pro tools is the industry standard and if you want to do this for your future career I would recommend that just so you have the experience with it. The only con I can think of that you left out for pro tools would be its support on mac. Most of the time when apple releases a new OS, pro tools doesn't run too well on it, and digidesign rushes to try and fix it. So if you always want to be up to the newest version of apple's operating systems I would recommend Logic, otherwise they are both great software. It is just up to you and which one you feel more comfortable with.

Although I do agree with you, I do think new programmers can benefit from an IDE that color-codes their code for them. I use one that color codes and completes my code but I turned off the auto function complete feature so it only color codes the page, and it is so much easier to read through the code.

You need to remember that you are working with regular expressions. The vertical bar: | is a symbol used in regular expressions so it doesn't know that it wants you to look for those. What you want to do is escape all of those out. So change your find variable to this: $Find = "/\|\|(.*)\|(.*)\|(.*)\|\|/i";

Actually I think you do. Even though I was not successful in signing up I did see the large image promoting people to sign up because of a free 25 bucks, and didn't say anything about being referred but there is no real reason for me to even waste hours of my time trying to get it to work. If I wanted to waist my time making money on the net I'd take a couple of chacha queries and make about that in the same amount of time.

This is crap. When I try to sign up it says "The Password must contain alphanumeric characters." So I tried putting in some numbers, still says same error, tried putting in symbols, same error. If they are too lazy to get their website to work with decent browsers I don't think I want to trust them with my money.

Of course they do, but standing at a less human more logical standpoint (sort of how summer glau would look at it in the Sarah Conner Chronicles on fox ^.^), the decedents who's lives are on the line don't exist yet. It would be one thing if they were to be born and then suddenly die of our doing, but who exactly are we hurting if they will never exist?

Alright I know its been ages since I've posted one of these... And I am dropping that stupid format I had before. From now on I'm just going to quote the intro and get right into the "question" although most of these haven't really been questions anyway so I might start calling these "theoretical thoughts"... or something similar... Anyway on with my crazy rantings... LIFE! So to introduce the crazy thoughts that I am bringing up today I want to first bring up what made me think of it. It was Kobra's stupid new sig image about going green... It got me to thinking. All this hype about going green. Well of course I know what it is for, to "save our planet" from these horrible things we are doing to it. But then think for a minute... The planet will soon be destroyed anyway no matter how "green" we go. Even if we limit down our amount of emissions to a tenth of a percent of what they are now, the planet will be destroyed eventually anyway and we will soon need to find another place to live, so instead of "saving" our planet we are just going to try to stall the inevitable destiny of it being uninhabitable until we find an alternative location for us to create a civilization? Now many argue no. They say we are trying to save our planet for our decedents, so they can live in a world as good as ours. But why? Why are we bonded so closely to our own kind? Why is any creature? What would be the big tragedy of us all going extinct anyway? I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of annoyed replies for that comment, but think for a moment. We're acting like people who commit suicide to "get back" at the people they don't like, but they don't realize that the'll be gone and it doesn't even matter. So what if a couple trillion people aren't born and have to face life and then die. How is that going to change that much? Nature is the force that decides what lives or dies and we have sure done a number on nature to try to stay alive. Perhaps we have come to a point where we need to back down and let nature take its course, even if that means our kind going extinct. Now that being said, I would like you all to know that these are marly thoughts floating through my brain that I felt like sharing with you... No I do not believe that we should destroy our planet and no I do not actually believe that it doesn't matter if we go extinct because I am a human like the rest of you. But if you haven't already read through the post with a logical stand point. I think some of you may find these thoughts rather interesting.

I love my job. It is just plain awesome. I love coming in the days I do and being greeted by everyone when I come in, and being good friends with all my coworkers, or so I thought. Today I had two different people come up to me and basically tell me that I was arrogant, rude, and conceded to some of our smarter and more experienced employees. Now I personally have no recollection of ever being rude to them but I am very depressed that I come off that way. I always thought that they considered me as a friend but now I feel as if they think I am just an annoying know-it-all, (which I really didn't think I was). They both basically said the same thing. That I was a great employee and that I did a great job but that some of our more experienced employees have actually taken the time to say something. Now I would have preferred it if instead they would have told me that I was doing an awful job and was being fired, but everybody thought I was awesome and were sad to see me go and would miss me.So why am I posting this here? Well I basically don't want to tell anyone at work, I'm sure nothing I can say can repair the first impression that I gave off, and I'm sure nobody here cares about my dilemma's at work but I just feel better just letting my thoughts come out. I cannot believe that I have ever acted in such a way, and I am starting to rethink my decision of working there. I would also like to apologize if I have ever been rude or arrogant to any of you here. If I have in any way I would love it if you told me and perhaps I should rethink my decision of posting here as well...

well if you did that then you would have to connect to sql in every single file, just taking up your time every time you want to add a new file.

Are you kidding? I'm not trying to be the mr. goodie non-rule breaker here, but isn't the number one issue with pot brain damage? I mean pot does more damage to your body than alcohol does. What are you talking about!? Perhaps you've never seen it ruin someone's life just because it *BLEEP*s up their brain so much that they don't even realize what their life is.

Actually it is freeware. You obviously have no idea what freeware means because you just gave us the definition of freeware. Just because it has the word "ware" in it doesn't automatically mean spyware...
-
Ok so if it all works what is the problem? Or are you saying it worked on a different webhost and not Xisto? I can't give you a "step by step" instruction on how to do it if you don't even explain properly what it is you want to be done.
-
Count me in. I've got a lot of other projects to be done as well, but I might be able to help out a bit if you actually plan on going through with this. I am a second year computer science major and all we've been doing is java. Once you've got the idea down and the UI planned out i'll wright the basic structure of the game engine for you.

I am really tired of this argument. They are both great and they are both terrible. There everyone happy? Reading this thread made me extremely angry. I don't think a Xisto post has made me this mad in my entire life. Arrogant users of their operating systems claim that theirs is the best just because they haven't even tried the others. And the fact that Linux wasn't mentioned in savgunz's post makes him even less qualified to make this thread. Recently I have been triple booting my MacBook Pro with Ubuntu, windows and Leopard. I think they are all Great. I wish people would stop doing this. They all have their downfall but that doesn't mean they suck. In fact if I had to choose a favorite it would be Ubuntu. Just because of the fact that linux is so customizable you can make the GUI look any way you want without being limited what some big corporation thinks your GUI should be. Thats what an OS is meant to be anyway. Functional and how you want it to feel. Mac and windows actually force their GUI onto you even if you don't like it. Now that being said, as far as hardware goes, I just prefer the Apple design (I mentioned I run a MacBook Pro). It's sleek and powerful, and even though its a bit more pricey than Dell or Gateway may be I think that is worth it. That being said I'm going to go back to the thread. I think csp4.0's post was the most irritating however. First of all gamers who think just because there isn't a version of counter-strike for mac, that suddenly macs can't play games. What the hell are you saying. Ok you have a game that only supports windows, alright thats great go use windows, but when you're ready to drop the little kiddie stuff and actually want a decent operating system I think you'll want to make the switch. Just because you can't find the right click button on a mac doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You really need to stop just repeating what you hear on the internet and actually try to use one before you talk about it.

I really don't see why any of these places still exist. You need to work very hard to keep up your referrals and than surfing the web for random pages? Just seems like a waste of time for very little pay. If you need money, get a job at your local grocery store. You will make 10 times as much money working minimum wage than you will with any of this crap.

I wouldn't suggest putting this file in the public_html folder. Put it up one directory in your root folder. This should keep your password hidden if the php parser were to ever break.

I know this is an old topic but nobody has given the easiest answer yet to this simple question. I believe GD library has some php functions for you to use to do this. Something like this should work: $url="/images/convert.gif"; //url of image you want to convert (you will have to make an image upload script if you want to get these from user's harddrives)$from="gif"; //convert from: gif | png | jpeg$to="png"; //convert to: gif | png | jpeg//------------------------------------------------------header("Content-Type: image/".$to);@{"image".$to}({"imagecreatefrom".$from}($url));

18 Features Windows Should Have (but Doesn't)
galexcd replied to Saint_Michael's topic in Operating Systems
I did agree with the first two groups of ideas, but the further down I got the more I disagreed with that. The first two groups had great useful ideas, but as I go down they start getting less useful and more just pretty graphics that waste computer resources. Especially things like coverflow and desktop cube are just pointless. Yes I think they look really cool, and I use them when booted into mac and linux, but Microsoft already had enough problems getting some of the minor GUI enhancements in vista. I would be scared to use a computer running an operating system made by Microsoft with all of these features. -
Ftp Uploads Using a third party FTP manager
galexcd replied to kudmus's topic in Web Hosting Support
I just thought I'd jump in here and add a quick suggestion about which ftp manager to use if you are using a mac. Konqueror is great for any platform, but if you don't feel like messing around with kde's cyberduck is by far the best FTP manager I've come across on the mac, and best of all it's free. But really it doesn't matter which client you use, just don't go out paying for one. There are so many freeware/open source ones that can do everything the commercial ones can do, it's not worth spending your money on. Also one quick note that rob left out. If you find that you are having trouble logging in with that info, or want multiple FTP accounts (perhaps you are not the only one working on the website) you can set up all of the accounts in your cpanel. -
Well first of all that site has quite a bit more than just some images placed in there. Theres some flash, and some pretty complex css. You said "its all premade", you mean they are giving you the source code for that website to you? And perhaps the code links to all of the images locally? If that is the case they should provide you with all of the image files and where to upload them (such as in /images/ etc...), that is if they are a decent code distributor. Perhaps if you explained more about how you came about this website and where exactly they linked to this page it might be more helpful. If you don't know, or they didn't give you any images, then you have your work cut out for you. You need to look through the source for any images, go to that url and download them from that site/upload them to your server.
-
It is pretty good, I just have a couple of quick suggestions to add. First of all why are you wasting memory on the server with all of those useless variables? Even though its temporarily while your page is loading. Normally for code this short it wouldn't matter, but since its a function that will be included in other pages, the object of it is to be fast and effective. The faster and more effective it is the better the function is.Also I assume the reason you have htmlentities after strip_tags is to parse '<' and '>' that are not in tag format? (for example an arrow: -->). If you are doing this why do you also strip_tags? Is it important to completely eliminate tags that are in html format? Why not just keep them in there and just parse them into > and <?Also, I would think that add_slashes would make it more secure than strip_slashes. This would escape out quotes, and would also escape out any backslashes that strip_slashes would remove, rendering them useless.

How Do A 3 Monitor Comp Work i have seen in a video somewhere
galexcd replied to jopak134's topic in Hardware Workshop
Thats not software, its actually part of the os, or at least the drivers for the graphics card. The computer just takes the second moniter and extends your screen space onto it. You just need to specify the dementions of the second one and where in proportion it is to your primary one. -
So wait, now I am confused. Is this a bug or a security measure to keep you from stealing windows? It seems like something Microsoft would do.... "You wanna disable the accounts that were pirated?" "nahhh lets just disable ctrl+c and bug em"
