  1. Days that change my life, hmm, that is a tricky one, because I don't think, there is a single day that changed my life, or drastically altered my life path. Having said that, I have been through a lot of change. Met people through random acts of friendlieness and lost friends through random acts of agressiveness. For me, live moves in calm ways, I take things as they come, but I take the opportunities. I ended up doing a masters degree in a different country (Schottland) just because a professor offered me the place, after I enroled into a course, I should not have been eligible to join, doing an exchange pogramme with from a University I did not attend. But, you see I can only see positive things about the lack of excitement. Not that I don;t enjoy adrenalin, but I think it is overrated. I rather sit back work and let things happen and trust, that they will turn out for the best.Having said all that, if I had taken another view, it would probably be that each one of my days is a miracle, that I am not dead (yet - although it will happen sooner or later), that I am being loved, that I can love, that I am healty, that I have a job, that I can walk, talk, write. It is these little things on a daily basis that make life special. So, no life changing experience at all, and a life full of life changing and affiming experiences. It is the perspective we take.
  2. Well it is certainly more obvious in the Vizion_x template, hmm
  3. Ah, thanks, I hadn't discovered that one, possibly, because it is not in an immediately obvious place, even though the way it is presented is certainly "standard". maybe it could have a similar grayed background as the top menu with the "Free Web hosting, Gallery.... links", instead of the simple blue stroke. having said that, maybe I should test your different layout options at the same time.... But I will use it now. It seem to be high enough to be reached by a top of page key-stroke, so that is covered as well.
  4. Hi, did a quick search but could not find any thread on this, a general suggestion thread on layout improvements. so I hope I am not trotting on anybody's food here. If, please excuse, and basch me to the end of the thread where I belong. So here goes. When I design websites, I always strife to make it as quick, and as sweet as possible, rather unlike the explanation and introduction to this post. So, my question? Why is there no home button at the top of the screen. When I want to go and check my credits, or just go back to the top of the pile and look at all the threads that are out there (and I do this about two or three times per visit) I have to scroll somewhere into the middle of the page, select a pulldown menu, click on it, press go and presto. rather than just making one press on the keyboard - top of page, and press f.e the logo, which would carry me straight back to the forum start. The other option is to go into my bookmarks, or click on my quicklink, but really a home button would be nice, somewhere up there. That is my only serious criticism, for the time being. But I am sure others have theirs. What is yours? And what can we do about it?
  5. four computers and two windows-pc'seMac with power G4 and superdrive, 512Mb RAM, 17' screen, 80gig and an external firewire drive with 150gigs main workhorse for graphic design and typesetting for my publishing companyiMac G3 for accounting and the wifepowermac with G3 50gig drive for whoever wantsiBook, when I am on the road.wireless network to keep it all together.oh, the two PC sit in the corner and growl, they haven't been touched in years, just collecting dust, will probably just tipp them on the skip, not worth anything and just plain ugly.... (my wife will celebrate)
  6. I am Mac man, but professionally I work with both, MAC's for my home business and Windows-PC's for the office job in town. and there are good reasons. For starters. Mac's are cheaper than Windows-PC. It is an often heard claim, that Windows PC's are cheaper then Mac, when in fact you get the same power for a much smaller financial investment. Try the Mac mini next time.Secondly bigger programme base. O.K if you are a gamer, I don;t know, because I rarely ply games (have a Playstation for that). But again, all business applications exist, some of them native, for Apple as well as Windows-PC, and if there really is no application. but you really need it, how about Virtual-PC. You see the Mac is able to emulate a Windows-PC, Is there a Windows-PC out there that can do a Mac, I don;t know, but it sounds like an oxymoron. So, Mac cheaper, Mac more programmes (because you can play all those games on the Virtual-PC base as well), Mac looks better, Mac don;t lose their value as quick as a Windows-Pc, you get more, when you try to buy a new modell. Macs last longer. I still use a 15 year old machine, as well as my now also slightly greyish eMac, because they still go strong. While my private Windows-PC's all lay in a scrap heap at the other end of the house. No point in upgrading those.so, choice? easy. Mac everytime.
  7. We have two cameras. A powershot A40 with 2 megapixels and both digital and optical zooms. It produces quite good images. We also have a cheaper Vivitar with 4 mega pixels without zoom, but as previously had been stated, it is the image size that is being produced that is important. So, when you want to buy a camera look at a couple of things. Especially, what do you want to use the camera for. just some holiday snaps. 99% will stay on your computer for ever? take the cheapest camera you can find. You only need quality if you want to print them on photographic paper and want to blow them up to a much bigger size. But then then the options become like a bottom less pit and you can spend so much money it is not funny.Stabilisers, balancing your shaky hands? Propper mirror reflex, that take the picture when you press the release and not 2 seconds later, when the camera decides it is ready.but on a more practicle note, if you don;t want to use internet base services to print propper photographic prints, make sure, you can easily transfere images back to the camera, without the need of a extra piece of equipment, a card reader. lots to consider...
  8. My worst swearword is : hold your breath.......Pflaumenkuchen. It translates as Plum cake. So, you might wonder how one can swear with Plum cake, Plum cake is beautiful thing, it smells lovely when it comes out of the oven freshly baked, sprinkling some sugar on top, some cream. hmmmm it is delicious, so why do I use it for swearing. My little theorie on swear is (leaving aside the aspect of it being cool, which I think is negligible, and growing up helps) you swear, because something goes wrong and you want to voice your contempt and make a shout of disgust. And what better sound to produce, than those that are explosive? Ssssssh....., FFFFFFFFFFFFF...., You can penn up all your agression and frustration about what went wrong and you shout it out. so that's why Pflaumekuchen works, when it is said in German but not, when you use the English translation. In Pflaumenkuchen you have the "PF" so good to release the tension and get all this penned up air out, and the you have the "kuch", which is difficult to say and demands extra agression. Once the word is out, and you hear it, Pflaumenkuchen, all the nice associations that you connect with the word come along, you start drooling, and become hungry for a piece of the slice, and you forget that you just hit your finger with the hammer.I know, it isn't cool, but I knew I am not anyway.
  9. Thanks liauce, this is really interesting, I love singing in choirs and did so infact this morning for our harvest service. But the bacis technique are the same if you want to sing on your own or in a choir. So I am really looking forward to readon more about the technical and physiological side of singing. I think that is the area where I lack most. I know, and practice good warming up techniques, including efforts to relax the whole body, before starting to sing, but I only do this because one of the conductors used to do that with us. So I do it, know it is good from practice, but don't always know, why (physiologically). She also had some fantastic tricks for our Soprano's, when trying to reach the higher notes, she said a sign should flash up in the nape of your neck saying "It's fun to sing."So, please continue this series, I am looking forward to learning a lot. Thanks
  10. I had my fair share of break ups and one girl friend even left me for a horse, don't laugh, she is now happily married and has four children, by a great guy, I sometimes see her, but luckily she lives in my hometown and thats miles away and I only vist maybe once a year. Of course I was heartbroken, when she left me, my first girl friend, and I was 19. but still, I got over it, a year later. but then I went to University and the girl I fell in love with there, was not really interested. I think it is much harder to be permanently rejected, or being kept on, maybe, mhh, yeah, maybe, all the while she is seeing someone else and she pretends to not being able to make up her mind. but I forgive her and when I have seen her since, my heart still pounds, but she is a great person, has a great personality and I honestly still like her. I had one girlfriend, who after she dumped me, put me in such misery, I lost a third of my body weight. And the next girl I am still in contact with and she even came to my wedding.Of course it is possible to stay friends with your Exes, it does not work with all, (she is the only one) but it is rewarding. Afterall there was a reason, why we got along well, there was a reason, why we understood each other. So once we realised, we could only bear each other in small doses, we meet for a coffee occasionally and chat on the phone or email. She knows what goes on in my life, I never knew, what went on in her live anyway....As you can see, I had my fair share of breakups, some more tragic, some took years of suffering, others were over quick. mostly, when I dumped, it was over quick, when I was being dumped, it could take a while. Anyway, there is nothing that can prepare you for a breakup, why should there be. You are in a relationship and you tend not to want to break up in such a situation.
  11. a warning however, before buying shoes for someeone else. Have you previously been shopping shoes with her? I am asking, because I would not buy shoes for my wife and she is unable to buy shoes for me. My feet are very wide and I have a massive span, that means I have to test wear all shoes I am buying, I could not just buy any shoes like that. Same for my wife. I know the size off her feet, but the shape means, she has to test them before she buys them. Shoes are very important, you have to feel and be comfortable in them otherwise you get headaches or worse. This does not mean you cannot buy them, but just as a word of caution. Also, not every shoe manufactury, produces the same size, sometimes I am a 8 sometimes a 9, sometimes a 8 1/2, it all depends. So, a word of warning, but i have to agree shoes are a very desirable present. However footmassages can be very nice as well, so if they are aching...

Oh, and while we are at it. I had a conversation with a friend who lived in Japan since 1984 and he told me the following story. Just thought that might be of interest. Notice from serverph: quote tags fixed. credits adjusted.

    George Bush

i Dont know anybody who hates bush, but there is certainly a lot of rightfull disgust at his policies. He might be a personable person and good to be around, but it is also known that he has a bad temper.People don;t like him, because he is not good for the country. He started a war, and this war has now killed over 1900 american soldiers.he prevents the propper assesment of his failures, because he cannot stand critisism of himself. No I can understand, why people don't like to be critizised, but honestly. Critique is the most important democratic duty. It is the first patriotic act, to stand up and critizise. Now Bush has created a climate where moderate critizism is completly ignored. If you are dissenting you are not even allowed into events where he speaks, even if you only want to listen to what Bush, or Cheney or whoever has to say.So what do you do if you cannot say: Hang on a moment, i don't quite think, what you are saying makes sense; like giving extremist control of education directions and anti-science legislation. and nobody listens to you or rush limbaugh shouts SHUT UP. so what do you do, because, what you are saying is right. It is the truth and 90% of people agree with you. The earth was not created in 7 days. but still they want to teach it in SCIENCE class in KansasSo, you raise your finger again. and the police comes and puts you into prison for a night, because you were one step outside the free speech zone. and you think, if Bush does not want to discuss, if he only speaks infront of a bought crowed, if he makes soldiers wait a full day before they can see their loved ones, they have not seen for a year, so that the light of the sun illuminates his hair propperly, then raising a finger and saying, ehem, I would like to make a point, maybe not enough. When you are reprimaned in school, when you are wearing a t-shirt saying the president is a liar, when he is a liar. then yes, I can understand why people severly dislike him.And notice, I have not even started on his policies here.however, if you have asked this question honestly, I think it is a good start. Well done. for realising, not everybody agrees with Rush Limbaugh and FOX and actually, those that disagree make more sense, are more compassionate, care for the other person not just themselves. Think before they shout. and put yourself into their shoes for a second. did you know that under bush the richer are now Richer and he made it more difficult to become rich. The American dream is only for those that already have. it is easier to become rich in Europe than in American, if you are poor. Look at the pictures in New Orleans did you notice all the people with no teeth, why is there no universal healthcare?Bush (and the republicans) only think about themselves and their party. They are hating other people, hating people that point out their corruption (where is that $1.billion gone in Irak), hating people that point out their hypocrasies, hating people pointing out their double standarts. You know, dissent IS patriotic.
  15. I cannot understand why Owen made the move to Newcastle, alright there is the price tag, but still. Having said that, especially after last weeks performance, my neigbour talks to me again and he looks definitely happier. Yes, I live in Newcastle and the mood of the ton definitely has increased. So finishing among the top 6?I don't know, but lets hope so.
  16. shigajet has already mentioned the finances, I think that is a realy big stumbling block. I think, you don;t need to go to an international school. If your local school provides good education in all subject and the only difference is that they teach in Thai rather than English, have them go to the local school. It is more important that the importance of learning is being transmitted rather than a particular subject in a particular style.Learning depends on you using the opportunities you are being given and making the most out of the circumstances. If sending your children to these schools is so expensive, that you cannot spend time with them, because you have to earn so much and work longer hours. Dont send them to that school. Read an English book with them in the evening, listen to the radio WITH them, rather than being lounged in front of the television.English is not my first language, and you can see it in the way I write and put my sentence together. I only started to learned English at school when I was 14. I didn't speak a single word before that. With 27 I moved to Britain and made my master from a British University a year later. So I am all in favour of the local school, because I wouldn't want to miss out on the fun with my friends, rather than forming friendships with sons and daughtes of diplomats that might only be in the country for a year, just when the friendship develops.Good luck
  17. Hi only an answer to the second part, of course you can use other formats like .mov or another quicktime format, but most people, even with apple or linux, can infact play your video clip, once they have downloaded it. The other thing you can always do is, offer a link to where users can download the player to see your video clip for their specific system. That always helps me. The standards are Realplayer, Windows Media Player and Quicktime. P.S. If your file is big, I personally always prefer to download it, rather than watch the stream, it gives me more flexibility and I can watch it at a leisurely pace, rather than having to rely on my sometimes dodgy download connection. On the other hand, if you allow users to download your work, you give it away for free. You might be o.k with it, but just to point that out.
  18. We would drink a cup of tea together and have a good chuckle, questions would not have to be asked, as things would become obvious once her presence is reached. We would watch the empty hell and warm ourselves, together with all the sinners and saints and heathens and lions. Her justice would reign and make everybody understand the foolishness and pettiness of their hate and distrust of each other. Then we would sing hymns together, worshiping, celebrating. Worries are taken, peace will reign, meak will eat and be satisfied. We will forgive each other. nobody will be rich, but everybody will have more than they ever dreamed of.We will trust each other, hate will be a word that will loose all meaning. differences no reason for conflict. But the good thing about this, heaven can be started here on earth, that is why we have the revelations and our rich traditions. We will not complete it here, why rob all the fun, of what will expect us. But practicing all the things here on earth that will wait for us near God will make them so much more familiar and by doing so, we can touch and all have a sip of the cup of tea in the now.
  19. icemarle, I should have read all your replies, sorry for my last blurb, cant help myself...
  20. 666 is the number of "The beast". In the last book of the bible - revelation is a reference: <quote>Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.</quote> A (the main source for the new testament) and Vulgate (the latin translation of whole bible) write the numbers in full in the Greek. But B (another main source for the new testament) writes merely the three Greek letters standing for numbers, Ch, X, St. " C (another main source for the new testament) reads "616", but IRENAEUS (one of the Church fathers), in 328, opposes this and maintains "666." IRENAEUS, explained this number as contained in the Greek letters of Lateinos (L being thirty; A, one; T, three hundred; E, five; I, ten; N, fifty; O, seventy; S, two hundred). The Latin is the language of the Church of Rome in all her official acts; the forced unity of language in ritual being the counterfeit of the true unity; the premature and spurious anticipation of the real unity, only to be realized at Christ's coming, when all the earth shall speak "one language" ( Zep 3:9 ). The last Antichrist may have a close connection with Rome, and so the name Lateinos (666) may apply to him. The Hebrew letters of Balaam amount to 666; a type of the false prophet, whose characteristic, like Balaam's, will be high spiritual knowledge perverted to Satanic ends. The number six is the world number; in 666 it occurs in units, tens, and hundreds. It is next neighbor to the sacred seven, but is severed from it by an impassable gulf. It is the number of the world given over to judgment; hence there is a pause between the sixth and seventh seals, and the sixth and seventh trumpets. (both references to other part of revelation) The judgments on the world are complete in six; by the fulfilment of seven, the kingdoms of the world become Christ's. As twelve is the number of the Church, so six, its half, symbolizes the world kingdom broken. The raising of the six to tens and hundreds (higher powers) indicates that the beast, notwithstanding his progression to higher powers, can only rise to greater ripeness for judgment. Thus 666, the judged world power, contrasts with the 144,000 sealed and transfigured ones (the Church number, twelve, squared and multiplied by one thousand, the number symbolizing the world pervaded by God; ten, the world number, raised to the power of three the number of God). The "mark" (Greek, "charagma") and "name" are one and the same. The first two radical letters of Christ (Greek, "Christos"), Ch and R, are the same as the first two of charagma, and were the imperial monogram of Christian Rome. Antichrist, personating Christ, adopts a symbol like, but not agreeing with, Christ's monogram, Ch, X, St; whereas the radicals in "Christ" are Ch, R, St. Papal Rome has similarly substituted the standard of the Keys for the standard of the Cross; so on the papal coinage (the image of power, Mat 22:20 ). The two first letters of "Christ," Ch, R, represent seven hundred, the perfect number. The Ch, X, St represent an imperfect number, a triple falling away (apostasy) from septenary perfection. hope this helped. In other words it is seen as a symol for the devil. however, I am still puzzled as to what you saw. Was it the 666? and before you ask, yes I knew all this, but yes I also had help. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Notice from snlildude87: This is a no post count forum meaning that you did not get credit for that. Next time, remember to quote whatever is not your words.
  21. 42 you don;t know 42 and the answer to the question to life universe and everything?</fake outrage>read up on Douglas Adams, and his science fiction novel, the hitchhikers guide to the Universe. It is hilarious. or go and watch the movie. (my brother in law is in it - in the demolition scene...) well worth!
  22. I don;t know how I ended up here, I browsed and browsed and browsed and there you were. hmm, what does that say about my effective research style?
  23. Well the encryption is the protection, they set up so no one unauthorised can use your companies bandwidth and become part of your network. They might give you the access code, if you ask them nicely, but if it is not for business reasons, I would not bet on it. as the previous poster said, breaking in is near impossible. As to their control over your browsing. Even though, you would use your private computer, it would still become a part of your companies network, be behind their firewall and therefore, they can limit what you can do (If they were friendly they would also be able to let everythign through to you, but if I were Sys Admin, I would not. To dangerous. viruses, etc pp Any security conscious SysAdmin would want to be able to control all computers on its network. Your computer could be a potential security risk) So sorry, I don;t think they will let you. try http://www.ninthdecimal.com/ http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/ http://www.myhotspots.co.uk/ If you live in Philadelphia you will be lucky. I heard they are going to introduce city wide wifi networks for free! but then it really depends, on the last job my wife had, she simply unplugged the network cable from her work computer and plugged into her computer and we video chatted. but they had no security there at all. I wold not bet on that being possible.
  24. I use all sorts of browser. Safari, icab, but my favourite is Omniweb - yes, you have to pay for it, but no other browser is so flexible with tabs. tabs in the background, tabs out front, altering sources code. It is in need of updating. and you can restore your workspace, have different workspace options f.e on my pc I only use mozilla firefox. If you have never used it, you don;t know what you are missing. I know, IE6 has tabbrowsing now as well, but the support and speed you get with the firefox is just great. so on the PC only firefox. I regularly tab between 10 or fifteen open windows. how am I supposed to do that with IE?? (and the best here again is Omniweb, it offers a thumbnail of the fronpage.I like the mouse movements with Opera as well and you can use it for free, if you are not bothered about the adds.Don;t get me started on security. pop up windows and the rest.I would not touch IE with a barge pole.Get a live, get a better browser! DUMP IE go into hiding, duck behind wall (-:
  25. well I have two telephone lines and a broadband, I could conceivably have three different accounts with different supplieres and if I still had isdn (not poss with my Broadband setting, but i could have cable) I could be connected to three different providers, providing me with three different dynamic IP's. I am typing this on my PC, while my music plays on my eMac, my wifes computer is in the living room. So no problem with that setting. The questions would be why? It is a little bit of an effort? she coud also be connected via her mobilephone, opening up a different possibilitiy there.I would say: ask, make it funny, like: have you all noticed, there is something funny with the IP going on here - really peculiar. You all seem to have the same IP, or I don't know.don't point your finger at the person you suspect, make it general. If he is malicious, he sees you are on his tracks, and might stop (or improve in disguising his tracks)Anyway just some random thoughts.
