  1. I couldn't believe the 'timeline' tool in picasa when I first saw it. It's like you're flying through a history of all your pictures. I remember where I was when I first saw it...
  2. I like the rvalkass and rejected ideas. extending the trap theme:low end of things: noticed the trap, poked the trap with a stick, sprung the trapmid-range: (I like caught in the trap), content in the trap, loving the trapupper-range: setting the trap, trap artist, zen trapper, rangerpeace!
  3. I was talking about OpaQue's script.
  4. cool script! What does this line in an example output mean? :Server Load Averages 4.37, 3.06, 2.68
  5. This is by far one of the strangest threads I've ever seen at Xisto. Can anyone provide an example for me where it would be confusing to say "mice" instead of "mouses"? I mean, as an object, what relevant adjectives and verbs would ever be similar? My mice are broken -- unless you're wondering if this is a joke I can't see how you would confuse a malfunctioning .pointing device. with, I guess, a sick pet.My mice escaped -- um, yeah. My mice are furry -- okay, now that's a good idea ^_^Long live the trap!
  6. Houston was leading at some point in most of the games. Each game was extremely competitive. The 'stros will still be dangerous next year. It is pretty silly to call it the world series, better to call it the MLCS, or something like that.
  7. Congrats to the white sox fans out there, you got to give Chicago a lot of credit because they have a great team. They had all the timely hits whereas Houston hitters went something on an 0-30 drought with runners on base. With that said, go 'stros in '06!
  8. The last time I checked you could only connect to G-talk with trillian if you upgraded to the pro version. The basic version will not include it. But, the pro version should come with the jabber plug-in installed. I don't know why, but when I was using trillian I had a really hard time getting it to connect to IRC channels through proxy servers. As soon as I switched to gaim, I was able to connect with ease. I couldn't figure out why this was, but maybe my experience is in the minority. gaim is also free and includes the same cross-network capability that trillian has. It doesn't have quite the same level of gui loveliness, and it also doesn't come with multi-user capability, but as long as you're on a multi-user OS then you don't have to worry about that.
  9. It looks like the florida keys are taking the storm now, I hope everybody is ok! There have been so many hurricanes and tropical storms this year that they ran out of names and had to move to the greek alphabet. Tropical storm alpha actually looks like it's getting sucked into hurricane wilma: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/?
  10. Hello, I noticed today that escape characters are showing up in the "last post info" box of a forum in the main page: It seems to display correctly in all the other places though. The list of posts at the bottom of the page displays it correctly: Similarly, the title looks fine in the "topic title" box in the subforum: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/194-dating-advice/ Thank you for your attention, it's not a big deal but I thought I would be neighborly and point it out. Thanx
  11. Great topic, girls, those are definitely good questions to avoid if possible. Ooh, this gets under my skin. I just got out of a relationship with a real high-maintenance girl, so this is a pretty sore topic for me--you are warned! In general I find that mistrustful people are often dishonest themselves, that's why they don't trust other people--because they know what they themselves are capable of. This goes for guys and girls. Are there any Xisto girls who have been in a relationship with a guy who asks a lot of these types of questions? These trust issues are really hard to deal with, and everybody just wants to be safe and feel loved, so I'm not pointing fingers, okay girls?
  12. my hair's getting long, I'll go with hot...girls with short hair...
  13. I've used XNview before with good success. Their website seems to be having responsiveness issues right now, but hopfully it will come back for you. Notice from BuffaloHELP: Edited as reported.
  14. Here's my take on this, do with it what you will. It's interesting to think about power side-by-side with the principles that one follows when wielding it. So, here are some quick thoughts about power and wisdom1. Power:A. The ability to bring to life one's ideas and desiresB. The ability to influence/control the perceptions of others2. Wisdom:A. Conforming one's perceptions to the nature of realityB. Bringing to life/sustaining that which is in harmony with realityLots of #1 without much #2 is scary. Lots of #2 without much #1 is sad. Interesting question, thanks!
  15. congrats, BuffaloHELP and wassie!!! Whenever I pushed the "report" button I knew it was headed into capable hands. Best wishes for success at your new posts.
  16. oooh, ouch, good luck wassie. A friend of mine had an ingrown toenail removed like you , and he recovered pretty fast. That is, after he had the surgery. He first tried to fix it himself, and it was a nasty bloody mess <wince>
  17. I understand what you mean. There's so much cool stuff to learn, and so little time... But, I'm 29 with lots of experience with this stuff. I didn't learn anything until at least high school, and most of it I learned in college and in my current work, so there's hope for you yet.
  18. wild20, you presume much. I meant to say at the end of my post that all I'm trying to do is explain some biology. I prefer not to discuss my belief system in this thread. But, fyi, did you know that Francis Collins, the man in charge of the public effort to sequence the human genome, is a Christian? It would appear that there are some examples of people who keep their faith with them in their pursuit of science. ciroxyz, I really like this site for its clear explanations of classical and molecular genetics. It's got some great audio and video!: http://www.dnaftb.org/ It helps explain the concepts of a gene, and a protein, and DNA and all that jazz. Good luck!
  19. Well, normally I don't like to resurrect threads, but this one really caught my attention. I get into similar arguments with people from time to time, and my experience in biochemistry informs my opinions. There are many many genes controlling eye development. I haven't studied them, so I can't give an estimate, but to give you an idea, there are at least 11 classically defined crystallin genes. They are structural proteins, not involved in development. However, these genes code for proteins that are expressed in the lens. The cells that express crystallins eventually lose their nuclei which helps the lens become transparent. I'm not certain, but I believe that the majority of the protein that remains in these lens cells are crystallins. Humans to insects is a huge distance in predicted evolutionary divergence, and I couldn't find evidence for crystallins in insects with a quick search. However, I did find crystallin genes in mammals, sharks, fish, amphibians, and birds. I even found crystallins in a blind cave fish! Now what is a blind fish doing with an eye? If your friend could believe that a blind cave fish and a regular fish evolved from a common ancestor, what about sharing a common ancestor with a shark...or lizard...or chicken, or human? At some point the destinctions that they have to make to support their arguments seem very arbitrary to me, and the biological evidence for evolution is very strong. If you look at genes more critical for life like, say, a ribosome which makes all proteins in a cell, or tRNAs which are the link between DNA/RNA and proteins, the genes are similar throughout the entire kingdom of life. Thus endeth the lesson!
  20. Hey zootycoongold, I always thought you were zooty_coon_gold, which was one of my favorite Xisto handles. I thought maybe you were referring to some sort of swamp treasure or something. "You'll never get my zooty coon gold 'ya varmint!"
  21. Hmm, how can I word this post to give some answers but encourage all of you to go out and find out some answers for yourself! Well, how about this, I used trillian for a long time before google talk came along and I needed to connect to jabber. Of course, trillian doesn't allow jabber in the free version so I started looking around and gaim was my first find: click here for gaim I quickly forgot about trillian. The only thing that I miss is the option for multiple users, but with multiple user accounts on a winXP computer it shouldn't be too much of an issue. The other bonus is that, for some reason, proxied IRC connections actually work for me in gaim but I could never get them to work in trillian. Of course now I'm moving to mIRC for IRC, but that's a different story. As for the smilies issue, well, I think I will let you discover that answer for yourself.
  22. Rise thread, service interruption breathes life into you....With respect to gyad it seems unlikely to me that this is some sort of targeted attack from an outside group. Anybody from Xisto who gets fed up and moves to payed hosting will probably go to Xisto - Web Hosting. We'll see though, hopefully the pattern of abusive activity will be clear.long live Xisto!
  23. I once did a report on Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. He built some houses without any 90 degree angles: http://www.wrightontheweb.net/his-works/thirties/hanna/
  24. How is it now? Which server are you on (it says in your cpanel, I'm on rhino)? The db server for my site was down for a little while today, but it's back up now.
  25. I live in Houston, and there was an extreme gas shortage here over the weekend as people were hording or filling up to get out of the city. I stayed in the city because I wasn't worried about flooding and lived in a sturdy building. I did have some adventures trying to find gas and then waiting in line for it once I found it.First of all, you don't want to go looking for gas because you don't want to waste gas trying to find it if it's not available. There is an initial hump you have to get over before deciding to go searching. This hump gets larger the less you have in your tank, but the anxiety level driving the search gets more intense too, so you start to go a little crazy. Then, the amount of time you're willing to spend driving around searching for a gas station that is selling gas must be considered, and the dynamics are similar to leaving in the first place.Once you find a place with lots of cars in line you have to circle a few times to make sure that the cars are moving. This is where it is helpful to have a spotter in the passenger seat who can run up to the front of the line and see if people are pumping or just waiting around. Sometimes people will line up and wait simply because there is a rumor that gas is coming soon.I heard some stories that people attempted to use tanks at stations even though they claimed to be out of gas, and that this sometimes worked, so you don't know if you should just pick a few empty stations and try it.Once you actually find a station with gas, and assuming you're at a crowded one, if no one is directing traffic in the station then you get people cutting in line. Most everyone is civil and orderly, but you get a few wackos who don't care what anybody else thinks and they cut in line and ruin the process for the rest of us sane people. Then you get people who yell at you to go to a certain pump if no one is directing traffic. Again, most folks were civil, but some people lose their cool.It is so nerve-wracking sitting in a line waiting for gas because you don't know if they're going to run out by the time you get to the pumps, and if they do run out then you wasted all that gas in the meantime. Also, if you're running the air conditioning (which you really want to because it's 100 degrees outside) then this problem is compounded. Finally, once you get a full tank of gas, everybody you know who doesn't have gas wants you to siphon yours into their tank for them. Even if they don't need it, they just want the security of a fuller tank. Typically these people have not waited in line for gas and don't know how much you've been through to get it and therefore are much too casual about asking you for it.In the US we have all of our material needs provided for so readily that we rarely if ever encounter scarcity, so, in case you're wondering, this is a really good example of what it's like! Still, it's really hard to imagine what it's like in Iraq where people wait for days for gas. I'd also be interested to see a thread on "What is...sitting in traffic for 24+ hours."
