arkad 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 That's a though one .. what is your defination of best??1) Price?2) Stability?3) Ease of use?4) Level of Tech Support?5) Security? For item 1, 2 & 5 there is no doubt that Linux will be the BestBUT ::Linux is by no means the most intuitive OS. If you've been a Windows user for a while, you may need quite a bit of getting used to.For items 3 & 4 Windows is answer. I think Win Server 2003 is their latest offering .. BUT :: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ .. Win cost a bomb!! Also, the other add ons are just as $$$$$$$$$$$$$ ... also most hackers / viruses etc are targeted at MS OSes .. jcguy 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 By the way, what OS do Xisto's servers use? I thought it is Apache servers, but I can't really be sure. It would be nice to know.
Trekkie101 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 Apache is just a HTTPd its responsible for taking requests and then sending the data, its like the bar is the OS and the bar tender is the Apache, he serves the data fromt he bar, Xisto to my knowledge are running Linux. qwijibow 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 Server Operating Systems.....FreeBSD is a great all round free and open ServerOS.OpenBSD is a super paranoid securety free and open Server OSLinux is the Cool guys Server OS (free and open)Solaris is most used Commercial Server OS... (and was recently made free under certian conditions, not sure, see the homepage)If you are comfortable with Unix, i would go for FreeBSD (or if you need an insane amount of securetyy, OpenBSD)if you are new to the Unix world, i would go for Linux, not because its any easyer, but its usually much easyer to find help on forums for Linu than it is for BSD UNIX or Solaris. And ofcourse, these always windows Server.the only one that isnt free, and has a very bad reputation as far as securety is concerned. iGuest 3 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 There is no best.Windows server has features that Linux doesn't and vice-versa. However, personally I prefer Linux, due to the features it has that support my way of style.
xJedix 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2005 Hi, Once again it depends on ur requirements, but any how am gonna reffer u the Linux (redHat linux 8.0) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I would have to agree. I see a lot of web host companys using redhat which I think is one of the better os's for webhost but I don't think its free. But it depends on what exactly your looking for. If this host is going to be more of a private host, you really don't need to much security since there won't be much traffic/random people visiting.
Artluo100 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2005 I really like the new Mac OS servers, way easier to set up than Windows 2003 Server. You should check on that but Powermac G5's aren't that cheap nowadays.
Cookiemonster1405241499 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2005 lol thermoid everything is crackable. Linux probably the best server run operating system, but my question is, is linux a good home computer for use like around the internet and gaming , im not really sure about these sort of things lol but hope to find out soon
xnrevolution 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2005 Well.. I like Linux cuz it's less buggy and is less of a virus target. Window's costs alot of mula and wouldn't you need a Mac to run OSX Tiger? lol.. either case Linux or a flavour of BSD would be the best way to go.. cheaper... more stable.. = unfortunatley harder to use in SOME cases After using Linux as long as I have I would give the harder to use category to Windows.. I can find an answer to almost ANY Linux question I have in a forum or by googling it.. windows however I have had much problems with :S.. like getting my NetMD to work as a power user... I've tried giving my user the permissions to install device drivers under Windows. but It won't WORK!!! lol but under linux it would much simpler to get that to work.. almost the same way but it would actually work. That is... if my NetMD worked under linux... yet another shinging example of the crippled proprietary world (Proprietary audio format ATRAC3 (netmd) + crappy proprietary software (openmg :S) + proprietary garbage OS (windoze) = one unhappy customer! )... oh well, as soon as I find my Rio Forge I'll be happy again! Good luck
iGuest 3 Report post Posted July 25, 2008 Linux for the WORLD Server Os Linux is just better IMHO, than Win. Gaming is one of the areas that it does lack a bit, but you can use WINE to run most games. If you are a noob in regards to your Linux Distro and you have no desire to learn the distro, then you may want to use Win. If you can spend a bit of time getting a game to install and run, read forums like this, and are patient with installation of Win software on your Linux box, then your overall gaming experience will prolly be better. For servers, I have to say CENTOS is the "best" for webservers. I use Ubuntu server for my servers at my house, but just because they are really easy to set up, and 'buntu is what I use on my desktop and pc for workstation use. If you are comfortable enough to crack Win, then just move to 'Nix of some flavor. I killed my last dangling Win install over two years ago (I can VM Win if I need to run tests) and I have never looked back. The only thing I would miss is Excel, because of the million+ rows support for MSOE 07. Note the year, because I have that installed on a Win computer in my office, so I use it if I ever need it (which is almost never). For most stuff that size I can use RECORDEDIT and edit DBs, or open office will get the job done. Linux is faster, more secure, and more logically set up. A decent computer user will favor Linux over Win, after a few days - weeks. It just makes more sense. -reply by wednesday allfather
laniczech 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2008 I like windows, but if your not going to build your own scripts, and rely on other peoples work, then id suggest a linux distro, because there are more scripts availablein php than in asp net, from what ive seen
