More Help Needed On Drupal Another build up of questions that I have on Drupal

Recommended Posts

Hi people, I think I need your help again. I will show you the latest version of my Drupal blog... (Yes!!! I'm pretty proud of myself, because I actually did all that!!! Like, going into the code and changing the theme settings of course, not coding the whole entire theme...)

This is the latest screenshot. As you can see, I have also added some arrows and things where I want to change some settings...

Posted Image

Also, one of my main questions (as shown in the screenshot with red arrows pointing towards it) is the categories. For some reason I can't seen to add tags or make categories for my posts and if I want this blog to work then I will absolutely need the categories to work. Really.

I need to be able to add tags and categories and child categories (they, tags and categories, are two completely different things), so the categories will go into the yellow menu bar, the child categories under in the black sub menu bar, and the tags just right under my posts.

And someone, just anyone, please reply to this post!!! I don't know if it is just me or not, but it seems like everyone has been ignoring my queries posts a lot. If I am seriously annoying you guys, just tell me and I will keep my questions to a minimum until I have a big build up, just like what I am doing now. :P

I don't know if I should post many little posts on my problems as I encounter them or just post a big post like this with all my questions on them. Any help will be highly appreciated. :P Thanks.

Here's my reply. Hey! Just wanted to say hello, hope my reply was sufficient to answer your question. Just kidding, I don't even know what Drupal is so I don't think I'll be much help. The login looks like a pre-set thing to me, it might not be very customizable unless you do it by hand. Or maybe there are themes for drupal? This is a long shot, but maybe you could search for the html or php (whatever it is) file that contains the words "Create new account" and right above that, would be the html for your password box. You could edit that a bit, or at least find it and then ask for the next step on how to widen it and move the image. As for the right hand column, well, I think that'd be a little bit harder to edit, but you could try searching for words like "RECENT COMMENTS" and maybe there'd be some table html attributes that you could change.. of course I'd make a copy/backup of the file you're editing in case something goes wrong. Or maybe there are much easier ways to edit that stuff, I really don't know. As for the module things, well I know even less of that lol.

Haha, hilarious, rob86... just joking... :P

By the way (this is off topic): How's the psiball? Any luck on feeling psi?

Anyway... Back of topic now...

Any reply is good, though I was actually hoping one from the Xisto Drupal experts (aka rvalkass). :P

Drupal is a platform like wordpress where you make your site, and while Wordpress is for blogging, Drupal is for well, basically anything!!! Many organizations and companies like the BBC use Drupal, and this is the reason why I'm using Drupal now, though how they manage to make things look so good and not default like is really out of my abilities.

But anyway... yeah, the log in is just a module that you install onto the platform, but I can't seem to find the login module script at all, and therefore not able to change the script (and wreck it on the way)... so that's a problem... I also can't find the bit where the column thing is, so I can't seem to change that either, though on the download page of the template it was noted that the columns and the template was "flexible"...

I really don't know about that, though it is true that you can shift the columns about, but I just can't change the widths... :-/

But anyway, the main problems not that. The main problem is that I have to find ways to make categories and sub categories, as well as the ability to tagging my posts, which is what I am lacking right now, and any blogger would know that you cannot survive without tags at at all... And this is where Wordpress beats Drupal, because Wordpress already have the categories thing done as well as giving you the option to put sub-categories and tags onto your posts, where Drupal does not (not that I know of).

If I can get that to work, then I think that I will be fine. I just need to be able to put categories and tags onto my posts. Any help on that would be really, really great... :)

But thanks for replying, rob86. :P

I don't know about everyone but the reason why I didn't answer this thread earlier was because I don't know anything about Drupal :P and why would I want to post about something that I don't know about - that would just confuse you and maybe even mislead you. The people who do know about this may not be replying because they may be caught up with other activities, or because they have little time to they give priorities to some other tasks, etc.

Anyway, as I said earlier, I don't know much about Drupal so I can't give you any advice, but I suggest you look through some good Drupal tutorial sites so that you may find some help. Here are some sites that I found:

Drupaltutorials

Sitegound Drupal Tutorial

Drupal Handbook

Learn Druapal CMS

Dtutorials

Yay!!! Another reply!!! Thanks The Simpleton... :PYeah well, even if it's a useless reply I would be really happy anyway because I got one... and I'm so very happy right now, you don't know how good I feel... :PBut I didn't realise that not a lot of people use Drupal on this forum. I actually thought that it was the most popular form of platform that people use...But then I don't know... what do you usually use then? Joomla? I couldn't get the archive thingy to work, so I stayed on Drupal instead and I actually like it, apart from the categories and tags part. But it's working really well at the moment. I guess I'll just have to wait for rvalkass to come in and tell me how to do stuff and it seems like he's the only Drupal expert here (I know that mahesh2k is a Joomla one). But yes... I think that it's a rather good experience for me though, people not replying is actually making me look for more information online, though I don't know about you, it seems like the information sites that other people give you always seem to be better than the ones that you find yourself...And I still can't find ways to add categories and sub categories and let you tag, and I've downloaded dozens of modules that claim to provide this feature. And since Drupal is meant to be the best management system platform, I really can't see how Joomla would be able to keep up with that, if it is not the best and goes more on design. I'm personally looking for functionality. But I still can't find ways to add categories into the site...But thanks so much for your reply... it feels good to be noticed. :)(P.S. Does anyone know how to use FTP uploaders? I'm trying to upload my site to my host to see how things go but I don't know how to use it...)

Ive never used drupal, so i may be wrong.

Anyway, make a backup. now! :P

I would imagine changing the CSS would solve the login alignment problem.

View the source of the page (right click, not the HTML files on the server) and look for the CSS file it is using up the top probably "default.css" or something.

Now find that file on the server, make a copy if you havent already just in case this makes the world end. At least the aliens will know why because they can read your backup CSS file.

Now look at the source code (again right click on the page in IE) and find the login part of the code and see what CSS tag is linked there perhaps "<input type=text name=username style=login_user>

Thats the bit you need. The style info. Now search the CSS file for "login_user" (or whatever its called in the real file).

If you find it then good, just change it with something like "align: left" or whatever make it flash purple and yellow, why not. Give it a fur coat (faux fur of course!)

If you dont find any CSS reference for it then em.... Give up :P Nah i dont know what to do if you dont find the CSS reference. But it's worth a look.

I cant help with anything drupal specific though!

Customization experience with drupal is very limited for me. And i don't have it installed on my local-server. So i can't help you in that. I think you'll get more help from Drupal's official support and forums. I'm suggesting you this because these questions are related to customization. And i doubt most of the Xisto users are using drupal. Very few people are using(rvalkass and some others). So you'll have hard time getting answers for your queries. In such cases, better to ask in official forums of drupal instead of hosting service forums.

(P.S. Does anyone know how to use FTP uploaders? I'm trying to upload my site to my host to see how things go but I don't know how to use it...)

FTP uploaded program or web upload feature in cpanel ? You can upload drupal themes or installation folder itself from web-ftp feature of cpanel file-manager. Else you can try web-ftp or filezilla software.

Highly recommend Filezilla, brilliant little program for FTP transactions. To use it you just open it up, enter the host (usually something like ftp.yourusername.trap17.com or ftp.mysite.com) and your username and password which you can find in control panel/your welcome email and clicking connect. Once connected i have it set up so my local drives are on the left and the remote server (which is your website) on the right, you just then need to drag the file from the left window to the right and it will upload it for you. By default i think its set with one window above the other. Just browse to the folder you want and drag and drop

Aw... what!? Hmm... I don't know then. I did try Joomla!, and I've seen that most of the sites that people have here does use Joomla! And it looks very good! But I just can't seem to make the archive function work at all... and that's a problem, and I couldn't find a good template that I can customise either, so that's rather bad for me... :-/

And since I won't get a lot of help on Xisto... yeah, maybe I'll have to go to the Drupal forums and ask around... and maybe Xisto too... they seem to be filled with technical people, and they might be able to help just as long as they don't bombard their posts and replies with technical words and such.

But Drupal does seem to be way easier than Joomla though. But how people can customise things to the fact that they don't even look like they were made on a platform is really just beyond me. How do people do that???

(Quick question: Is Drupal and Joomla what they call a CMS platform?)

I did try Filezilla, it didn't work on my Mac, even when I downloaded it. I think that this is because my Mac is on a version that has been broken and reloaded again.
My father installed Photoshop CS4 for me, and then my computer crashed. And after he reloaded it, you can tell that it is on a different version because the dock appearance is different, and since then there are many programs that I can't use anymore, like Garageband and iPhoto that I could use before - and so does the things that I download. I'm sure that Filezilla would work if I knew how to use it...

And thanks for the reply!!! :P

Yeah well, the whole point is that I couldn't get the Filezilla program to work. I tried, and it downloaded perfectly, but it doesn't open at all, and as I say previously, I believe that somehow or rather my computer has been "backtracked" to a previous version and so many programs and softwares that I have doesn't work anymore at all... If I can somehow update my computer as it was before without crashing my computer again or wiping out Photoshop off my computer then that'd be good.

But thanks for replying. :P

Instead, I have downloaded Cross FTP. I found it when I was searching for Filezilla alternatives, and it was coined as "easy for the amateur web master to grasp". But even when I downloaded it, I still don't know how to use it (it works though). And I believe that it is pretty similar to Filezilla. If anyone knows how to use that then that will be great, but as far as I can see, all the tutorials are on Windows and not on a Mac, and they look quite different, it's hard to grasp...

(Quick question: Is Drupal and Joomla what they call a CMS platform?)

Yes, Drupal and joomla are CMS platform. They'll become a complete community platform. As more and more features are added into them. CMS, forum bridges, E-commerce modules etc. Soon they'll be community platforms. And if you're confused with terms like "CMS Platforms" or etc. Always check wikipedia first or ask in respective CMS's official forums and support area. That way you'll get more help than in othe rplace.

I did try Filezilla, it didn't work on my Mac, even when I downloaded it.

You can install "Cyberduck FTP". Cyberduck FTP is for mac only. And it is free. I hope you know how to install things on mac. And there are more listed in this article. Check it out. And if you have any questions then check the respective programs FAQ and support page first.

Hmm... OK, thanks. I've started a thread on Xisto, but I've still yet have to create an account of Drupal.org and start posting my questions on there. Things have started to become a little more complicated now that I've found another new theme and I want to implement some features on both themes together to create a new unique theme, and I also want to have some javascript functions in it to make things slightly more interactive and interesting.

I'll still have to download Cyberduck FTP, though I am assuming that it will be good as all pure Mac applications are, like MAMP, and pure Mac applications are great because all the tutorials are done on a Macintosh computer (well, duh!!!), but I like it...

but I've just got a general question to ask you guys... if you wanted to upload a folder, Joomla! or otherwise (aka Drupal and/or Wordpress), in which folder should you upload it to, because there's a root folder, a private folder, a public folder, etc, etc and I don't know which one to upload it onto...

Thanks though. You guys are great at helping me!!! :P

If you want to upload it to be visible by everyone, then use the folder called "public_html".

On your root of file manager(check your cpanel). There is "public_html" folder. In order to make anything visible to public, you've to put folder and data in that folder. If you create folder and posted content in directory other than "public_html". It'll not be visible.

Okay, cool, thanks. Yes, I found the public_html folder... but I've now got a problem. How am I supposed to upload it into that and not accidentally into the other folders? Also, quick question: if only the public_html works and lets people see things online, then what is the whole point of the other folders in the first place since I won't be using them at all?(I mean, isn't it better to put the not public files like experiments and things on your computer for easy access and not waste the space that is given to you by the hosting company?)(Still trying to download Cyberduck FTP...)
