A Chip Which Can Read The Thoughts

Recommended Posts

I don't know whether it makes sense or not but if people are talking about time travel in the forum then i think it's safe to talk about my dream. I think the best help a computer can do is co-operating with human mind. Now you will say it is co-operating with human mind already but i am not talking in that sense it is something like direct interaction of human mind with a computer chip. Say in simplest form if we see a simple math question like 3.99876*6.90889 and by internal command we ask help from a computer which can read the human thoughts then it solves the question using it's alu or any thing. But you will think we can do the above task vary easily by using a calculator but it's not the end suppose some one wants to remember a whole book so just a command and whole book will be in front of virtual eyes that means scopes are unlimited it would be like a super brain. Now you will ask that what are the progress in this direction. I have heard that some gaming companies have started a system which can monitor the mood of gamers and they plant the next step according to there mood. Some company have made a device which can read the users thoughts if he only try to speak and doesn't speaks any thing and according to that command that device controls the wheel char of users this is for the users who cant use there hand leg and Tung. I think usage of these type of devises is a long hope in this direction. I know that this looks like a fantasy movies but i think most of our present has been derived by old fantasy movies. Please share your thoughts in this direction your thought can change whole future.

Yes, I would love this to happen, you know what else would be nice: A wireless mind-reader :P. THis idea is excellent but the problems that it faces are quite big. Imagine if a hacker hacked into this computer while you were thinking about your bank pin number or something like that, hacking would be at the next level, they would now have access to all of your personal thoughts. What about that 90% of your brain that does not get used for "concious" thinking, how would you be able to control that, an alpha wave is an alpha wave, whether it is a concious one or not. Other than your brain becoming "hackable", what about if they added a "write" function, then you could be very easily brainwashed. Think about that annoying jingle you hear on TV, now think about that playing 24/7 with the words "Buy Kelloggs" repeating over and over again. It would be "super advertising". This is, not to mention what China or other dictatorship countries could do with it. What if a politician got this into his/her hands, you would suddenly be voting for some red-neck farmer who waants to exterminate every living animal when you would normally vote for a left-wing party. Suppose this "computer" (yes computer in inverted comma's, I am starting to wonder whether thhis would even be a computer or a "lose-your-brain pill") got a virus, imagine thinking about Trojan.Vundo all day, it would drive you MENTAL, that is when the agitator of the Virus starts loading heaps of other Virus's into your brain (Now Winmad.exe actually makes you mad :P).Other than those risks, I am sure that it is possible to makke something exactly like a brain reader, in fact they already have one, they use it to record dreams and other things that happen during REM. I think that it is to risky to make a computer a "mind reader", it would kill all privacy and it would turn the world into a massive show of "Big Brother".

It may happen in the future, but not at the moment. One reason is that this chip might be a future development of the RFID. For those who does not know, RFID is a small chip that contains data that can be written or read by special readers. As of the moment, RFID is still in constant development to make it more secure from hackers and such.Another major obstacle this chip may have is the problem of what if the chip suddenly went haywire like what happened Doc Oc in the movie Spiderman 2. And as the poster above stated, privacy would be compromised if ever the technology was hacked or even if it is not hacked, your every thought would be easily read by others. I am also sure that there would are many problems that would arise if it were really developed, in which case it would take a long time to settle.

Reading thoughts and mind can be a invasion to privacy. and some weak people could be manipulated that way, so consider this area as dangerous. But in case of such experiments, i would love to see the experiment which can help people have dreams. As I've problem of insomnia, it is hard for me have dreams when i sleep. So i would love to see dream catcher machine, that can help my thoughts to have positive dreams. This will help have good morning start as well i guess. :P

well in ways they already have this so to speak. For amutees who are missing a limb such as a arm. they have a device which fits into the stump, that reads a impulse from the brain telling your new arm and hand which away to move or open and close. Same with a leg and foot. I know myself being disabled. (para) and having no use of my legs. I was fitted for such a device. Although it works some for me, not enough of a impulse was found for it to work to it's fulliest. I feel in the near future things like this will happen. maybe even sooner than we all think.

I certainly couldn't have said this any better. It's a dangerous proposition.
All hackers have to do is get ahold of the software. Then they start from there. I'm really skeptical about a "Thought" chip. The way I see it,there aren't enough
people in the world using they're brains as it is.
Such a thing is unethical really.Very similiar to the idea of human cloning.

What Echo_of_thunder said is an entirely different matter. This is much more practical. Definitly technology that is good.

I understand your thoughts in the direction of security but you know threats are possible in every thing even when someone have thought about a fast car or truck the some people must have some thought of frequent accidents, pollution problems. Accidents could be life taking but then someone must have thought about roads and then road rules and then about traffic signals. It must had been difficult initially but time by time it had been improved batter control in cars and trucks good roads and new computer technology is reducing accident % every year. Who knows after 100 or 200 years accidents could reduce to nearly zero.
Same example is in the field of internet banking and mail system initially when people started using mail system they liked it but then hackers came in light they started it in curiosity they distributed there knowledge and bad people started it misusing it but again good people started thinking and gave solutions of pbms it is the fight between good people and bad people and it will continue in future from the fear of bad people bad people can't stop doing good thing.
could you ever imagine the world without email, websites, computer, car, busses and trucks these all things have fear from being misused.
But i am thankful to you because you thought in this direction i was thinking a lot about this direction but never thought in this way. And off Corse the people like you and me will do the work like this and will define the direction of future.

I wouldn't like that, a chip that can read minds, It would be too invasive, like you don't have any privacy anymore. There are sometimes when you can't speak your thoughts, and is a relieve that at least you get to think them, IE if you have a fight with your boss, and you want to say a lot of things to him but you just can't for whatever reason, you can think about what you would tell him, it would be horrible if the boss have that chip it would turn out really bad for you. The mind is a little space we all have just for ourselves it will be awful if we can't have that anymore.

I think its a great idea! but in the motive of making a chip that CAN read minds why not make a chip that can prevent it? think about it being able to read others minds or not at all but also being protected with a chip that can stop others from reading yours? /txtmngr/images/smileys/smiley14.Gif and if I sound stupid note that I'm only 14 ^.^

Ohh its not like that i mean if you send a mail only authenticated person can read that. All control of that chip will be inside your hand ie. some time if you don't want to use the chip for reading thoughts just one command should be able to stop it. It also depends on you that what services you want to use on that chip like our computers(pc) it all is in our hand whether we want to connect our pc with www network or not it also is in our hand that what port we want to open. Tell me if someone can read your computers contents if you never have connected it with internet. I think once this technology will start security will be upgraded with time.
right now i have only one thing which looks a big road block in between that is whether we can implement the chip without operation or not i mean if operation will be required then idea would be a big flop but if it will be something like just putting on some body part then it should be a good idea. I remember once bill gates said in his book road ahead that if something is possible and it is good for human then you can't stop it whether you like it or not and if are not going to participate in that culture then you are going to loose the race.

As i said earlier that if there is some chip which is communicating with your mind or if there is a chip which is cooperating with your mind doesnt mean that every one could read your thought and it will be totally in your control and it is not going to control a human mind like spider man movie and we don't need any new chip to implement the security feature one chip will be sufficient for it like your CPU which handles every thing inside your computer(Antivirus also).

Mathew Nagle was the first person to be installed with a brain implant chip that allowed him to control everything in his home just by his thought. At the age of 25 when he was paralysed and his whole body was not in his control that included his respiratory system, he was operated for the implant. The technology was to trap the brain waves and process them to give desired results. The whole story was a controversial operation that had its own story with doctors and so called socialists. The operation was a three hour long process where electrodes were placed above the sensory motor cortex where the neural signals were produced to control the hands and the arms. This was fitted with a metal socket connected to the computer. The implant lead Nagle to move a mouse pointer along the computer screen just by imagining the movement of his arms. The experiment lead Prof John Donoghue at Boston university in Rhode island to acclaim his would renounce in neurotechnology. The use of this tech nology will eventually allow him to control TV, phone conversations and other devices. The mechanical movement of his hand is now possible using external ancilliaries and accessories just through his thought process.BrainGate is the next chip in design that would make the use of brainwaves and make the muscles in the body work as if physically done.
