Get Rid Of X-mas!

Recommended Posts

I think if you celebrate christmas like most americans do with Santa and a bunch of present getting/giving and gorging your faces etc etc...then you shouldn't complain that people say x-mas. For the main reason that you yourself have strayed from the point of christmas, There was no 'Santa' during Christ's time. I personally usually say Christmas, but when I am writing it on a card or i am in a hurry then I will spell it x-mas. Saying X-mas is just so lazy, but spelling it I don't see why it really matters. During the Holidays, between Late November all the way to the end of December people should refrain from saying Merry Christmas to every single person. Not everyone celebrates it. I however think on Christmas its self, and christmas eve it is okay to spread the so called 'cheer' you might have for the holiday and its okay to wish people a merry christmas since it would actually be christmas. Same for the days of other holidays during December, but unless its actually the day of the particular holiday, I think 'Happy Holidays' should be used as a replacement.I am straying off a bit, with this one but during the holidays I think its okay to have things done at school. I know when i was in elementary school we didn't just go over Christmas we went over other holidays and other cultures and i know a lot of times we even studied how in other countries they celebrate other things, and how even christmas itsself is celebrated differently in other countries. But it seems like those who do not celebrate anything have decided to ruin it for everyone else. If you don't want your family learning other holidays or any holidays, maybe you shouldn't have them in a public school. As someone who doesn't really believe in god, i dont celebrate christmas like most christians would but i do take it as a family sort of deal.

if you're going to celebrate a Christian holiday,

its not christian, its pagan and adopted by early christians to convert pagans and the like, along with the demonization of pentacles, a horned god etc.... so along those lines we can spell it how we like.
I hardly ever say christmas, i dont believe in christ or any of the bible of christian things, why do i celebrate christmas? because its no longer a religious holiday its more of an economic holiday meaning its extorted for monetary things, along with easter.

If you ask me xmas is meant to "cross out christ", anyway the Romans done that...(apologies if that offended anyone but i thought it was funny) its just for lazy people and as posted above X can also be used as in "Xian" its just easier.

And as also said Santa clause wasn't in the "real" meaning of xmas (Yes im saying "xmas" because im lazy and if i go to hell for that then i shall go quietly, its gotta be more fun there anyhoo) he was invented, well at least modified, by coca-cola as a selling point, originally it was Saint Nick i believe who gave things to children or something... so the xmas we celebrate today is so far away from the christian celebrations its crazy, im sure some christians do celebrate it as a religious holiday like my granny and grandad, they just pray and have a kinda christian get together with their church pals.

And the political correctness thing is stupid...i mean teachers aren't supposed to say "brainstorm" as its "offensive" to epileptics who suffer "brain storms" AKA fits. Political correctness means nothing and it seems "xmas" is a product of paranoia, if you celebrate it and someone says "merry xmas" say thanks and walk off, its a kind gesture. If you want to believe X is to cross out "christ" then do but i personally dont think it is, its for lazy people like me

I'd probably just have to say that if there was less commercialisation in christmas (ie retailers and megaplexes not overdoing advertising just to grab money), and its just celebrated for whats its for (Family, etc).. and the birth of christ, etc (I'm not usually a religious person), then I'd say fair enough.

I'm afraid I can't really see what's so... dangerous about the x-mas word.I mean really... is an abbreviation commonly used to make writing quicker really a threat towards tradition and the Christianity? If you people are so concerned about religion and tradition and the meaning of holidays, try applying what you believe in your own lives... I do not think that raising such debates, although you have a right to, is helping you any.Plus, it's like shadowx put it, it's more of a gift/shopping kinda holiday anymore, so I think that any religious/ worshipping concept it may have had, is now long gone... at least in the minds and hearts of most children that see this as a chance to get that video game they always wanted, and be able to play with it all day just because its christmas and the holidays.

Which is sort of sad in some ways, depends on how people looks at it. Considering the trusty TV also shows advertisement on how Christmas isnt "just about Santa Clause and gifts" and promotes the birth of Christ, etc, but some kids consider christmas to be that way (Gifts, Santa, etc).

Forget the war on x-mas. Christmas is a great time of year. I can't stand the fact taht people have to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". It's such an insane thing. It's not insulting to say that. Maybe i'm biased but I just really don't think there need to be any major changes to the way Christmas is every year.

OMG! I agree with you SOO much! I mean Jesus is the reason for the season and that "x-mas" thing is just plain stupid! :)

Sorry if this title scared you, I don't mean get rid of Christmas, but it seems like it would attract people. :( If you don't celebrate Christmas, please don't argue here about it.

Anyways, I wish the phrase x-mas could disappear! I want to get rid of it! I hope I don't offend anyone who says it(like SM :( ). The phrase seems so cruel. What you are doing is taking out the word Christ which Christmas is all about and replacing it with an X. What is that supposed to mean? We are to lazy to write out the real reason for Christmas? Instead we'd rather X it out? This seems to describe it all. Sorry if I seem like a hater here. Does anyone else feel this way?

As far as I know, the X is the Greek letter Chi (X or χ) and is often used as shorthand for Christ, especially in ancient official documents. They were signed with a capital Chi (X), to represent Christ, and then kissed. This is why X also stands for a kiss, and χ is often used as a signature, or to mark where a signature should be written.

By using X-mas you are not omitting Christ, just abbreviating. It has been shortened throughout history anyway - it was originally called "Christ's mass" then "Christ-mass" then "Christmas".

wow I'm amazed at myself for never realizing the meaning of the 'x'. And I've actually written it that way many times!!! But now that I know, I'm never ever going to write Christmas that way anymore, and I'm going to point this out to my friends too. Thanks for bringing out this issue!
