False Advertising Lame

Recommended Posts

Commercials are used to advertise a product and/or company. There is something called 'truth' in advertising, yey somehow, most prefer to lie.[This is a collaboration of my same rant from another forum]Ok, this 1800PetGo commercial says that it's faster than going to the store, and it gets delivered free. But in small print it says "free shipping only to value of over $30"And how is it faster? You order it online, you wait about 2 days, then you pay an extra $8 for it. When you can just go to the pet store, by it in CASH and it's more secure than online too.Alright, the make-up commercials. As if you didn't already know. They take a hot girl, and they somehow make her even hotter, then they expect people to believe she got that hot by using their products. Are you kidding me?You know those drug commercials? How fake are those? Why can't they make something that ACTUALLY is true. Show a girl playing with her friends, then she takes pot. THEN show her messed up. Show us what ACTUALLY happens when you take pot, then maybe teenagers would actually STOP doing it.You know those doll commercials that always show?Do they expect me to believe that 16+ year old girls play with dolls? Rofl, and there's this one where it's 3 girls, and they talk to one of the dolls.I mean, you must not have a life if you talk to a stupid doll..

Notice from truefusion:
Changed color to a more suitable one. The redness of the text made an oddness with the blueness of the board.

well if you think about it most advertisements are flase advertising. Have you ever seen a advert saying something only works so so or even no our product doesn't work at all. Yet i'm sure you have bought a few things that have been advertised how many have worked as well as they have said ?? not many i'm guessing and how many have work ok but not great a slightly bigger group i recon but the biggest group of things that have been advertised probally don't work at all to put it nicely !! But to be completely honest if a advert said come get our product it might work for you and probally won't do as much as you want would you go out and buy it ??? therefore most advertising is false or only tells you the good parts or results of the product and nothing else. Not to say that all stuff advertised doesn't do want they say but i do believe that atleast 50 percent of these products don't !!!

It's all a part of marketing. It's quite common for advertisers to have some insanely awesome deal on a poster or on TV, but to have some fine print at the bottom which outlines a minimum purchase or some other condition. Essentially though, there's only so far they can push it until some legal body can bring action against them. In Australia there's the ACCC; I know Kmart used to sometimes have 15% off Storewide ads on television, but at the bottom they'd have "Excluding cigarettes and game consoles". Now the advertisements have to actually verbally say it (however quick, even if you can't see the screen you still hear the conditions).

Alright, the make-up commercials. As if you didn't already know. They take a hot girl, and they somehow make her even hotter, then they expect people to believe she got that hot by using their products. Are you kidding me?

The problem is, you wouldn't really care about an ad with an average lookign person. In my opinion, they'd have to be outstandingly...ugly, before it would draw attention. Anyway it's all about branding. Even if you say you know the good-looker didn't use that product, you're still associating the image with that product. In the end, that's all that matters, as it may be some subconscience thing. (As in, if you see several products on the shelf, all similar, you end up picking the one you've seen the advertisement for).

Well ill ignore the fact that I dont think any female is hot, so this thought is for the most part not biased. The make up does make the girls prettier, because professionals apply it on them, and know what to do to make them look prettier. But if an average person uses the make up, they probably wont achieve the same effect, not because they are ugly...but because they are not professionals applying it on. Plus it is advirtising, I mean are you going to buy a product that was put on by a house wife, and the girl in the commercial is a simple 30+ house wife? Probably not. Its not technically false, just misleading and sneaky, but there isnt any lies to it, they just arent using everyday, apply their own make up women.

And there are a lot of times too when advertisements aren't really lying but just 'leaving out a few details'.

Advertisers and their associated companies will obviously want to try their best (and use whatever means possible) to sell you their products. Sex appeal e.g. If you want to look like her, buy it!, Fearmongering e.g. You'll need this in case something happens, Basic Necessity e.g. Cause everyone's gotta eat.... are just a few examples off the top of my head but all of them draw from things that we might potentially want or need.

Why misleading ads, you ask? Well, they need something to grab your attention. Take this following example:

Free Sex education

If the 'Free Sex' part were in very large font, while the education in tiny font, odds are most people who read it will be instantly thrown off. And while the ad is a tad misleading, the "truth" of the message is still there. The fact that it's education that is offered and not what most people would be thinking.

In the end, it all comes back to the individual on the receiving end of these ads. Sure companies will try their best to reel you in but the choice to follow suit and buy their products will be a choice as unique as choosing what you want to have for breakfast.

advertising is false, if something is that good you don't need to advertise it would sell itself by word of mouth. everything is better in an ad, ever noticed how a burger is big and perfectly made in mcdonalds and burger king ads, nobody ever gets a burger like that in the stores. How about ads for movies that make them appear funnier or scarier than they are by cramming all the good jokes or scary bits into the ad. Then there is ads for music, where they play the one or two popular songs to get you to buy the album when 90% of people end up only listening to those popular songs. I could keep going on but we all know advertising is a scam.

No matter where you go advertising is going to be false. The point of advertising is to sell or market a product, and companies will do anything to make sure their product sells. I don't mind the commercials where the product in question is actually good, but the ones that suck annoy me. The ones that tell you to text message some number to get stuff on your phone are annoying and suck too.

my favourite commercial is those drug commercials for viagra or some other drugs. they show everyone all happy and having a great time or feeling great. In the small print, there are like a thousand different side effects. Some of which are really bad. Like one drug for stomach pains actually has side effects that could cause cancer, constipation, and other bad side effects. It's really funny how you take one drug but it can cause a lot of other problems. What is the drug actually doing? Ridiculous.

I'm curious to that commercial with the 16+ year old girls playing with a doll, what sort of doll is it? Are you sure it wasn't a sex-doll or something like that? Anyway, there *are* 16+ girls out there who do play with dolls :D I know a few of them, and they own the doll because it's a magnificent piece of art, like this one for example >>

Also, I guess false advertising will always continue to exist. What else should the companies do? Use an incredibly ugly male for make-up from now on? It wouldn't sell... :D But yes, some commercials are beyond evil. Getting that certain product will make your life only way worse than it was before =/

Yeah and you know what I really hate? I have been searching for a real good mascara right? When you see the ads and pictures and models, the make their lashes look longer by editing it with digital photo editing programs or whatever the hell they do. I mean, how can I decide which mascara is good is they keep misleading me like this!? Man, maybe I have to buy all mascaras out there and test it on my self. Actually Im doing that right now

Most advertising usually goes along with the carrot and stick campaign, offering alot of stuff but it's usually a lie in the end. I can't even begin to explain how many examples of false advertising I've seen in this year alone. Seriously.
