h1dd3n 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 hey guys, check this site. it is offering 2GB of free data back up http://mozy.com
Cerebral Stasis 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 2 Gb isn't much space. I think I'd much rather either buy a spare backup harddrive, make a storage partition on my primary one, or even email myself files via Gmail. I doubt I would want to store 2 Gb of my important personal files on an online database where someone can steal or accidently (or purposefully) remove them. Heck, if I back up my stuff on a writeable DVD disk, I'd have more than 2 Gb of space, and writeable DVDs are maybe fifty cents a piece, if not less.
kawasu 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 hmm.. i hate online backups.. they take so long to recover and sotre imo. i'd rather a hard copy on another hdd or dvd. the new blue-ray disks are gonna be far more effiecnt for data backup; a whooping 50GB. ;o nice resource though. FirefoxRocks 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 Nice site, but I don't really trust it.I don't like online backups becuase people can accidentally or intentionally steal your information if the site is not careful with security. They are also slow to upload and download.2 GB isn't much space either. I'd rather use a DVD+RW to back up my data or USB Flash Drives. They are faster and more efficient.
Sprnknwn 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 Yeah, I don?t really see the point in this. If it were, say... 10 gigas or more, maybe, but nowadays almost everybody has a DVD recorder. And the meaning of backup copy seems to tell that you are saving something extremely important and you don?t want nobody to access it... nobody but you. Who knows what might happen if you put this on a public server...
Alexius 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 To the person who said that Gmail is secure, I'd have to disagree with you. It can be hacked and your files can be taken just as easily as it can be from the site stated above.
uiop 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2006 (edited) Intresting, but I have various problems with online backup solutions.1) They're slow during uploading and recovery.2) They pose a privacy risk.3) They are usually "fly-by-night" operations.I'm not saying that this backup site is any of the above, those cons are just from my personal experiences. Moolkye 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2006 This is what I am going to do. Start my on online free storage company, have people upload all their personal data, and then shut the business down and take all their personal info!Sorry I don't trust start ups! And yea, 2 gigs isn't a whole lot.
nations 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2006 Online store was a great option until DVD Burners and Media got so cheap that you can get a high quailty DVD-R for less then 50 cents. Plus, as others have mentioned, it poses a risk of the site going down or a hacker getting into your account. Although I don't think anyone would upload anything personal, they might upload something to share with a friend if the friend lives in another country or state.Other then that I can't see a purpose for this kind of storage, sorry. masterleous 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2006 Online backup services are good for sharing purpose only, so a user share his / her backup with other public users. For your backup data i preferred to burn a CD/DVD and store it in a cool and dry place. A Memmory Stick, IPOD, PDA is a my next choice
Florisjuh 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2006 To the person who said that Gmail is secure, I'd have to disagree with you. It can be hacked and your files can be taken just as easily as it can be from the site stated above.Thats a bit naive, we all know Google has a staff of the most skilled coders and other workers, and I think your data is fine with them. I highly doubt your files will be secure on a service like this however. Projects like this usually get destroyed by massive ammounts of people hosting warez files on the service, too bad but that's life, besides who needs webspace to backup their software while you have very big media like DVD ROM disks nowadays... rapidkill 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2006 "Online store was a great option until DVD Burners and Media got so cheap that you can get a high quailty DVD-R for less then 50 cents."Wow... 50 CENTS!? UAhAUhAuhAuA... I can't pay less than 1,50 in a DVD-R media in Brazil... Damn... I wish I could find it cheaper... In fact, I got happy as I could by a high quality dvd-r media for 1,65 as I bought the box (one hundred)...
ianmiller 0 Report post Posted September 4, 2006 I have tried gmail and xdrive and in my opinion online storages are no good for regular use even with a broadband internet. I would rather save some money buy a memory key if needed. However, if you just want to back-up some files then online storages are ok - still i wouldn't save any sensitive info there.
