I had the GIMP and it wouldn't work for my system.Don't know why. But as mentioned above, it was a resource hog and I couldn't get it to do much of anything, so that's out. Would PS 5.5 be okay on the 233 Mhz using 160 meg of ram? A friend recently upgraded to 7.0 and she will give me the 5.5 for free, so if it will work, should I take it?? And would Fireworks be less demanding of resources than PS 5.5?Thanks for everyone's opinions.

I have a site that seems to be using a lot of bandwidth. The stats list the users which have visited by number. (IE: xx.xx.xx.xx) I assume this number is traceable, but how do I find out if this is a legitimate user or a hacking attempt on the site. One user has used about 25 % of the bandwidth and I am concerned about it. Is there a way to find out where this user is coming from and perhaps ban them if I deem it to be neccessary?

Anima,Welcome to the best free web hosting service on the planet Earth. (At least the best one I have been able to find.) And if you are from Russia and I am Canadian, what is the bet going to be on the Olympic Hockey Tournament??? Are you old enough to remember the Canada - Russia series back in the 70's? Hockey at its best. Good to have you here... a truly International place. There are members from all parts of the world.

Has Anyone Tried Skype Voip Service?
jlhaslip replied to goldinero's topic in Science and Technology
eBay recently acquired Skype and is adding to their list of features for ebay users sop buyers and sellers can communicate more easily with each other. I do some selling on eBay and apparently we'll find out soon what exactly eBay is offering....and how much it's going to cost us! -
I like the camera phone.I upgraded from a regular cell phone in August and even though I have a digital camera, I find having the phone is handy for taking pics when I don't have the camera with me. I agree that the quality of the photo isn't as good, but it's still a picture I wouldn't have had otherwise.

And did you know that there are plants and fish-type critters that live down there? Some of them use the sulphur from fissures to sustain themselves rather than oxygen. And the absense of light is overcome by using a form of radar instead of vision. Quite an interesting topic when you think about it.

Cool Siggy. Can I assume you are an Avalanche fan???

I can't help but support Tyssen on this one. Getting something to work is one issue, Standards Compliance is another, and being efficient about both of these is still one more issue to contend with. I still have a lot of learning to do about web site building and CSS and yet I strive to make my code Standards Compliant in an efficient and effective manner. Probably goes back to having a computer where the entire harddrive was 4 Meg and everything had to be done efficiently. But the less volume of code you have to drag around is better for everyone. Your bandwidth at the server and at the clien't side, as well, so lean and mean would be the target for my code.If someone has a better way then I am open to suggestion. Notice from BuffaloHELP: Edited as reported.

So does anybody have any suggestions about which software to start out with? I know that I won't be using the newest and best software, but what does anybody suggest using with a 233 Mhz Windows machine with 160 meg of ram?I'l just be preparing banners and titles for web pages, and won't be doing sigs, etc...

It sounds too good to be true and that reminds me of the expression: " If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Hope no one gets hurt...

There are quite a few new PC games coming out that I'd like to try:Civilization 3Age of Empires 3Black & White 3Maybe you can tell I like strategy games? My first choice is Civilization 3 and I've already pre-ordered it! Can hardly wait until its release on Oct 26. Apparently there are quite a few significant changes that have been made to the game and pre-release reviews I've read so far are giving it a huge thumbs up.

Wassie Is Getting A Opperation on his toes...
jlhaslip replied to wassie's topic in General Discussion
Wish you a speedy recovery....well maybe not too speedy because afterall you can spend more time with Xisto as you said!I sympathize with you though as I know from my daughter how painful ingrown nails can be.Take care of yourself. -
Found this one late, but thanks for ther CDN Thanksgiving weekend notice. I am Canadian, too...Didn't go to Gramma's house though, I stayed home and had Turkey Smokies BBQ'd. Way less work to prepare and there is only me, so A full Turkey dinner would've been too much work.

Buffalohelp & Wassie NEW ADMINISTRATORS
jlhaslip replied to OpaQue's topic in Alerts, News & Announcements
Congratulations to the new Admins... It will surely be a 'feather in their caps'. And if you need another moderator to replace them, I would like you to consider mayank as a possible replacement. He Moderated another site which we belonged to and was an extremely capable and professional individual. Firm, but polite, in all his dealings with members. Knowledgable and helpful to all who asked. He would be an asset to the Moderator List here at Xisto. Please consider him for any vacancy you might have. JMHO. Hope it helps... -
Thanks for posting these references. I'll check them out and will use some soon. Thanks again...

Sorry about the delay getting back to you on this issue. I am currently having some computer difficulties and can't access the Internet on my own computer, so I have not been able to upload the file to a server. I will definately let you know when and where the file is located when the computer issue gets resolved. Thanks to all for helping out so far.

Maybe you reset your cache/internet temporary files? When developing a site and altering things, sometimes your browser picks up info from the local cache rather than the newly editted file, so empty your Internet History or cache frequently to force the browser to review the changes you have made. There is a Meta tag which 'expires' your page. (sorry that I can't find the exact description on short notice) which is helpful in these situations. It forces the browser to reload a new page every time you request the page and the latest modifications are shown. Perhaps someone will come along and explain it better, and I wish I could find a version to post here for you.

Hand coding works the best for me. It gives you unlimited control of the end product. It forces you to read about and learn the code. Nothing against the programming packages out there, but the hand-coding works for me... I have been learning lots from the content here at Xisto.I have been reading all the html/css stuff I can find lately. This is a great forum and there are lots of helpful members... thanks to them all.

On another thread here at Xisto I asked about re-installing windows 98se and got some good advise, so I did a hard-drive re-format and re-install of the w98se only to discover that all my drivers which I had saved were corrupt, so I scrambled around and have gotten most of them installed (I think), but the doesn't seem to be an Internet connection available. There is, however, one "unknown device" when I look at the control panel > system selection. My question is : How do I find out which device is the "unknown device" so I can get the machine working properly ??? I have the Interrupt request number and some other information available, but this doesn't help me since I am not a 'techie' type. Any help would be appreciated... thanks.

Okay, thanks to all of the responders here. It has been helpful to me in making this decision. Much appreciated.

And how to add opacity to the above code listing? Is opacity an issue between browsers as well? I try to test using IE, Firefox and Opera to get 'similar' pages.Because of the browser compatibility issues they will never be 'the same', so I don't even try.
