  1. So...you get a website operational, and then you soon discover that it's really not all the difficult to add a forum to your site. On top of this, you can get quite a few good ones for free. And the best part is, they generally permit you to make changes to the code as you please (with few stipulations)! The only problem is figuring out which one you are going to use...Electron, SMF, phpBB, Kunena, or IPS (what Xisto and Xisto uses, but it's not free), just to name a few of the ones I have managed to collect from different sources in the last week after talking with members and looking at different users' profiles/websites.So I ask this question, both for own inquiry and for those of you out there to discuss and sizzle amongst yourselves...which forum would you recommend (or not recommend), and why (not)?
  2. PHP text based web game...I'm not sure about Kings of Chaos; that's the first time I've heard of that one, but look up Tribal Wars (tribalwars.net) for another alternative suggestion to this. In case you haven't heard of it, it's a game where you and other players join and fight each other. I would also say that a MMORPGs (multi-player games) are much more difficult to create.I would have to rate myself with you, kc8ual, that I am just beginning on PHP (although it comes very easy for me since it's nearly a mix between HTML and JavaScript). It also helps when you can understand SQL and programming logic as well...good luck with that endeavor. I have faith you could do it, but I think in the end you will find this a big more daunting of a task to create on your own than you expected it to be.
  3. As I said in the PM to anwiii, I think I've taken care of this issue (he let me physically work with the source code). I'll let you hear it from his own mouth before anyone says, "Case closed," but I managed to make it display what he said it should look (and a bit more). anwiii, you were close to being right on this code from Soviet Rathe. However, as you will note, quotes must also be placed around the entire URL within url(). Since the default, it would seem on your PHP code is to start echo's off with single quotes, it would look like so: echo '<table width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" style="background: url(\'', $settings['images_url'], '/header.jpg\') no-repeat top right;">' Whether or not you wish to put the background CSS data into the table, row or cell, is entirely up to you.
  4. Sorry guys...here it is! Of course I can't check anything until the server or my site gets fixed because EVERYTHING is down at the moment (I can't even connect to the cPanel or via FTP). <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd; <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml/ ; xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <title>J L-ectronics.com - Home</title> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../resources/css/main.css" /> <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="J L-ectronics" href="../resources/rss/main.rss" /> <link rel="icon" type="favicon" href="../resources/img/favicon.ico" /> <link rev="made" href="mailto:contact@jl-ectronics.com" /> <meta name="keywords" content="J L-ectronics, J L, JL, J, ectronics, lectrinics, electronics, news, hardware, operating system, software, utility, application, internet, research and development r and d, rd, r&d" /> <meta name="description" content="We cover a wide variety of topics and resources on electronics. 5. I just had to deal with it myself today after obtaining my website, which includes Google's email service. Anyways...sometimes it would take me a good (if you call it good) two minutes to get it right...considering I had to create three accounts and log into them several times. Fortunately, you don't ALWAYS have to type the captchas, but make an error in your password spelling and you've got to do it again. Anyways, I agree that it can most certainly be a pain in the neck--straining my head to see what the next letter/number is. It wouldn't be AS bad if they very simply spread out the characters a bit more.I do find them interesting though...However, I've always figured if a computer can make them, it can also break them. True...it's always harder to decrypt then to encrypt, but it's not impossible. I've run in to several recently (I think on Xido's "Manage" account area to be honest) that are VERY simple and easy to use ( a couple strips and the same font over and over). Anyhow...I will call it interesting, no matter how annoying they may become. And flip side of the coin is that for the web hosts, they save a of time from protecting themselves against bots in other ways, that they are able to spend more time developing their website...even Google.Do I side with Google? Probably not much more than you, but I respect and appreciate the reason why it's there.
  6. Code included() in first of four lines of top.php: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> Error displayed on page: Me scratching me head:It works on my local host using WampServer...what's up with you? Is it your encoding, or are you just not XML enough to give me a straight answer? Hm...I think I'll ask on Xisto, since they can tell me better any day of the week compared to a cryptic message. I do understand that PHP has different versions...is this the issue? I'm trying to keep this site using XHTML standards, which includes that first line. Thanks!
  7. You're both right...I did (long) quality posts.Well...I'm registered, so I should be good and with them until I find another issue, but so far, so good!
  8. I must be one of few who read OpaQue's intro about the name in the Readme, so I do know that it is the name of a local joint that he visited on a nearly daily basis. But as far as the website's name, it's rather vague and under descriptive for a website hosting forum. Xisto at least HINTS what it is...but Xisto is hard to guess...I do laugh at reading everyone's thoughts on the origin in different languages though...puts a unique twist on it. In a way though, the idea is to catch and ensnare visitors onto the site and keep them addicted. But more or less, these descriptions from the other members make the site sound deceitful more than anything.
  9. Amen! I've been feeling very much like that tired feeling for the last few weeks now myself (and I'm in your shoes at the time when you were in college, I guess). Anyways...it's wonderful to hear such a wonderful story, and from someone who is considered "successful". God Bless!
  10. Guess I'm not through with this yet! Ugh! I've tried to now obtain hosting, but because I've already got the domain name registered, it won't let me get hosting until I wipe the domain name clean since they require a domain name before they can offer the service. I sent a support ticket to see if they can take care of it for me manually. Who knows? I still don't get this site all the way. I think it's great one minute, and then they do/have something that get's me irritated and worried again.I'm not going to lose valuable time to myCents if I lose my myCents along the way!
  11. It's always suggested to cover the Readme which includes an article on myCents. The other link in the red strip at the top, will take you to the [url="http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ & Support website, which is where you make product purchases. You may do so with real money or with myCents, which is updated to your Xisto and Xisto accounts (when you signup with the same email address). You don't have to worry about how short or long it's been since you've registered or posted in the forums provided your account is still considered active (you could go potentially a year or so before they remove your account from the forums). There is an annual fee for a domain: $10 per year (for most typical .com / .net / .org websites). This is a standard fee anywhere you go. On top of purchasing the domain name, you will also need to purchase hosting, which they give you several options. Domain parking is where there is where you or someone else establishes a default site...nothing much, generally a search engine, sometimes provided by the hosting company or advertising company. After registering your domain and before you get your site online, you have some wasted time that you could instead use to your advantage. By setting up some external advertisement on some pages, you could earn some money when people visit your website and click the links. Another definition to a parked domain is one that allows you to forward it on to another website. Here's a pretty good description for you: %5Burl="https://webnet77.net/ between a sub-domain, parked domain and an add-on domain:
  12. Thanks...got the domain registered now. Still was important for me to understand the rest, however. Thanks so much again!
  13. To put it bluntly: Get used it...it'll soon pass (and then it'll seem as though your hand grew or the guitar neck shrunk because you will then be able to reach most of the strings with ease. Everyone has this issue when they begin (I can't imagine many people who don't). anwiii is right that your fingers will be sensitive and that you want to try and arch your fingers a bit more (this can be both painful and difficult for a beginner). Here's the part about your fingers...eventually they'll grow calluses which will be beneficial to you. They might start as blisters, but let them pop, and play again (that probably sounds a little grotesque, but it's the only way to get them to form). Basically, you're looking for several dry layers of skin to form on top of each other (you'll begin to feel them when you start to play). The two primary advantages are that they will help your fingers from aching at the end of a full half-hour stretch of playing, and second, it actually helps the sound of your guitar, since they will be stiffer and flatter, which will give the guitar strings a bit more of a metallic sound to them. Look for them on your four left fingers and the outside of your right thumb, depending upon how you strum.Just as a side note, remember not to play bow and arrow with your strings...they can break easily enough, and it doesn't take a lot of force to make them sound notes. Don't use a pick at first if you or someone else thinks that you are prone to strumming too hard.
  14. We are sorry. Please read the fine print:***This survey is free and does not imply payment(s) will be made to the user.
  15. So I've registered a domain through Xisto - Web Hosting using myCent...I still need a couple bucks yet before I can make a hosting payment, but I hopefully plan to get that done in a couple days (shouldn't take me long, and in fact this post in itself may very well give me what I need. What concerns me: How long does it take for the domain to get registered? From what I could read, it could be up to five days, but I want to be clear on this. Is it also the same with hosting? And if I attempt to register for hosting before the domain is approved, will that hinder me in any way? What's next? I'm guessing it's simple enough to get the domain connected to hosting, provided what I mention above, but where do I go from there? I hear about a "cPanel" for Linux hosting, so I would guess I will be using that, but where is it located? One problem with this service is how many sites there are...I can understand dividing Xisto from Xisto, as well as the billing website, but you have well over four or five sites linked in odd fashions. This is what makes it confusing for me. Thanks!
  16. Love using Filezilla...although I've never tried any other FTPs, it's rather simple to use after getting the account(s) setup. Sometimes I wish there was an easy way to sync the folders so that when I click on "images" directory in the local it will also do the same on the remote (or maybe I've simply forgotten how/where to do this). I have it in 3.3.1 for sure...I never even knew it existed until now, when I tried opening multiple connects at the same time (HINT: the tabs don't show when they're by themselves, at least not by default). Anyways...this is a really fascinating feature I never heard of before!
  17. It's unfortunate, but the computer is a very, very distracting tool in today's world. Many of us believe that it is supposed to improve our lives and help us with our jobs, but we are beginning to find out that many people are so addicted to computers (myself included) that we sit around all day and don't do anything else. This includes doing chores and meeting up with people face-to-face instead of the occasional "lol" on Facebook. In exchange for his added assistance in the workplace, people get fired everyday for using business hours to conduct personal affairs. What is worse is the fact that we can't even walk outside and get away from it. More than likely you at least bring the cell phone with you--just in case you need it, because you never know when you might need to reply to an urgent email message. Unless your job is to de-arm bombs, it's probably not going to be a life threatening ordeal to leave your cell at home. Nevertheless, we feel almost naked without some form of technology in front of us, in our hand, in our pocket, on our ears, etc. Fortunately, I can't afford to pay $80 a month for a $300 Blackberry or iPhone just yet...my time will come.Take it from yours truly, a computer addict. I've always been fascinated by computers, and that is why I have gone to college to obtain my degree in Database and Web Management...does that make me a computer addict by itself? Most certainly not! But the time I spend day after day on the computer would indicate that I spend less than 3 hours on average in the waking day away from a computer. And that does not include my MP3 player that I plug into my car or ear buds. If I could skip sleep, I would be at my computer an additional 6-8 hours as well. One thing I find interesting is my desire to always want something different. I will play a game consistently for a month, do well, and then for no reason, stop playing it for another six months. The same is true with Facebook, and dare I say Xisto (someday I will lose the desire to post here for awhile, unless I have an earnest need in order so that my site can stay maintained). Many people bring up internet addiction, but I will state that this is not the same as computer addiction...only part of the entire picture. On top of the internet, some people are addicted to video games (not online flash games) that eat up a lot of resources. You can tell a video game addict when they purchase a new graphics card or something else to boost their PC every other month or so to keep up with the latest and greatest speed and graphics. Once again, something I fortunately cannot afford (my external video game systems are still the original Nintendo and Sega Genesis, both donated to me free from two of my cousins).Aside from games (both internet and PC), we're also addicted to certain brand names or media software. Right now I am running Firefox, Word, and Audacity (free audio software). I use Firefox explicitly as my browser, Microsoft Office for most if not all of my documents. Like I said before, I become an addict at one thing for awhile...Audacity seems to be it at the moment. Some of us computer geeks may have a need to test out either new hardware or software technologies. I cannot speak for hardware as much as software; being partial to programming languages, whether application (Visual BASIC), web (XHTML/CSS/JavaScript/PHP) or database (mySQL/Oracle), I am easily addicted to creating new projects (even if they don't get carried all the way through). So what can I do? Throw technology out the window? Doesn't work when it's your career. Is having a computer addiction a bad thing? Not necessarily, but like everything, take it in moderation. I'd venture to say Einstein was addicted to science, considering that he was trying to figure out the formula to "everything" even when lying on his deathbed; but look what his accomplishments has been able to do for us? Although it maybe somewhat unfounded, he likely assisted in the making of computers so that we have yet another addiction...no offense to him by any means. So there we have it...the day and the life of an addict. Could I live a life without a computer? Certainly! In this day and age? Certainly not! This is "01001010 01101111 01101110 01101110 01111001 01100001 01100010 01100011", signing off.
  18. After coming home at night tonight after being out all day at work and school, I turn on my computer to discover 15 new emails! My normal maximum is generally 6. This got me thinking...are 15 emails a big to-do, or is that common? Therefore I am entitling this as Ek-mail. Describe how many emails on average you receive each day, the largest number of emails you remember receiving, and some other tidbit.
  19. Can't I just say that I can type so fast that you can't see my fingers? Ok...so my data tells me otherwise:Net Speed: 54 WPMAccuracy: 97%Gross Speed: 55 WPMDon't feel bad at all at 70+ WPM...I'm 20 and work a keyboard everyday and I'm obviously not that good! I do find it funny that it says that my gross is better than my net...go figure!
  20. I find Xisto funny that it has been around for a long time, but sometimes a forum never gets used (maybe there's a good reason for that). Anyways...wanted to initiate this one. Below I ask some questions for you to answer (remember, no spam ads). Although you may decline to answer, give them as truthfully as possible: What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word "shopping"? What is your favorite shopping store and/or website? What merchandise do you buy most frequently (excluding groceries and other absolute necessities)? How often do you make a purchase on a SINGLE item that costs $100 (USD) or more? How do you like to shop (store, online, email/phone)? When was the last time you seriously shopped for a loved one (if ever), such as for a Christmas gift? Do you browse, even if you don't have money to spend, or plain didn't plan to spend it? Do you buy, even if you don't have the money to spend, or plain didn't plan to spend it? Idiot's Guide for Dummies..$10How I Earn Money When People Buy My Book...$15 Life takes Visa...and for everything else there's Mastercard.
  21. I suppose I could upload it to TinyPic and link it here...don't think there'll be a big issue with that since I don't earn anything in this forum anyways...stay tuned!
  22. My invention would have to be something that has to be strong enough that a LOT of weight would not crush it. As for the price, I am inquiring if $10 is possible for the holograph.
  23. I feel like no one is still quite grasping what I want to do with my site quite yet. I want to use one standard page, with menus and footers, etc., but the individual HTML content FOR EACH PAGE will be pulled in from the database and put onto the main body area of the site/page. The database would hold several field values such as page_id, page_title, page_html. Then my site would use the GET to make it as follows: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ . When the code receives this, it will look up the page data in the database, pull in all of the necessary data, and place it in the proper location. This way I only have one or two pages for the ENTIRE SITE, which will save me space due to the lack redundant data.
  24. Thanks, both of you. Although Buffalo you didn't have the simplistic answer I was exactly looking for, it gave me the solution. I think htmlentities() and html_entity_decode() is all that I really need...preg_replace() and str_replace() might do the trick too, but I don't want to spend too much time at the moment trying to figure out how to use these functions when I can pretty much do what I want with it now. And I never thought to look up the functions on the PHP website, but their documentation turned out useful after all!The only thing that I might be interested in now is figuring out how to replace line breaks in the file to "\n" and back (and I don't mean converting them to <br />'s like nl2br() does). But this is minor, and may not actually be necessary. Thanks again!
  25. Forum has been acting up today. I don't think you've been banned if you're allowed to post. Obviously I'm not knowledgeable in this area though. I bet it does go back to what we we discussing about the severe time delay on the Shoutbox.
