  4. Hi, great you will try linux. I am a debian user since year 2k (may be more, not remembering well). Before that I used to use Red Hat, but in those times Reh Hat had many problems not easily ro solve. On debian, I've installed several servers, use it as workstation, office work, etc. To first start I recommend knoppix, because it doesn't touch your actually installed system. There you can 'see' how linux looks like and try some programs, practice with commands, and so on. Obviusly as a debian user I would recommend debian. You have the complete control, easy to install, but for a first installation, maybe you should use mandriva (or mandrake) or suse. Both are more friendly. When you learn enough you can switch to debian and live happy. Try it, don't hesitate !
  5. Too wrong!!. Just read about debian and all derivatives. Its completely free, extremely stable, well supported, and so on. Official website: http://www.debian.org/. To download some distributions, justo go to: http://iso.linuxquestions.org/ Use linux, learn linux, live linux and be happy, free and independent,
  6. Dear varnerexpress. Here is some code to do what you want. It is based on JavaScript. <html><head><script language='JavaScript'>function add(){ var names=document.getElementById('names'); var text_field=document.createElement('input'); var node_after=document.getElementById('name1'); var node_inserted=names.insertBefore(text_field,node_after);}</script></head><body><form><div id='names'>First Name:<input type='text' name='name' id='name1'><input type='button' value='Add name' id='add_name' onClick="add();"><br></div>Surname:<input type='text' name'surname' id='surname1'><br></form></body></html> _________________________Vote me if usefull.
  7. On Linux I use Kino. It has editing functions (easy to use) and can capture via a firewire port easily and well supported.Also, has several plugins and can handle multiple formats.Finally, is open-source which (in my opinion) one of the best advantages.Cheers.
  8. CRT monitor prices depends much on where you live.Please, don't make all general to what happens in your country!!

  10. Some years ago I found really usefull use Latex for big documentation projects. At this time, I am not using it as I should because I have to write documents shared with traditional MS Office users and they found really difficult to write a document using latex. The new Latex3 is coming. It has many bugs to be solved but the developers says that it will have many new features and improvements. Is dificult to find a program (let's say a WYSIWYG), easy to use and producer of clean latex code. Maybe the most used is LyX, and despite of it is open source, is not popular. Latex can be run on different O.S. and produce high quality documents. What is your opinion about? Do you use it? Do you know it? Let's make an effort to make it more popular!!.

    Ubutu

    Ubuntu is designed to end users and tries to be more friendly than other distros. It is based on debian and has some problems with that. Those problems start when you try to use some multimedia packages like mplayer.Some multimedia programs are considered as non-free by debian, so when you try to install them you need to use a repository different to the stardard one's and have to edit the sources.list manually. That is sometimes annoying to end users.Other thing is Ubuntu is sponsored by a private company and has a lot of paid publicity over the internet that makes they popular. But, for me, better is debian. Maybe Ubuntu is the starting path to a pure debian instalation.Just, some opinions on the topic.Cheers.
  12. Try Wine (https://www.winehq.org/) or use an equivalent program native on linux.
  13. I want to do some action when I click on a paragraph (for example). Here is the code: ...<script>function refresh_data(){alert ('test');}</script><p onClick='refresh_data();'>Refresh</p>...This works perfect on Firefox and on IE 6.0 and greater. The fact is, it doesn't work on IE 5.0. What should I do? Re-design everything to allow all kind of browsers (including those not so old and much used like IE5.0) or recommend users to upgrade their borwsers?. On an Intranet service I can limit the design to some browsers but when it is a commercial and public application, I can't be loosing clients!!. What do you say? Is so difficult to use standars? What's your experience? Here is an interesting discussion.

  18. Apart from firewall and antivirus, you need to protect the 'air' part. Most Access Points implements security based on WEP which is not a good solution but is better than nothing. Nowadays WEP can be cracked in minutes. New equipment show bring WPA, which is more convenient, to secure the network. Also you can buy adapters to support WPA. There is a good article that treats this topic in http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. Hope this helps.
