  1. Well then you can't usea 2TB SD card.
  2. Albert Einsteins view of time and this view of time are completely different. One is atomic time and the other is time perception. When he said that time is relative he meant that it is relative to a reference point in space just like motion is relative. And interestingly I think that the time slowing down for boredom is different again to the one mentioned at the top of this forum, otherwise being bored has a similar effect to dropping from a 12 story building, in that it slows time down.
  3. This isn't what the video is demonstrating at all. It has nothing to do with relativity or the speed of light. When the guy gets released from the top of the drop he feels like he is going to die, fight or flight kicks in and adrenaline is released into his body. This in turn kicks his body into high gear allowing him to perceive the world and react much faster than before, which in an actual near death experience can be the difference between life and death. If he were to continuously fall at this rate then his perception of time would return to normal pretty quickly as the adrenaline would wear off. Pilots flying jets might get kicks of adrenaline every now and then but not continuously while flying. As for age, well if anything the person would age faster in this drop situation for two reasons. For him time slows down while slows down while stays the same for us, so for him the drop might feel like 5 seconds while looks like 4 seconds to us, therefore he has has a higher percentage of his life in that 4 seconds than we did.Secondly the adrenaline entering his body makes it work faster and harder than normal. This would be detrimental to his body otherwise it would run like this all the time. The reason the body saves it for "emergencies" is because the outcome of not using it would be worse than using it.I hope this helps.
  4. While magnets are always the coolest solutions to all sorts of problems they are not always the most practical.First off, have you ever tried using a magnet to levitate another magnet? The need to be held in place or the whole thing flips over and sticks to the other end, which would be very bad in the case of a building.Secondly, k_nitin_r made some good points about interference and and really messing with anything around... planes would get all kinds of navigational interference from all these highly magnetic buildings too.Lastly, say the power goes out for whatever reason, or something malfunctions in the magnetic adjustments, if the system fails for whatever reason the structure needs to be stable by itself, in this case the building is not tethered to the ground and so could plausibly be even blown over. But what is an interesting and useful idea is the adjustable magnets on the side which keep it stable during an earthquake. Replace the magnets with arms or levers or pneumatic pistons and you have something that could be very beneficial. By adjusting these arms to keep the building level throughout an earthquake would prevent any damage within the building. And this would work reasonably well as due to preservation of momentum the building would have a natural tendency to not move also. The arms would have to be strong, quick and agile, and would have to hold there position even in a loss of power. But without the magnets this has potential.
  5. Actually, reading over the original post again, this is nothing like a fridge, its probably more akin to a lava lamp. It isn't proper phase change cooling like the technology inside a fridge, this just uses convectional current inside the heatsink's pipes to move the substance from a hot end to a cool end. The substance doesn't actually need to change phase for this to work, but it probably makes it more effective as the density/buoyancy of the substance would change more dramatically making the cycle faster. The only think you probably need to look out for is to make sure you have the heatsink oriented the right way up. Make sure the cold part of the pipe is above the hot part otherwise this won't work at all.
  6. Its SDXC on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card%23SDXC Its just a new specification for SD cards, like SDHC increased the maximum capacity possible, so does this. It doesn't mean they can put 2TB on it yet, they have just given it the room to grow. Memory cards will still increase in the capacities they are at the moment, and will eventually reach 2TB. But for now its definitely not the file system (exFAT) which could cause that much of an increase.
  7. Yeah, a solid state drive is faster as long as it connects directly to your IDE or SATA port on your motherboard. Its generally the option people go for if they want either fast performance, quiet operation or low power requirement. But your costs will sky rocket and your maximum capacity will plummet. Ideally the way you use these is to hook one up as your primary disk and put your operating system and any extra data you wanted to be able to load quickly. Then all of your less essential programs or archive data put on a large magnetic disk.
  8. Yeah, well in a forum like this wear posts contribute to a credit system then more control over spam is always a good idea. But I mean in general forums, its best just to leave it be unless it is hugely offensive/damaging or it becomes so common that 1 in every few posts is a troll. The example given by JayChant is a pretty tame example of something that shouldn't be reactively deleted.
  9. I don't think that these threads should be deleted, people need to learn to care less about someone purposefully trying to wind them up on a public anonymous forum. And until they do these posts will keep appearing and we'll all know that the problem still exists.
  10. Well yes, its unlikely a language or word can ever become extinct if one of the speakers of the language/word is still alive, their brain will hold a record of the word that could come back at any time. Unless they somehow got amnesia or something but that is special circumstances.
  11. The problem with this logic is that you list all the languages you know to still be in use despite being old or out of common use. To be truly extinct they would be by definition unknown and unable to be used as examples. For example, what language did the people living in the Central African region speak 5000 years ago long before any kind of record was made of their words. Because languages are constantly changing it would be highly likely that there are words and entire languages from places like this that are no longer used or even recorded. For this reason it has to be true that some words and languages have become completely extinct over the passage of time.
  12. Well if the human race survives long enough for that to happen then we won't have to worry about it. Either we will have moved on from this solar system or we will be able to prevent it by feeding it with fuel from another star.
  13. Well I think I have an even better idea for this, produce it as a small metal disc which slips in at the end of your AA, AAA or small CR batteries. That way you don't need to charge it and it doesn't have to be stuck to the outside of your remote, or keys it just idles there until it receives a specific radio wave and then starts beeping.
  14. The thing with exploded reactors is that most of the energy has already been dissipated. The remaining radioactive waste is just dangerous to living things and not really volatile. For a reactor to explode a critical mass of radioactive materials needs to be accumulated into a small area such that the radiation emitted from the material causes an exponential increase in radioactive activity causing the explosion. The reason radioactive waste from reactors is "waste" is because they can no longer be used for useful nuclear reactions any more and the only thing they can do is store it up. So while things can go wrong locally when dismantling the reactor, such as radioactive waste escaping into the eco-system, it is highly improbably that any explosion could result, let alone a global one.
  15. Well you really outdid everyone there cicala. Just one question What does per day per century mean? Shouldn't it be one or the other. Unless somehow it only increases on one day of those 100 years. I found an interesting way to measure the speed of light using a microwave and marshmellows:
  16. sonesay is right, these devices would require external power to function, I have thought about this idea myself as I have one of the old xbox's. I think there is actually wireless devices you can get for xbox's anyway which plug into the network port and power and then transmit as wifi. The major problems or thoughts with this idea are:- Are all of these devices coupled as pairs? So do they need the receiver to function? Does this mean that it won't take advantages of current wifi networks in the area? This would cost more but if they just worked individually and just used wifi then the advantages of such a system aren't as great.- If they are all paired up then does it need to use wifi? How is the security of the connection established if there is no way to access the devices software? If the security is standard and offers no configuration does this make it easier to hack into, or similar devices interfering? These are just some things to think about. Hope it helps.
  17. The real word for noob is newbie which isn't a word itself anyway. The word nub means something completely different: Explain what you mean by words being "extinct" but not erasing them from our dictionary? They are hardly extinct if they are still part of the language but not really used.
  18. Depends what you mean by 100% efficient. Technically all machines output as much energy as you put into them, but some of the energy output is undesired such as heat.Solar energy uses energy radiated from the sun, so it is technically not free, as it is using up the fuel that is inside the sun. And there are some theories about obtaining free energy from zero point or vacuum energy. That may be, but the water on the down side is pulling water from the upside to replace itself. There is no way that it could pull extra water as the mechanism doesn't allow for that. If water is going to be extracted from the top without the replacement of air or some other substance then extracting that water is going to take as much energy as pumping the water directly from the first tank. Take for example the following illustration. The water is trapped in the tube much like a syphon but with no flow. There is water at point A where we want to extract it, but to remove it we either have to replace it with air which quickly means there is no water left to remove. Or we need to remove it without replacing water, which means that water will be pulled up from B and so removing the water will require much more energy to remove. The same is true of the sphyon.
  19. Sure, my words can have meaning.Arrownomious - describes when a words meaning is completely unrelated to its etymology.Whether the word has a meaning or not though is irrelevant. That word is extremely likely to go completely extinct before very long. No one will use it, it won't get proper recognition. It will disappear from existence. And even if by some fluke it did gain popularity, there are many words like this that will not, and will go extinct. So therefore its entirely possible for any word to go extinct given enough time and change. Does anyone know what word cavemen used to describe the sky? No? Then that word is extinct.
  20. What about the word I have just created "Arrownomious". It hasn't existed till this point, and won't exist beyond the context of this forum. And once all record of the forum has ceased to exist it will be "extinct". And even if you think that it may stick around on internet archives and google, then what about the word I just made up in my head right now. By tomorrow I won't remember it any more and it will be extinct with no way of returning.
  21. Yes, I think you are right. I mean I am sure that someone more experienced in this area might be able to look at it and give reasons why this wouldn't be possible, or know that it is, but given my experience I cannot answer that without trying it out.Although thinking about it now, I am actually leaning towards the possibility that it isn't possible. The pulling of water from the first tank to the top is based on the pull of the water in the pipe between the top and the last tank. To extract water from the top position without allowing air to enter into the system requires more water to be pulled from the first tank, and therefore would cost as much energy as pumping it from the tank in the first place. A smaller pipe on the way down wouldn't help either, as it would only pull enough water to keep itself full. The only possibility would be to replace the water taken with air, which would remain in the pipe and not necessarily break the syphon, but that would only work so far, once too much water had been replaced with air the syphon would ultimately end....On the plus side, with a water wheel this would be entirely possible. Water fills up buckets dangling from the wheel mid way, and then dumps them at a lower level on the other side. With this model you could work out how much of the water from each bucket you could take without stopping the cycle.
  22. Cool, I'm glad you got it working. I don't know too much about balloon tips myself, I've mainly worked only with VB6 and only very little with VB.net. Good luck.
  23. Yeah I've seen them before, they are a real pain to get rid of. And once I did manage to delete all trace of it it still opened the floodgates for many other viruses and spyware.
  24. I don't think there is any problem with 2D fish swimming up, down left or right. Gravity has much less effect under water. As for air, flapping downwards is probably not a very effective flight mechanism, 3D birds only do this went they take off because it requires too much energy to keep in the air like this. Air travel often involves speed so that gliding is possible, and as such turning around isn't much of a problem, it would just use its momentum and whatever it uses to turn to flip itself the other way and keep flying. And reversing would likely be out of the question in that case, but if they did just downward flap then it could possibly be more likely.
  25. I think in this system there would be 3 tanks. An input tank, an output tank and a ... middle tank.In the normal syphon system the input tank is higher up than the output tank, but the pipe between the input and output tanks raises up higher than both tanks.I guess the question is how can we take some water out at the top of the system into the middle tank without breaking the syphon.
