  1. How much are the rest of you guys paying (you US guys)? I'm from Long Island and I payed $2.40 the other day. It sucks here, its even higher now. It's usually $45 to fill up the tank on my explorer.
  2. Right now I have my school email @rpi.edu and yahoo. I also have a gmail account, but I pretty much just have it to be trendy. I dont actually get email there.
  3. Right now I'm rocking 1400x1050 on my IBM thinkpad T40. I think its a 15" screen. 16 bit color at 60hz. Theres not really any point in going higher than that on the refresh rate.
  4. When I first started out like 6 years ago when i was in junior high, I did the rookie thing and used lots of frames. Then I moved into tables, and I'm still a huge fan of them. I remember when everyone used tables for everything. I havent done much designing in the past 3 years or so though, so I didn't break too much into using CSS to control layouts. Apparently thats the thing to do now, so I guess I'll have to learn. Theres seems to be a huge arguement over whats better. I still think tables are safer for browser compatability, which makes me tend to stick with them. Then asside from the HTML stuff I experimented a lot this year and learned javascript, asp (VBscript), and perl. So I'm definitely starting to incorporate those. More perl than anything. Recently I made a tool to randomly assign party jobs for my fraternity. It also lets you make specific assignments before the script runs. I'm also trying to write my own scripts for everything like form mail, and banner rotation etc instead of using the free ones online, so I learn more that way.I haven't broke down and learned PHP yet however. I'll probably start on that as my next project. PHP seems to be pretty big in the industry right now. I kinda missed out on that boat as well.
  5. Wow thats awesome. It's probably more of a novelty than something useful, but I'll use it from time to time. My resolution is 1400x1050 (yeah a little large) and it looked perfect.
  6. Is anyone here who's in college or an alumni a member of a fraternity? I'm a brother of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Just looking for some fellow greeks...
  7. Yeah, they just don't want you copying a tutorial off of a website or something and trying to pass it off as your own writing. As long as you wrote it, then you're fine.
  8. Not when you're learning it doesn't. He wants to learn how to program. Its more important to learn good code structure and documentation, different programming conventions, object oriented programming (writing classes), different data structures like arrays, lists and trees and the algorithms that you use on them and the tradeoffs between using certain sctructures/algorithms etc etc. Once you know how to program then you can worry about what you want to make and what language is better for the job.
  9. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. You wrote it, and have the copyright to it. If the TOS says you aren't giving up the right to post your work, then you definitely can. I'm pretty sure they can't make you forfeit that right anyway, even if they do put that in the TOS.
  10. Yeah, I am also a smartFTP fan. I was going to try cuteFTP but didn't want to pay for it, so I kept looking and found smart ftp. It's real simple, drag and drop etc...
  11. Noooo... I would definitely rather have my eye scooped out with a fork. You have ten finger nails that need to come off as opposed to one eye ball. And the fingernail thing is supposed to be really painful. On the downside, your eye won't grow back...but your fingernails will. Ugh, it hurts just thinking about this.
  12. Yeah, I was really confused how to get the results too. The problem is that when you click vote, the results appear in a pop up window. So disable pop-up blocking and you will see the results.
  13. I don't think that this idea is necessary at all. The purpose of the hosting policy here is to build a community. Part of that means every member needs to stay active at the forums to maintain their hosting. So if a person was being an active member like they should, they would be aware of their credits... or not even have to worry about their credits period. A notification wouldn't be necessary, and might even be counter-productive.
  14. Yeah, my iPod battery stopped holding a charge. I'm kinda pissed, as its out of warranty and Apple wants like $100 to replace it. Too bad they don't make it easy for you to just change the darn battery. I might do it though, because I cracked the screen a bit. Hopefully that won't matter to them. For $100 it better not, haha.
  15. This site is hilarious: Which is worse? Being in a dark scary room alone: 31 % Being in a well-lit room with Michael Jackson: 69 %
  16. Nah, definitely not. For me 13 is actually a pretty lucky number. I moved into my current house on Friday the 13th. Also, my dad is the 13th child in his family. I have a few more references to 13, but I can't think of them all right now. I always try to wear the #13 on sports teams too haha.
  17. Hoooooly crap, there is no way I would ride that thing (kingda ka). I'm getting the chills just sitting here, for real. I definitely ride roller coasters though, and I think it would really suck if all rides go digital. I don't see this happening though, as they are 2 different types of rides and they have different effects on your body.
  18. I'm pretty sure he tried that a few years ago with like the Wizards or some team. It didn't work out so well, although he would play like half the game and still get 20 pts.
  19. How do you get the status bar to show up? I checked it out after reading your post, and found it under View > Status Bar... except that Status Bar is greyed our and unclickable. I tried with various text files. What am I missing here? I have windows xp pro if that is of any relevance.
  20. Just because Michael Jordan is gone doesn't mean basketball is dead. I think that is a terrible way to look at this. Sure he was the best all around player, but every player in the game right now has his own strengths as well. There are players who are better defensively, better shooters, better ball handlers, better freethrow shooters etc. The list goes on. I think you should appreciate the players for their strengths, and just have fun whether you are playing or watching. Thats the whole point of sports like basketball anyway. Besides, why do you want another Jordan? It would be a lot better if somebody brought something new to the table, rather than matching him.
  21. I don't know about you guys, but the default pop up blocker for firefox is definitely not perfect. In fact, I find I get a lot less popups using IE with the google toolbar than I get using firefox. I also don't like the way firefox displays certain html tags, such as table borders and font sizes and such. I guess I got kinda used to designing for IE. That being said, I still like firefox. Everyone keeps saying the same things, but most of it is true. Tabbed browsing is definitely pretty nifty and the extensions are key. From the development standpoint it is also a lot better, such as the javascript error console. Firefox is also a lot more tweakable through configuration files, which is good for users who know exactly what they want. I just really started taking firefox seriously this year, and it's been good so far. I still need to go back and forth between IE and firefox though for certain websites. I use firefox as my default choice, and have an extension that allows me to view any page im looking at in firefox in IE with a couple mouse clicks. This makes switching a little less annoying.
  22. Do you mean for an entire website (lots of files), or just one webpage (one file)? I have no clue about Dreamweaver, I don't use WYSIWYG editors. However, most good text editors have line numbering, so you could tell very quickly how many lines of code there are. For example, editplus (https://www.editplus.com/) has this feature. Just open up your HTML file in there, and scroll to the last line.
  23. C++ is not a program. C++ is a LANGUAGE. Other languages for example are Java, Perl, Fortran etc etc. You write your C++ code as text in a .cpp file, and then compile it so that it is executable. Then you can run your program. An example compiler would be Microsoft Visual Studio. If you want to learn C++ I suggest you find a book from the library or look at some online tutorials. As for a compiler, I got Visual Studio .NET for free as a student at my college. It's pretty much the de facto standard compiler. The visual studio site is https://www.visualstudio.com/ . They should have information on how to purchase the compiler.
  24. I try not to fantasize too much. I like my ford explorer. It's fully loaded... 6 CD changer, power seats, windows, locks.. moon roof. Mostly I like it because I can throw my bike in the back and go to the skatepark, or anything else I need to haul around. Plus its pretty useful for other stuff if you know what I mean
