Arrr! The Pirate Bay Be Here To Stay?possibly
Nabb replied to Tramposch's topic in General Discussion
What do you mean when you say that The Pirate Bay is illegal? They host torrents and a tracker. Together, these allow users to connect to other users who have the illegal material. There is no illegal data hosted on TPB's servers. -
Get Ad-revenue For Writing/posting Here
Nabb replied to OpaQue's topic in Alerts, News & Announcements
I'm fairly sure it means last poster on the boards - this is what my revenue graph looks like (it goes from under 50 to several thousand - explain this...): It could be something like this: Day 1: 12PM: You make one post. 1:01PM: The next post is made. Day 2: 12PM - 1PM: You make 10 posts, then go to sleep. (no one else is online at this time) 1:01PM: Someone else makes a post. You have an hour of 1% chance of your ads being shown anywhere, and thus you don't notice a difference. EDIT) Okay, something I completely missed that should make it obvious that it's last poster on the board - I don't remember posting in any of the pages in the listings of the top 20 pages by clicks (which are all from Xisto!) So it's a little biased to the time zone you're in.. -
And yet the quoted value for downloads is 24 Mb/s, and I can download at up to 2 MB/s (16 Mb/s) - with multiple connections of course.

Net Send Alternative For Vista? which is the best?
Nabb replied to brandonjbegle's topic in Computer Networks
I think you'd want to use msg.exe - or alternatively download a replacement for net send. social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/17ab8b3c-2320-40a1-a377-aa76fdad7351/no-net-send-on-vista?forum=windowsgeneraldevelopmentissues has details for both. -
That's an interesting idea that never crossed my mind and it is probably true that Flash websites are mostly static - but you should note that Flash does have a lot of capabilities, and it is possible (for example) to have it read and parse xml files.

This will probably lead to power abuse. While one-liners are often discouraged, posting more than one line is not a law, and drawing out a response can end up being annoying and overly wordy where a simple sentence would suffice. On top of this, due to the fluid width nature of the boards, any post without explicit line breaks can be a single line if you stretch the browser enough - maybe we should change it to an 'under-forty-worder' or something? Reporting posts should be enough to keep a thread clean, having moderation powers will lead to bias as SM points out (and it was the first thing that came to mind as I clicked on the link to the thread), and the myCENTs system complicates things more.

Your information and passwords are not going to be stolen unless the website you use is hacked, you have an insecure password, someone is sniffing your wireless connection (if you have one), or you have a keylogger/virus on your computer. It is true that exploits are occasionally discovered, but these are readily patched. As for the patch mentioned, it should speed up your browsing speed somewhat, as items can load simultaneously. This means that you be able to notice the speed increase more on websites with lots of images, frames, and multimedia objects. It probably won't have a noticeable affect for those on dial-up, because on dial-up most of the connection bandwidth is used up already when loading pages, so multiple connections do not have the extra bandwidth to make the page load faster. With regards to people commenting on modifying the registry - as long as you follow the instructions properly (i.e. don't delete / change other keys), there shouldn't be any problems.

Hold on - does last poster mean the last poster in the thread, or the last poster on the forum. I initially thought it meant the last poster of the thread, but it would better explain the traffic spikes if it were the last poster of the forum (now to find the right time-zone...) -
Google can index text in Flash files. The website Flash 'n' SEO shows what Google is able to index. Personally I don't like websites only in Flash. It will not function for those without (the latest version of) Flash, meaning you're killing off a bunch (although a low bunch) of your traffic. It is hard to bookmark certain sections of the website, as there is often only one page - in which case we also have the problem of having to load all the pages on the website when it's unlikely for one to access them all (the alternative is using loadMovie, but by the looks of it, it doesn't index). If you do use one page for each page, then I suppose it's better Also remember that Google will index the swf (Flash file) instead of the html. If someone from Google visits the page, you will need to ensure they are treated properly (viewing a swf from a browser often results in the object being full-screen). Another thing you lose out on is the progressive loading of a page - you can't really start reading the text on the page while it's loading if it's in Flash. You need to make sure that you aren't forcing the user to load images before they can read text also - either load the image externally or have it on a later frame to load (the choice if you use vector graphics from Flash). The positive I suppose would be probably a smaller load for the user (and the server!), as long as you don't force load everything at once

For myself, I view piracy as extending the powers of trials. I had used an illegal version of Adobe Flash 8, and then Adobe Flash CS3, and proceeded to purchase Adobe Flash CS4. I would never have made a purchase if I didn't have the (much) extended trial. This would probably be the same scenario as many other people with all kinds of software. When it comes to things other than software - games, movies, music - I support those which I consider worthwhile. If I download a game to find it is good, I am likely to purchase the game. This means that the producing company has more money to create more good games. Of course alone, I have no impact on the overall profits of a game. However, many peers of mine share the same views, and I wouldn't be surprised if many other people also operate in this manner. With regards to piracy rates - the value quoted by rayzor of 25% can be far from correct. For a game which is distributed only via the internet, the piracy rate is bound to be much higher. For example, the PC game World of Goo (with no DRM) by 2DBoy has an estimated piracy rate of 90%. Ouch! (I personally obtained the game from someone who worked in the same building as 2DBoy! (or something like that))

As far as I know, the myCENTs of here and Xisto are separate, but they both credit to the Xisto account (assuming you have the same email address used). This means that posting here and on Xisto have mostly the same effect, except that you'd probably get better Kontera results off Xisto (as it is a larger forum) - and you could have up to 199.98 myCENTs total and it wouldn't credit (but it's pretty unrealistic to have 99.99 myCENTs on both here and Xisto) -
Learned On Their Own Who here is self tought?
Nabb replied to Echo_of_thunder's topic in General Discussion
I've learned programming from the internet mostly. When I was around 8 or 9, my cousin introduced me to VB (he told me that making snake would be easy, but I couldn't work out how ), and now I know PHP, ActionScript, JavaScript, BF (<-- lol), and probably a few more esoteric languages Once you grasp the basics of programming, learning new languages is mostly about learning the syntax. High school for me had a little programming (in the years when I was 10 (VB) and 12 (a little AS, but it was mostly animating in Flash)).I've also taught myself a lot of mathematics, which high school teaches much too slowly. Wikipedia and Mathworld rock!Hey, I'm pursuing Computer Science and Mathematics in university -
Is There A Way To Prioritize Incoming Traffic With A Router?
Nabb replied to rayzoredge's topic in Computer Networks
I'm not sure if this is possible without programming anything of your own. What you could do is set up a schedule for limiting the speeds at the times of the day when you use the internet the most, and having the speed run at the maximum at times like 5am. I'm sure uTorrent has built-in functionality for this. You may need to limit the upload rate, as games might hog this. -
Since recently (starting 20th January), some days have been reaching me hundreds, or even thousands of impressions, much more than the usual 10-20 impressions. This has been on and off (some days get almost no impressions, while others get thousands) in a seemingly arbitrary pattern. Is there any official message regarding the spikes in impressions? At this rate, I could be getting paid before the end of the year (rather than around 2200)

I voted for Avira. I'm not surprised that I'm the first, because I know that it is a somewhat obscure brand compared to the more common names like AVG. Avira is one of the best (if not the best) anti-virus software. According to av-comparatives.org, it has the highest detection rate for viruses. Of course using a 'poorer' anti-virus is only going to be a problem if you are the type of person who opens untrusted programs, visits websites which are likely to contain viruses, use Internet Explorer (because browsers such as Chrome immediately alert you to when a website you visit hosts malware), and other such insecure practices (also having known extensions not shown is pretty bad )

How To Defend Yourself From Being Hacked?
Nabb replied to ackotheadvertiser's topic in Computer Networks
Firstly, it is important to use a secure password. There are programs available which will bruteforce (guess) your password via ftp (which is infeasible if you're using web-hosting from Xisto due to the automatic IP ban after several failed login attempts), and of course it is possible that someone wrote a script to bruteforce your password if you have a login script on your website. You should try and have letters, number, and also symbols in your password, and ensure that it isn't something that would be able to be found with a wordlist (using a random combination of characters is best). If you have manually coded your website (or parts of it), look for any places where SQL injection could take place. You should look at every parameter passed by the user and ensure that all the data is sanitized. On top of this, you should ensure that passwords stored in a database are hashed securely - a hash like SHA1 would work fine. If you're running any pre-made scripts (forums, CMS, etc), you should always make sure it is up to date. Some such scripts will automatically search for updates (such as Drupal, with a cron job), but if the scripts your website uses don't, then it is important to either regularly check for updates or subscribe to a feed which will inform you of updates (if available). Running an old version will likely mean that there are security vulnerabilities (which is why there would be a newer version!) What forum are you talking about? -
I think you're missing the point that he's getting the 'Click to activate and use this control box' message. I would personally suggest using SWFObject, a javascript file to be included which information and download links can be found here. I'm fairly confident that using SWFObject bypasses the need for an initial click to activate the Flash content in Internet Explorer, but I haven't checked. The alternative is a hack in javascript, a quick google search returned this page for a way to remove the alert. But this is for using the dual object-embed method (using only embed doesn't work in some browsers as far as I know). I've found a comparison page, which seems to list the different ways to insert a .swf into a webpage and their pros and cons - it can be found here

Most antivirus software should do the job. I personally recommend Avira, which is one of the best available antivirus software. It also features the best available on-access scanning which means if you download and open a virus, it will stop you. I would also suggest downloading Spybot S&D and and Ad-Aware.

The Entire Internet Is Malware! (or So Google Thought)
Nabb replied to galexcd's topic in Search Engines
I saw this one too, I probably should've posted when it first came up. Here's the image I took: -
Haha, I see this all the time. It is fairly annoying, especially when it is the original poster asking for advice and the advice only arrives after several years It could also be annoying if it's something like 'so and so beta released' and someone replies that it's now in version 3 or whatever - I see things like this frequently on another forum I visit. It isn't always an annoyance though, if a user has something productive to add that could stem discussion from the thread again then there should be nothing wrong with that. I had to laugh when I saw this post, a guest replying to a somewhat old thread assuming the topic starter (galexcd) was not looking at the thread anymore, to which he replied

Instead of stopping the message from being sent, something could be added like "This message may be a phishing attempt - search google about phishing to learn more ", as Gmail does. This could be disabled for members with more than 10 posts or so.

I think you're thinking about magic_quotes_gpc, which is removed from PHP 6 as stated on the linked page. This (as well as addslashes) has the vulnerabilities of SQL injection with certain multi-byte character sets, and example can be found here (this is from three years ago, but I couldn't find anything about it being fixed..). And so, it is always best to use mysql_real_escape_string, and you should stripslashes if magic_quotes_gpc is on (you can check by using get_magic_quotes_gpc()).
-
I have the free edition of Avira which is enough for me. Well on top of that, I have Spybot S&D, which has a built-in registry monitor (TeaTimer). Although it isn't just your anti-virus, if you're smart about what files you download on the internet, then you won't need to rely on it.
-
Using addslashes is usually not the best method - from what I've heard, it is possible to use certain multi-byte character sets which could cause the backslash added to go in the wrong place and not actually escape the quote. Also, removing common words that are SQL commands will affect posts that have those words even if isn't an injection attempt - for example it would be quite difficult to write a post about SQL The best method is to use mysql_real_escape_string($string). This does not have the vulnerabilities of addslashes. Using $_POST[submit] shouldn't work, unless for some reason submit is defined by PHP to be the string 'submit', which it isn't. You would need to use $_POST['submit'] (or alternatively with double-quotes, but single-quotes is probably better)

Nice, I haven't came across that website before but it does sound like something fun to do for a while I haven't gotten any spam from these forums, but if I ever do I might just try baiting them. Thanks for the tip miladinoski
