  1. It's a news I read in a local computer newspaper, and I can guarantee that they wouldn't provide false information - after all, they do have a 15-year-long tradition
  2. I agree that these two colours aren't good for this age group (which I am a part of). You should think of using brighter colours, but not to much variety - even if it's a "cheerful" web site, try limiting yourself to two or three colours. Let's say a white background (or a light grey), black text (or a darker shade of gray) and some mild colours in addition to these two "main" colours.
  3. Yeah, but that's the users fault. He downloads torrents and risks getting his computer infected. But he also seem like a person who cares a lot for these things. Not to mention that he could get rid off most of these virii by a single computer scan. But this malware is different. No matter how much you try to protect yourself by using high quality anti-virus programs, you would still get infected! And it's not only a problem for regular users, but for big companies, too. We can just hope this doesn't get developed by crackers.
  4. I think you are right. Now that they have more users and more people earning a lot of money, they are trying to limit the service so that it accepts only quality web sites. Not to mention how many people are trying to cheat the system. Unfortunately for us (honest users), Google suspects everyone cheats nowadays if he/she has a good revenue. But again, Google is fair, so everything can be worked out. If your account does get deleted, there must be a very good reason for that. As for your site It's quite nice-looking, but I'm sure it would get denied if you applied today So would mine - I would show you what site got me accepted, but it has been in the recycle been for some time now
  5. I see no reason why you would like to delete your account. If you don't like the forum, leave it for a while, but come back later. Who knows, you might like it after all and get hosting here.
  6. I guess he is trying to say that he doesn't feel the site is so important, since it's rarely visited. But I say that's wrong - if your web site isn't popular, make it popular! Don't give up on hosting just because this project isn't good enough. Why not make a new web site?
  7. As far as I know, the person with most credits is microscopic^earthling, the administrator. He has about 900 credits, so he can go for almost three years without posting I'm at 65, and I guess most hosted members, that are here for a while, have between 50 and 150 - that's a decent amount.
  8. Exactly what he said. If you are just entering the world of Linux, do play with some LiveCD distros, as it will help you learn more about Linux and how it works. It might as well be the reason why you decide not to install Linux at all. While it is a good and free operating system, many people don't like it since it's not mainstream. So, stick to the LiveCD for a month, and only then install Linux - if you like it, of course.
  9. That's the thing that suprises me the most. While people complain all the time about their sites being denied, stupid sites such as mine (or your, I guess) get accepted just like that. Not to mention that my site had about 7 pages when I applied, and the title was "Information with absolutely no use". If I were in Google, that would definitely get denied! Would you be so kind to give us the link to your Geocities web site We won't laugh, I promise
  10. Exactly. Even though it might seems easy to get to 100 dollars, it's rather hard to get that money sent to you. Most people that get denied recieve the mail after they acquire 100 dollars. By the way, my site was crappy, too, and I'm suprised it got accepted. But it's important that you improve it all the time, since that's the only way you will earn money and not get banned.
  11. Of course you CAN, but it doesn't mean it's not agains the rules. You are NOT allowed to click on your own and or tell your friends to do so - it doesn't matter if your doing it on your own site or at Xisto. It's just not allowed. If you pack all the files in an archive (I suggest ZIP), you can upload that file to the desired folder and then extract it by using the cPanel file manager. Or so I think you can. If that is not possible, I am sure there is a tool that unpacks an arachive online. I guess you would have to edit the template file. I haven't used that bloggin software, but that's how you do it in WordPress, which I strongly recommend.
  12. You might consider using a web site that provides this service. Not only are they useful and easy to set up, but they also give you detailed information on your visitors. Of course, if (and when) you get hosted here at Xisto, you will have enough information in the cPanel. But until then, I would advise you to use http://statcounter.com/.
  13. I am sorry to hear this. I know how hard it is when you lose someone very close, but it is a pain that must be overcome, sooner or later. I am sure it is hard for you at the moment, so do take a few days of rest - or even weeks if necessary. Don't worry about job or anything else, just relax. We are all with you.
  14. I like the idea, to create animated forum buttons, but this way we come to a serious problem, and that is size. If you look at an ordinary "NEW TOPIC" button, you can see that it weighs about 2 kilobytes. On the other hand, the four bigger buttons you made weigh about 65 kilobytes each. However, if we forget about this major problem, here's something else I don't like. I'm not an expert when it comes to animation, but I am rather sure that this can look better. I don't know if you wanter it to be this way, but the buttons seem a bit grainy, as if not all the colours were used. Of course, I know this would increase the files size even more, but if you are already making it, make it good!
  15. I would just like to add that most of the browsers and download managers can download both from FTP and HTTP servers. That is, of course, if the FTP server is public - no username or password used. I can't guarantee that you can use a browser/download manager for downloading files from "protected" FTP servers. Whereas you might be able to enter them through a browser, I presume you would need a FTP client to download anything.
  16. Most of them say that your download speed will increase. This is nonsense - it might increase for a few bytes, but that's too small to be noticed. Another function that actually proved to be useful is the ability to pause downloads. Sure, Firefox also has this option, but most of the time it hasn't worked for me - and it can be useful when downloading pretty big files.
  17. Glad you liked it. The simplicity was that main idea :DNow I've messed with the colours a bit more, and I need your opinion once again. As you might remember (those of you who have visited before these changes), I have used a green colour for all the links - #8bcc29, to be more specific. However, I didn't like the colour, so decided to switch to a lighter shade of blue. Personally, I think it's better, but what do you say? There is also one more thing I changed, and again want to know what's your opinion. Before the CSS editing, I used to have a #454545 border around all the images - that's the colour all borders are. But only for images, I changed the border colour to the same shade of blue I used for the links. So, should I switch it back to the overall border colour, or leave it like this?~edit~I would also like to add that I've added another tweak to the site. Since the menus were too simple before, I just had to introduce something besides pure text. That's why I've insert a small gray vertical line left of the menu links. It's the thing that turns white when hovered over. What do you think about this? Also I'm thinking of adding a background image to the center column, only it would be located at the bottom in the center. I don't want it to harden the reading and want it to be simple (something like a tribal tattoo). Any ideas what would be good, yet a bit harder to spot?
  18. BitTorrent can't actually be considered a download manager, since it can only be used for downloading torrents - therefore it's a peer-to-peer software. A download manager is something that allows you to download files from servers.Until a year ago, I used to use Star Downloader, as it satisfied me the most. However, some time after switching to Firefox, i realized that no download manager was necessary anymore. They are useful only for bigger files, and I do not download such things. So I use the in-built Firefox download manager.
  19. No thanks, I'd rather not remove the domain name, even it's for 5 days. I already have a fair influx of visitors, and that would leave a bad impression. I guess I'll wait for:1. A few days to see if it gets better2. Someone with more experience
  20. Maybe this can be solved by re-adding the domain name and forcing the global DNS servers to send that data again?
  21. If it is a subdomain, I should be able to add it through cPanel, since it is possible to add subdomains to addon and parked domain names. Of course, that isn't possible - I get this message: "Sorry, www cannot be used in subdomains. However it is implicitly added to all newly created subdomains." According to this, and all the things you said, it should work without problems. Sincerely, I don't care about people not being able to access my web site, it's Google that's worrying me. What do you think, should I wait for a bit more and see whether that solves the problem. As for advanced control at my registar, I probably have something additional at GoDaddy (cpserbia.net), but there is nothing at gold-domain.com (mg-forum.net) or hbdomains.com (the-brits.net).
  22. Yes, that is my real name As for extra settings, there is nothing neither at Gold Domain nor HB Domain (where The Brits domain is registered. What do you mean by this? I can't say that I understood you completely. Anyhow, when I try adding www.the-brits.net as an addon domain, this is what I get: Bugger..
  23. I though that, too, but there seems to be a problem. cPanel won't allow me to add both the-brits.net and http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. Anyway, in the AddOn domains part in cPanel, it says that it is not necessary to input the www prefix! Is that misleading, I ask you?
  24. During the last month, I've added two addon domains to my account. This is the setup: 1. mg-forum.net points to mgforum.cpserbia.net (cpserbia.net is my default domain) 2. the-brits.net points to the-brits.cpserbia.net On my computer, I have no problem accessing both the www and non-www versions of these two domains. However, when I was installing the first one, m^e pointed out that he couldn't access the www version. Since I could, I just ignored the problem, but it seems that it is more serious than I thought. When I try adding a Google Sitemap for The Brits web site, it does get accepted, but reports a HTTP error. I get "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ - Domain name not found". That means that even Google can't access All the entries in the sitemap include the www prefix. Does anyone know why this is happening? By the way, I've seen something similar to this, except it is the other way around. For example, https://www.google.co.yu/ works, whereas google.co.yu doesn't. I guess it's the same thing, since https://www.google.co.yu/ is actually https://www.google.de/?hl=sr&gws_rd=cr,ssl&ei=7xsEVbyYOqKqywPl0YGgCQ. However, neither the www nor the non-www work at the moment, but I guess it's a temporary bug, since I remember the issue very well.
  25. Now that I've examined the service better, I can say it has some major flaws. For example, let's check Google's score. The overall score is 8.8. OK, so Google might not be the best organized web site, but let's see WHY it didn't get over nine points. To start with, i appears to be in violation of the British Disability Discrimination Act. Well, excuse me, but it seems all web site are in violation of this law! Of course, with the exception of the SiteScore site itself. But this IS Google! Of course there's nothing on the home page - that's why Google is so good - they don't have numerous ads everywhere. Another bad point is a table-based layout. Sure, web sites are better when done with the help of CSS, but there isn't much at Google that needs CSS. This search engine is supposed to be simple. After all, some people might still use browser that don't support CSS. On the other hand, let's check Yahoo!'s score. It also got 8.8, and the reasons why it isn't here are approximately the same as for Google. But I think Google would have to have a higher score than Yahoo!, don't you agree? What's more, the SiteScore tools says that Yahoo! is more popular than Google, because somehow they "calculated" that Yahoo! is the best site on the web, with Google at the third spot. I say, this tool is good for web sites with a specific subject which includes content, while not good for search engines. But for us hosted at Xisto, it should do the trick and tell us what to improve.
