Is it OK to say that until MS has read over the law books a million times and has sued every company they can, that would be the end of them?Although this is definitely not where most of their income is generated from, in fact it's the smallest percent, most of it is OEM software and corporate companies, not to mention the home users. Although still this is still marginal, they've now hit the gaming industry with releasing their console into the market. As long as they can continue marketing and bagging others and monopolising, they will contine for quite some time. How many quotes have come through MS that have just lied through their teeth, MS is good for lying and stealing, it's how their company came to be. Digital Research, IBM and Apple must have kicked themselves hard when it happened and I'm sure they don't like dealing with MS that much either but due to popularity and market hold they really have no choice.MS have to start reading the rule books and try sabotaging. Eventually some bright spark will show MS up and it may not even be Linux involved, I'm hoping.Cheers, MC

VBScript vs JScript vbscript...is it ever used?
iGuest replied to OrbitPoints's topic in Programming
Both VBScript and JScript are Microsoft scripting languages, you should use JavaScript instead, JScript was MS's attempt to push JavaScript out of the scene as competition but it didn't do so well. VBScript, well, stay clear of it, this is also a script used by virus writers and is not only effective on the web. .ASP is based on VBScripting, so it's quite similar in syntax. You may not see VBScripts as it's only supported by IE, I'm not sure of any other browsers who went onboard for this scripting language. So you should consider it abandoned, obsolete... Cheers, MC -
Lets answer what you want, as I myself started off with MS Access for online databases because learning MySQL wouldn't have got my site online quicker, but now it's been converted over to MySQL. Hopefully you run your own web server, else web hosts would have alternative methods you can use. I wrote a tutorial on Installing your own web server for Windows in the HOWTOS AND TUTORIAL page. You will only have to do the Apache and PHP steps for what you need. We have to configure our PHP Scripts to use what is known as ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity), You will also have to make sure that you have MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) installed, anything above Windows 2000 should have it installed. This setup refers to Windows XP Pro, since it's my Windows Operating System I run and is the only way I can explain it as it's been too long since I went back to a prior OS, although put me in front of one and I can do the same thing. You need to goto Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Data Sources (ODBC), then select the System DNS tab at the top and then click on Add. We need to add Microsoft Access Driver *.mdb and click Finish. Data Source Name is what is like our Database name, we use it in our connectivity. I called it MyDB. Next you have select your database file that you will be using with this connection. Click select and browse to your database on your computer, then click OK. You then click on the Advance tab and setup a username and password to connect to this database. For this I'll use root as username and passwordd as the password. Next I create a PHP script called dbcon.php, it's our database connection script, I include this file whenenver I need to connect to the database. <?php $dbcon = odbc_connect('MyDB', 'root', 'password') or die("Error: Connection to Database Failed"); ?> And that's how we connect to the database, odbc_connect(); may look familiar, if you have seen mysql_connect(); then that is why. The commands are pretty much the same, yet you've got more control with mysql than MS Access. You should get the PHP Manual it will definitely help you out with other commands like odbc_exec(); etc. The commands are pretty much the same as MySQL so learning how to connect to MS Access database isn't a waste of time, you can convert over to MySQL easier this way. There's also software out there that can convert MS Access to MySQL and vice versa, so if you want to switch it's quite easy. Well if you require any more assistance, don't hesitate to ask. Cheers, MC

OS Talk Which OS do you think is the best?
iGuest replied to almoo7's topic in Websites and Web Designing
The best OS of my choice is Windows. The main reason is wide compatibility of Windows to many softwares and hardwares. Another thing is it is cheaper than a Macintosh. That is why Windows is intended for most home users. The disadvantage however is security and crashes.I also use Macintosh, and what I can say is it is by far the most secure OS in the market. The downside is, it is more expensive because the computer comes directly from Apple. Also, you won't get wide variety of softwares for it especially games. Macintosh is made especially for photo and video editors.Linux on the other side is one of the most fastest, secure, and hardest OS to learn. Linux is still on it's early stage. Maybe in the future, it might and it might replace Windows. Who knows. -
Problem with IE - Help please... Help please...
iGuest replied to kokushta's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Hey kokushta, The problem could be DNS, but if it's working through Netscape then obviously it's not the problem, So could it be the page that you're trying to view playing up? But I assume you used Netscape to get there no problems. So obviously the problem lies within IE somewhere, check the URL is correct. Check to make sure that you're not trying to browse Offline, make sure your internet connection is running at the time and that your Internet Connection is being used, if you connect via LAN then make sure Automatic Detection is set in the LAN configuration and manual configuration is off, set IE's defaults back and site restrictions back. If you use a program like SpyBot Search and Destroy which can sometimes render IE to do nothing because of the security fixes it does, you may have to revert the changes back. If you're running a firewall make sure it's configured correctly, disable it and then try IE, if it works it has to be a firewall configuration so make sure IE has correct permissions. If you're not running the latest version of IE, update to it. If you are, try doing a repair on IE or reinstalling. But in saying this, I would say drop IE and use something like Mozilla, IE can cause major hassles and I no longer install IE but Mozilla on people's machines due to the number of calls I get when IE starts playing up (Homepage Hijacking, Malware, Exploits, etc). The only thing you need IE for is for updating Windows. Cheers, MC -
Na just edit config.php with suitable variables which match the correct database you hav created. Then just go to the directory where you uploaded php-nuke and create your god user.Thats it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Enjoy a much more secure and enhanced php-nuke!!

Thanks for pointing that out... I thought I had mispelled that word. But I wasn't 100% sure of it. But I just went to fix it and found out that I had saved the wrong image and now I don't have the psd file to edit it...Grrr. I'll just have to recreate it...lol Later, J. (TS)

For the phpbb affiliate button. I have one on in my forum at [Links] just make sure to save it to your hard drive. I have the hot linking protection active on my account so that no one will steal my bandwidth. Later, J. (TS)

This site was write in portuguese, not spanish.

Well, I'm not quite sure about all the names you could use. But whenever you get them all down, I have the images when you need them. If you have Photoshop CS, I can also send you the psd file so you can edit the images the way you like. An idea for a few titles in the higher ranks are "Post Addict, Post Junkie." Just a thought... I use the GIMP 2.0.4 for Linux, Photoshop 7 for Windows. Comparison, well they both do exactly what I need and I can't really compare them other than they both have different ways for doing one thing than another, Photoshop maybe easier to navigate, due to spending more time around Windows than Linux but in the end, they both do what I want and I can't complain. Photoshop 7 takes a lot longer time to load on Windows though. I had to learn GIMP, which I didn't mind, considering that I've dedicated most my work on Linux now. They are both powerful graphic programs and if I had to choose one over the other, I would have to say GIMP as cost wise should be considered in this, as they both perform the same things, or can perform the same. A simple graphic alteration should not take forever to load in my opinion and Photoshop uses quite a lot of resources. SYSTEM SPECS of both machines (used only for animation/graphics) Dual PIII 1GHz 2GB SDRAM PC133 GeForce FX6800 GT AGP 8x 256MB GDDR 200GB ATA133 HDD 8MB Cache Cheers, MC

SSL means Secure Sockets Layer which is a protocol used over the internet for securing transactions made between client to server. It basically acts like a tunnel between the server and you. It doesn't allow others into the same tunnel, that way you are directly connected to them. The data that is transmitted through that tunnel is encrypted and scrambled so that when the data reaches the destination, the receiver will know how to unencrypt it and piece it back together. Web content management Software or web-based programs..
iGuest replied to kokushta's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You seem clear enough, good idea using the picture. Well, are you willing to learn howto do this? Or would you consider the easy packages that have been said? Well if you want to learn this, then I'll explain the basics. You have your site setup how you want it. This will be called index.php <html> <head> <title>Title</title> </head> <body> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td>This is the first row first column</td> </tr> <tr> <td>This is the second row first column</td> </tr> <tr> <td>This is the third row first column</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </body> </html> I seperated each part by a row just for simplicity sakes. Now the part I want to alter is the <td> tags. I create a text file that contains what information I want. call it first_text.txt: <td>This content has been added dynamically in the second row first column.</td> Now back to the code <html> <head> <title>Title</title> </head> <body> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td>This is the first row first column</td> </tr> <tr> <?php include 'first_text.txt' ?> </tr> <tr> <td>This is the third row first column</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </body> </html> And when the PHP interpreter reads that, it'll look for first_text.txt in it's included directories on the server and include that text inside that file at that location. So the idea behind this is, if you have a template, seperate the content you want from the site and make adjustments to those files and then upload them, this is similar to how web based content managers work except they do it remotely. Also, make sure you check whether the file exists as well as telling the people viewing it a more friendlier error and maybe automatically notifying your webmaster about the problem. Otherwise you can use those packages if they seem easier. Cheers, MC -
Well, I don't mind google ads, they aren't intrusive, but every now and again, popups/popunders and flashy siezure type ads really get on my nerves and I had been using adblock on mozilla and thought it'd be worth sharing to other users, who too use mozilla. There's also some more good development addons for mozilla, but for now I will tell you how to get adblock and install it for Mozilla (only tested on Linux like operating system). Go to: http://adblock.mozdev.org/ in Mozilla | Click on the link Install at the top | Click on Dev. Build | Scroll down a bit and click on Adblock 0.5 d2 nightly 39 and from there Mozilla will ask you if you want to install, say yes, enable it, close mozilla and reopen it and now you should have adblock. If ads bypass the block, just right- <- snipped -> and click Adblock ? where ? could be image, iframe, etc, you can also use wild cards (*) so if you know more ads would exists from there, just delete what would stay common and then ad a wildcard and you'll no longer be bothered by them again. Cheers, MC}

This has been answered and is explained. When you request your starter, you are required to post an additional 50 more good posts to upgrade to the standard package, it's what you sacrifice when you request the starter package with only 10 good posts. Cheers, MC

Uploading the files via the Internet
iGuest replied to chronogamer28's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Your root directory for your html pages exist at public_html or www (it's just a shortcut to public_html) inside public_html, if you have index.html (use .html for files, .htm was only for Operating Systems that only supported 8.3 filename extensions) I'm not sure how the httpd.conf files are configured but if .htm doesn't work try .html, you can also change this using .htaccess files. You don't have to use web based clients for uploading, you can use ftp too, just make sure the directory you're in is public_html for pages you want to show on your site. Do not have spaces in your filenames, as it's much easier this way, else if you're linking to a file you would do <img src="./image/This%20Image.png" alt="This Image">, this means that you have a image directory inside your public_html folder which holds your image named "This Image.png" space included. I do believe files are case sensitive too, although it might not be the case. so ThisImage is different to thisIMAGE or THISimage or ThIsImAgE. I will have to check on that, but it's always a good idea to use lowercase for everything if possible. If you're using the <base> tag, then <base href="http://yousite.com/rg-erdr.php?_rpo=t; so when you're addressing files you would now do <img src="/image/ThisImage.png" alt="This Image"> You do use www or public_html for your files to go in, just make sure index.html is your homepage. Cheers, MC -
Oh yeh that would be great genocide. Could you please create or find me a good disclaimer for no-cd fix downloads and post it here. |Thanx alot

Hey wassie, If you're still looking for the "pips" (is that what they are) I took the image you showed above and split it up, changed the colour and if you still want to use them. I have an assortment of different colours for them.. Just PM and I'll gladly send you the link to get them... Later, J. (TS)

Then install it to a folder you have not already created, as it says in the instructions fot the install of php-nuke. You may just need to try again as it cud of just been a server problem. By the way, I suggest that you go to Nuke code and download the chatserved patched 2.5 phpnuke 7.4. Beacuse it has the latest security patches and addons. IT IS WAY MORE SECURE THEN PHPNUKE 6.8 IN THE CPANEL SCRIPTS.

No these filies use hardly any band width as they are between 50-4000kb If i come across fixes larger then this i will put them on another host, to save you guys bandwidth.I am aware my bandwidth is fixed and will just close down my download section if I find the downloads are being over used (after monitoring my bandwidth via cpanel).I will put a disclaimer infront of each download as admin said no matter where the file is actually hosted. If you are wondering why i wanna host these files on Xisto, its beacuse the other servers i use dont have hotlinking as Xisto does. So i wud rather use Xisto but am prepared to use another file host.Thankx admins!! You cud probably close this now.

I pretty much taught myself everything I know through trial and error. I also love to look at source codes for other sites and see what new scripting methods I can find in them. I've never really been able to follow a tutorial very well. It's just way to tedious for me... I learn more with hands-on experiance than I do reading about something. As for good referance sites. I think the best, as of yet, would have to be w3 School. Later, J. (TS)
