New Pope: A Nazi! News sources poping up WORLD WIDE
Wyllt replied to Darker333's topic in General Discussion
If he were a actual Nazi with the beliefs that go with that name, then there would indeed be reason to worry. Would you like to find out that the president of the US believed in white supremacy, and that all non arians should be put in concentration camps. Granted the Pope may not have as much political power as the US Pres, but the office still has alot of power, and I can understand people wanting to ensure that the right person for the job is in the position. Can't you? -
You can get The Complete Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe which includes all five books. (Watch it if your buying used though because older versions will only have the older books). From what I understand some versions of the complete come with Salmon of a doubt and Young Zaphod as well, though I have never seen that before.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe series is absolutely brilliant. I am re-reading the first four books now for at least the tenth time. I love the books and can't wait for the series. I will have to make a trip to the library to try and get the fifth book (Mostly Harmless) though since my copy vanished some years ago. I haven't had the chance to read Samon of a Doubt though, I will have to get that out too.Love the Gently series, Long Dark Tea Time of The Soul is one of Adams' best books. Have never come accross Young Zaphod Plays it safe, I will have to look for that one too.Another one for Adams fans is Douglas Adams' Starship Titantic. It was actually written by Monty Python's Terry Jones based on an idea that Douglas Adams developed into a video game and got Jones to write. Douglas Adams was alway a fan of multi media, and writing was only a side gig in comparison. Starship Titantic is great, a must read for all Adams and Monty Python fans (generally they are one and the same, though some Python fans haven't heard of Douglas Adams so have yet to convert to Douglas Adams fans ).

Microsoft Certifications Are the worth the money?

I must slap myself, your post is COMPLETELY RELEVANT to the comment about it not being considered college education. Some how I missed that comment, although I know I read it, for some reason it didn't sink in, I suppose because I didn't realize anyone actually considered it College education. -

Ok, the guy was part of the Hitler youth when membership was COMPULSORY, has the world forgotten what this word means? For those of you who don't know: com?pul?so?ry ( P ) Pronunciation Key (km-pls-r) adj. Obligatory; required: a compulsory examination. Employing or exerting compulsion; coercive. He was forced into it essentially, sure he could have resisted, gone to jail or worse, but can you honestly blame him? If so then be prepared to judge an entire generation of most of Germany, and a whole slew of other European nations near by as well. Personally I more dislike his conservative views then his involvment in an organization he had no choice but to join, but then again I am not a catholic. -

I don't think anyone claimed that these certs make you a engineer in the manner your talking about, it is about the usefulness of those certs. There are alot of non-engineer jobs that pay 50-55K, even for fresh grads, granted engineers are the higher paying bracket, none of this is really relevent to the topic. Ya it sucks, but the job market for IT Techs did have a massive downturn thanks mainly to a flooding of ppl with these certs. As for the requirments of MCSE under 20 AND 4 years experience, god I hope your kidding, that's nuts. How do they expect a 20yr old to have 4 yrs experience AND any useful education? -
Microsoft Certifications Are the worth the money?
Wyllt replied to zippy77's topic in Business Forum
Ah, the age old question, to certify or not to certify. Back in the "good old days" an MCSE meant something, now though it is only another peice of paper which may or may not be of use in getting a job. The problem is that there are just too many MCSE's out thier that have the piece of paper, but no practical experience, they read the books, and studied hard, but didn't bother to do any actual hands on stuff to practice, so thier knowledge is limited. Unfortunately because Micro$oft advertised thier certs so much they became the oh so important piece of paper to hold for techies, this is a problem because it ment that the market was flooded with MCSE's and the test was relatively easy if you studied, especially with all the MCSE test prep sites out thier, so this ment that the value of the cert dropped rapidly. As for the MCSE meaning an instant raise, that is just pure nonsense, only in a very few select shops is this the case, and those jobs are fairly low paying to begin with so with the raise you would be making the average salary of a tech, not 50-100K, there is no such thing as a 50-100K Tech job, you have to get into IT Management to get those figures, but to get into IT Management you usually need business background and/or time in the trenches as a frontline tech. While getting a raise for having your MCSE is not realistic, having your employer pay for the cert is realisitic, one thing most tech jobs have going for them is that the employers want the tech employees to keep current so generally they will pay for education. The certification industry will die down I think, with the sad fact that there are so many of these documents available, and the declining value of said documents, fewer and fewer techs will bother with them, so fewer and fewer companies will devise new certs. What I would like to see instead is M$ come up with a more intensive cert which requires time in the trenches, like an apprenticeship. This will guarantee that the ppl graduating with the cert have real life experience and not just book knowlege, because trust me on this, what M$ press says is the way to do things is not the way 99.9999999999% of the real world does them, and you learn more in the first year of a tech job then you would ever learn in a classroom. As for having an MCSE in order to grab a job, there is no doubt that an MCSE will HELP you find a tech job, but this does not mean that you need one to get a job. I had the training necessary to take my MCSE back in 1995, and I was about to take the first of the exams when I landed my first real tech job, I didn't bother taking the exam, because my employer wasn't going to pay me more if I completed the exams. I kept saying that when I went looking for a new job I would take the exams, but I never bothered because I kept landing new and higher paying jobs. I do know several MCSE's, and none of them had any trouble finding jobs, and indeed two have found jobs easier than me (though one is in a city with WAY more IT jobs then the city I live in so I don't think she really counts) the others have had just as much trouble getting jobs as I have. The only problem is that several jobs I have seen that I wanted to get said MCSE was a requirement, however I still apply and guess what, I got one of the jobs that MCSE was a requirement dispite not having the cert. Job requirements are always flexible, if they can't get what they want they may end up bending the requirments to fit thier needs, mind you I have 7 years experience as a Network Admin/Tech Support person in Microsoft environments so I imagine that when I got the MCSE required jobs they figured I had enough experience to consider it an equivelent. The only cert I think is still well worth the money is the CCNE (CISCO Certified Network Engineer), it is a seriously tough course, and it would be tough to pass without actually configuring a router or two. CNE (Certified Novell Engineer) was once a GREAT cert to have, however Novell is all but dead so the usefulness is quickly fading, and I would say that even if Novell is still offering it (which I am not sure of) it wouldn't really be worthwhile unless you had a job using novell and they offered a raise if you passed the course. -
First of all, I HAVE to say that ALL name brands suck (for home PC's) for one reason or another. Compaq's are/were the WORST company to ever make PC's, between the crap hardware they jerry-rigged together and the non-existant support. Ironically HP is probably the only name brand I could support, dispite the fact that they absorbed Compaq and took to using some of thier "support" methods. Dell's Tech support is the best by far, but the quality of their hardware leaves much to be desired. IBM is a joke for PC's, I don't know why they even bother anymore. Dell Laptops are ultra-cool, and I would recommend going name brand for laptops, so I would probably recommend either Dell or HP for laptops. Emachines I know next to nothing about, I have not worked on one YET, however given the low price and availablilty, I expect to see some used ones float through the school system here next year or the year after.I have delt with thousands of Compaq's because in my last couple of jobs my employers have loved compaq's for some rediculous reason, I think they are all junk. The hardware inside any given model is random and appears to be the cheapest available. Ie. I once recieved 20 Compaq Deskpro EN SFF's with the exact same model number at a school I work for, of those 20 machines I have 5 different video cards, and 3 different network cards, of those 20 machines 5 were non functioning right out of the box, and 15 monitors died within one week of reciept. This type of senario is far from unique with compaqs in my experience.

Talk About The Current Logo which painting are you familiar with
Wyllt replied to hulunes's topic in Search Engines
They are all daVinci. Leonardo da Vinci was born on this day in 1452. Thus the new Google art . You know the Mona Lisa of course, on the first o though is the Vitruvian Man, arguably the most anotomically correct drawing of man for its time. The wings are a sketch he did for his famous flying machine, which by the way would have worked. -
it can sometimes take up to 72 hours for dns changes to propegate through the internet. You say yesterday it went to Xisto, but today it doesn't? Are you using the same pc? If you are then it could be that your ISP had some problems with thier DNS server and your using a secondary DNS server. If your not using the same computer perhaps where you are now is not using the same DNS server as where you were yesterday?

Content Management System - Cms What do you use/ is the best?
Wyllt replied to JeffS's topic in Websites and Web Designing
sure you can edit the template in PHP-nuke, it actually isn't that difficult, and there is even a primer on how to do this somewhere on one of the community sites, I think maybe nukecops but I can't be sure. It isn't a sinch, unless you just want to throw your logo in etc, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist either. PHP-Nuke is pretty good, I used to use it, but I got hacked so many times I don't think I'll go with it this time, I am thinking Mambo right now, but I haven't decided. -
I have used PHP-Nuke before and liked it but it got hacked easily even with all the security patches. Testing Post-Nuke out, not sure if I like it yet. Which do you think is best and why?

Airports Begin Ban On Cigarette Lighters... This is crazy
Wyllt replied to JaVe's topic in General Discussion
Well, you can carry guns on checked bagage as long as they are declared and properly packed. You cannot have lighters in your checked bagage and haven't been able to for 30 years (according to the article you linked to). The issue is not gun vs. lighter, it is what is allowed in the carry on luggage, and after 9/11 of course they are going to get really tight and restrict anything that can be used as a weapon of any kind. I don't know if you recall, but a couple of years ago someone boarded a plane with a bomb on his feet, a "shoe bomb" with a lighter such a bomb could easily be lit. By resticting access to lighters you are limiting what such a nut job can do. Sure he could bring matches, (which should be stopped if your going to restrict lighters in my opinion) but there is a greater chance of being noticed trying to light a match than a lighter. Now as to having guns in the cargo hold, well exactly how do you expect someone to get into the cargo hold, locate thier bag and extract the weapon and amunition without being noticed? So having a gun in the cargo hold is not at all on par in any way as having a lighter in your carry on, and in fact the lighter represents the greater immediate threat.Don't get me wrong I think guns should also be banned from air travel, but that is more my anit-gun beliefs than any safety issue that can be logically argued. -
How come you didn't list Canada as an option? You know Canada is large enough I think (both in physical size and population) to be considered a country of some note.

Well it seems to be that I can get in every now and then. I was just in fine, but now it is crawling again. snlildude87: I am using IE. Still having problems. Cpanel itself is working, it seems to be just when I try to go into fantastico.
-
Is there a problem with fantastico right now. I seem completely unable to access it. A few minutes ago I got in but nothing would load once I was in, but now I am not even able to get it at all.

Voip(voice Over Internet Protocol) real money saver
Wyllt replied to Dodger's topic in Science and Technology
Voip has its benifits, that is for sure, but also there is a need for a minimum bandwidth, and while for home use it is great, for business you had better be ready to fork over for some dedicated bandwidth for it. -
Well see I said that the education systems were messed up, but it is NOT the fault of the teachers. I am not arguing, or fussing we are having a difference of opinion and debating our points. Debating is not the same as arguing. I am clarifying my position. As for how Pennsylvania does the funding, you really believe this is a good method? So the schools that have the worst students get the least funding, and it only gets worse? And the schools with the best students get the most funding and it only gets better? There is some serious flaws with this reasoning. Now on to your comment about teachers not excelling because of benifits, now that is crazy. I primarily focused on the statement that they don't have funding for proper teaching materials to keep the education up to date. I think that when you enter the education system you will see it from a different point of view.

Will You Upgrade To Windowslongorn When It Comes Out?
Wyllt replied to John13's topic in Science and Technology
No I won't upgrade to longhorn, but in M$'s defense it is primarily due to the fact that my home PC won't even run XP let alone longhorn LOL. -
Sony's Patent On Apparent "matrix-like Technology"
Wyllt replied to dexter's topic in Science and Technology
Really, how many studies have you run on this yet to be developed technology, or how many studies have you read about that have been conducted on the technology that exists only in the imagination of some ultrageeks at Sony?. Of course there is the possibility of it causing brain damage instead of allowing for an immersive media experience, however there can be no way that anyone would know this without running tests, and that can't happen until they have a way of making an actual device. Well I'll agree with you that it is ludicous to think they won't put in adverts, however, I think it is a little bit alarmist to assume it would have adverse affects, unless you believe that TV commercials are dangerous. -
That's a tough one, hate to be dull, but I would probably live in the present, or perhaps a little earlier. I would have loved to be around during the early days of computers, unfortunately I was a little to young for it and missed the boom by only a few years, then again I was young enough to ride out the crash as well. Technology is moving so fast it is hard to believe, it rivals the industrial revolution. Of course I would have to specify that I would have to live near berkley so that I didn't miss it just because I was stuck in some backwards town in the middle of nowhere where no one has even heard of computers

Yahoo Is Better Than Google!?!? What is up with that?
Wyllt replied to hansley's topic in Search Engines
Sorry Izlude, but your logic is flawed. First of all in any free email system the common usernames get used up quickly, so it is natural that it would be tough to pick a username in Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, or any other popular system. Next, yahoo and google are both searching the same internet, so it is natural that many of the links found in one search engine would be found in another, the results are not the same, doubt me? Type "just a test of search engines" in both yahoo and google, the results ARE different. Finally Google NEVER owned Yahoo. Yahoo predates google by a number of years. Yahoo directory opened in 1994 or 1995 (can't reacall exactly when), Google on the otherhand doesn't show up on raidar until 1998. The closest you could say either one has been to owning each other is that David Filo (co-founder of Yahoo!) encouraged Sergey Brin and Larry Page (creators of google) to create the search engine. Although Yahoo was using google as it primary search engine provider (remember Yahoo is NOT a search engine by default, but rather a directory service and the search service for sites not listed in the directory is outsourced). Even taking this into effect Yahoo still has sites in its directory listed in priority, wich throws the results off quite a bit.The comparison between yahoo and google should be on feature set not on irrelevent data such as username availability (which is probably still much better on Gmail since it still is, in theory, still in beta and only available by invite) or by the irrelevent fact that the same sites show up on both search engines. -
