Should be compatable, but buy from a company that sells computers and parts, the smaller shops wont sell you XP, where as bigger computer superstores will. The little guys will get you a better deal.

I wouldnt go copy and pasting phpBB code into SMF files, might cause a bit of a problem. There is a phpBB theme and a Hotmail one, there both easy to use.

Yeah, SMF has a completely different secuirty structure including the fact that all the logic is parsed seperate from the themes, so you cant use any theme files to infect the logic, changing cookie code is impossible, and SMF has a kick *bottom* dev team headed by [unknown] who is like the ultimate dev, hes been here a few times also.*hides

Just to make a point also, hosted sites are on "Panda" so its a different server, altogether I believe.

I was just reading on slashdot, Adobe bought Macromedia to stop Microsoft from doing so, now that would have been a disaster. Im not a fan of Adobe, Reader sucks, takes far too long to load and has a dodgey Firefox plugin, Macromedia on the other hand seem to do things well, SWF is an ingenious file type, small but got the quality, they may yet make a good team.

I am struggling to see why he said that but I can see some logic, SMF has a security mentality, its built on a MUCH more secure basis than phpBB is, hacking it is VERY diificult and hasnt been done at all in SMFs existance. SMF can handle small forums or huge ones, it takes my site, t101.uni.cc, it manages http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/ and ofcoures takes simplemachines.org, its free and can be used anywhere, currently over or very close to 100 themes all free and more than 100 mods. Feature requests for next "Enchancement" of SMF are being taken. Ill give a word on the advances so people dont get confused. Its not a re-write but more of a feature expander, it almost doubles SMFs current features with a lot that people want/need, the SMF 1.0.X series are the first stable public releases, and the upgrades are just bug/typo fixes, SMF 1.1 which has been being made from about January is an expansion on the current code, it has new features that are added to the current SMF install, its the same code, with new added, most mods will still work, although some code dependent ones will change but mod authors will update pretty quick. It will be a quick upgrade as usual, probably taking a little longer than previous ones and I believe the Package Manager will still perform your upgrade for you so you dont need to remove your mods. Call it "getting" better, If SMF 2 was in dev (Which it isnt even thought about) that would be a code re-write. So when 1.1 arrives it will have new features, and 1.1.1 will be bug/typo fixes same for all the 1.1.X series. Then if SMF 1.2 comes along, it will have new features. And SMF 1.2.X will be bug fixes and so on. SMF 1.1 is due soon, in a few months maybe once it matures and then will be released and by that time, I doubt anyone will have a reason not to upgarde.

There isnt a way back as of yet, there hasnt been a way for over a year, the phpBB developers dont seem to care. So moving bac as in converting isnt going to happen.SMF is very easy to learn and a lot more logical than phpBB, what the best idea is, is maybe to switch for a week and if its truly horrible, just use the phpBB database and you will have only lost a weeks worth of posts, maybe harsh but I cant see any real reasons that a switch back would be needed, and you have me, and some others as youll see below to help you if its needed. Waiting is up to you, but the move will still be as easy as ever.

Oh kick note, if your getting, "Index" only, please re-upload your Themes directory with a better FTP client, its left some files intead of uploading them all. That should also upload languages where the problems arise a lot.

That can happen if the Xisto MySQL is being used heavily, it generally doesnt but if someone runs a rogue script or tests something non-too-friendly it can have those affects, it should clear up pretty fast.

A few things I'd like to point out before anyone seriously considers phpBB Yeah, that claim still standing? Yeah most big BBS have that. With there "security". I mean someone got hacked about 6 hours before a fix and was responded with "You should have upgraded". That is a terrible thing to do. Also anyone reports my forumg ot hacked im running the latest version they get "I highly doubt that". phpBB arent the "community builders", their past their prime now im sorry to say. Youll see a good few alternatives here also, one of the best IMO being free (SMF) Hope ive helped someone.

SMF definately has this, there are two good ways to do it, one is to upload the files as an attchment and install the download center mod which will be on the SMF soon or is but a little hidden, but to download itm, the authors own page has it http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ A better way if you depend on downloads a lot more, is to get "Coppermine" the Photo Gallery software, you can with that use it for a complete downloads system for any file types, you dont even need the photo bit, its pretty cool and very easy to integrate the two, literally one line of code you copy and paste and then you are done its so simple. I believe the auto-install package is even done. phpBB dont do feature requests for 2.0.X updates and 3 is still quite a bit off. So SMF can do it just aswell if not better than IPB is.

Try putting in your cPanel password and that may be able to get into the database, when you moved it you broke the access stuff. Also once you get in you could switch to SMF, I could help a lot more with that. And many people in the boards below seem to like it much better than IPB

Im upset over an advert, yesterday there was a "Crazy Frog 2.0 Remix" from jamster, I hated the original but this was cool, and now its gone but I clicked it. Some rotators are helpful to me. Some provide links to sites I didnt know existed. Others are junk.

I must also back up others here, I have always used ATi at home and its never let me down. nVidia look okay but ive seen some pretty amazing things on ATi's. And i myself have a Radeon X300.

They only give it for free as otherwise they face a huge lawsuit. It was an argument over how Dial Up users couldnt get the updates and they had to get them as per some agreement and it had to be fast, so microsoft have to send them or they loose money from a court-case.
