  1. I know what you mean about tag a longsI hate it when you are going somewhere and someone just wont let you go alone, they are determined to follow you wherever you go!like when we went to france, some of the other people from our school on the tour kept trying to go with us, and we basically had to dump them with people from their same grade to give us some peace (us as in my friends and I) so we could decide where we want to go at a certain venue without having someone else hanging on saying 'NOOOO I DONT WANNA GO THERE!' or 'WHY CANT WE GO THERRE???? I WANT AN ICECREAM!!!!!'.Really annoying!A200

  2. I dunno about UnionsThey are good for collective bargaining- aka the union and a whole heap of angry employees demand better conditions from the employer. and also for those who do not know the system at all, the unions can help you and advise you on if you are getting a good deal etc. at negotiations.but what I HATE HATE HATE is when they go beyond assisting the worker and go to the point where they are there to further their own political motives and try to control everything and call useless strikes to stuff up the country.yes I think unions are good at times, and industrial action is good when things are really bad and the employer is not giving in, but please, union thugs and heavies can be so intimidating and annoying at times.also I have found that once you join a union, they dont let you leave and then decide to charge you astronomical fees for all the help they gave you???A200

  3. I can write a whole essay on what I hate.I hate spiders.Who the hell devised such a horrid animal? They are relentless and scare me to death. Why wont they leave me alone? WHY?I go into the shower, pull the shower curtain behind me, turn on the water, start putting shampoo in my hair and then turn around and there is a massive hairy hunstman spider on the shower curtain!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I screamed so loud it made my dog bark and go crazy. They scare me to death, I hate them, they freak me out.I cant even look at pictures of them! I was reading an information atlas at school the other day and I was reading an area on south america and I turned the page and there was a massive image of a tarantula! WTF! I dont wanna be reading my atlas and see creepy spiders! I hate the stupid publisher for putting such a vile image into my atlas!I hate it even more when idiots like to play on my fear and put fake spiders on my bed, in my locker etc. or send me an email titled 'Hey look at this', I load the email and they sent me images of spiders, big and small, all shapes and sizes. I almost fell out of my seat! I almost died! I just closed the browser and started getting all frantic that a spider is on me... I really hate them!^_^:D:lol:^_^:D:angry:   GOD SAVE me if I ever go to south america where there are heaps of massive arachnids everywhere! They freak me out. I get scared. I cannot explain my irrational fear of spiders. I am not scared of some other common fears (snakes, clowns etc.) but spiders scare me.Is it because they are ugly? have massive legs? i do not know? maybe it is the way they run, or everything is in terms of 8?i find it interesting that I am not scared of daddy long legs (which technically aren't spiders) which are extremely poisonous, but they dont scare me at all.is it the hair? is it the big legs? why? WHY DO THEY SCARE ME SOOO MUCH???How can I get a cure? anyone?I could go on for hours on other hates of mine, but i'll end it here :P

  4. It seems the dominos are starting to fall- WA is no longer controlled by the ALP and they were considered a safe government! In 2009 I can assure you QLD's ALP will loose out to the LNP, who, to be honest, don't seem to be any better. But QLD just seems to be sick of Labors *BLEEP* and want someone new in.As for the other states... well NSW will probably fall in their elections in 2010/2011 I think, as they are ALP and the Rees government is failing abysmally (Iemma was no better).Interesting times ahead.

  5. HelloI have signed up for the MyCent new system, and I was wondering if my negative balance here is transferred? When I signed up, I was like 23 credits in the red! I made a good post and that dropped to 13 or so, and today, checking Xisto - Web Hosting, my negative credits have not been moved over :) so am I therefore on a new, fresh slate, or has the whole thing not worked (aka my forum account not linked to the Xisto - Web Hosting one?). I notice my balance is 700 mycents, is that from the big post I made or is that what they give everyone for switching over...?If you could answer my Q's, that would be greatly appreciated :PA200

  6. I think doctors are alright. When I had to go to the doctors when both my legs started swelling up, the first guy we went to did a few tests, checked my temperature, checked my ears and chest etc. for infection and apparently it was 'clear'. He just said to take this medicine and go home. So we went to the Pharmacy, bought the medicine and I took 2 of the tablets each day.It actually got worse. The next day my coughing got really bad to the point where I was vomiting, I had massive stomach cramps that made it really hard to go outside and I started getting a temperature. The swelling on my legs grew to my ankle and foot and intensified. So my mum booked a visit to the same doctors surgery, but made sure we visited a different doctor there just for good measure. Because I had been wearing long pants that day, once we got there we were shocked at how far it had spread, (from my foot, which was swollen, all the way up to my lower leg). She immediately took action and did a temperature check, and all the other tests, and said it was really bad and I need a blood test and an ultrascan on my leg. (this was about 5PM in the afternoon). We went to the closest blood centre (luckily just around the corner) and I had my blood test (first time I had ever had one) and then at 7PM we had my ultrasound check. We then went home and I started using the new prescription my doctor gave me.Was that it? No.Later that night I got a call from the doctor saying she had recieved the blood test results, and that I had an unusually high amount of white blood cells in my body- she recommended I go to the local emergency department ASAP! When my dad told me, I was really scared... going to a hospital!! Lets put the end of this very briefly-I went to the hospital, they wrote me down and said to wait in the waiting room- 2 hours later (10PM) someone came, then they checked my legs and got all the details and put me in another room while they put a drip into my left hand, and I was in that room for 5 hours as they needed a specialist doctor to see me and he was really busy. By 5AM the next day, they put my into a proper public ward and I had a brief sleep before the sun came up, and I spent the morning in the ward, having a tube in my left hand for the medicine being pumped in. They finally got a room in the private ward available, so in the afternoon I moved to the level above and it was heaven, so much better than the public ward where you share a room with like 4 other people, its especially bad if one of those people is constantly talking in a really annoying voice, making you feel very very on edge and wanting to get a knife and stab someone.I spent another night in hospital (in the private ward) and the next day I had my last course of medicine before they decided I was fit to go home (as my legs had swollen down considerably and I was feeling better) and they gave us a final prescription, and we went and got it and I took those tablets. (They were extremely small, which is good for swallowing. I needed to take 2 tablets, 3 times a day, for the next 4 days). Once the tablets were finished up, it said on the box as my prescription that I don't need any more. The swelling on my legs disappeared and all was well :)A200

I love MM3 on XBOX, it is awesome. Such a shame they never made it for PC. If they did, I would get it in a heartbeat! MM3 is really good, I really like it. Good graphics, good cars, realistic and fun.

MM and MM2 are good too- I have the trials on my computer, but I can't find my CDs for the full version and I can't find a site that has a reliable copy for download (shhhhh :))

I love driving around cities in games and hitting cars and stuff, so much fun. What do other people think of these games?

  9. Microsoft overtake Google in a search engine war? Possible.Unlikely.Market share:Microsoft: 0Google: 100Honestly, I don't know anyone who uses anything other than google. Microsoft Live Search is really really bad, I never find what I am looking for and it is just easier to pop over to google and search it.I also like the fact with google it does maths for you (2 + 4.4) etc. and you can use 'Define:cats' and you get definitions.Plus the fact there is Google Earth and Google Chrome- its a wonder that Google haven't overtaken Microsoft already!A200

  10. Stay awake till about 9/10pm brisbane time and then go to bed, that way you settle in nicely, its the best way. Don't go to sleep too early because your wake up at night. Going to bed tired is good

Ok, so when I arrive in Paris I go to bed at 10PM Paris time, or do I go to bed early Brisbane time? Last night I went to bed at 9:30pm, so I could get enough sleep. Its 6:40AM and our plane leaves at 2:45PM. So when I arrive in Paris 'tomorrow morning' (6:55AM Paris time, 2:55PM Brisbane time (tomorrow) which is 'tomorrow afternoon' here, I go to bed early and tired so by monday I should be used to the time difference?

I don't remember it off the top of my head, but there is a special diet which is supposed to help reduce jet lag. It had something to do with eating high-carb vs. high-protein meals, and you alternate them in a certain way. i'm sure if you google jet lag diet, something equivalent will pop up. I've never tried it, but supposedly it helps.

Diet? I need to do a diet? :)

Not sure about the Jet-lag thing, but be sure to read this Topic before you fly: http://forums.xisto.com/index.php?shoc=60749=And enjoy yourself...

    Thanks, that post was useful!

  11. How do we know that out of space actually 'exists'?How do we know that the earth is not a bubble being used as a scientific experiement by a greater and more powerful species, being shown to millions of their species around their world to provide hope and happiness (aka the truman show)? For all we know, when we 'leave' the world, we just enter in another chamber outside the set of planet 'earth' and just stay in one spot, with everything else coming closer in an optical illusion, and the earth going away in an optical illusion too?But what could we find in outer space? Could we discover another developed world like our own, with people inhabiting it, but thousands of light years away?Who knowsA200

  12. Hello all :) On Saturday afternoon I am heading off from Brisbane airport (GMT 10) to Singapore (GMT 8) in order to get to Paris (currently GMT 2). We leave Brisbane at 2:25PM, arrive Singapore at 8:30PM (or around that, in GMT 8) and then leave Singapore at 11PM to arrive in Paris at 6:40AM (GMT 2). When we arrive in Paris it will be the equivalent of 2PM Australia time. Now I imagine that first day will be pretty horrible as the first thing we do is go up the Eiffel Tower, and then spend the day actually going around doing things. I imagine after the 2nd day there or so I should be used to the local time, hopefully. Apparently going east-west is better than going west-east?But coming back apparently will be horrible- leave Paris at 10PM, arrive Singapore 6 or 7PM and leave Singapore at 11PM to arrive in Brisbane at 9:30AM, I cant remember the exact times so these are estimates. However the day we arrive back home is the last day of holidays, as the next day we have school. Will I be able to stay awake to go to school, as I assume I will be used to Paris time? I have never been to a timezone that drastically different so I am scared of the effects. When I come home should I go straight to bed, or stay awake until the normal bedtime of Brisbane? Any tips or help needed to combat this experience is wanted :)ThanksA200

HYPOTHESIS: FDR and Stalin were effective in the introduction of their economic policies, however each attained major disadvantages that counteracted the positives.

Good Morning Mr Howley and class. Today I will be presenting a comparison between Franklin Roosevelt, President of the United States in the 1930s and Joseph Stalin, leader of the USSR in the same time frame. This comparison will first evaluate the effectiveness of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deals introduced in 1932 and 1933 in the midst of the Great Depression. Secondly, this comparison will analyse the achievements of the economic policies of Joseph Stalin, namely Collectivisation and the Five Year plans.
During the early 1930s, the United States was in midst of the Great Depression. Factories were closing and farmers were forced to destroy the crops they could not sell. Unemployment was at 24.9% with 15 million workers unemployed. A banking crisis was also occurring, with concerned Americans losing confidence in banks and withdrawing their funds, causing banks to close branches. However, Roosevelt gained power in November 1932, with a promise to help the Americans in financial strife, and to lead the country out of the depression. In his Inaugural Speech on March 4, 1933, FDR reassured the American people that everything was fixable.

“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself..."

Roosevelt introduced Emergency Banking Act, whereby he closed all banks and sent agents to inspect their books over four days and only financially sound banks were allowed to reopen. FDR told 60 million Americans what he had in one his “fireside” chats, and people gradually put their savings back into banks, effectively saving the banking industry from collapse.

The second major aspect of the New Deal was its effect on unemployment. In 1929, the unemployment level was at 3.2%. However, the Great Depression of the early 1930s caused it to skyrocket to 24.9% as staff were laid off work by employers struggling to keep their businesses alive. To fix this, FDR introduced a series of alphabet agencies to give the unemployed work. Examples of this include the CCC (Civilian Conversation Corps) who strengthened river banks and planted trees. This caused the unemployment rate to steadily drop to 17.9% in 1939, as seen in this graph, from the Historical Statistics archive of the United States.
This drop in unemployment was also helped by the NRA (National Recovery Administration) where businesses were encouraged to set up codes of good practice and to charge a fair price for their products and pay their employees a fair wage. By displaying a blue eagle on their products, consumers could easily identity businesses that were part of the NRA campaign. (flick slide)

However, the effects of FDR’s New Deal are disputed. Although the level of unemployment dropped with the New Deal as more Americans re-entered the workforce, this came at great cost to the tax payers of America. Federal taxes actually tripled from $1.6 billion in 1933 to $5.3 billion in 1940. In fact, excise tax, personal income tax, corporate income tax, holding company tax and excess profit taxes all increased. Those mainly affected by this were the middle and poor classes, as it mainly fell disproportionately on them. In fact, to listen to FDR’s fireside chats, these people had to pay excise taxes on their radio and electricity. These taxes caused unemployment to average at 17% (flick back one slide), where unemployment had dropped to 12%.

Furthermore, the money that the New Deal bought to America was actually diverted away from southern USA, which was the poorest region and comprised FDRs most solid support. Most of the funds were diverted to the “swing” states of the west and the east, as FDR saw no need to spend money on the south, where support was predominately on his side. It seemed that the New Deals were far too ambitious for the mortgage owners and big businesses, as seen in this cartoon, with FDR in a truck pulling for the future, with the big business struggling to keep up. The New Deal was also motivated by financial gain, slugged by the same old money interests, causing it to crash. It is therefore uncertain whether the New Deals were effective at all in achieving their intended purpose.
At the same time, Joseph Stalin was embarking on an economic revival and change in Russia. He said in 1931:

“We are 50 or 100 years behind the advanced countries. We must make good this lag in 10 years or be crushed.”
Russia at that time was not as developed as the rest of Europe, with countries such as Germany powering ahead. Stalin thus introduced the Five Year Plans and collectivisation. He anticipated a 3 fold increase in oil output, 4 fold increase in iron and steel and a 5 fold increase in coal. However, it is doubtful that these levels were actually reached. In 1929, in Pravda, Stalin said “By the spring of 1930, we shall have 60,000 tractors in the field.” But such numbers of tractors did not exist, nor did the factories to create them.

Collectivisation aimed to centralise farming peasants in collective farms, called Holkhoz where peasants and farms were taken under state control. In total, 26 million peasants were collectivised which resulted in an increase in the procurement of grains, from 10.8 million tonnes in 1929, increasing to 23.3 million tonnes in 1933 and 31.8 million tonnes in 1937. The real amount of harvest in 1933 is actually estimated as 20% less than the official recorded amount of 23.3 tonnes.
However, the collectivisation in the USSR resulted in catastrophic deaths, in Kazakhstan alone, 1 million peasants died, and 6.5 million people died when Stalin engaged in “dekulakisation”, where the richer peasants “kulaks” were driven from their land. The collectivisation also created the worst famine in Russian history in 1932. It was predominately caused by government actions, as grain was seized from peasants. In total, 7 million people died in the famine, with 5 million people dying in Ukraine. It was not until 1950 that the peasant food consumption reached the same levels as the 1926 level. 97% of all peasant households were collectivised, with private ownership of land almost eliminated. Wages also fell by 50% between 1928 and 1936, as did living standards.

On the other hand, Stalin’s Five Year Plans did cause positive effects for USSR. In 1928, the USSR produced 25% as much steel as Germany, and this increased to 40% in 1940. New industries were developed, including aluminium and new industrial areas, as well as a new skilled workforce. The largest iron and steel complex in Europe was constructed at Magnitogorsk, however, it was found to be uneconomic as trains used up 40% of the coal they carried in the 1100km journey east.
In conclusion, FDR and Stalin were not as successful in their economic policies as the regular consumer is led to believe. Although FDR did reduce unemployment, and Stalin did help industrialise Russia and increase the efficiency of agriculture and farms, it came at a great cost. The people of America suffered with greater taxes, causing the loss of jobs that were created by the New Deal, and millions of Russians died in the famines caused by collectivisation under the Stalin regime.

  14. December 12, 2012.4:44AM.A North Korean plane heads over Washington, completely invisible due to new technological advances at the time. As it reaches 5AM, a bomb is dropped from the plane and lands square onto the White House.BANG BANG BANGA whole chunk of the USA is gone.7AM. A plane appears over New York, and in an instant, another couple of million people are dead, the same happens in Chicago and Los Angeles. The USA gather their bombs up and send planes over North Korea, thinking mistakenly that it was the Koreans. As the USA planes get close, NK realises and sends out a whole army of planes to destroy the bombers. NK wins and the bombers are destroyed. The USA is screwed.NK then send a whole big bang of planes over to USA and bomb whats left. By now, all 330 million residents are dead- the USA is now a nuclear wasteland.NK and China fight over who will be the big world power. China bombs NK and NK is wiped out.Meanwhile, the rest of the world takes notice and gets concerned. The UN launch an emergency meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, and most of the world unites against China.Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, France, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Romania, United Kingdom, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia and South Africa. They call it the ANBAFCMFGSIRUSIJMS league. However, China gains an allegiance with India, Vietnam, Phillipines, Russia, Iran and Saudi Arabia all team up. They decide to bomb out Europe, to kill off half of the ANBAFCMFGSIRUSIJMS league. South Africa is completely obliberated, France and Germany fall, UK goes, Switzerland bombed out, Singapore is also attacked and defeated. Canada try to save Australia but are knocked out.Which leaves Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Indonesia, Japan and Mongolia. Mongolia, Indonesia, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil all leave the league, leaving OZ and NZ against a massive army.Blah blah blah I am getting bored, OZ and NZ are knocked away, and the rest just bash each other up until they're dead. The people of New Caledonia wake up on a nice summer morning and are completely oblivious to the fact the rest of the world doesn't exist. They live in peace and life a long life.End of story.A200
