  1. Your new sigs are even better. I like the effects. Also, thank you for the websites that you showed me.Perhaps I will get into more work with GIMP. It really is a nice program. As for your text, I think that your text isn't too pale, but on some of your sigs, you needto change the color of your text to make it more visible. That isn't really important,I think, but just makes it a little easier to read.
  2. That's a good mindset to have. With most of my work, I have a mindset of "Eh, it's okay" meaningthat my work isn't really horrible nor is it perfection achieved. What you do is certainly better than what I could manage on GIMP. Do you know of any good tutorials that could get me started?
  3. Well, those are actually pretty nice. They aren't really ugly or anything. They're probably better than what I could manage. If you do even more practice, you will get even better with it and maybe you will be capable of making truly awesome sigs.Don't discourage yourself by thinking that they are bad sigs.Seriously, they're pretty nice. I especially like the first one.
  4. I don't use smilies in forum posts or twitter posts. I mostly use them in IRC and IM. Smilies are useful for sarcasm and jokes, as mentioned before. I've met people that make it a habit to punctuate every sentence with a smilie. That kinda looks like this. and so on like that. This can annoy some people. I am sort of neutral with smilies, as long as they are not overused. I sometimes use them in sigs of forums that I visit though. The use of smilies really depends on the person and what they are talking about. A technical tutorial might not have a whole lot of smilies, but a list of one-liners probably would be riddled with them. If a person that likes to be funny is writing the technical tutorial, there might be more smilies than a person that really just wants to write the tutorial and code. People shouldn't use a whole lot of different types of smilies. Even though some people can come up with thousands of smilies, only about twenty should be used. That's all just my opinion, of course.
  5. Game consoles are always coming out to stay ahead of the competition. If Company A released a totally awesome console, Company B needs to get a better console on the market really fast or they will lose money. Companies need to keep on innovating almost constantly to keep up with the competition. Now that companies are selling consoles at a loss and raising the prices of games to make up for it, it's important that lots of people buy consoles and lots of games. Since some games are made for more than one console, it's important that Company A has a better system so the game looks and plays better. If competition was less, then companies would release consoles later than they would. They would also be sloppier as they would be at a lesser disadvantage because there would be lesser competition. You should be thankful that there is competition, as that provides a better product.
  6. A while ago, I tried Inbox.Com. I also have a gmail account. I can assure you that Gmail is the best choice here. Gmail has a spam filter that is nearly perfect. Very rarely, a spam message will make it to my inbox. I can press a button, and it's gone. You also have to consider the security. Since Google is extremely rich, they can spend money on security. With Inbox.Com, there is a lesser guarentee that your stuff is safe. Also, if you don't like a feature, you can search for Firefox extensions, Stylish styles, and Greasemonkey scripts ( assuming you use Firefox ). Many Firefox extensions, Stylish styles, and Greasemonkey scripts have added features, removed annoyances, and have made Gmail look better. Since Gmail is a lot more popular than Inbox.Com, there are more Gmail users who will write the code for Firefox extensions, Stylish styles, and Greasemonkey scripts than Inbox.Com. This means that a larger quantity and a higher quality of scripts will be created. A few of the previous posters also mentioned integration with other Google services. You will find that useful once you become a power user of those Google products. Also, Inbox.Com may be overselling ( lying about ) their email storage. With Gmail, most people would notice overselling instantly, so Google would never dare attempt something like that. That goes for other bad things that pop up. Because of Gmail's popularity, Google cannot do anything purposely bad without getting in massive trouble. That means that you can trust Google with even your most sensitive stuff ( although it isn't recommended to let anybody else have you sensitive stuff ). Google also will promise more uptime. If the servers of Inbox.Com are down, it might take a while for them to fix it. If the servers that Gmail is on are down, Google will fix the problem as quickly as possible, and you know that the Gmail team is skilled enough to find and fix the problem quickly. The reasons to choose Gmail are too numerous to mention. I suggest that you don't even give Inbox.Com a second glance and just go with Gmail.
  7. I think that people would need to be really heavy water users to generate a significant amount of electricity. Also, it would have to be designedso it would be completely unobtrusive to the user. That means that the generators would have to be completely out of site of the user.Suppose the generators were visible and a small child stuck his or her finger in the turbine?Hiding the generator restricts the places where it could go. Also, it would make repairs to the pipes more difficult as you would have to workaround or temporarily remove the small generators.Another thing, people that save water generate less electricity. That is a disadvantage to people that are really trying to do good for the environment. Some people even might be motivated to use water more to generate more electricity. This would have to be discouraged as conserving wateris important. If the generator has to be unobtrusive to avoid problems, how would it be repaired? Repairing other things would be difficult, but repairingthe generator itself would be harder.I think that such an idea would be applicable in a factory that needs a lot of water to build things. In a household, it just would be too difficult.
  8. I think it's a little too basic and colorful. I think more elements need to be the same color. Add some contrast.Looking at other websites and really trying to make a good design is a good way on how to get a better design.I am not good at eye candy either. My main strength is making text easy to read. However, if this is just a basic presentation for school, I think you only need to worry about changingthe font on the navigation.Just keep these tips in mind for other designs that you may make in the future.
  9. Didn't anybody tell you? A study has shown that E85 is about 27% less efficient ( I saw it on CNN ) than normal gasoline. In the process of creating ethanol, you still need to use gasoline ( tractors, shipping, etc. ). E85 may not be what it's cracked up to be. I do agree that America, especially the part where I live, doesn't have the public transportation system of Europe. Using a bicycle to go places is a joke where I live, especially in the Winter months. Hydrogen fuel cell is too far off in the future to make a difference. I think that we need electric cars. Electric cars should be able to make a difference as other technologies that can be employed by power plants ( solar, wind, etc. ) can be used to fuel cars more efficiently.
  10. I agree. The words fading in are a little bit choppy. At the end where the URL comes, the font is not that good and it's hard to read. Your vertical one has some space at the top and bottom that isn't being used. You could probably remove that and shorten the file size. It does look pretty cool though. You might want to try Flash or DHTML or something because even though I am on DSL, it took longer than it should of to load. Sorry for the slightly negative comments, but the only problem I would worry about if I was you would be the choppy words. You can get to the other two later.
  11. I am against all plastic surgery just because you don't think that you look good. I am also againsta whole lot of makeup. You also have to think that you would have a chance of getting infectedduring recovery. Increasing your chances of getting sick shouldn't be worth it to look a little youngerfor a short time.People don't remember other people for looks as much as they remember them for their actions. If you are nice, kind, and ugly, people will still love you. If you are mean, selfish, and pretty, nobody will like you.If you eat right, exercise, and don't drink too much alcohol, you should age pretty gracefully. Even if youdon't, most nice people only care if you're nice too.
  12. To answer your question, I decided that I would imagine myself in a world without the Internet. My result was this: I would be stupid. I would be so stupid that even I would laugh at myself. The Internet is a massive source of knowledge in the form of chatrooms, forums, articles, search engines, blogs, etc. The Internet can empower too. Any person can create a website and get rich and famous.I'm actually working on that right now with my own website. There really isn't a whole lot to explain since most of the previous posters nailed it. I thinkthat anybody that has ever used the Internet to get news or obscure information knowsexactly why it is awesome.
  13. I fully understand your point, but we seriously have a lot of ocean water. 70% of Earth's surface is covered with water. Most of that is ocean water. Ocean water is also pretty deep too. I also understand that we could suck the oceans of the world dry. But what would happen to our other resources? If we take care of our other resources, we should not get the demand of ocean water that will make a dent in it. Imagine what would happen to metal mining. The metal mining industry is one of the most hazardous to the environment. If there is such a massive demand of water, and people are conserving it because cleaning ocean water is expensive, then the industry would wreak massive havoc on the world compared to what's happening now. Because people are trying to protect our other resources, if we can keep our more delicate resources safe, we can keep ocean water safe. PS: I've seen The Day After Tomorrow. I have it on DVD here.
  14. Well, that wouldn't be a good idea either. Imagine if somebody else configured your voice-activated television before you had a chance to and they ended up configuring it so nobody but them could control the channel. Some people pulling a prank on people that aren't tech-savvy with configuring their voice-activated television could destroy sales as people wouldn't want to buy them anymore. Since problems like this and hacks for that matter would only come when they get popular, it would be devastating to the company selling them because they would end up with a big stock of televisions that used to be in popular demand but sales were hitting rock bottom. And even then if only one person could control the television, voices from the TV could still affect it. There may be a person on the television that sounds a lot like you. Your own voice could come if you're watching a video that you made. Few things should be voice activated, and even then it should be used with care.
  15. For all those people that like to code it by hand and not use a WYSIWYG editor, have their HTML and CSS standards compliant, syntax highlighting, and basically have a Notepad on steroids, I suggest tsWebEditor at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It's main focus is syntax highlighting. It supports syntax highlighting for languages I never even knew existed. You can even edit the syntax highlighter if you don't like the colors. When typing in a color for the CSS, it has a list of color names that you can use that are accepted by most web browsers. tsWebEditor is truely awesome. However, it has no preview or WYSIWYG mode or anything like that. Just coding by hand improved by a lot.
  16. I really like your site design. You clearly know how to make a website look good. Your writing style is also pretty impressive. All you need is more movie reviews, and you will be set for a lot of visitors. You also made a good choice using WordPress. It's a great CMS. I seriously think that your website will be successful. Good luck.
  17. Actually, the VTech shooter did have sort of a record. He was shown to have some mental problems, but never got the help that he needed for some reason. Also, maybe the United States needs to change the amendments. The right to bear arms was given to us because our founding fathers thought we would be safe that way. If the 13 colonies didn't have any guns, we would not have won the American Revolutionary War. The militias of the colonies would not have any weapons to fight with. Giving the people of our country to bear arms would keep the militias strong. However, today we have one of the strongest military forces in the world. We don't really have the need to have small militias to fight enemies off. Times have changed, and our laws will have to change. Although I know that many people would hate such a law, I think that it would keep us safe. Our founding fathers even thought of in their wildest dreams a person that would take a gun and kill 32 of his own countrymen by shooting at them execution-style and then committing suicide. Guns are a tool to kill a living thing. People use guns in hunting, murder, and military. People do use guns for target practice, but historically, that is only to increase the person's power in killing. For target practice, there are those guns that shoot wax bullets. We need guns in the military, no question. However, I don't know how to make sure that guns don't play a part in murder, but people can still hunt with them. If a gun can kill a deer, than a gun can kill a person.
  18. Well, it sounds like you want a downloadable software calender, but I will suggest some web ones too. I recommend ## Google Calender ( Google style beta, so you're safe. WEB ) ## Scrybe ( Real beta, so be careful. WEB ) ## Mozilla Sunbird ( Not beta, as far as I know, downloadable ) ## CalGoo ( allows you to view Google calender from a desktop application, beta ) If you use Firefox or Thunderbird, there are extensions that add a calender functionality to those applications. However, some of those are not full-fledged calender applications. Also, since they are extensions of another application, you might lose your data if something goes wrong with Firefox. Never store any really important stuff on here. Keep a backup on a USB key or just the old fashioned way of paper.
  19. What a coincidence, I was just drawing a logo for my website pretty recently. I would like a logo for my website too. Don't feel too pressured or anything to get to me, just take my request as the very last one.If you do get the time and the will to do so, PM me and we'll talk. But seriously, consider me last. I am not in great need for a logo, but I need some serious improvements on my existing ones.Thank you for considering my request.
  20. Having a voice-activated anything is bad unless you're really careful. Has anybody ever read that Dilbert comic where Dilbert gets a new voice-activated computer and a coworker shouts "delete all files" at the computer? Something like that could become a problem. People in the room that want different channels would have to go into a shouting match. At least with a remote, you can take any additional remotes that control the TV and hide them from the person that likes different channels than you. Couldn't noise from the television affect the channels? What if a character shouts "off" on a television show? What if a character says "they love channel six"? This could cause some problems. Also, I think there was a channel that broadcasts videos submitted by users. What if somebody put a video on there that was nothing except a person saying the word "off" repeatedly for an hour? You would lose complete control of your television as long as the video was playing as as soon as you turn it on, the person says the next "off" and turns it off. That could be sort of a virus for a television. However, it would be extremely difficult to even implement a voice-activated television. You have to consider that it would take a lot of configuration and processing power. Lazy people don't want a lot of configuration. A voice activated television would suck electricity a lot. Even when it would be turned off as part of the television still needs to be on to detect the voice. You see this with normal televisions and remotes. The television is still using some electricity to detect an infrared signal from the remote. Since a voice-activated television would suck much more power than a normal one, people concerned about their electricity bill wouldn't like those televisions. You also have to consider that if your television got popular, a lot more electricity would be used. In an age when we are moving away from fossil fuels, having a bigger need for electricity is the last thing we need.
  21. I didn't mean it like that. I meant that we should lower the rate that babies are produced so taking salt water and filtering it which has a high per-person cost, would have a slightly lower total cost. I should probably add to my list to reduce pollution, even though a bunch of people already mentioned that.
  22. First of all, we aren't running out of water. We are running out of drinkable water. Second of all, our population is increasing at a rate too fast to give them water or a bunch of other natural resources. Third of all, global warming floods some areas and dries our some areas. It relocates the rain. ______ Here's how to solve the problem: ## Conserve water ( duh ) ## Recycle water ( mentioned before ) ## Import water ## Recycle pee ( it's gross, but they recycle the pee on the International Space Station, and it's some of the cleanest water on Earth [ well technically not on Earth ] ) ## Try to lower the rate our population is growing at so we won't have as many people consuming natural resources, including water. ## Educate people about water ## Take water from the ocean and remove the salt. It has a lot of disadvantages like price and everything, but it's a good natural resource. ______ I don't believe that humans have the capability to cause a significant drop in salt water. Even though we can ravage the environment six ways from Sunday, the vast expanse of salt water is simply too much for us to significantly lower. I doubt that humans can survive long enough to significantly lower it anyway. If so much water is needed, then how much of other natural resources are being used? Those other natural resources like electricity, metals, land, etc. would have a tremendously negative impact on civilization and may cause it's end even before we get to the point where we can literally suck our planet dry.
  23. Well, I don't really think any of them will take off. Sorry to be a party pooper, but it is in my nature to explain why these won't work. However, I think that I could modify some of your inventions to do something cool. This sounds pretty fun, but it isn't very efficient, like many people mentioned. It is also noisy, like many people mentioned. However, I believe that a modification of this invention could be pretty cool. Basically, the modification would enable your vehicle to run on ice, instead of land Instead of wheels on the wagon, put a two to three inch wooden board. Make sure that the board is sanded off and polished and everything is done to make the board smooth. Also make one side of the board rounded over. Now, remove the wheels on the wagon. Put the board on the wagon to make it like a sled with only one board. Put the rounded side facing the ground. Now get the little sticks that you get when you go skiing. Use those to control turning. You turn by leaning to one side and use the little skiing things to prevent you from falling over. You can also use them to slow down. It's important that the board is smooth and that you only use one. The board should be about 78-80% of the length of the red wagon. No offense but that would never work. Flies have the capability to sense air pressure. The person that invented the flyswatter knew this and put holes in the fly swatter so there wouldn't be a massive wall of air pressure in front of the swatter that would warn the fly that it would probably die if it didn't move. Having a fan and attaching a flyswatter to it would do nothing to kill a fly. However, there is one upside to it. Because a fly wouldn't be swatted because of the massive increase of air pressure, it naturally wouldn't go near it. Your invention could be used as an insect repellent that works on short ranges. I suppose that you could put a cake right under the fan and flies wouldn't dare try to land on the cake. I don't know. Maybe some flies might attempt to do so. No comments, really. That's just cool. I think you should post a picture of that or maybe a Youtube video showing the action figure climbing. Now, this is a good idea, but like some of the others, it could be modified. First of all, the crystal would steal a lot of the light and having it be a small flashlight with a traditional bulb wouldn't make it very efficient either. The crystal also scatters the light more so the light on a certain area would be dimmer. However, you could make it more efficient by getting a powerful laser pointer like the ones at http://www.wickedlasers.com/ and tape the crystal to that. I even think that there is a video of somebody pointing a laser at a crystal on that website. If you really want to get powerful, why not attack several lasers and attach their power sources through a parallel circuit and then tape the crystal. You could manage a powerful and efficient flashlight that would be ideal for lighting a general area, but not so much a specific area.
  24. You make an extremely interesting point. However, you also have to consider that games are based on life. Can life really be compared to anything else? What else is out there that is as big as life? I really don't know because I'm not talking just about Earth, but our whole Universe with other lifeforms ( come on, our universe is so massive, life can't have just been created only once ) and the massive swirling galaxies rushing away from eachother, etc. Because I really don't know what to think, I like the idea that I'm playing myself. It kinda fits in sort of. After all, you get to make choices, but you don't always get the result that you wanted. However, even this theory is flawed as games are based on life so you have to make choices and everything. I don't think that we will ever figure this out. Even if we travel to another galaxy and go everywhere that's possible, I don't think that humans will ever be able to figure what really is going on here.
  25. Well, I didn't expect my idea to be actually functional, just some of my thoughts. I am only one normal person. However, I want to know how the rich could affect the system. The rich couldn't corrupt all the people working on making the test. They could only corrupt one or two people, I assume. The rest of the staff would notice of one or two staffmembers started making suggestions that were stupid. Anybody can influence a vote, but in my idea, the vote isn't given the full power of decision. Corrupting the dictator would be difficult as he would be guarded. Also, portions of tests would try to find out the morals of a person. A person that passes the test and the votes in my idea would be difficult to corrupt. As for the difficulty for such an organizational structure, I think that most countries that have nuclear capability could have a system of government like this. But I think that in the end, there is no way to stop a determined bad person from taking power permanently. If the good side keeps trying and succeeds, the bad side will keep trying too.
