  1. Your new sigs are even better. I like the effects. Also, thank you for the websites that you showed me.Perhaps I will get into more work with GIMP. It really is a nice program. As for your text, I think that your text isn't too pale, but on some of your sigs, you needto change the color of your text to make it more visible. That isn't really important,I think, but just makes it a little easier to read.
  2. That's a good mindset to have. With most of my work, I have a mindset of "Eh, it's okay" meaningthat my work isn't really horrible nor is it perfection achieved. What you do is certainly better than what I could manage on GIMP. Do you know of any good tutorials that could get me started?
  3. Well, those are actually pretty nice. They aren't really ugly or anything. They're probably better than what I could manage. If you do even more practice, you will get even better with it and maybe you will be capable of making truly awesome sigs.Don't discourage yourself by thinking that they are bad sigs.Seriously, they're pretty nice. I especially like the first one.
  4. I don't use smilies in forum posts or twitter posts. I mostly use them in IRC and IM. Smilies are useful for sarcasm and jokes, as mentioned before. I've met people that make it a habit to punctuate every sentence with a smilie. That kinda looks like this. and so on like that. This can annoy some people. I am sort of neutral with smilies, as long as they are not overused. I sometimes use them in sigs of forums that I visit though. The use of smilies really depends on the person and what they are talking about. A technical tutorial might not have a whole lot of smilies, but a list of one-liners probably would be riddled with them. If a person that likes to be funny is writing the technical tutorial, there might be more smilies than a person that really just wants to write the tutorial and code. People shouldn't use a whole lot of different types of smilies. Even though some people can come up with thousands of smilies, only about twenty should be used. That's all just my opinion, of course.
  5. Game consoles are always coming out to stay ahead of the competition. If Company A released a totally awesome console, Company B needs to get a better console on the market really fast or they will lose money. Companies need to keep on innovating almost constantly to keep up with the competition. Now that companies are selling consoles at a loss and raising the prices of games to make up for it, it's important that lots of people buy consoles and lots of games. Since some games are made for more than one console, it's important that Company A has a better system so the game looks and plays better. If competition was less, then companies would release consoles later than they would. They would also be sloppier as they would be at a lesser disadvantage because there would be lesser competition. You should be thankful that there is competition, as that provides a better product.
  6. A while ago, I tried Inbox.Com. I also have a gmail account. I can assure you that Gmail is the best choice here. Gmail has a spam filter that is nearly perfect. Very rarely, a spam message will make it to my inbox. I can press a button, and it's gone. You also have to consider the security. Since Google is extremely rich, they can spend money on security. With Inbox.Com, there is a lesser guarentee that your stuff is safe. Also, if you don't like a feature, you can search for Firefox extensions, Stylish styles, and Greasemonkey scripts ( assuming you use Firefox ). Many Firefox extensions, Stylish styles, and Greasemonkey scripts have added features, removed annoyances, and have made Gmail look better. Since Gmail is a lot more popular than Inbox.Com, there are more Gmail users who will write the code for Firefox extensions, Stylish styles, and Greasemonkey scripts than Inbox.Com. This means that a larger quantity and a higher quality of scripts will be created. A few of the previous posters also mentioned integration with other Google services. You will find that useful once you become a power user of those Google products. Also, Inbox.Com may be overselling ( lying about ) their email storage. With Gmail, most people would notice overselling instantly, so Google would never dare attempt something like that. That goes for other bad things that pop up. Because of Gmail's popularity, Google cannot do anything purposely bad without getting in massive trouble. That means that you can trust Google with even your most sensitive stuff ( although it isn't recommended to let anybody else have you sensitive stuff ). Google also will promise more uptime. If the servers of Inbox.Com are down, it might take a while for them to fix it. If the servers that Gmail is on are down, Google will fix the problem as quickly as possible, and you know that the Gmail team is skilled enough to find and fix the problem quickly. The reasons to choose Gmail are too numerous to mention. I suggest that you don't even give Inbox.Com a second glance and just go with Gmail.
  7. I think that people would need to be really heavy water users to generate a significant amount of electricity. Also, it would have to be designedso it would be completely unobtrusive to the user. That means that the generators would have to be completely out of site of the user.Suppose the generators were visible and a small child stuck his or her finger in the turbine?Hiding the generator restricts the places where it could go. Also, it would make repairs to the pipes more difficult as you would have to workaround or temporarily remove the small generators.Another thing, people that save water generate less electricity. That is a disadvantage to people that are really trying to do good for the environment. Some people even might be motivated to use water more to generate more electricity. This would have to be discouraged as conserving wateris important. If the generator has to be unobtrusive to avoid problems, how would it be repaired? Repairing other things would be difficult, but repairingthe generator itself would be harder.I think that such an idea would be applicable in a factory that needs a lot of water to build things. In a household, it just would be too difficult.
  8. I think it's a little too basic and colorful. I think more elements need to be the same color. Add some contrast.Looking at other websites and really trying to make a good design is a good way on how to get a better design.I am not good at eye candy either. My main strength is making text easy to read. However, if this is just a basic presentation for school, I think you only need to worry about changingthe font on the navigation.Just keep these tips in mind for other designs that you may make in the future.
  9. Didn't anybody tell you? A study has shown that E85 is about 27% less efficient ( I saw it on CNN ) than normal gasoline. In the process of creating ethanol, you still need to use gasoline ( tractors, shipping, etc. ). E85 may not be what it's cracked up to be. I do agree that America, especially the part where I live, doesn't have the public transportation system of Europe. Using a bicycle to go places is a joke where I live, especially in the Winter months. Hydrogen fuel cell is too far off in the future to make a difference. I think that we need electric cars. Electric cars should be able to make a difference as other technologies that can be employed by power plants ( solar, wind, etc. ) can be used to fuel cars more efficiently.
  10. I agree. The words fading in are a little bit choppy. At the end where the URL comes, the font is not that good and it's hard to read. Your vertical one has some space at the top and bottom that isn't being used. You could probably remove that and shorten the file size. It does look pretty cool though. You might want to try Flash or DHTML or something because even though I am on DSL, it took longer than it should of to load. Sorry for the slightly negative comments, but the only problem I would worry about if I was you would be the choppy words. You can get to the other two later.
  11. I am against all plastic surgery just because you don't think that you look good. I am also againsta whole lot of makeup. You also have to think that you would have a chance of getting infectedduring recovery. Increasing your chances of getting sick shouldn't be worth it to look a little youngerfor a short time.People don't remember other people for looks as much as they remember them for their actions. If you are nice, kind, and ugly, people will still love you. If you are mean, selfish, and pretty, nobody will like you.If you eat right, exercise, and don't drink too much alcohol, you should age pretty gracefully. Even if youdon't, most nice people only care if you're nice too.
  12. To answer your question, I decided that I would imagine myself in a world without the Internet. My result was this: I would be stupid. I would be so stupid that even I would laugh at myself. The Internet is a massive source of knowledge in the form of chatrooms, forums, articles, search engines, blogs, etc. The Internet can empower too. Any person can create a website and get rich and famous.I'm actually working on that right now with my own website. There really isn't a whole lot to explain since most of the previous posters nailed it. I thinkthat anybody that has ever used the Internet to get news or obscure information knowsexactly why it is awesome.
  13. I fully understand your point, but we seriously have a lot of ocean water. 70% of Earth's surface is covered with water. Most of that is ocean water. Ocean water is also pretty deep too. I also understand that we could suck the oceans of the world dry. But what would happen to our other resources? If we take care of our other resources, we should not get the demand of ocean water that will make a dent in it. Imagine what would happen to metal mining. The metal mining industry is one of the most hazardous to the environment. If there is such a massive demand of water, and people are conserving it because cleaning ocean water is expensive, then the industry would wreak massive havoc on the world compared to what's happening now. Because people are trying to protect our other resources, if we can keep our more delicate resources safe, we can keep ocean water safe. PS: I've seen The Day After Tomorrow. I have it on DVD here.
  14. Well, that wouldn't be a good idea either. Imagine if somebody else configured your voice-activated television before you had a chance to and they ended up configuring it so nobody but them could control the channel. Some people pulling a prank on people that aren't tech-savvy with configuring their voice-activated television could destroy sales as people wouldn't want to buy them anymore. Since problems like this and hacks for that matter would only come when they get popular, it would be devastating to the company selling them because they would end up with a big stock of televisions that used to be in popular demand but sales were hitting rock bottom. And even then if only one person could control the television, voices from the TV could still affect it. There may be a person on the television that sounds a lot like you. Your own voice could come if you're watching a video that you made. Few things should be voice activated, and even then it should be used with care.
  15. For all those people that like to code it by hand and not use a WYSIWYG editor, have their HTML and CSS standards compliant, syntax highlighting, and basically have a Notepad on steroids, I suggest tsWebEditor at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It's main focus is syntax highlighting. It supports syntax highlighting for languages I never even knew existed. You can even edit the syntax highlighter if you don't like the colors. When typing in a color for the CSS, it has a list of color names that you can use that are accepted by most web browsers. tsWebEditor is truely awesome. However, it has no preview or WYSIWYG mode or anything like that. Just coding by hand improved by a lot.
