  1. I tend to be attracted to guys for their qualities, not because they're a challenge... I'm afraid I don't understand the 'love as a competitive sport' angle. Anyway, if I were you I would just bring the subject around to his girlfriend in conversation and ask one or two casual questions about her, see if you can get him to talk about her. If you get him to talk about her for a little bit, you'll be able to tell how he feels for her (or, if she doesnt exist at all ) by what he says, tone of voice, body language, etc. That sort of information can really help when deciding what to do.
  2. Kissing/holding hands/etc is OK by me, full on tonsil hockey is a little gross (and rude if they are doing it right in front of you), but so are a lot of other things. *shrugs* I think its silly to make up rules about it, so long as people arent takin each others clothes off in the hallway and such, although sometimes people's PDAs seem inconsiderate of other people.
  3. But a lot of people don't believe in God... like me. :| and although I wouldnt have sex without love (dont believe in marriage so much either), thats not because I find it 'immoral' but because I know I'm not emotionally equipped to deal with casual sex, so its a personal choice I've made. And there's worse kiddy rhymes, that one's pretty tame in comparison to Miss Molly IMO.
  4. I think that, of course, spreading the word about sexualities and how common it is will allow people to become more accepting about other people's choice to be true to themselves in that respect. I think it matters how it is done, however; one boy at our school last year attempted to start up a GSA (gay-straight alliance) in order to cut down on homophobia in the school... however most of the time was spent talking about homophobia in other countries and what terrible monsters homophobes are... which not only avoided our own problems but, in my opinion, was completely incorrect. Most of the homophobes I come across seem like normal and reasonable people at first. Anyway, I'm glad to see that your school is improving in that respect. Hearing something like that, esp. about a religious school, gives me some hope. Argh, I know. I am 16, and people have actually suggested to me that maybe I am just confused about my sexuality, and have been for the past 8 years. When you know, you know- regardless of age- but for some reason people don't understand this. I think that perhaps people are reluctant to admit that people don't 'turn' or 'decide' to be gay/bi/asexual suddenly, rather than it just coming about as naturally as being straight does for others.
  5. Think of it from her point of view; a boy that she likes (and probably, has felt fondly of for more than just one day) asks her out, gets her hopes up, and then crushes them... how nice! Instead of having a supportive shoulder to cry on, she gets yelled at. If she was annoying you so much couldn't you have just let her be? And after getting yelled at by her 'friends', she tries not to bother you by pretending to be OK... and this just annoys you further. Wow. Yeah, she overreacted by a lot, but that doesn't mean you have to be so hostile towards her. You act as if her being sad is somehow an attack upon you.
  6. I find it extremely annoying when hosts are vague about supported features (php etc), so that I only find out it does not support something I need once I have already put a lot of work into a project. Then I just have to go try another and hope it works ok... what a waste of time eh?
  7. Ding ding ding. Its just natural for me to want to go with a friend I think, not for protection purposes (maybe it is because I am a smaller town girl, but you seem a lil paranoid about those public washrooms!) but so we can keep each other company and also, gossip about anyone outside who may be waiting for us. (Only nice things of course ) Plus its a good excuse to touch up makeup, check the hair, etc while you wait for your friend to finish. Silly, yeah, but it doesnt hurt anyone, so whatever.
  8. I'm sorry, but when someone spends all that time provoking dangerous animals... how is it such a surprise when he is killed by one? Wasn't that his entire gimmick- that the animals he poked at were deadly? I can't say I feel sorry for him, since he decided to take those risks of his own free will, although I have to feel a bit bad for his kids. Not only do they have to deal with all the stuff a 'normal' kid with a single mom would, they get to go through life with everyone around them knowing how their dad died, bringing it up, etc... No doubt this whole mess will continue to cause them more pain in the future.
  9. I have to admit I'd far rather someone use something like "Let's make like a fabric softener and snuggle" than some of the disgusting things I've heard people use. Seriously there is being blunt and then there is just plain sleazy...
  10. I get annoyed at "I'll pray for you", but not "Bless you" because... well although it was originally religious (nice friendly people helping you drive out the devil ), I doubt anyone today says that in the honest belief that your body is battling with demons. What makes me just plain angry is when people tell me what to do based on what their religion dictates. They don't adhere to my moral codes, why should I to theirs?Personally, if people were repeatedly saying things like that, and they knew it bothered me, I'd just go around saying, "Satan bless!" and "I'll sacrifice a goat for you, dear". I'm not Satanic but I have a funny feeling it would either make them understand and stop, or go away.
  11. My name is Meg, so this is me. Its somewhat accurate, I guess, but as someone said already they are like horoscopes- so vague that they are true for everyone. I think these type things are more for self-reflection (since they usually make people think, "hey that sort of fits me because..." or "yeah thats happened to me when...") and entertainment purposes than to actually outright tell people how they are. Sorta reminds me of this one test I took in psychology class, we answered a 5 page thing of nonsense questions and we were then given a sheet that told us about our personality based on the results. We were told to put up our hands if we thought the test captured our personality accurately, and almost everyone in the class raised their hands. Turns out everyone got the same result sheet. I love the smart ones. There's nothing better than a cute nerd.
  12. The person who posted this said it was actually "Unreal Script", whatever this means. It definitely does not look like PHP though... the variables have no dollar signs. And I didnt think php could have classes (although I may be wrong, I am no expert )
  13. Hah, now this is a word that can come in handy. I tried to go find a pronounciation but apparently it can be pronounced however you like, fi-nord, fnord, F nord, etc. Fnord is the little green pebble in your shoe.
  14. The thought of numbers that big just makes my brain hurt. Hehe rahul, when would you be using these words in day-to-day conversations? I think you'd have to come up with excuses just to use them, and then probably nobody would understand- unless your friends are all mathematicians! Google is a good name also because it reminds people (well, me) of ogle, and it helps you look for (at) things.
  15. I used to use an 'unshopped' version of that chupucabra Bradley posted as my MSN picture; funny looking thing isnt it? It wouldnt surprise me too much if the lil thing was real or at least based in truth, after reading about real-life "mermaids" (Sirenomelia) I can believe in the existance of just about anything. Although... it seems more likely to me that it would be a mutated dog/canine-like animal than the illustrations on that howstuffworks page. Those pictures reminded me more of really old horror movies involving swamps than a livestock-snatcher.
  16. I think that a lot of things would be possible if we knew a lot more about the human genome than we did, and had a lot more technology.I think the question is, why would you want to do that? It would be awful cruel to do that to a helpless little baby, and I don't think there's a real need for it. Making sure your kid is healthy is one thing, and trying to turn them into something bizarre just for the sake of it is another.
  17. Me too... but I can solve all 6 faces (by peeling off the stickers ) How would you even know when it was solved. They're exactly the same, except for the colors of the stickers.
  18. I'm not sure this is entirely true; I (and most people, I think) can whip up some HTML pretty quick, but on the few occasions I've tried to format some XHTML for a friend, I've gotten quite a headache... the two 'languages' are obviously related but I've found XHTML is way too strict. Maybe I just need more practice, but I certainly won't be seeking out any more headaches for now. Also did I read that someone thought php was strict? When I get through with projects my php code is so sloppy! I'll clean up some of that code eventually though. Maybe.
  19. I used to play a few years ago... there's just so many people and so new features that the 'feel' of the site seems to have changed since then. I tend to prefer a little smaller of a community, I guess.
  20. I have to wonder what a free hosting service would do with that information. It seems unneccessary, and although I tend not to be too protective of my own personal info... phone number?!? I probably would put in fake info, if anything.
  21. Yeah, the uptime is pretty awful. I have a blog there; I don't blog often... but it's still pretty annoying.
  22. You should also make sure your contract with your ISP allows this before trying it; my little brother's friend attempted to set up a web server and they automatically switched his basic/personal type plan to a business one (he was doing this just for fun, out of his house) and the bill was huge.
  23. I'm sure it varies depending on what sort of site you're making and how its implemented, but I know a lot of people find the marquee tag very annoying/unprofessional... I dunno, I've used it a couple times, but I guess if there's too much motion on a page it looks just as bad as too little. These tips are very good; I'm going to go play with that color scheme generator because the last layout I spat out has a terrible color scheme (plum and forest green ... I saw the combinaton on a shampoo bottle and thought it would look nice ) and this little tool looks very useful.
  24. I only think people should be allowed to sue if they can prove that the company withheld information about its effects- anyone who started smoking before people found out all the problems with cigarettes, for example. It's not fair to blame someone for using something when they didn't realize it was harmful, but its just as unfair to blame a company that puts warnings/nutritional info on the packaging. I think McDonalds will give you nutritional info if you ask when you order or go on their website; either way I think just about everyone knows how terrible it is for you anyways. As for 'hypnotic' advertising, I think that (as a society) we have to say no to whiny kids (Spoiling them is no good... of course I'm fairly spoiled myself ) and teach them critical thinking skills so that they understand that most commercials don't really say anything of importance. The downside to this is that they'll sit in front of the TV and point out logical loopholes in all the commercials- according to my parents this is quite annoying.
  25. I think I'm missing something here... perhaps other rural areas are different from the one I live in, or maybe I misunderstand what you mean by the word rural. Living in the country does not make one poor, and being poor does not make one computer illiterate either. My friend's parents, who are rural but not poor, are very intelligent people. They do not make their living in IT; they are farmers, yet they know more than the average user about PCs and programming. Myself, I am both rural and "poor" (I don't really think of myself as poor, although my family's income is well below average) yet I am taking a college-level programming class. I admit it is not the rule out here to have super-amazing-computer-skills, but neither are we computer-illiterate or less skilled than people who live in the city! Now that I'm done my undoubtedly-misplaced rant... I think Mark's idea is interesting, although I have a few suggestions to add. As he said, the barter system raises the problem of comparing value. But people enerlly know what their own services are worth. Think someone's prices are too high? Don't do business with them. People will pick fair prices for themselves once they realize that overpricing doesn't do them any good. So say the babysitter says her services are worth 5 points/hour, and you think computer repair is worth 10 points/hour (these are arbitrary btw, I dont work in comp repair or babysitting so I dont know what a fair value is for either). So you repair her computer and she now owes you 20 points, or 4 hours of babysitting. My second suggestion is probably a nobrainer but if I were to be using this system, I would want to be able to see two things at a glance: who I owe something to, and who owes me something. So a couple lists (one for positive [they owe me] and one for negative [debt]) showing how much is owed to each account I've done business with would be good. However, the success of any such system would greatly depend on what areas you're trying to target. Not to be harsh or anything, but this system would fail in my community- not because there's anything wrong with it but because we already have a way of doing favors to each other and getting repaid, and it is very flexible, doesnt require a computer, and can be converted for use anywhere in the world. In a third world country, this might work, but you would have to make sure that the people in that community have access to a computer and most likely, an internet/"community network" connection... I know there have been programs to provide computers to people in these areas but I don't know much about them.
