  1. Hi there, I had a bit of trouble setting up the wp-contact-form plugin for my wordpress blog that was hosted by freehostia. At first I was using the free package, so I couldn't send out any mail. I solved that by saving all messages to a directory, and password protecting it. When I updated to a payed package, I still couldn't send out any mail. It turned out that the From header had to be an existing email that I had registered with my freehostia account, and wp-contact-form used "From: <email-of-person@who-contacted.me>" I solved that by modifying the plugin, changing From to the administrator's email set in wp options, and putting the person's email as a Reply-To header. If anyone is interested in these modifications, check out my post here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I added a few more features, like user tracking too. Check it out!
  2. Hi there, I just made a plug-in that some of you might be interested in. See here for more details: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It automatically generates the Kontera Ad Code, which is configurable through the admin panel, and inserts it at the bottom of the blog. The advantage that it has over Rodney Shupe's Kontera ContentLinks / MIVA InLine Plugin[1] is that in my plug-in you can specify which posts to omit kontera ads from. I did this because PayPerPost requires you to remove any ads that will overlap the content of the post, and I got too tired of having to add the HTML code to do it every time. Feel free to mention it on your blog? Wink Cheers, Karol Krizka [1] http://www.shupe.ca/index.php?pagename=art-dynamicontext/
  3. While I was browsing around reddit.com yesterday, I found the following story about Bill Gates playing a game called Petals Around the Rose: http://www.borrett.id.au/computing/petals-bg.htm I have decided to try to figure out myself how to play it. It took my around 20 minutes to figure it out right. My main problem was that I was reading too much into the above article and making assumtions based on it. Has anyone ever heard of the game? If yes, how long did it take you to beat it? For those new to it, here is an online simulation of it: http://illuminations.nctm.org/Lesson.aspx?id=1865
  4. I disagree with AeonLan, I think it will increase the amount of users that come in. Some people might be bored and just say spam. Or webmins can post links to their sites to increase exposure to search engines.
  5. Am I the only one for who the thumbnails don't load?
  6. Short Answer: I think drugs are bad.Just go to your local downtown and look on the streets. All those homeless people you see there were drug addicts at one point. That's how they got there. Also I think that any kind of a smoking drug (ei: weed, and let's include cigarettes too) are the worst. This is because with needle things, you are the only one that damages your health. But with smoking, there is second hand smoke that travels around the air and can get into other non smokers, including me. With needles, it's only your health you are damaging and it's your choice. But with smoke you are also damaging my and other bystanders' health, something most of us don't want.
  7. It looks a bit like it's from the 1990's, like the color scheme. It is dark and with a lot of flashy, blinking bright colors. So it's not very professional. But I like the content very much. It is like a personal porfolio I suppose? Some place you can publish your projects. I wanted to make one of those for some time now, but never had the time.
  8. I suppose that other "updating" content would create the same effect? Like if you are hosting a forum, you can put a "recent posts" box with recent posts that are being updated. What do you think?
  9. I think that their interface is a bit bloated. First of all it uses flash for their graphs, so I can't see them from my laptop (which is running a 64bit installation of Linux). Also they have so many different ways to look at your statistics, that I dunno what to do. It's a bit confusing, so I end up using the "browser information" part to see how many new visitors came. But otherwise I like the service as I can add many different sites and even divide them into different groups (accounts). I just wish they simplified it a bit.
  10. For linux users there is something called the GMail FileSystem. It is a userspace program that uses the FUSE driver to mount one's gmail account like a normal filesystem. For more information go here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  11. I agree with owbussey, there is too much text for the front page. It makes it seem kinda unorgenized and unprofessional. Mainly the "last added" block on the side is very messy. I have trouble figuring out what it is actually saying. Kinda seems like one of those things some sites put up with random keywords just to get higher ranking on google . But I like the color scheme. Somehow it seems to me that it goes well with the whole "car" theme!
  12. I just remembered about a link I found on digg. It is the top 10 music videos by Weird Al, and White and Nerdy made it as #2!!! http://srobbin.com/blog/top-10-weird-al-videos/

    Info Bar

They are just using html frames. Basically it's a easy way to embed several pages in one. I don't really like them because they aren't very flexible and not all browsers support them, but you use them easly for simple sites. Here is a good tutorial about them: http://html.com/frames/
  14. Hello,I've been trying to convert my site back to php4 (I've been using php5 for some time before my host went down) so I can start hosting it on Xisto. But I've hit a roadblock and have no idea what is wrong. It seems to me that I will find another free php5 host before I fix it. But I've spent several hours accumulating credits here, so I don't want them to go to waste. So my question is, is there a planned php5 upgrade in the future?I've search for threads mentioning php5 on this forum and found one. The argument against upgrade presented there was that if one day Xisto upgrades it, many people's scripts will stop working. Yet that seems a bit stupid to me. Is Xisto going to keep php4 forever, just because some scripts use it and force people to develop in php4 for, just so they can host it for free? Another argument was that PHP5 is quite new and there might be quite a lot of bugs still in it. I do agree with that statement, because the thread I read this in was created 2-3 months after the first stable release. But it's been a year since so I think most of the worst bugs has been fixed. Also it's possible to run both php4 and php5 on a server. I do this on my laptop and I know a friend of mine who has a site with godaddy has the opinion to switching between php4 and 5 just by changing the file extension from php to php5. If anyone is interested in how to do this, I can google up some sites about it.I would like to hear the opinion of the admins and other users on this issue.
  15. I saw it on youbtube too! It's quite funny and characterizes many geeks I know (including myself) quite well. The only difference is that I don't collect figures and don't ride some weird stnding thingie (anybody know what they are called?).
  16. They didn't even notify the users that they were going somewhere, dp that wasn't very useful. And I had backups, kinda. I have the code for the webpage on my computer since that's where I programmed it. And I only hosted there 1 week, so didn't really have any users who's data to back up :)And about your question, I'll apply for hosted when I have more time. I have to convert it to PHP4, which will be some work because there seems to be a bug in passing variables by reference in that php version, because for some reason it dosn't work. So that'll take some time and I am quite busy with school now. So for now I'm just gonna be posting on the forum trying to get more credits for future.
  17. It looks a bit too clutered, like some old CMS (phpnuke?) I think there is too much info on the front page. But your new color theme looks good!
  18. Lol, I though exactly the same thing! THe skin should be changed, it looks too generic. But the organization of the forums is quite good. I hope you get more users and become an useful site! Good luck.
  19. Hello,Until a month ago I had my website hosted on i4host.net for free and they had a nice service. What I liked about them is that they had PHP5 installed. But then they had some really bad outage proglems. I could usually only axess my site one or 2 hours a day, yet somehow my cron jobs run without any problems because I was getting daily emails about their results. But one day they stopped, so I went to check i4host.net to see if they had some problems. But I couldn't access them, nor could I in couple of days. Somehow they just dissapeared off the internet earth. Does anyone know what happened to them or if they will be coming back? For now I'll stick with Xisto, because you guys seem to offer some good service, but sadly I'll have to convert my site back to PHP4.
  20. There are a lot of thinks that you can play around with on Linux! Just search the web, but here are some ideas. Look around the WIKI or the forums for ideas, mainly the Tips and Tricks sections. Also if you have a fancy graphics card (I don't think you even need a fancy one, a simple intel one should do) then check out the beryl project. It is an fork of the compiz project started by novell. It allows one to take advantage of a 3D accelerated desktop that is availible with an extension for now, and in the next ubuntu release it will be built in. Some effects it can do that I like is expose like effect, shadows, transparency and wobbly windows. Other things to play around on linux are of course programming and app hunting. Check out the "Add/Remove Apps" menu item in the applications menu to see if you find anything useful there. Or go to GnomeFiles for even more applications. Let us know how your linux experience goes or if you discovered anything cool to do!
  21. I also use tor from time to time to get around bunch of IP bans, but haven't tried torpark yet. It looks like an interesting application to use on linux. I just use the tor proxy and connect through that on my laptop. It was easy to install since this is just ubuntu, so aptitude install tor did the trick . Also I don't want to switch to torpark because I like my browser (konqueror) more. And yeah, going through tor slows down your internet experience by quite a lot! That's why I have it usually off. Also there is even a little section in the menu that allows me to turn it off/on quickly. For those using konqueror it is Tools->HTML Settings->Enable/Disable Proxy. Quite a nifty trick .If anyone wants to know more about tor, there was a good article on it in the june 2006 edition of the linux magazine. There are other articles there about anonymous internet usage, like antsp2p, which is supposed to be an anonymous p2p application.
  22. Looks nice, but whatever you said about how you made it made no sense to me. I suck at photoshop. Btw, who is the woman in the picture?
  23. It's due in a couple of days so I will double check with the teacher later if I need to. I also checked wikipedia before, and didn't find it. But then different sites seem to have different lists. If I don't find any more examples and will need more to fill my quota of 10, then I'll check if it's a stylistic device. It'll be my back up for now.
  24. I have heard about this in the morning on the radio. I was really suprised to what happened, at first I though it was one of those stupid USA school shootings again, but this is different. People in a place that have done no wrong are being endangered for some weird reason. I heard that the shooter has something against young girls? Also I do agree it is quite nice of the to forgive. They keep by what they believe in even in such a bad time. I quite respect that.
  25. Hello,I have this assignment for school where I am supposed to go through a novel and find at least 10 different examples of stylistic devices used by the author. Right in the first page there is this bit about this killer lurking around a big conference and the author writes "And there was a good chance it would kill today." This is a good example of suspense, except I am not sure if suspense counts as a stylistic device. Does anyone know if it does?
