  1. Hi there, I had a bit of trouble setting up the wp-contact-form plugin for my wordpress blog that was hosted by freehostia. At first I was using the free package, so I couldn't send out any mail. I solved that by saving all messages to a directory, and password protecting it. When I updated to a payed package, I still couldn't send out any mail. It turned out that the From header had to be an existing email that I had registered with my freehostia account, and wp-contact-form used "From: <email-of-person@who-contacted.me>" I solved that by modifying the plugin, changing From to the administrator's email set in wp options, and putting the person's email as a Reply-To header. If anyone is interested in these modifications, check out my post here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I added a few more features, like user tracking too. Check it out!
  2. Hi there, I just made a plug-in that some of you might be interested in. See here for more details: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It automatically generates the Kontera Ad Code, which is configurable through the admin panel, and inserts it at the bottom of the blog. The advantage that it has over Rodney Shupe's Kontera ContentLinks / MIVA InLine Plugin[1] is that in my plug-in you can specify which posts to omit kontera ads from. I did this because PayPerPost requires you to remove any ads that will overlap the content of the post, and I got too tired of having to add the HTML code to do it every time. Feel free to mention it on your blog? Wink Cheers, Karol Krizka [1] http://www.shupe.ca/index.php?pagename=art-dynamicontext/
  3. While I was browsing around reddit.com yesterday, I found the following story about Bill Gates playing a game called Petals Around the Rose: http://www.borrett.id.au/computing/petals-bg.htm I have decided to try to figure out myself how to play it. It took my around 20 minutes to figure it out right. My main problem was that I was reading too much into the above article and making assumtions based on it. Has anyone ever heard of the game? If yes, how long did it take you to beat it? For those new to it, here is an online simulation of it: http://illuminations.nctm.org/Lesson.aspx?id=1865
  4. I disagree with AeonLan, I think it will increase the amount of users that come in. Some people might be bored and just say spam. Or webmins can post links to their sites to increase exposure to search engines.
  5. Am I the only one for who the thumbnails don't load?
  6. Short Answer: I think drugs are bad.Just go to your local downtown and look on the streets. All those homeless people you see there were drug addicts at one point. That's how they got there. Also I think that any kind of a smoking drug (ei: weed, and let's include cigarettes too) are the worst. This is because with needle things, you are the only one that damages your health. But with smoking, there is second hand smoke that travels around the air and can get into other non smokers, including me. With needles, it's only your health you are damaging and it's your choice. But with smoke you are also damaging my and other bystanders' health, something most of us don't want.
  7. It looks a bit like it's from the 1990's, like the color scheme. It is dark and with a lot of flashy, blinking bright colors. So it's not very professional. But I like the content very much. It is like a personal porfolio I suppose? Some place you can publish your projects. I wanted to make one of those for some time now, but never had the time.
  8. I suppose that other "updating" content would create the same effect? Like if you are hosting a forum, you can put a "recent posts" box with recent posts that are being updated. What do you think?
  9. I think that their interface is a bit bloated. First of all it uses flash for their graphs, so I can't see them from my laptop (which is running a 64bit installation of Linux). Also they have so many different ways to look at your statistics, that I dunno what to do. It's a bit confusing, so I end up using the "browser information" part to see how many new visitors came. But otherwise I like the service as I can add many different sites and even divide them into different groups (accounts). I just wish they simplified it a bit.
  10. For linux users there is something called the GMail FileSystem. It is a userspace program that uses the FUSE driver to mount one's gmail account like a normal filesystem. For more information go here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  11. I agree with owbussey, there is too much text for the front page. It makes it seem kinda unorgenized and unprofessional. Mainly the "last added" block on the side is very messy. I have trouble figuring out what it is actually saying. Kinda seems like one of those things some sites put up with random keywords just to get higher ranking on google . But I like the color scheme. Somehow it seems to me that it goes well with the whole "car" theme!
  12. I just remembered about a link I found on digg. It is the top 10 music videos by Weird Al, and White and Nerdy made it as #2!!! http://srobbin.com/blog/top-10-weird-al-videos/

They are just using html frames. Basically it's a easy way to embed several pages in one. I don't really like them because they aren't very flexible and not all browsers support them, but you use them easly for simple sites. Here is a good tutorial about them: http://html.com/frames/
  14. Hello,I've been trying to convert my site back to php4 (I've been using php5 for some time before my host went down) so I can start hosting it on Xisto. But I've hit a roadblock and have no idea what is wrong. It seems to me that I will find another free php5 host before I fix it. But I've spent several hours accumulating credits here, so I don't want them to go to waste. So my question is, is there a planned php5 upgrade in the future?I've search for threads mentioning php5 on this forum and found one. The argument against upgrade presented there was that if one day Xisto upgrades it, many people's scripts will stop working. Yet that seems a bit stupid to me. Is Xisto going to keep php4 forever, just because some scripts use it and force people to develop in php4 for, just so they can host it for free? Another argument was that PHP5 is quite new and there might be quite a lot of bugs still in it. I do agree with that statement, because the thread I read this in was created 2-3 months after the first stable release. But it's been a year since so I think most of the worst bugs has been fixed. Also it's possible to run both php4 and php5 on a server. I do this on my laptop and I know a friend of mine who has a site with godaddy has the opinion to switching between php4 and 5 just by changing the file extension from php to php5. If anyone is interested in how to do this, I can google up some sites about it.I would like to hear the opinion of the admins and other users on this issue.
  15. I saw it on youbtube too! It's quite funny and characterizes many geeks I know (including myself) quite well. The only difference is that I don't collect figures and don't ride some weird stnding thingie (anybody know what they are called?).
