Stop Spam Harvesters add a Honey Pot to your site
NilsC replied to NilsC's topic in Websites and Web Designing
They create a php page for you that you add to your website. It's not visible to humans and it have warnings in cleartex in case a user uses page source to get to the page, that is where all the legalese is that makes it legal On this page there is a email address that changes everytime a spider / bot collects it. The IP and other data are recorded in a database and if the email is used there will be a record of where and when it was collected. Since it's illegal to collect email addresses in a lot of places you can use <meta name="no-email-collection" value="[link to your terms]" /> the no collect meta tag and link to your TOS, place it on all your webpages that way good bot's stay away from the pages. A php script is created for you and you just have to upload it onto the server and place links to it on your webpages. Instructions come with it. The honeypot does the rest, you will have email addresses that are automaticly updated and tracked by the projects servers. Here is a link to the example honeypot http://www.projecthoneypot.org/honey_pot_example.php Nils -
solankyno1, we take every post seriously. We have one limitation, everyone working here are volunteers. Administrators and Moderators do this on their free time and with the amount of posts it can be hard to keep up. I was gone for 4 hours (had to sleep) and in the time I was gone there were 4 new pages of posts. There is no way I can read and check all of those posts and the Moderators read a lot of the posts and act on them. Again, the Moderators are volunteers and there will be times they come on just to post and maybe ask a question or have an opinion without reading all the posts and Moderate.Since this board is 24/7 access there will be times that there are no moderators or administrators here to solve whatever comes up. We are trying to get moderators from different time zones so we have coverage at any given time. There will still be times that there are no moderators here because a person may take a day or a week off.So in order for us to police the board we need help from everyone on the board. By pointing out a post in the shout box or reply to an unacceptable is not enough most of the time because the message may have gone off the bottom by the time we come back online. If users could report the post by clicking the report this button it would help us a lot. We as moderators will not let the person you reported know that you pulled the trigger on them. This would make our job a little easier and we could come and enjoy reading the posts here and not have to be full time baby sitters.Anytime subjects like this is brought up it show that we have a community here. Since we don't know each other except from here as an username and sometimes it hard to know what the reason is behind an issue. We are nameless faceless entities crossing like ships in the night. When you or someone else take the time to bring up a subject like this we have come a step closer and I feel it's my duty to answer as best as I can. I'm not always right and I may make mistakes or not see an issue but when it's brought to my attention I will do my best to correct it.I know it?s another speech but I urge everyone to let me know what to do to make this a better community and if you don?t feel like airing it out in a post. Send me a PM and I?ll answer you to the best of my knowledge and ability.Thank YouNils

I love all kind of Racing, road racing (SCCA), F1, Cart, stock-car (including NASCAR), dirt track, and Rally's)Since this is about NASCAR I just have to say that if you have never gone to a track to watch it's no way to explain it and you propably will not enjoy it. :angry:Nascar to US is like soccer to europe. I find soccer extremly boring... but if I say that to a soccer fan I made an enemy for life. :blink:Nils

Tossing A Few Questions Towards You about CSS ;)
NilsC replied to moonwitch1405241479's topic in Websites and Web Designing
That's kinda funny. I'm trying to create my website with CSS and It looks OK in everything but IE. IE6 I get an menu error (space glitch) and in IE5 none of the formats work and site liiks like one big list :)I'm not a big fan of IE but 95% of the browsers that come to the website we have at work are IE so I guess I still have to code for that. I wish IE could be compliant and up to date, it would make the code so much cleaner. :)Nils -

Taylor, you have to remove ")" from your URL it's http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ not http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/)/ Nils -
Darth Vivi, your account expired 37 days ago, it should say on top of the forum how many credits you are in the negative. Then you have to stay active and get 15 hosting credits for the starter package. So if you can't stay active what use is the website, if you are not online you don't maintain it.You have to stay active and show that you will participate to get your hosting package back. Then to keep it you will have to stay active because your hosting credits are reset to 3 (or 5) when you recive the hosting. 1 hosting credit = 24 hours of inactivity before your account is suspended again.Nils

If you have gmail invites you can add them to this post http://forums.xisto.com/topic/1557-gmail-invite-exchange-the-only-thread-valid/ All other gmail posts are or will be closed as we find them. Any gmail invites posted in any other forum will be considered spam since you did not take the time to read the rules. Don't come and ask for your "Hosting credits" back when you loose them because of this. You will loose hosting Credits and receive a warning for spam. Than you Nils

Free Gmail Invites! (50 Of Em!) Want a Gmail invite????
NilsC replied to hars53's topic in The Internet
Everyone has a ton of gmail invites. Don't post any more gmail invites.. *** POST CLOSED *** -
I have to say that the Moderators are doing their jobs and it's not babysitting the members. solyanko1 is right, could we do a better job. Yes we could and we are working on it. One thing that was not mentioned here is the other hosting company we have that are catering to members with very high expectations and good knowledge of computers, programming and web design. So for users who have a problem with the tone here and would like more professional (no pun intended) posts and attitude, try Xisto.com and you will get the same quality hosting but a more and I quote: So there are options out there and different levels of participating. Nils I JUST PINNED THIS TOPIC - IF YOU ARE A MODERATOR - MAYBE YOU READ THIS.

Anytime you edit the registry you can render your computer inoperable. Always backup your registry before you make any changes. Read how to backup and add to registry from a command prompt before you start playing with settings. If you make the wrong change and your computer will not start you can restore the registry from a bot disk using command line The registry tweak posted above here is only changing the timeout setting. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="20000"This is the default setting in XPP. You can edit thet number down until you see a marked increase in shutdown speed. One drawback is if you have "write-behind caching enabled", this not turned off by default so anything stored in cache will be lost if you change the setting to low without disabling "write-behind cache" Nils

I Support Linux! the anti-microsoft-topic
NilsC replied to tillus's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Dyth, I just deleted your post, copy and paste a whole article so you can get hosting credits is not acceptable and next time it will get you banned. just because you put a link to the article don't make it acceptable. You can use links to reference and support your points not to justify lazyness.Nils -

Setting Up Anonymous Ftp Access Im not sure how this is done...
NilsC replied to biscuitrat's topic in Web Hosting Support
I'm not sure if I understand your question, I have answered it as far as I understand. They have access to their own space only.Your space is "yourspace.astahost.com"then you give your buddy some space called "buddy1.yourspace.trap17.com"now you create a ftp account called "ftp.buddy1.yourspace.trap17.com"If you created a folder in "yourspace.trap17.com/buddy1" then you did not create a subdomain, you created a "Folder"Nils -
Again No Databases? Are there any work on host?
NilsC replied to Someone's topic in Web Hosting Support
Most of the times this issue are right after a lot of new users are granted hosting. Some go on and start opening and running anything and everything they have access to including scripts that are faulty and are hogging the server.90% of the time the issues is a process running that are not teminating correctly and it will eat up cpu cycles and not terminate and let other users requests run. When it happens the server may have to be restarted to clear and the user may be terminated for abusing the resources. The servers can handle all accouns hosted with no problem, if we all play by the rules.Nils -
10 Or 50 Posts? thats what is says on the main page...
NilsC replied to friso's topic in Web Hosting Support
The requirements are changed so 10 hosting credits is the starte package and 50 hosting credis is the default package. The old way was 10 and 50 posts, we did away with that because people complained about the minimum post length etc. Now we look at the quality and the quantity of a post if a user can say it in a sentence that's OK, but if there is a lot of "I agreee" "I disagree" and stupid posts that are just posted to get the count up... delete the post after you warn the user. When you delete the post hosting credits are removed.Don't delete the first post in any tread, set it invisible and let me know, I have to manually remove hosting credits from the first post in a tread. :)Great job today, thanks everyone for helping out. :)Nils -
10 Or 50 Posts? thats what is says on the main page...
NilsC replied to friso's topic in Web Hosting Support
I'll update it where needed,10 hosting credits or 50 hosting credits...Nils -
FireStorm~, you in actuality have -11 hosting credits because I suspended your posting rights and I deducted hosting credits from the Copy Paste job you did. The only way you can get your hosting back and your account unsuspended is to talk to OpaQue and explain why you did it and what you will do to stay on the straight and narrow road. If you (or anyone else reading this post) don't read the rules here or the TOS you will be suprised when your hosting accounts are deleted. It states that "spam" or Plagiarism will get your account deleted. Nils

the next step is to check your computer for spyware / malware. Those can change your settings and add sites to point to localhost in your HOSTS file, that happens when they hook your login from that computer, then they have access to your cpanel and they lock you out.You should use your dads computer and change your password. and make sure your email is not changed.Nils

I can't see how you don't get looged onto cPanel. I started IE on my computer to test (XPP) and I set all the security settings to the highest level, disabled active-X, disabled Java, Disabled Scripts, Disabled iframe... I disabled anything I could disable. I then cleared out cookies and history. I logged back in with no problem.Next step if you can't rule out your IE, reset all IE security settings to default and try again. If you still can't conect, do you have a firewall and did you block the cPanel by accident? If you use a firewall let me know what version and I or someone else may be able to help you configure it.Nils

Spyware And Adware Removal What software do you use?
NilsC replied to kc8yff's topic in Computer Networks
It depends on what I'm trying to remove. On a brand new computer I setup a firewall and add Spybot S&D and AdAwareSE and show the user how to use them. Then I make sure they have a working Antivirus software and the computer is good for now. All patches should be installed and automatic update should be turned on with the option for user to chose when to install a new patch turned on. If I start working on a computer with an infection, spyware / adware or a Trojan on it For WinXP or WinME, it is advised that you turn off "System Restore" before proceeding with any viral scan. This will reduce the time required to scan a system. How To Disable System Restore in WinXP: For WinXP, right click on "My Computer" --> select "Properties" --> select the "System Restore" tab --> check the "Turn off System Restore" option. How To Disable System Restore in WinME: For WinME, right click on "My Computer" --> select "Properties" --> select the "Performance" tab --> check the "Disable System Restore" option Next you will use an antivirus that can be run from a CD I use the "Public AntiVirus CD v. 3.82" that can be downloaded for free here: http://nyquil-kid.dyndns.org/ This includes instruction on how to use and create the CD. You can get the MD5 checksum here and dowload instructions for Spybot S&D and AdAware. I start with Spybot S&D, then AdAwareSE and after scanning and the computer comes up clean I bot it with an antivirus boot disk to scan for viruses (second time). Next step after this is to make sure there are no other hidden malware / spyware. I use About:Buster. This program removes the Home Search Assistant. (no Link) and there is a great article here for those who would like to learn more about protecting / cleaning the computer: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ From here you can download a custom HOSTS file and some batch files used to to turn HOSTS file editing on and off. Read up on it before you attempt this so you know what you are doing. I add activeX blocklists to the registry Spyware blocking tool you can read up on it there. You can get CWShredder here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ This tool will find and destroy all traces of the CoolWebSearch (CWS) hijacker on your system. This includes: * Redirections to CoolWebSearch related pages * Redirections when mistyping URLs * Redirections when visiting Google * Enormous IE slowdowns when typing * IE start page/search page changing on reboot * Sites in the IE Trusted Zone you didn't add * Popups in Google and Yahoo when searching * Errors at startup mentioning WIN.INI or IEDLL.EXE * Unable to access antispyware tools or sites HijackThis Written by Merijn - merijn@spywareinfo.com http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I use LSP-Fix to fix winsock2 errors (no link) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ https://www.grc.com/default.htm Scroll down to the three musketeers and read up on how to use them to shut down the messenger service (Not IM) and shut down DCOM and how to turn off "Plug and Pray" (also know as Plug and Play) This is some of the tools I use when cleaning out computers, there are more but they are for the most part command line utilities and they can render a computer useless if you use them wrong.. They are last resort tools to clean BIOS (almost never successful), Boot sector and FAT table. Nils -
Sounds like more than one problem brewing here. This can be due to a MB failure or cpu failure also. The computer may have a virus on thevBIOS chip. This could happen with XPH and a M$ rootkit. If there is a virus on the BIOS chip the computer is scrap... we call it a boat anchor here :)bsod can be cause by HW failure and it may look like a software failure. You said her aDSL modem was fried, did it get hit by lightning? or did it get infected with a virus? Lightning can fry the aDSL modem and if hard wired to the computer with a cat5 cable can fry computer components there also. New graphics card may be needed, not for the sound but for the monitor.. :)She should bring it to a reputable repair shop so they can put it on a scope to see if there are any loose or burned out electronics. They can see if the power supply is bad or if there are burned out / broken parts in the computer.Tell your friend to sign on here and we'll work with her fixing it.Nils

The problems is a setting in your computer. If you can access the cPanel from one computer on your home network then you can access the cPanel from any other computer with internet access. What may be missing is a setting in your IE that are preventing you from accessing the website. Check the permissions and compare the 2 computers settings, if you are to strict you will not connect.OS = Operating System so you can be on XP and your dad on 98 or you can have a xpp and a xph etc... I asked that so we are comparing apples to apples :DNils
