Have never really paid much attention to desktop suites, but built my first linux box and threw Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/ onto the computer and it's awsome. I don't see why all small/mid size companies and individuals would ever buy MS again. I'm just as happy to download a better office suite for free than to buy one for $200. Really getting sick of microsoft.....

I think the thing most people do not understand is that these things are going to happen. These nuclear subs are running around the clock 24x7 and you never hear about anything. I mean, this and the soviet one that "sank" a few years back ... that was about it. So that's kind of the price you pay for having this kind of equipment to ensure your country (and your friends countries) remain safe.

Not only happening on the internet, folks. I was recently in Vietnam, and doing a bit of shopping at a CD/DVD store (which was obviously ripped material), and the police raided it. I figured, OK, I'll go down the street to the other store, and voila, they were raiding that one too. All 6 were being raided at the same time.No doubt they were doing this because of pressure put on them by the US govt. Same goes for China, etc. Pretty soon there will be no safe-havens. (

Hello. I have an HTML frameset, with, lets say 2 frames. Frame A and Frame B. The user goes and navigates around, then makes an update within frame B, which in turn requires a refresh of frame A. Does anyone know how to do this? Prefereably I would like to do it in HTML, then if not possible, in JavaScript, then if not possible Perl.But I have a feeling it's doable in JS, but can't work out exactly the heirarchy for the page within a frame. Any ideas?? Thanks.

They'd better be doing some pretty incredible things ... it's market cap is 50Billion, which is pretty crazy. Now, to give you a feel for where that is ... Microsoft is appx 250 billion, and General Motors is about 20 billion.I wouldn't buy a share of google. it's a good search engine, but other than that, not sure what it's good for, and it's certainly not worth more than General Motors.

i travel a lot, and spend months at a time in spanish speaking countries - mostly s. america and spain, i don't have a good hold on the language yet, but i find i make big improvements when i think to myself in spanish, all the time. walk outside and it's hot as hell, i tell myself it's hot in spanish. also, i send emails to my friends in mexico in spanish ... that helps as well.good luck ... and depending where you are going in spain, you will learn fast because you will have no choice!!! there's lot more english in asia / s. america than in spain!!! hahaha. i'll never forget my first train ticket there ... dos billets por destino pampalona a ocho horas manana de la manana. i got a big smile from the guy, and 2 tickets to pampalona at 8:00 the next morning!

what usually happens to me is there are 2 people directly behind me in the plane and they start talking and talking and talking and it's like they're from the same hometown and this is so incredible, and their jobs and on and on!!! and you can't just turn around and tell them to shut the *$(# up ... well i guess you could, but that'd make them even louder!!! i find that to be extremely annoying.

i've always countered this kind of problem by trying to make gifts ... it makes you be creative, it's fun, and it beats the hell out of going to a department store or mall to get something. that's a nightmare... so make someone a birdhouse, or a picture book, or whatever ... it's fun, and it's a gift they don't put into a shed and forget about. it's a hell of a lot cheaper too.

oh but it's not only american idol, it's propogated itself all around the world!! there's european idol, australian idol, etc etc.i was traveling in some far corner of cambodia, and i saw a singing competition... cambodian style. it was absolutely hilarious ... with background girls doing the "wave" and some spiffed out bloke trying to sing.

having a bit of a problem...i have 1 frameset with 2 frames: frame A and frame B. you click a button in frame B, it inserts some stuff into a database, then i want it to refresh/reload frame A. Is this even a possibility? theres not a lot on the web about it. i'm keen to do this with perl, but would be happy to do with javascript as well. thanks for any help!!

i think your talking about something else, but you know that icon in .. say ... the firefox browser before the url, or when you bookmark a webpage, in favorites, it's a specific icon? how do you do that? it must be something with HTML tag or something, but can't find it anywhere. thanks.

agreed. i'm not that old - i'm 28, but i guess i was lucky, and am at a lucky age. when i was a kid i would, the big excitement was when i got a bike, and i'd play in outside, building forts, etc. and now kids are more into computers and videos, i think they're missing out on their childhood. though i could be wrong.

i'm not surprised. in fact, it's not only happening in the effeted areas, it's happening all over the world. like in australia, and i'm sure many other places, they've been catching people asking for donations who are not affiliated with any groups - and they're not giving the money. luckily the police are busting these people. it's hard to tell whether they're being honest, when they walk up to you. i gave a guy $2 and saw him getting busted an hour later... i hope the money gets there.

my big new years resolution is to get myself organized, and now i'm looking at a few pretty good tools from http://sourceforge.net/ - one is netoffice and the other is track+. definately have a look at them, although they're a bit like a groupware project management tools, it's pretty easy to use them on your own.

yep the latest news here is that indonesia has itself now reported over 26,000 dead ... so basically that means the death toll will be around 40,000 by the time all's said and done. unbelievable. it's nature, i guess, the way things work out. sometimes you forget how powerful the earth really is.

appears your trying out the same things i was ... definately go to the w3cschool and find the xml/xslt sections ... it's actually quite good. the other thing i just find is xslt works much different for IE and netscape/mozilla/etc. i eventually abandoned this because my audience is not just IE. i really don't like it ... it's like we're back 10 yrs ago where you have to do browser test and re-program for diff types (

just starting to look into php right now, but i've delayed for quite a while just cause i'm comfortable with perl / cgi. so with perl, and i assume it's very similar to php, simply print out what html you want through your script ... ie:<frameset> <frame name=blah target=blah2></frameset>you simply achive this with print "<frameset><frame name=blah target=blah2></frameset>" ;maybe there's fancy way of doing it, but doesn't matter. ie print br; = print <br>

wasnt only india here. though they were hit pretty hard. its hard realizing exactly what the impact of this is. they say now its going to be around 11,000 people dead. you cant really comprehend that amount of people to die. reminds me of the earthquake in m?xico a few years ago where 25,000 people died. also reminds me of the tsunami in alaska 50 yrs ago.

US 8/10Australia 7/10i live in australia now for 8 months, but from the US. so i'd say that i feel a hell of a lot safer here in australia ... but australia's got quite a bit more thugs than i thought there'd me ... like always wanting to pick a fight at night, etc. nothing like in the US though, where you can get shot for walking down the wrong street (i lived in philly for 2 yrs!)

if you are thinking the death penalty is a really great thing, read the book "the chamber" by john grisham. i guarantee this will change your opinion. i still believe that the death penalty is a good thing, so long as it's done correctly. in some countries, you receive the death penalty for stealing (ie safrica), in this case it's a nightmare situation, people have to steal to live, and it's game over for the theif if they're caught, or the people who are trying to catch them. remember, it's no applied everywhere like it is in the US.

i remember my first atari ... i loved that old thing, so simple and good. now, with a playstation and all, its good graphics and everything, but it takes forever to learn. guess im an old timer now, but that atari was great. games like pitfall, pacman, pong, etc. those were the good old days.

oh this is really cool. sendsmsnow is fantastic, was looking for a page like this. for example in australia, it costs money to send an sms (ie you have 100/free a month), .05 for each after that, but there's not a website from the local providers to send the sms. right now i get this msg with sendsmsnow:We do not support any networks in Australia at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience. Australia sucks in this respect, there's not a lot of free stuff.

i'm not a unix/linux/etc freak, but i've used both of them before, and i know no difference. that said, my view is that linux is a flavor of vanilla unix. kind of like HP's unix is a bit different than IBMs unix (ie AIX). quite honestly, i can't see how anyone could hate unix and love linux - just isn't logical unless you are totally into like 8086 architecture's on such a detail. i can understand a unix person hating windows ... not the other way aruond.corporations going towards linux more, regularly go with other flavors due to support arranngements for software packages, etc with big vendors - ie IBM.
