  1. a couple reasons to fling IE into a cowfield: - the only reason it has the market share is that the illerterates who use it dont know that anything else exists - it comes with windows, which for some reason comes with most computers these days - also because people are too stupid to know about anything else. - IE makes my job hell - I'm a webdesigner - IE is worse on the security front, as nobody else but MS can change anything about it. (Isn't Opera going open source?) - IE is mainstream, and since we have established earlier in the thread that mainstream sucks, then obviously IE sucks. - IE steals ideas - just have a look at IE 7. Nobody cares who originally started tabbed browsing; IE did not have it untill IE 7 beta 1, so screw IE. (think it was Opera that started tabs, wasn't it) - IE cannot get even basic layout right (cellspacing is freaky) - IE does not do proper CSS... just sucks at some of it... (X:hover sometimes freaks out at random places) - IE has nothing that Firefox Opera and Netscape have - while the latter definitely have things that IE does not... - IE never gets people making plugins for it (just because it's not worth it), while Firefox especially has hundreds of them. (fireFTP being my personal fav) - MS earns money for IE, money they invest in those huge banners everywhere (near me, anyways) - I think the most reacent one is about outlook/pocket PC compatibility (who uses them anyways??) - MS makes bad things like MS Office and makes you pay for them when you can get things that do the same things better for free (such as Open Office). You obviously dont want to support that kind of cheating, do you?!?! - Basically, people are brainwashed into thinking that IE is worth anything. It is slower that all browsers I have tried (other that Netcape 8 during lag) - try Opera before saying IE is fast. Just give IE hell and get something worth your time. - IE has no PNG transparency compatability. This is the worst offence to the web that M$ could commit (other that cheating our a**es off, which they do anyways) Thanks. About the pages that only work in IE, anybody could make things that only work in any other browser, on any specific platform from any specific country (hence the US government wanting to control the Internet - good luck, loosers). Its just a matter of whether or not the designers think at all when they make things that determines what the user sees in a particular browser. So ditch IE. To all FF lovers, have a good laugh: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  2. Just gets so annoying when you see them messing up in stupid programs... That *** couldnt get Reader to close full screen (which he did not even know existed in Reader)... And "open the internet" by clicking the IE icon? It's like please, I know you give me my grade, mister, but do you actually get paid for doing this? What would you do without your nastly little GUI server tool? Are you an intelligent being? I sometimes just have to laugh... Me and one other person actually know how to get around without a GUI - and the ones who know that that means - in both linux and win, and this guy thinks he is teaching us? Get real...
  3. Computer classes at my school are deadly... the teacher is a total microsoft freak, so he does not really know much else - at least as far as I know - and the course summary was that we were going to learn to use real useful programs such as word, powerpoint and exel... the crappiest programs I can think of... almost... I bet I know more about that guy in webdesign, too... They do not even have PHP on the server! That place bought msserver, bought it. It is really stupid what people nowadays will do. People seriously need to get over their "you get what you pay for notions"... That just does not work in software anymore... anyways, it seems a lot of people here hate their tech admin at school... are they just naturally obnoctious or what?
  4. PHP works great for a photogallery handler once you know the basics you just get firing You needn't bother getting a book though - tizag.com has a great PHP guide, and somewhere down the line you get to a function that lets you get all the files in the folder and display them. Or perhaps that was from somewhere else.... anyways: $user_space = "./data/images/gallery/"; /*Whatever folder the images are in. The only things that should be in this folder are the images you want displayed in the gallery.*/ if ($handle = opendir($user_space)) { $total= count(glob($user_space)); /* Loop over the directory, returing new filename every time.*/ while (false !== ($file = readdir($handle))) { if (strpos($file,'.') != '0'){ #this is so that the current folder, '.' and parent directory, '..' do not show. $file_path = $user_space.$file; echo "<img height=\"100\" width=\"100\" alt=\"I took this photo!\" scr=\"".$file_path."\"><br> \n"; #You will want to change this to suit you needs :P } }closedir($handle);} I you are new to php, this will probably seem a little overwhelming, but just skim through the tizag tut and you should be fine... Remember to escape HTML when using 'echo' in php by adding '\' in front of double and sigle quotes and backslashes... Keep up the good work
  5. Played RS for a while, never really cared all that much, and never got over lvl 65.I find it hard to imagine that people actually devote themselves to that game, as if it is actually a real-life situation. I mean "go get tortured in runescape hell by lvl 162 demons"? WT*? "I kick ur a** so bad in Runescape"?? same thing? what is a runescpe account going to do to me? Scam my imaginary bank account?I dont care what level some a** got to, and you can stop ruining other people's lives by showing them runescape. Then again, they will probably get bored after a while anyways...
  6. I player Runescape for a while - it was the thing to do, according to the lads at school. It was an ok game to start with; later on it just got too big. It wasn't just the boredom of the game that put me off, it was the people on it that really got on my nerves... Stupid little newbish idiots thinking they knew things... I actually got into some conversations with wanna-be webdesigners... it was ugly...Fully appreciate the creation of a vent about Runescape, even if I don't have much steam left to waste on it :)Still, cant believe I wasted time on that ####...
  7. Like what you say about the learning effect I think I understand what you are looking for, have a little try with mysql_fetch_array(), you just have to structure things a little... good explanation at tizag.com. Hope that's what you're looking for
  8. What I really hate about IE is that it cannot display even the simplest things corrctly. Tables, for example, seem to have the "cellspacing" set to 20, even when specified 0. This means that layouts look much better in FF than IE. It is definitely slower than both FF and Opera, and IT IS NOT OPEN SOURCE! It does not run on Linux, they are not doing much for Mac, and so it will soon be stagnating. In the advertisements for IE 7 they are basically saying that they have come up with tons of new browsing tools and add-ons. They have listed Flash Player under their add-ons!! Quoting the Microsoft page: "The new look maximizes the area of the screen that displays the webpage while reducing intrusive toolbars." Then you go to MSN.com and get told that the MSN toolbar is better than ever... The interface is awful, with shiny bars everywhere, they have adopted the tabbing system that FF, Opera and Netscape have had for years, even the favicon on the tab - and all under Microsoft's name. Just cause Firefox, Netscape and Opera are free doesnt mean they suck. It is time to get rid of the old-timer's notion that you get what you pay for - this no longer applies on the Web. Volounteers that work part time can produce better things than full-time emplyees sitting in their crummy little offices in Seatle. Mirosoft is no longer the ideal "american dream" company, if indeed it ever was. Microsoft is corrupt capitalism, having no honour, and the only way they can fix bugs now is add thousands of lines of bulky code to their huge files. Lucky for them that CPUs keep getting better! Don't MS freaks realise that a millions of people over the world with different inputs, ideas, visions and backgrounds can work much better that people stagnating in offices all day? Have americans grown so biased towards foreign products that they will only accept things made by "true american" companies? Say godbye to the millions of imported TVs, all the PS3s you were waiting for! I will not go into the other greviences of MS, as they do not fall under this topic, yet I will take the space to say that MS has been ruining markets for as long as it has existed. From copying the Apple in the beginning, they have moved into any market that looked profitable, crashed it, and drawn out again. The XBox is one of the more recent examples - why couldnt they just leave Nintendo and Sony to it? Though Internet Explorer was among the first browsers, it was left behind by Mozilla, which then became Mozilla Firefox. I have no knowledge of who copied who during the early stages of advanced browsing, and I do not need to know. All I need to know is that IE was left behind severely - to a point that it appears that they have literally copied the source from Firefox and mutilated the GUI to make it seem more like a real Microsoft product. Perhaps they also made a couple loops so that they could install keyloggers on our machines aswell? How would I know? Nobody outside Microsoft has ever seen the source - not even civil authorities have been allowed to verify IE for malicious script! Please people, there is a reason to stay away from Microsoft, though you may not realise it now. But at the end of the day, we like what we are used to, so there is really no point in trying to convince anyone...
  9. If anyone else ever has problems with their Windows running PC, do as terminal2k said - get a linux live CD. It works like a dream, not a nighmare, contrary to popular belief.
  10. First in the family was some old thing that I dont even know what is called... I do remember that we had another shortly after that - I must have been around three - which ran windows 3.1... Arn't these things amazing, how it has changed so freaking quick over the years? At least the one I have now does not bleep every time I hit a key. I miss SkiFree, however...
  11. I dont really care - so long as it does what I want it to do efficiantly, that's fine by me. Have a Dell myself, however - company deal. The only thing I am a bit annoyed about is the graphics card, though it is a rather old model, 510m laptop. If I ever actually buy my own computer I think it will be an Acer - they have a good reputation and from what I have seen make pretty powerful laptops.
  12. as was mentioned early in this thread, and later on, computers take quite a lot of energy to operate. This is not just a matter of paying the bill - it is also about the environment. It may seem a little weird, but just think of all the power one computer - especially running a monster like windows - uses in one day, then one week, one month and finally a year. That's quite a bit. Now multiply that by a couple million. That would be the amount of energy saved by americans who are guzzling fuel yet complaining about high petrol prices.Just think about it...
  13. Everybody seems to like Google Adds - I approve! sice they are costomisable and only text, it really does make them look nice on almost any page. The best example I have seen is tizag.com. Go Google, and as you say - "...hopefuly they will all learn from Google and make it like that!"
  14. I have heard about frontpage, though I stay away from it due to my bias against Microsoft - and the fact that I run Linux . I use ZDE, which I guess is the same sort of thing. A good site that I used a little when learning HTML is http://www.echoecho.com/htmlbasics.htm, which has a pretty good explaination. Later I also discovered http://www.tizag.com/, which is a real good place not only for HTML but for other languages aswell... Good luck
  15. Agreed, I find it strange how the people at MSN have made a good stab at creating a monopoly out of their "wonderful" (cough) products - both messenger and hotmail... could rant and rave for ages bout that... But anyways, I would say that the best alternative to Hotmail is Gmail, though you doo need an invitation - and I understand that it is hard to change usernames - getting everybody else to update, and so on. I would say make a Gmail account and tell new people the Gmail address instead. In my experience you just gradually switch to a Gmail-loving person
