I am installing Apache 2 on Ubuntu Linux 6.06 (downloaded appropriate binary), and have followed the instructions from several places, including apach.org... I have got to the point where it says to enter make, just after the ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2, where I also added --enable-mods-shared=most, for the common options. That all went fine, took a little while, then when it's done I am supposed to enter make, I presume to gather up all the newly created files. This command just does not exist. returned bash error and it is not in the manual. What have I done wrong? Thanks in advance, >elrohir

they are definitely bigger now, yes - but in 20, 30 years, who knows. Technology will have advanced quite a bit by then, and mebbe google wil outgrow them when people start realising what a messed up company microsoft is. that will probably be shortly after the Vista official release... something like what happened when people found out that XP was a bunch of *, only worse, maybe?

don't do that! Stuff linux on it - ubuntu.com, you have to create an account, but it's all free, and has worked wonders on my Dell Inspiron 510M. I didn't have that many problems (luckily, cause service is impossible to get here!), but the fan was freaking out, and it allways seemed WAY too warm. Ubuntu Linux is smooth, no problems there, though it takes a couple weeks before the CDs arrive (especially if you live back of beyond), or you can download the appropriate image file. If in doubt, dual boot. I know it seems scary, but hell, it works...

one thing to add about the oil price increase is that it isn't really all that surprising that they have gone up in the US. Think about all the things in Iraq that use "gas". Not just fighters - think of all the stuff that is being lugged in and out of iraq. It's crazy! obiously the prices are going to go up if there is more of it used. To TerraNova, who thinks that oil prices in Europe are high: I case you hadn't noticed, Europe is not one country (in a similar way that the US is not America, though you like to think you represent two continents). Since Europe is not a single country, things are different from country to country - including oil prices. So it's hard to say "European prices". Also, I find it ironic that you, as people from the US, complain about high oil prices when you are the nation that uses the most per person. If you're going to think SUVs are cool, then you had better all prepare for the consequences. Not to say that all people in the US waste too much energy...

Google runs on 10 000 low-end linux machines all over the world. About schools using MACs, I must be honest and say I have never seen more than one MAC in a school at one time. my old school had win 98, I swapped last year and now use win XP at school _puke_ we are "learning" to use programs such as word, exel, PP and other such programs "that might be useful to know about when doing homework". As if we havent been doing it on "word" (aka Open Office for me) for years... but that has nothing to do with google...

interesting point, I had never thought that way. the thing is that we should be seeing that already, then. Saudi is no longer letting loose the precise figures of the oil in their reseviors, though they claim that there is still twice as much left as they have already gotten out. We know, however, that they have to pump down several billion litres a day to get oil out - proof that the levels in the resevoirs are declining. Norway, the second largest oil exporter after Saudi, is already saving the profits of the oil industry against the day when the main export will no longer be profitable - "Oljefondet" - and the latest estimate for the date when oil will no longer be profitable is 40-50 years from now. After that, there will of course still be the "tar" left, but it will not be as beneficial. India and China's consumptions have doubled over the last ten years, and it is predicted that they will do so again over the next fifteen. And they are not even the nations that use the most oil per person - sorry guys, but that's the US. So, consumption is rising, production is starting to decline. When do you think we will start seeing these "earthquakes, tsunamis and continent slides"? heh, don't mean to sound accusing, just wondering. It would be nice to give the Earth a rest from humanity - we'll just go extinct, shall we?

Well, I have to say that all the people I know who have MACs love them - use Linux myself. I used Windows pretty much all the time I got to know computers well, and never realised how much simple pain I was giving myself. I would probably have bought a MAC, only they have a reputation of being rather expensive - and have been since MAC1. And untill recently you couldn't dual boot them - not that I would want windows to contaminate a new computer. I mean, from the small amout I have used MACs, they seemed pretty nice, though confusing at first. I didn't feel very much in control, but still, anything unix-based is better than windows... then came across a Ubuntu live CD, and my life began. But the MAC was nice, so I don't see your problem with MACs being slow - even Microsoft liked MAC OSX Tiger, and are now cloning it as Vista (which, by the way, means chicken in Latvian). If Microsoft can see something in it, then it must be OK, right?

I'm an outsider, so don't go calling me a partisan to democrats or whatever the hell the other sisde is. From what I have seen it is not just Bush himself that is the problem. It is the fact that the whole stucture in the US government thinks that it is invincible, and therefore has the power to do whatever it likes to whoever it likes. As soon as the planes were flown into world trade centre, killing your oh so innocent people, the US rises against Muslims, invades Afghanistan, and kills several times those killed on the 11th of September. Were those any less innocent than the ones the went down with the towers? Sure, a couple of them were, but I think that most of those who suffered from the invasion were already bad enough off without being bombed. And then came this Iraq business. The weapon inspectors never finished their jobs, but were removed before they could say that there were no nukes, nor any evidence of attempts at production. Bush invaded cause he was afraid of nukes? I don't think so. I'm by no means saying that Iraq would have been better off if they hadn't 'intervened', but why is it always the US that feels like terrorising the people they happen to feel like terroising? What's wrong with Iraq having nuclear weapons? Afraid they are going to use them up on the US? Well if they hadn't planned to, they will definitely feel like it now! In this one aspect I hope that the oil supplies will run out pretty swiftly - just to see what happens when people (and not just the US) figures out that their nice black "golden" syrup won't actually last forever. I have this feeling there might be a few less SUVs around in the US at least. But then you never know... I'm terribly sorry if this affends anyone, it's just my point of view (except from the fact that the oil will run out), and this is a vent... Just keep the fact that you're offended to your self, will you?

I think that even though you need a computer to use Google's stuff, and even though Microsoft has a lot of software, there are a couple things that help google something amazing.Not all computers run Windows - I have linuxNot all programs even run on windows.You need one computer, yet once you have that one computer, you can use Google's stuff as much as you like.I searched 7 times today, checked Gmail three times, saw tons of google ads, and I use the Jabber IM protocol for Gaim.Google is starting to get big on software as well, and their online spreadsheet (which MS is now happily making as well...) was quite a success, and people trust google, it's not as if they are going to download something bad. People against Microsoft - a growing number - for the most part don't mind or adore Google, and it is udisputedly the best search engine around. Yahoo is strange, they seem to like banners a bit too much...Google ads have been a great success all over, and Google must be making quite a bit on them not like the pop-ups advertising viagra... Gmail must be one of the best webmails around - enough storage, free POP access (unlike Hotmail, these days), and a layout that appeals - again, never seen a banner add on gmail. For those who didn't know it, Google is behind Blogger, so they are also offering hosting. Who knows what they will do next? a GOffice suit? or maybe 'G'OS (Google Operating System ?They are doing well, and though they have quite a way to go, Google might just catch up some day. Microsoft will probably be hit harder by the decreasing oil supplies, too

hmm... it might bew a smooth move to attract new converts, but it will also slightly increase the use of XP - for those heathens who download it onto their MACs...It is nice to know, though, that apple is starting to support other systems aswell...

what's the big deal about Vista anyways? It's just like mac osx tiger, runs like a cow and has the worst schemes I have seen since XP came out... Seriously guys, just screw microsoft and get some distro of Linux. I bet that within weeks of the official release of vista (cause they cant do it legally before that), the software for most linux distros will have incorporated any new file extensions. even if you don't have the latest and greatest in hardware, linux runs on pretty much the crappiest pcs around. running server on 98mb RAM, all is smooth, even as a desktop, while even win98 lags. not that I am saying I think everybody out there has 98mb RAM, but hardware was the concern in this topic... Download the ISOs from the various sites and get going - or get free CD (and I mean free, postage paid and all). Linux isnt as hard as rumour would have it, and in some ways a lot like Windows. When XP was first out it was all over the web about being the absolute best, and now vista is getting pretty much the same thing. Now that we all know that XP sucks, perhaps we can draw some conclusions to Vista?

Linux all the way The reason that I did not choose Dam Small Linux for the normal machine is that I didn't really like the interface all that much... Not my kind of thing. Ubuntu suits me fine, and I really appreciate the absence of that disgusting light blue they use in Windows

About Linux being slow, I am running DamnSmallLinux on a 98MB of RAM machine. I set it up as a server for HTTP, FTP and IRC protocols, and it is currently using 23 of thos 98 megs. This machine could barely suppot Windows at all, so I think that linux is a considerable improvement. On my laptop, I finished partitioning, then installed Ubuntu, and everything is fine once you get used to the layout and fonts. I still try pressing "Windows logo" + "M" to minimise things, however...The only complaint I have about Ubuntu is the network config for wireless. It takes ages to figure out how to do things, and the solutions seem rather random. For example, I had to configure everything in the "Network Settings" rather than terminal, then I found out (after several hours of sweating and swearing) that the solution was to not click OK to exit the "Network Settings" box, just exit as normal! Rather confusing if you ask me...

lol, doesnt have to be double quotes, if you insist - but I dont think that one line of code will greatly influence parsing time unless you have a freaking slow server and a 5 bps server. But say you have this huge page of code, with a switch on $page_id, and heredoc constructs for page output. Obviously, if you put the JS as plain html, it will appear on every single page which the switch concerns - This may not be very desirable, so you would then put it in PHP. Please, try to look from a different point of view. I am not saying that the result is any different from just plain html, or that PHP would be the one doing the printing. All I am saying - and ask Moldboy, who seems to understand my point - is that there is a benefit in putting it inside PHP. Even though PHP would not do the actual printing. Well, you cannot deny that echoing javascript works, and there is a reason to have it in PHP, but perhaps some people just code differently than others. From my point of view, it is either that or a die(), which I despise, and don't use... All I am saying is that PHP does not do clientside operations, so I doubt that there is a way of printing a page with PHP. If there was, it would probably do the exact same thing as the echo method - it would do it with a clientside script. I can see your point of view when you say that it would do the same thing, and I know that it would not be PHP doing the actual printing, but it is the best solution I know of. It is in PHP quotes, which was the aim, according to .hack//GU, so who cares what is doing the job, so long as it gets done? Do you have a better idea, Spectre? Agree to the choice of forum though
