I am trying trial versions of various anti-virus/security software and my first one was Windows Live OneCare 1.5. I think that it is a very good piece of software that should be included with Windows (for 90 days?) It works much better than the Windows Firewall and also has other functions in addition to the regular Anti-virus, Firewall and Spyware scanners. In my opinions, Windows Live OneCare is an excellent program for beginner computer users with the easy-to-use interface as well as visually attractive appearance. It also blocks un-verified (Microsoft's verification list) programs automatically and lets you choose if you allow it or not. The program includes a backup utility and tune-up, much like the Windows Live Safety Scanner. It also enables phishing protection in Internet Explorer 7 and checks for updates to Windows as well as other Microsoft programs frequently. Tune-up can indicate whether your computer is at risk (red), fair (yellow) or good (green). From personal experience, the tune-up feature works excellent and unobtrusively. What's annoying is that you may have to restart your computer otherwise it will turn red and say At Risk because updates could not be downloaded or checked. Also, ports are able to be blocked by the firewall, but blocking IP addresses (individual or range) cannot be done in this version. It may be included in the next version (2.0). :| On Wikipedia, it says that this firewall does not adhere to industrial firewall standards. I have no clue what that means but it seems to be working fine for me. Also, a Windows Live ID is required for this software to work. I think that shouldn't be a problem with I think that everyone has Windows Live Mail and would benefit with a Windows Live ID anyways. With other security software companies, as well as test results, Windows Live OneCare has been placed (near) last in the tests. It failed to detect 100% of viruses, and came in overall security with a disappointing 87%. Microsoft Security Team has stated that other security software companies will soon need to "catch up to them". We'll see about that with the updates and future releases coming out. This is the first software that I tested. I don't know if I'll buy it or not after 90 days. I am planning to test more software after the trial period. Tell me what you think about Windows Live OneCare!

Firefox Plugins For Web Developers
FirefoxRocks replied to delivi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Thanks for the list. It was really helpful in addition to the extensions and web development tools that I have installed currently.Instead of IE View, try using IE Tab instead, much faster because it doesn't need to up Internet Explorer.Out of this whole list, I only have #40 installed before seeing the list. :ph34r:I think I installed at least 7 or 8 from here. The SEO one wasn't that great. -
Google's Annual April Fools Pranks
FirefoxRocks replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I actually read it off of Wikipedia before I visited the Google website that day! I love the PigeonRank as well as Google MentalPlex! Here's a link to all Google April Fool's jokes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google%27s_hoaxes -
Data That Can Be Visualized Can't Be All Bad
FirefoxRocks replied to mtnbluet's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Unless it is statistical or mathematical data, why would we want to make it entertaining as well as educational? To jazz up "textual" data, just add pictures and colorful charts, put them into an XHTML file and view it in the browser. After all, color and free in the digital world ;)Visualizing data can make it confusing for some people and overwhelming. -
Preferred Forum System So many choices...its overwhelming
FirefoxRocks replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in Software
Thanks for the suggestions. Keep 'em coming! So now I have to choose between: 1. phpBB 2. Simple Machines Forum (not likely I will chose this one) 3. IceBB 4. MyBB (NOT - see below) 5. OvBB I'm saying no for MyBB because of this "latest news": There isn't ASP.NET support nor MSSQL with Microsoft Windows with Xisto. Also take a look at the screenshot! (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/). It is integrated directly into the server of Windows Vista (I think) and makes it no way for remote configuration of the forum! Bad idea. You also need to buy MyBB to get "additional" features. The Lite version (free) includes almost nothing substantial to be a forum. OvBB, I'm not too sure about. It looks...weird. It doesn't look like it has much support and a good community of users to discuss and talk about the open-source software. Final choices are either IceBB or phpBB. I don't think Simple Machines Forum would be a good choice for me. They are all easy to install. I don't like using Fantastico to install anything because it messed up a MySQL database the first time I tried installing Drupal. Actually uploading and installing the files is much easier. All 3 of these are equally easy to install. SMF has more options to configure. phpBB is most user-friendly and very good appearance. IceBB is also very user-friendly and has excellent appearance. -
Bad Request (invalid Hostname) Website not loading
FirefoxRocks replied to foolakadugie's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I think that that error message means that no DNS servers point an IP address to the domain name. It could be a sign that: 1. The domain name has no attributed server with it (the domain isn't set up on any server/not set up properly) 2. It is registered but it isn't parked or being used. 3. That domain is getting wiped off the Internet I did a WHOIS search for the domain name and came up with this information: So the domain has been registered for over 2 years and seems to be in use. I don't know what is going on. Perhaps you should contact your domain registrar for more information. -
I "improve and optimize" the code.First priority is valid XHTML, CSS and other standards.Second priority is accessibility and usability (navigation and stuff).Third priority is semantics.Fourth priority is speed.I don't do logos and other graphics. Do you want to give it a try to improve the code of your site?

Asp With Astahost How do you get it working?
FirefoxRocks replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in General Discussion
All right, I will consider dropping ASP use. I considered using ASP because it seemed easier to work with XML for it. I found this: ChiliASP. It can run on Linux servers apparently. I do use PHP for my site. In fact I am using PHP right now. ASP looks extremely hard and confusing to use (as by W3Schools). PHP is quite easy to learn. -
I am offering a code improvement, optimization, validation and accessibilities assessment exclusive to Xisto members. This is currently not offered at the Xisto side of the corporation because credits there are no use and I now rarely visit at Xisto anymore. Now there are some certain things that are not explained on the page so I will explain them here. 1. This code improvement service will only be offered to sites that DOES NOT contain racist, hatred, discriminative, criminal (warez/cracks), sexually explicit content, violent content or any other inappropriate content. I have the right to not "improve and optimize" any site. 2. Pages with more than 361 (X)HTML errors will not be "improved and optimized" because it takes more resources to process that. Even with the W3C + WDG Validator, it will still require a LOT of actual human time to correct the markup errors. Unless you are willing to pay more credits (which may be agreed upon before starting), I will not count that page towards your limit. 3. You are limited to 15 pages per user to be "improved and optimized". You can only do this once so choose wisely. 4. As of right now, only (X)HTML pages will be done. Pages containing server-side scripting will not be able to be done because this service is in "beta" period. Sorry about that. 5. Your pages must be hosted and accessible from MY computer/browser I'm sure this won't be a problem. 6. If new rules pop up, I will post them here in this topic. Please make 1 REPLY under this topic if you want to participate. The first person will be subject to some confusion (first time using Credit bank) but I hope everything goes well. Include!: Site Location Which pages (max 15) Which logos do you want (XHTML/CSS/SVG/WAI) Your email address Any extra details Price: 0.7 credits per page. This may change (depends on supply and demand). You MUST be hosted at Xisto because I will probably use PHP includes for stylesheets and HTTP header information. Any questions should be PMd to me. Best regards,

Asp With Astahost How do you get it working?
FirefoxRocks replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in General Discussion
Oh, that explains why the files didn't work. Any other GOOD hosts that support ASP? Or do I have to learn XSLT and XQuery? -
I am having trouble getting ASP to work on Xisto. I don't see any configuration and/or options about in cPanel and I don't know how to get it working.I tried copying an example from the W3Schools and uploading it to the server but it does thought it was a text/plain (Plain Text) file and just displayed the code instead of processing it.I'm not having any trouble with PHP, so I know that is working correctly. My example worked on the Windows 98 PWS 'practice' server so it should work on the real server. Can I get some help on how to enable it please?

Erm...so my "customer" transfers to the credit bank, and how will I get those credits if they are satisfied?1. How do I know the credits are in the bank?2. How do you figure out whose credits are for who if the username is BANK?3. How do I get the credits?4. Wouldn't credits get mixed up with the username BANK? Is there a bank manager?

HTML Tags Ever wondered what a HTML tag was
FirefoxRocks replied to tiger1405241538's topic in Programming
First of all, that tutorial is partially all wrong! We do not use <font> anymore, we use something called CSS, or cascading style sheets. <font> is depreciated and is not valid in (X)HTML Strict. </p align> ??? We do not end attributes, just the element. No, the address doesn't have to start with http:// if it is an internal link, an FTP server, a NEWS server, TELNET protocol or email link (mailto:) <u> is depreciated. Also, CSS is suitable for achieving the results of <b> and <i>. They will be depreciated in XHTML 2. For semantically stronger and emphasized words/phrases/paragraphs, use <strong> and <em>. Again, this is for SEMANTIC purposes only! Stop living in the HTML 3.2 era and upgrade to XHTML 1.0. Browsers will thank you. -
So where can I find this credit bank thingy? And if we lose 3% of credits when we transfer to the other person, why NOT use the credit bank? ;)I'm interested in performing a job for Xisto members so that I can earn credits instead of money. Credits are more critical and valuable right now

Preferred Forum System So many choices...its overwhelming
FirefoxRocks replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in Software
I didn't mean that it was hard to INSTALL, I meant there were too many options to configure for Simple Machines Forum.I've now been introduced to OvBB also, but I don't like the theme of it although the admin configuration panel is well set-up. I still prefer the famous phpBB system because of the variety of MODs and themes available for it.Then again, IceBB has a very extensible feature list and it is very similar to phpBB, so I am looking into that also.I am looking for more opinions! Please vote and feel free to discuss! -
I have several questions about the credits in Xisto/Xisto and I would like these question to be answered before I do something rash that may endanger my hosting account and/or get my credits revoked ;)1. Are contests awarding credits allowed?2. Can I charge credits for services being performed on Xisto/Xisto?3. Can I charge credits for services being performed OUTSIDE of Xisto/Xisto with hosted members?4. Is it possible to obtain a credit refund? That's all I need to know right now. I was wondering about performing a service that people would usually charge money for but instead I'll charge credits. But I need some clarification first.

I haven't gotten the Blue Screen of Death for quite a while now. I do enjoy phoning Dell Technical Support for an unresolvable problem though. I almost forgot that you can manually trigger the Blue Screen of Death.

I am trying to decide which forum software I should install for my site. I need something free (obviously) and I need a good choice. I think phpBB works great but I am also interested in trying IceBB. Simple Machines Forum is time-consuming to configure and I don't like Invision Power Board (and that isn't free). I have tried testing out the forums at OpenSourceCMS but there were way too many choices and the forums were just completely overwhelming to try them all out. Getting into Portals, Blogs and Image Galleries and you'll wonder if you will be able to try them all Give me your opinion on what you use for a forum. If you don't host a forum, which one do you prefer to register at? Please don't randomly vote Here is a Wikipedia page to inform your decision and you can try them out at OpenSourceCMS. I am also interested in looking towards other software than the ones listed above in the poll, please suggest!

Can You Make Your Own MySQL Databases? Im an idoit
FirefoxRocks replied to iGuest's topic in Programming
If your web hosting service is Xisto or Xisto, go to your cPanel and add a database and a database user. The direct link is: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Replace yoursite.trap17.com with the actual domain name. If you are running your own server with MySQL and PHP, you MUST have enough knowledge of how to use MySQL if you have a server running for your site -
It would help if you explained which file format you need to save something in. Check out Download.com for suggestions. If that isn't the category you're looking for (above link), select another one and remember to sort by Free license. That way you don't have to pay $500-$700 for good software, you only see free ones. I hate time-limited trials too, feature-disabled trials aren't too bad but I still prefer free and open-source. I know yEd Graph Editor is good for creating SVG images.

I have found an excellent VISUAL CSS designer that you can actually see what will happen with the text that you are formatting. It is called True Html Editor and can be found here in Opera Widgets. Note that you must use Opera to run this It includes a button for W3C Validation. I think that this will be helpful because you don't need to reload the browser every time you want to see a change in your CSS file or XHTML document. Unless you use a program compatible with server-side document editing, this little widget is an excellent tool. Check it out, it has over 47 000 downloads already!

I don't even know if anyone uses this. I mean the site is pretty blank except for 1 link. For a website, that is pretty dumpy. It has really bad structure and design also. For online storage I recommend FTP drives or Avant Online Storage.
