  1. Why was this port-hole introduced in the COA label anyways? Seems like a waste of extra resources. Also, yes you should be able to use 1 copy of Windows on 1 computer, so if you remove it from your PC, you can install on another one. You can't use the same copy of Windows simultaneously with each other/you can't install the same copy of Windows onto more than 1 PC. But I think that issue hasn't been discussed properly at Microsoft yet.
  2. In one of the Microsoft newsletters that I occasionally receive, they introduced a new software called Windows SteadyState. Its primary use is for Internet cafes as well as libraries to ensure that their computers aren't tampered with by skilled computer people by restricting access to certain critical system functions (control panel, etc). This keeps the machines running at a "steady state".However, home users can also benefit from using Windows SteadyState. It is excellent for parents of kids who know much about computers (like me) and are able to damage things. Restrictions on user accounts can be set (disable right click on Start button, etc). Also, time limits for each session can be set for each user, so Windows will log off the user after a specified amount of time, or a period of inactivity.I have found a bug in this program, whenever updates is enabled, Windows doesn't know it. Enabling updates in Windows SteadyState will cause Automatic Updates to be turned off in Security Center, Norton Internet Security, Windows Live OneCare and I think that other security programs will think that updates is disabled as well. So therefore I don't turn on updates in Windows SteadyState. What puzzles me is the feature labelled "Protect the Hard Disk". It is based off of Windows Disk Protection, but it doesn't need another partition for the cache because this program is designed for home/average users for ease of use. However, the cache file takes quite long to create, in contrast of the actual Windows Disk Protection. There are 3 options available: Reset changes on restart, Reset changes at specified time or Retain all changes.I set it at Reset changes on restart (default). After saving everything and logging off, I decided to log onto a different user account to see if anything popped up, etc. Something sure did, a system tray icon notified "the user" that all changes saved were to be wiped off when the computer is restarted, so save your work on removable media, etc. Ok, that's fine. So I logged off again and logged into an administrator account to change the setting.Since I just reinstalled Windows XP (because of a registry error), I had to reinstall my software, etc. I backed up everything onto Ubuntu and copied it from the ext3 partition over to the NTFS partition in Windows Explorer. After that, I installed a whole lot of software, changed the setting to "Retain all changes permanently". I then rebooted the computer to go into Ubuntu and saw this:"Windows Disk Protection is ... changes on the hard disk" right on the Windows XP logo at startup. That was weird, so after it "made changes", it restarted the computer. I decided to boot into Ubuntu and work from there. The next day when I decided to boot into Windows, everything changed. All programs that were installed the day before were gone. Windows Media Player was reverted to version 9. The only programs that remained were IE7, Windows Live Mail desktop, some sound card utilities, DellConnect and SeaMonkey. I lost a whole day of work in there!!Now I question this software. Is it for the average user (a manager of an Internet cafe, a parent) or is it a GUI interface for a hardcore IT professional tool?
  3. I've never seen a flash drive with 64GB capacity before. And yes, I think that they would cost $3,000. But I mean buying 64 flash drives with 1GB capacity or even 32 flash drives with 2GB capacity would cost probably $1000 less!I mean, other than huge movies and stuff, who would need to carry around 64 entire gigabytes of data with them?!? Many distributions of Linux are well under 64GB, even combined My Windows and Linux partitions are just exceeding 25GB a little. A variety of operating systems could run off of this thing! But someone would have the money to buy this, as if it were to be carried around, make sure they safeguard it, it will be a target for thieves I'm sure.
  4. I've been using this for quite a while now. I agree it is an excellent program to clean out temp files and even more. I do have to warn you to be careful when using the registry cleaner part because there may be some things in there you don't want to remove. Such examples are some files from Internet Explorer 7 BETA (when we used it back then).Anyways, I have saved lots of space by using this utility. Hundreds of MB in fact. The downside to this is that you have to run it on every user account. But it is quick, so I don't mind.
  5. I recommend BitTorrent for downloading large programs, movies, etc. (legally of course :P) This is because the interface is nice and the statistics/graph is nice for seeing if you are actually transferring from many peers/seeds. It is also good for uploading to the P2P network. I used BitTorrent to download Ubuntu and OpenOffice.org, as well as some other large software packages. LimeWire is good for downloading smaller files, such as mp3s and music files. It has a previewer thing at the bottom of the window, allowing you to listen to the downloaded portions of the song while you are downloading, etc. It is very customizable and it also allows you to see the size, quality and connection of the download in the search list. The copyright protection is improving, with the program asking you not to violate copyright laws if you don't have a Creative Commons license or something similar. It depends on what you are downloading. I've had bad experiences using Shareaza because it found 300 peers but connected to 0. I mean, come on, at least 10 of those 300 are active. I have also used BearShare in the past, when I was unaware of spyware and adware. Apparently it doesn't include any spyware/adware in BearShare 6...but McAfee SiteAdvisor says it does. I have always hated KaZaA, viruses, spyware or other reasons. Besides, LimeWire is good and all of my friends use it, I don't see a reason why not. Choose carefully, and remember to only use teh software for LEGAL purposes!
  6. I use Synaptic regularly unless they give me an exact command to enter for apt-get. As for over programs, I don't use Linux much, only for the occasional web browsing and document editing.I have a lot of trouble with Ubuntu Linux, I don't like it very much.
  7. My favourite applications on Linux are: Mozilla Firefox (Windows AND Linux) Gaim (well I don't have Windows Live Messenger there) OpenOffice.org (I prefer it over Microsoft Office) The GIMP, it's good for the occasional editing The games that come with Ubuntu I prefer either reading my email in POP3 clients on Windows or using the Hotmail/GMail interface on the web, so no Thunderbird or Evolution Mail for me. Although, I would choose Mozilla Thunderbird though, it is more compatible with Windows and allows you to copy profile information to each other without messing up a lot. Honestly I've never tried anything distribution other than Ubuntu. All the apps came with it, didn't need to download a lot. Without gEdit, I wasn't able to edit the boot.1st file, so I downloaded emacs, hoping it was the same. I didn't know how to use that though.
  8. Yes, I can log in through the console interface but I don't know what to do there
  9. Yes that is exactly the problem I'm having. I'll try some of the suggestions that were posted in that forum. Thanks for the link.
  10. That's quite weird because I tried using multiple phishing filter extensions in Firefox and none of them said it was suspicious, nor gave me an alert.Hope you get this fixed soon.
  11. You can execute cron jobs at specified intervals to check if a script has been accessed in the last # minutes I think. I don't know how to do this, but I think it is possible because it seems like reading from MySQL.Keep in mind that AJAX is your friend when making server requests but not reloading the entire page.Astahost only supports PHP+MySQL, not ASP+MSSQL. Xisto doesn't have Windows servers, only Linux ones
  12. My results under this:Service Provider Details :Service Provider : Shaw CablesystemsLocation : Calgary, Alberta CanadaPromised Speed : 5x faster than dial-up (lite-speed)Rental : Don't know because bundled with cable servicesSpeed Test Results :My IP : 24.109.***.**My Speed : 154.20kbpsDownload Speed : 19.28 KB/secPosition : ISDN/DSLThis speed test is somewhat inaccurate though, I have disabled QoS, am using Firefox, cache is at 50MB, I tested at off-peak hours and the speed is around only 20kB/sec. I have reached download speeds of 30-35kb/sec consistently and a maximum speed of 50 kb/sec for like a moment or two. This however is using the DownThemAll! extension for Firefox.By the way, you have 1 tiny XHTML error in your site, <div align="center"> when using Strict. Just thought I'd let you know.
  13. I have tried PHP Designer 2005, it's very good, but I prefer HTML-Kit. HTML-Kit is perfect for editing XHTML, PHP, ASP, CSS, JavaScript and much more. I guess I have gotten used to the program, using Notepad is just fine for me when I don't have HTML-Kit. I used to use AceHTML Free, but it started bundling with spyware toolbars and froze quite often. Before that, I tried Microsoft FrontPage, but found that it didn't have many capabilities even though I had no knowledge of HTML back then. I can't wait until they release the beta version, it looks very good! For Linux, I try the SCREEM HTML/XML Editor.
  14. I think that this is a good tutorial back in HTML 3.2, however I would recommend some changes to this. For a beginner, this would help them create their first page, but it would be easier to learn XHTML right from the start. All HTML/XHTML elements and attributes are to be in lowercase letters, not uppercase. The <img> tag needs a closing tag as well as an alt attribute, so it looks like this: <img src="http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png; alt="My favourite car or whatever" /> The alt attribute is to provide alternate information in case the picture won't load, pictures are disabled, your visitor is blind, etc. The <br> element is a self-closing element also, so instead of <br>, try <br />. All of those attributes mentioned with the body are depreciated, although still valid in HTML/XHTML transitional, they shouldn't be used. All of those can be substituted in using CSS styles. Same with the <font> element, never use <font>!! <u> is a depreciated element, try this instead: <span style="text-decoration:underline"> Those are some of the newer XHTML stuff, other than that, your tutorial is quite helpful for beginners! For other helpful resources, check out W3Schools.
  15. I think the most effective ads are vertical ads that differ from the colour scheme of the site (but not blinking or anything like that).Ads at the top of the page may catch attention at first visit but visitors will ignore the ad in future visits. Also during that first visit, a visitor is not likely to <- snipped -> at the top of the page because they are looking for the information that they searched for, navigational links or other elements.A small banner ad at the bottom of the page may be somewhat useful, although not guaranteed. This is because users usually exit the site after looking for the required information. This is only useful when you get the user to click on links, read stuff, etc at the bottom of the page within the area of the footer/where you place the banner.Another idea is to try placing a column of small buttons (width 88-120) along a sidebar. I don't know about others, but I usually like to browse through these to see what the developer supports, uses, etc.Blinking, moving, motion-filled, Flash ads are annoying and may defer users away from your site. They may also cause seizures in certain people.With the AdBlock extension for Mozilla-based browsers, as well as Block Content in Opera and a few other little add-ons in browsers like Maxthon and Avant, ads are becoming increasing easy to block or make invisible. Using AdBlock and AdBlock Filterset.G, I rarely see Google Ads or banner ads anywhere. This may affect your ad traffic based on views/clicks because they may be blocked by these extensions/add-ons.Still, a vertical ad can be quite effective if it is using the right colours, text, and of course isn't blocked. :P}
  16. There is no automatic option for this. You can do this manually by going into the MySQL database operations and changing the AUTO_INCREMENT value or primary key (something similar like that) to the lowest possible non-occupied id number.I don't know if it will skip over occupied numbers or just go back to using the highest number when it encounters a number that is already occupied (e.g. you already have a 7, but you don't have a 5, so you set it at 5, what happens when it gets to 7?)But this is the only way to do this efficiently.
  17. Wow! This utility sounds really useful and handy. Maybe I don't need a portable FTP application anymore, after all, I only use FireFTP for non-textual files and the built-in Workspace in HTML-Kit for code files. I rarely use any other standalone FTP applications.
  18. Ok, I have tried some suggestions and here are my findings:If I press CTRL+ALT+F1 right when I choose to boot Ubuntu (with the orange bar loading), it shows me the booting sequence (something like Autoexec.bat ) and then returns me to the graphical login screen, where the problem occurs once I log in.If I press CTRL+ALT+F1 at the graphical login screen, I login using the command interface and get brought to a command interface prompt where I don't know any commands other than 'exit' and CTRL+ALT+DEL.If I press CTRL+ALT+F1 when it is frozen after logging on using the Ubuntu login screen, it shows me the boot sequence and I know that the computer freezes right after Executing local scripts or Executing login scripts. If I login normally using the Ubuntu login screen and wait approximately 10 minutes or so, I get an error message saying that the GNOME Desktop Manager has encountered an error, some themes may not load properly....How can I fix the GNOME Desktop Manager so that it doesn't encounter an error to hold up my login sequence?
  19. Without a doctype, it will work. But do you seriously want pages to be invalid? No, of course not! We use a doctype to follow the HTML/XHTML standards (rules).
  20. I knew what I was going with the boot.1st file. I edited it to allow Windows to boot if no option was chosen during the boot screen. Otherwise it would boot into Linux as default and that would make other users mad. I will try using the Command Line Interface to login. As I said earlier, I know nothing about the console part of Linux.
  21. Also, you only need to specify the width of the first cell in each column. That will save a lot of typing, space and bandwidth. The table is already 489 pixels wide, so the browser assumes the rows are also, no need to specify that. By doing that, you can have unpredictable results (also, you made a typo). So therefore, you can try this: <table width="489" border="1"><tr><td width="249">test</td><td width="249">test</td></tr><tr><td colspan="2">test</td></tr><tr><td>test</td><td>test</td></tr></table> Notice that even the middle cell didn't need the width specified because it spans across cells which already have the width specified, it uses those measurements. Adding extra lines breaks can confuse you, so avoid them if possible.
  22. Your example link is broken and your subdomain is inaccessible with a HTTP 403 error.Try not to use Transitional XHTML, use CSS and Strict XHTML instead. So your table could be like this: <style type="text/css">.var{width: 600px}</style> <table class='var'><tr><td colspan='2' style="text-align:center">RE This is one cool forum.</td></tr><tr><td style="width:100px;text-align:left">Dylan<br />Posts: 10</td><td style="text-align:left;vertical-align:top'><p style="text-align:left'>Me to.</p></td></tr></table> Ok I could have did more to improve that code but I kept the way you had it and CSS-ized the code. You should try setting table header cells and the absolute (or relative width of those cells). Based on that your table is 600px wide, I'd recommend: <table class='var'><tbody><tr><th style="width:100px">Posted by...</th><th style="width:500px">Message</th></tr><tr><td colspan='2' style="text-align:center">RE This is one cool forum.</td></tr><tr><td style="text-align:left">Dylan<br />Posts: 10</td><td style="text-align:left;vertical-align:top'><p style="text-align:left'>Me to.</p></td></tr></tbody></table> Also, the <th> contents will automatically be bolded and centered. If you set the absolute width of those cells, the rest of the columns have that width. But you only have 2 columns, the 'RE' one is a spanned cell, so I don't know exactly what you mean by the next cell having an offset because there is no cell beside it. But try my suggestions and see if it works.
  23. Recently, Ubuntu has stopped working by not allowing me to access the desktop. It is quite strange.Once Ubuntu has booted up to the username screen, I type in my username and password to log on. It brings me to a blank screen with nothing on it. This happens to all of the user accounts. When I press the Power button on my computer, I see the loading process where it says:Executing login scripts... [OK]and then some network stuff when it freezes. I have no clue what to do here because I've only worked with the GNOME desktop in Ubuntu and only 2 times when modifying the boot.1st file in the console/terminal but I have no clue what commands do in the terminal/DOS-like screen because I haven't used that before other than the command "sudo".Could someone tell me how to fix this problem please? Any input would be appreciated.
  24. I always use passive mode with any FTP settings that I configure. Active mode is slower (if it actually works).Could you explain some advantages of using active mode with FTP? Seems unnecessary to do so, but I may be wrong.
  25. That is necessary for every HTML document that you have. the xml:lang and lang things in the <html> element just declares the document to be English, so those are optional. However, the simplest format are either: It is part of the HTML/XHTML standards and absolutely cannot be ignored, PHP or not. Yes, I recommend having an average knowledge of XHTML before integrating PHP. Seems a lot easier Xisto's servers are PHP and MySQL compatible. Unless you are on a non-PHP host, you should be able to execute PHP commands successfully.
