  1. I stumbled on a web survey of the common screen resolutions and im happy that i can choose a size that will fit most internet user's screens. What im really interested in is how far the user might scroll before they get bored, im thinking it wont be more then a couple of pages. the content wont be continuous text, more like an assortment of small images. Knowing this info will help me decide on page lengths as one page length is not enough but i dont want to get too big as i know users will get bored very easily!
  2. Hi everyone. Hopefully here im going to tell you how to register yourself with the Google search engine and get yourself in their results. Ill start the tutorial assuming you already have Meta tags or other search engine optimisation techniques in place. This tutorial is solely about registering with google. At one time i thought simply using meta tags etcetera would get you listed in Google, i then found out that didnt work, so i wondered why, and the fruits of my labour are what will go into this tutorial. the first step is to get a google account, this will get you access to Gmail as well as the webmaster tools which is where you want to head once youve got an account. To get there g into the "my account" section and look for the webmaster tools link. once there you should be prompted to add a website, you will see a table there and at the top is the text box for the url of the website and the button to add it. First step is to type your website's full URL in there. If its a subdmain like here at T17 you can miss out the "/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi; its not important here, but if you have a TLD i would suggest putting it in. Once you click the button you will see the next page. In the yellow box click on the "Verfiy site" link. There are two options in the drop down list here, either to add a META tag using HTML or upload an empty HTML file. Im going for the HTML file method as this requires no technical skills so is perfect for everyone. ONce yu select that option you will see a filename, copy this filename down and create a HTML page with that exact file name. Now upload this file using FTP or a file manager into your website's "Public HTML" or "www" folder, this is for T17 users, if your host doesnt have these folders then put the HTML file in the same folder as all your other website files. Check its uploaded by visiting this page. Then click the button to continue. The purpose of this, as Google itself says, is to allow you to access more stats about your site and to confirm you are the registered owner of the website. So by now you should be on Googles list of website to crawl, however you might not get listed in any results for a while until Google adds you to their searches. If you want Google to crawl your whole site then this is enough for you, it may take a while for Google to crawl your site. When it does you will see some statistics in this Webmasters tool panel including the number of times Google has crawled your site and if there are any broken links or dead URLS or other errors. Most of you will have some folders like images or files which are included by automatic scripts and such. For these folders you can stop Google and other search engines from getting to them. For this will we use robots.txt, this is simply a text file with the afore mentioned filename that is uploaded into your website's public html, or equivalent, directory. Basically this file contains some instructions which tell "robots", the things that google uses to search with, not to go into certain places, the main use is to prevent search engines going into your image folders and linking your images which is bad for people stealing your art work and is a drain on bandwidth. So to use robots.txt click the link on the left hand side that says "robots.txt analysis" This will take you to a page with two large text boxes, the first shows your robots.txt file, the second is for testing URLs to see what Google will do when it tries to get in them. Firstly if youve never used robots.txt visit the link Google gives on this page and look around that site and get to know about robots.txt and the "code" or syntax. Now the best way to do this is to copy and paste some examples of what they give you and simply change the slash for the folder you want. For example to exclude the images folder i used User-Agent: *Disallow: /images Add as many lines as you wish to exclude any folders you want, i would suggest blocking the image directory if you have any original artwork or graphics or any large images as they will be shown in google image searches and drain bandwidth and most likely the images will be copied. Now once you have the code for the text file you want copy and paste it into the top box on the webmaster tools page, now in the lower box type in a url that shou,ld be blocked by the robots.txt file, for example, mysite.com/images. google will now tell yu if it is allowed to that folder or not, if it all works as expected copy and paste the code into a file called "robots.txt" and upload it, again into the same folder as all your other website files. This should now stop Google and other search engines getting into protect directories. now another way to get better results is to add a sitemap. go to the sitemap tab at the top and then click "Add a sitemap" now choose a general web sitemap. Here again there are a few options, i will take you though the text file option as its the easiest, you an experiment with the other methods if you wish. Make a text file called sitemap.txt the exact name isnt important but keep it a txt file. In here list all of the URLs you want google to search, eg https://www.salesforce.com/products/platform/overview/ List every page you want searched one per line: Then upload this file into the same directory as before. Now type the URL of this file into the box provided and add it. Now you will get confirmation of the fact the sitemap is in use and are pretty much done! Some tips on increasing your position in searches are on the google site, a good one is get links from popular sites. For example if you got a link on the homepage of Xisto straight to your site your pagerank would increase, this would lead to a better position in search results. Other tips are on the site for you to look at. Hopefully this helps some of you who are new to search engines and how to get on them. Dont forget to use the cpanel tools, if your host provides them, to get your site on many other search engines, they might not be the biggest engines arund but a hit is a hit right? Good luck in getting high on the ranks, if you can do that then your website is almost guaranteed high visitors!
  3. Ahh thats interesting, i thought it was continuous stimulation to the brain to effectively take the game inside the head of the user, but i guess to simply enhance the effects would be good, though i too am worried about long term effects. Some people can be greatly affected by feelings like anxiety and fear, it could cause quite a lot of illness like mild schizophrenia in the minority and more general effects like anxiety attacks and nightmares and general stress because if you believe, to a certain extent, that someone is trying to kill you, which is likely in most games, yu culd get really damaged and scared in the long term!
  4. Yeh i would agree with that, a sub.sub.com URL is long to remember, to clarify it would be a top level domain like https://www.salesforce.com/products/platform/overview/ for the quick response, i forgot to clarify that it was about a TLD.
  5. Hi everyone, please see the poll and respond!Let me elaborate here, say if there was a website, the url itself was around 6 or 7 letters long such as Xisto.com, that sort of length, now would you prefer to see a subdomain on this site, such as sub.site.com or have a folder name in the URL like site.com/sub, I want the URL to be as easy to remember and as catchy as possible and im not sure which method would give the best results here. In line with my last post i would appreciate any links to a website where i can find information like this. But please respond to my poll so i can get an idea of what the average user thinks. Thanks!
  6. Hello everyone! Now im working on a website and i need to know the average user scrolling distance in either pixels, inches, pages, any measurement really. To clarify i want to know how far the average user is wishing to scroll down a page to see the contents. Im not talking paragraphs f text like stories etceter because most people will scroll till the end, say if you were looking for something on a page, how far would you, or the average user, be willing to scroll before getting bored and giving up?If anyone can post a link to some sort of web research site where i can get free stats like this i would be grateful!
  7. One thing i had an issue with is understanding how to create users and databases, to do this use the tool "Mysql Databases" in cpanel. For any table/data entry/deleting etcetera use the phpmyadmin tool in cpanel. Note that from phpmyadmin you cant create new databases or users, only new tables and edit the data in the table.
  8. Need i say anymore...?A "horror" film with the title "Shrooms" what could be scarier? Now ive made my mind up lol i definitely wont see it!
  9. In fact sony has almost gone further than VR with its matrix machine.. allow me to quote.. As it says it could have medical applications however i think Sony are more interested in using it to create a matrix like world for gamers. The basic idea is to use ultrasound to modify brain waves and as i understand it this would simulate a sort of dream environment, like in a dream when you shoot someone you feel the recoil here the shot etcetera and this is similar to how it might work as i game i would imagine. Instead of using goggles i guess you would wear a headset across your head and it would take you into the game, im not sure how you get back out again though... that could be interesting. I think this is what Onyxgem was thinking of, its definitely interesting! the entire article is here: https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg18624944-600-sony-patent-takes-first-step-towards-real-life-matrix/
  10. Well nice synopsis there but a title would be nice, now my honest opinions of how this film sounds..Lets break it down.. we have some stoner americans going to Ireland to get some magic mushrooms.. why not just buy them on the internet? or the streets, or find them in america? Now the idea of not knowing if the ghosts and such are real or not seems like a good idea, in fact another film coming out this summer in the UK plays with this idea, a man looses his daughter and believes in ghosts, then it fades as he never sees a ghost so he decides to stay in a hotel room where not a single person has stayed for more then an hour and many have died. Needless to say some really weird things happen and i suspect hes mad, but there ya go! I dont think its a film i would like to see because as i said its just some crazy Americans looking for drugs which i could go and buy almost any day i wanted so the story line sounds pretty bad! and the "Death's Head mushroom" makes it sound like a very cheap silly film!Still each to their own
  11. I dont know how id feel in a house that i know someones died in. To be fair im sure that most houses that are reasonably old have had someone die in them but i guess because you dont know about it you dont think about it. As for being egged id suggest getting your own supply of eggs, rocks, molatovs... anything you've got to hand Ive never really been egged much only once i think, didnt bother doing much. You could try to get to know everyone more and hope it deters them or hope that they get word of mouth that youre decent etcetera and decide not to bother any more.Thing is not to think about hating it too much because then youll forever hate it. I got quite depressed at one point in my old house and after that it just made me depressed because thats what i associated it with. But its true, you should be happy that you have a house!
  12. I shall try Kubuntu first, its downloading as i type this. I did actually have a kubuntu live and installation disk but as with all things important, i lost it! If it doesnt bring much joy then ill try OpenSuse too. Just got to get through the hairy process of partitioning etcetera as i dont have that much hard drive space as it is.... though maybe i can salvage an old drive somewhere
  13. Id say it is a drug because i think im slightly addicted to it. A year back i was coming up to exams and i though what better of a start then a can of caffinated energy drink, namely red bull. So i drunk a can every morning for a week or two and that carried on after the exams for a month or two and ever since then ive needed at the least a cup of coffee to actually function in the mornings. even if i lie in untill midday getting about 12 hours sleep i still need it otherwise im grouchy and groggy all day long. This is especially true for college when its an early start, before i drunk energy drinks i didnt need any caffeine for the entire day but now i have a cup of strong tea and an energy drink or i just cant work, i yawn all day to the extent i find it hard to get anywhere when writing etc because i have to wipe my eyes and such. But there ya go! If i go without caffeine i can be very grouchy and quiet all day and i find it hard to work such as coding etc.. or writing/typing not had a headache yet though. Maybe an addiction, maybe psychological but either way I love my caffeine.
  14. Hello everyone! Ive tried one or two linux distros on my laptops but always the same snag... none/terrible widescreen support, i tried the live CD knoppix and mandriva and another i think that i cant remember... So my question is, is there a linux distro with good widescreen support for 128OX8OOpx dimensions? to be more specific its 15.4in screen with the afore mentioned pixel dimensions. my GFX card is labelled as "ATI Radeon Xpress 2OOMnwith PCI Express Graphics up to 128mb memory" i think only the last part is relevant to the GFX specs but i included it all just in case. Im really trying to avoid windows vista so if anyone says "stick to windows" or "go to vista" i will unleash a virtual slap! Any advice or links are welcome here!
  15. Well im working with credit cards as part of a site too, my solution, and my advice, is to use paypal. You setup the list of products and use some HTML to adjust prices etc... then when they click the link it goes to paypal secure website where they can check out and pay for their items using a credit card or paypal and your paypal account gets credited. I think its the best and safest way, once the transaction is complete you can use some more HTML code to tell paypal where to send the customer, IE back to your website to a thank you page. Learn more at the paypal website, google that! You want a merchant account. It will explain better than i can!Its got two big bonuses, customers feel safer and you dont have to worry about all the security of storing and handling their details.
  16. Hi everyoneI was talking to a friend about setting up a network between our houses when i had an idea.. Why dont we/e i setup a web host?So that got me thinking, what kind of things would i need o do this? of course id need knowledge and of course i dont have enough right now but im thinking what kind of hardware/software and services? Now i know i would need a willing ISP who would allow me to do this, and if it got popular i might need a private line to them for high speed internet. I know i would need a web server and of course a router/modem to conect it to the internet. Then i would need a DNS service of some wort, but thats where things get cloudy for me. I assume that with a subdomain servie i wouldnt need my own DNS service etc because my website would be registered and their sites would be a subdomain of mine. But if i wanted to offer top level domains then i would need some sort of DNS but im not sure how that works exactly, i know the bases of how DNS works but not how to get my own/have access to a DNS for my users. This isnt a serious thing of mine, more of an interest but any input is appreciated! Thanks!
  17. This sounds odd, im not saying it doesnt work but its weird. If it was a cheat then why such a small indication of only one pixel changing colour? And if its just something that happens due to a bug then why does it happen? Its odd, i havent tried it yet because im at college but there ya go.
  18. Thats true, though if there is a lot of work to do with sessions and the database queries and IF's and such.. and if you dont know php then that can be pretty hard even to find the right code let alone get it to work! Though as i said if someone can find the code then im sure a few people from this site can help out in fixing it up to work with your settings.
  19. Do you mean you want this to be live on the internet as part of a website? If so the prograsm to use isnt microsoft access, instead you will need to use, either php or ASP and MYSQL.Dont worry its not as confusing as it sounds, though some coding knowledge or help would be usefull to you. MYSQL is simply a database system and there is a tool called phpmyadmin which is basically the "program" you use to change these databases. It looks like a webpage and infactm it is a webpage, but its the best way to work with these databases. What you will need to do is firstly find out what your webhost supports, this can usually be foud when you register under its features list, you need to look for two or three things, "PHP support" or "PHP version x.x" or "ASP support" and definately something similar to "XX MYSQL databases/tables" that means that you will be able to have a database and the code needed to work with it, on your website. From there you might be able to find some code on the internet, i would look but im in college at the moment. If you can find something like a "PHP/MYSQL user login system" script then come back and someone can help you install and check it. If not then come back and ask for one to be made, if i had the time id do it myself but ive got another coding thing to do so i cant but someone else might be able to.Its not mterribly complicated though if this the first experience with these database and PHP/ASP coding languages then it might be a little more dificult for you but we can all help hopefully!Good luck! try searching for the code on the internet first and then come back here and let us know what you find, if anything.
  20. Thats ok if you have a different solution then id be interested to hear it, at the moment ive got ghostrider's solution in the works but im still interested at different angles to approaching the problem for future reference, and it might help someone else out too By the way Ghostrider, thanks, it seems to be working which is good!
  21. Yeh i would for it too, just to annoy him. And, if he done it from a school computer, definitely go to the headmaster/mistress and mention the fact that he used their network to perform illegal activities and this could even put them in the heat unless they acted on it. Though if hes bigger than you then you might consider Karate classes! It is stupid to put his name there though.... Some people dont deserve the internet, he is one of them!
  22. Ah yes, that makes sense, so long as i use the year as a four digit number, not a 2 digit because every change of the decade would screw it up!thanks for that, i shall try that when i get in from college later, it would be interesting to know how Microsoft Access, the DB application, does this because yu can compare dates directly in that and as far as i know it is just a front end application for an SQL database, though i might be wrong.
  23. Hey all.Now i have a DB, an SQL DB, and i need to auto prune the data there to delete rows lder than a certain time, lets say 2 months for now, the question is how do i do this? The obvious thing is just to add a field which is the numerical representation of the month when the data is entered and every time the DB is accessed it will check this number against the current month,in a numerical format, and if the difference is two or greater that row is deleted, so if the month is January, it would be O1 and if the current month is march then it would be O3 and the difference is 2 so it would be deleted. This sounds fine untill you take into account how months work... it goes from 1-12 then back to one again! i guess i can overcome that but it seems complicated. Now im thinking perhaps SQL has a built in way of comparing dates? if so what is it?! I could simply delete any entries after a certain number of rows but if this website becomes popular then this number of rows might be exceeded in a few days or less so even recent entries would be deleted. Any ideas? Thanks
  24. Suicide, yes i agree, its nt good however it is a basic human right to decide when we die. I have the right to choose when to die, of course if i happen to get kicked off before that time then so be it but if i one day want to die then i should be able to, that relates to the euthanasia debater but thats slightly different. As for emos i agree with whats been said already that "emos" are just venting their pain in life, of course there are emos and then there are emos. Where i live in the UK a usual emo is just someone who listens to light rock music that usually deals with sad things such as My chemical Romance, they are the "classic emos" at the moment. Now the other emos, the EMOtional people who self harm etc.. are different. The first type of emo are those who are just grouped by society as people who listen to certain music and dress a certain way etc but emotional people are those that need help, life has really kicked these people and they cant cope where others can.I have nothing against either group but especially the real emos who need help, sure they might seem weird, and maybe in some religions and cultures self harm etc is wrong as god gave you life or whatever but it really is the last resort for some people and i wouldnt think anything less of anyone who self harms. Everyone is different and some people can cope with huge stress and others cant. I dont think being negative about real emos is the way to go, they already feel maybe paranoid, left out, rejected, sad etc... and the last thing they need is to be told theyre weird and no-one likes them!Though saying that, as death is a human right, so is having an opinion!
  25. Well you go for it, theres nothing else you can do, ive been in this situation and guess what, she DID like me, in fact if we got together i think we would be together still now and this was about 2 years ago and every day i live with that regret. You dont want t be in the same situation trust me!If she does like you then say something like "Well do you fancy a film tomorrow/friday/some day?" be confident and she will likely agree then we go from there! be spontaneous like put your arm around her, compliment her and most of all TALK! Girls like to talk and have interesting, funny conversations and im sure most girls would love a guy they can talk to as well as kiss etc.... so ask her to the movies and keep talking to her, crack jokes etc.. and be trustworthy, if she tells you something in secrecy never tell anyone else, not saying you would but honesty is really important to girls.... i think... Being a guy i cant tell you for sure but i have a really close girl mate and this is what ive learned so far!Just be confident, funny and spontaneous because the signs look good. And if she says no then just say something simple to push it aside like "Well you cant blame a guy for trying!" anything just to let her know that its not going to affect your friendship and so she knows she hasnt destroyed you emotionally and fees guilty! Things might seem weird for a while and you might be shy around her for a while but that will pass and you never know what might happen in the future!Good luck! and keep posting!
