The worst part is that over using explatives only serves to devalue them. If you go around swearing all the time then when you actually are in a situation that warents using them you're left with powerless junk. It's language inflation. Taking a $5 bill and making it worth 5cents.

Personally I don't really think your statistics are especially acurate. I've been using Peer-to-Peer networks for about five years now, and have yet to get a virus as a result from it. Then again, I'm fairly careful about what i download. Most of the spyware you'll get from P2P is in your program itself--not files that you download with it. A good example of that is Kazaa. As far as getting in legal trouble...if you're worried then just download using bittorrent (which happens to be the fastest network advailable anyways) as there has yet to be any bittorrent user who as been sued (they're just going after the people hosting the trackers). That, and they can't prove that you have an illigal file unless they download the entire thing from you--which is pretty damn hard to do concidering how the bittorrent network is setup. Ofcourse, I'm not encouraging you to partake in illigal activies...but if you are anyways you mind as well protect yourself.

What Does "niggling" Mean? Great word, especial in arguments
gaea replied to gaea's topic in General Discussion
Heh, I like using larger words because of the subtle neuances that they convey. For instance, if you say a girl (or guy, if that's your orientation) is "hot" that's quite different than saying that they're "cute" or "beautiful." All of those words have the same basic meaning--attractive--but they convey subtlties far beyond that basic meaning. I don't know...maybe it's just me. But i feel that the more words I know, the more expressive I can be while speaking or writting. -
Nice list.Could you clearify it by saying which ones give you a link directly to the file, and which ones make you go through an ad filled page first? Also, if you could add the maxiumum storage times to the rest it would be nice.Anyone have any personal experience they want to share about any of these hosts? I'm looking for someplace i can upload a ~50mb file where i'll get a direct link (no ads). It'd be nice if it stayed up for atleast two weeks between downloads (though that probably won't be entirely nessacary). Any suggestions guys?

Sorry, but you weren't completely clear in what you wanted. Do you want to have one specific ad banner (being "static"?) in each area on your site? If so why don't you just use html to add the images in?e.g. <img src="/images/ad1.jpg">Then, if you wanted to change the ad displayed later you'd just upload another banner with the same name.Another alternative would be to use iframes, which is, in essence, like embedding a second webpage within the first.Your code would look something like: <IFRAME src="adbanner.html" width="400" height="500" frameborder="1"> [Your web browser doesn't support iframes...lucky you!] </IFRAME>Then you'd just make adbanner.html with the add you wanted it. Or you could iframe to a php document if you wanted it to randomly display an ad.Hope that was helpful. If not, please try and clearify your question.

I love mangas...though most of the time (there are exceptions ofcourse) I enjoy watching animies more. My favorite animes include: Serial Experiments Lain, Hellsing, Full Metal Alchamist, Golden Boy, Gunslinger Girls, Trigun, and basicly anything done by Miyazaki.

Seriously. That game is ssssooooo difficult. The new ones are rather difficult as well. Atleast you feel acomplished once you actually manage to beat it

Ah, now we get into the idealogical discussion...which is fine. The only thing is tempers tend to flare up around these sort of subjects, so lets all make an attempt to keep it civilized. I think the disagrement between pro and anti abortion people can be traced back to one main conflict of beliefs: weither an unborn fetus constitutes a human being. Personally, I don't believe so...especially in the first and second trimesters where the brain remains largely undeveloped. Hell, babies arn't even self-concious until a few months after birth (not that i would advocate infacide ofcourse). And that is perfectly fine--they can believe whatever they want to. No one is forcing them to get abortions. The problem arrises from the fact that they then try to force their beliefs upon other people. This can be equated having a law requiring all fetuses conceived from rape or incest to be aborted--regardless of the mother's personal preferance or religion. Asking for a law to be created/inacted based on a religious or "moral" (i.e. specific set of morals, not the end all be all) argument is contrary to how our legal system is supposed to opperate. Our laws are, supposedly, based on logic. Hence the seppeartion of church and state. Now that is not to say that this is how the system actually works in reality--but that is the basic premise that we're supposed to be striving for. Unfortunatly our courts tend to get cluttered with religion and politics (from both sides). I'll post an argumentative essay i wrote about abortion based on Mark Timmon's Logical Contextualism when i get back to school in a week (its on my home computer). Hopefully we can continue this conversation in a fruitful and civil manner.

Happy PI day!I remember when I was in highschool I was always excited when 3/14 came around, because it meant food and games in my math class. The only problem was, those people in the first semister were cheated of this experience. In order to compinsate for this I made up the Irational number "Cake." My teachers thought it was funny, and I got cake. A win win situation for all.

Happy Holi To All Of You! Holi is one of the biggest festival in India
gaea replied to mayank's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like a wonderful holiday. Do you know what the origins of it are? I.E. How it came about to begin with?Always good to see bright colors, and people having a good time. It'd be cool to see this holiday catch on in the american culture (assuming that it wouldn't be concidered disrespectful). Can you give us any more information? It sounds pretty interesting. -
While I agree with you, I feel like I must point out that people must be allowed to make some generalizations--in order to hold discussions about more than one thing/person. The danger here isn't the generalizations themselves--it's people adopting them as gospel instead of keeping an open mind and judging things/people on a case by case basis.

Spyware is very, very obnoxious--as I'm sure you all know. So here is a quick guide about how to get rid of it. There are many programs out there that claim to be able to remove spyware, but most of them are ineffective at best and spyware themselves at worse. Therefore, let me suggest my two favorite programs. I would suggest using them in conjunction with eachother, as what one program might miss the other one will pickup. Spybot Search & Destroy is a nice little program which is 100% free. The author asks for a donation for using his product, but it is completely optional. Besides detects spyware and malware this program allows you to 'immunaize' your computer from most of the threats, as well as (optionally) running special protection with internet explorer. Ad-Aware SE is the free version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware product. It contains many features (though a few of the more advanced ones are disabled as an insentive foryou to buy the full version), and detects a broad range of threats. Lastly, if you still use a browser like Internet Explorer I strongly suggest that you switch over to Firefox, as it is much much more secure and will stop many threats before they even reach your computer. These programs, combiened, should keep your computer pretty much spyware/malware free. Though none of this is an alternative to good browsing habbits. Only download/install things from sites that look legitament. And never click on an email attachment from someone you don't know.

Unforunatly there are loads of ignorant, small minded individuals no matter what age group you are in. Your best bet is to just ignore them, and focus your energies on more importain things. In essence: Let their pettiness be their own problem, there is no reason to make it into your own. (Interestingly enough I just got a reading from the I Ching saying something rather similar to that a few weeks ago).

The world was rumored to end in Y2K. Not like anyone but the most guliable believed it though.Honestly, I see two courses for humanity. Either we wipe ourselves out in some fashion (war, pollution, disease), and another species takes over where we left off. Or we become so advanced that we evolve--both naturally and technologicly--into a completely new species.Either way, I highly doubt that the world as we know it is in any great danger. I'd wager that most people agree with that...though I'm sure religious people would beg to differ, as they wait for armagedon.

A few quick suggestions about your site:1) The page is formatted in such a way that it needs a horizontal scrollbar when viewed in a browser at 800x600. Perhaphs you could make two versions (a high res, and a low res one), and then display the apropreate one using javascript (if you want me to elaborate about that just lemme know, or you can just search for it on google).2) I like the top banner, but it seems too constrasty to me. It is so strong, visually, that it distracts my eye from looking at the rest of the site (which is mostly in midtones). If you toned down the contrast some I think you'll find the site flows better together.3) Try to keep the middle column (where the content of the indivdual pages, e.g. Home, Computers, Transit, etc) at a fixed width. As it is there seems to be five different widths. This means that the right-hand column (with search, latest posts, etc) is in a different postion neigh every time that you select a new page. Admitidly, its mostly a cosmetic issue, but it'll look more professional if the formatting stays uniform.

Alright, sorry about that. I wasn't aware, and certainly won't do it again.

What Does "niggling" Mean? Great word, especial in arguments

Alright. I didn't realize that posting the word would be so contraversial Feel free to remove it if you wish. -
Hey, I just registered for this site (and submitted a hosting request) today. Before i begin to fully develope my site on here i just want to make sure it falls within your rules and regulations. I've read the TOS and it seems ok, but i just want to double check it before i invest alot of time and effort into developing it here. My website is going to be rather political in nature. It is the jumping-off point for a political/artistic movement that I am trying to build in the greater boston area. Some of the artwork contains graphic (non-sexual) images which could be construed as offencive by some. They are used purely for artistic purposes, and to further the disemination of information. Is this congruent with the TOS? Thanks, --Paolo

What Does "niggling" Mean? Great word, especial in arguments
gaea replied to gaea's topic in General Discussion
I'm not quite sure what you mean. The word has absolutely no racist connotations. The only way it could possibly be construed as offencive is that it i mostly used to tell someone that you think their argument is petty or superficial. Perhaphs you are thinking of a different word (though i am unaware of an similar ones that would envoke racial connotations)? I think you may be confused about what this word actually means (though i just posted the deffination). Please elaborate. -
Here's a quick (mostly postive) news post: 1) Haiti is in the process of electing Pr?val (a friend of the kidnapped former president Aristede). 2) A group of Chinese Elders, who formly held postions of power within the goverment, have publicly challenged China's policy of mass cencorship. Talk about getting support from an unexpected quater. 3) Sweden claims that it will fully abolish it's reliance on fossil feuls by 2020. That's 16 years. Wow. 4) There are leaked memos floating around that seem to suggest that the UK goverment will pull out half of its troops in Iraq sometime this comming summer. 5) Schools in south afriaca are no longer allowed to charge an enterance fee with out first making sure that each family is capible of paying for it. Should see a huge rise in litteracy now education within the next few years. --------------- More News: ---------------

Well crap.Alito has been on the bench for less than a month, and already conservatives are preparing to over turn Roe vs. Wade.South Dakota legislators just outlawed abortion except in situations required to save the life of the mother. If this is brought to the supreme court there is a very good chance that they'll uphold it, striking down Roe vs Wade. The supreme court is already tackling one abortion case: weither to reinstate a feberal ban on late term abortions.Either of these cases (or many more sure to be on the way) could be the catalyst to send us back to the days of coathangers. Disguesting. If this happens there better be an uprising in the streets.Time to do a photo project based on it. Get support going.

This is just disgusting. I don't know how people could do this to children, it blows my mind. A ten year old hasn't even gone through puberity yet. There are some seriously sick and demented people out there.
