Ok, I am going to teach you how to set up and include a phBB Forum on your web site hsted on your local computer set up as a Server. This tutorial references to snlildude87's tutorial at http://forums.xisto.com/topic/20432-test-your-php-pages-wo-uploadinternet-complete-working-guide-on-how-to-test-your-php-pages/. You have to set up a MYSQL DATABASE and a Apache server sucessfully in order for this to work. Do that first then come here and we can start. Ok, Now that you got your Apache server set up and your MYSQL Database setup according to the Tutorial from snllildude87, lets BEGIN! Step 1: First off you got to have a working HTML page with a button or link of some sort to point towards your forum. Set up your page so it has a working link. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd;<HTML><HEAD> <TITLE>Setting up A phBB forum</TITLE> <LINK REV="made" HREF="mailto:youremail@email.com"> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> <META NAME="generator" CONTENT="NoteTab Light 4.95"> <META NAME="author" CONTENT="yourname"> <META NAME="description" CONTENT=""> <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT=""></HEAD><BODY BGCOLOR="#000000" TEXT="#FF0000" LINK="#0000FF" VLINK="#800080" ALINK="#FF0000"><H1>Setting up A phBB forum</H1><P>Click <A HREF="hi">here</A> for the forums!</P><HR><P><SMALL>Created on ... December 06, 2005</SMALL></P></BODY></HTML> There is your code. We will replace <A HREF="hi">here</A> with the proper code later on in the tutorial. Step 2: Ok now since we got a working page and a working link lets upload the index.html or w/e named your html file into: D:\apachefriends\xampp\htdocs ( under xampp> htdocs, where u find it put your website there.) So now lets test this webpage to see if it works. Go to: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. If that doesent work check to see if its in the right directory if not still ask for help. The setup page should look a little somthing like this: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png (ignore the path or loc of file. Just as long as its in htdocs ur okay.) Step 3: Ok so now where do we go from here? well its time to install phBB forums. Be sure to have the latest version of phBB installed FROM: https://www.phpbb.com/. Now unzip the file to your destop from wherever u downlaoded it to. The file on your destop should be named phpBB or something like that. Rename this file to "forums" and place it or upload it into the htdocs directory. Now you should have a new folder named Forums. When you click in forums there should be a whole bunch of folders like: Admin, Contrib, Docs, ect. now next step. Installing phBB! Step 4: Time to install phBB! so start with opening your website to the homepage(AKA: index.html or w/e u called it). Now, the website's adress should be something like:http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, so re-write it so it says: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. This should lead you to a screen where you have to enter in amounts of data. After everythting is installed delete your install.php and contrib.php files for security reasons. Now to use your forum go to: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (it doent matter the login one give you a chance to register or login and begin creating your forums! If you are having trouble please post your problems here. Step 5: Ok so now the phBB forums are working on your site, but you want to be able to access your forums without typing in the commands. Ok remember this? http://photobucket.com/user/tommywelphbbforum1.jpg/library/ now its time to make that link into a working one. Simply take the code we used before: !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd;<HTML><HEAD> <TITLE>Setting up A phBB forum</TITLE> <LINK REV="made" HREF="mailto:youremail@email.com"> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> <META NAME="generator" CONTENT="NoteTab Light 4.95"> <META NAME="author" CONTENT="yourname"> <META NAME="description" CONTENT=""> <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT=""></HEAD><BODY BGCOLOR="#000000" TEXT="#FF0000" LINK="#0000FF" VLINK="#800080" ALINK="#FF0000"><H1>Setting up A phBB forum</H1><P>Click <A HREF="hi">here</A> for the forums!</P><HR><P><SMALL>Created on ... December 06, 2005</SMALL></P></BODY></HTML> Look for <A HREF="hi">here</A> Now see the "hi" in quotes? Thats the file the browser is going to look for on the server. So simply rename it to the location of your index.php or login.php for the forums! Now it should be something like: <A HREF="forum/index.php">here</A>(NOTE: you can also use forum/login.php instead of the index, only difference is there will be a login prompt instead of viewing the forum.) <P>Click <A HREF="forum/index.php">here</A> for the forums!</P>( we need the full script because the part that says Click "here" is a hyperlink.) So now when you click on "here" it should lead you directly to your forums! http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png I hope you guys found this tutorial helpful and useful. Thanks. -Savge Notice from jlhaslip: fix typos

Boosting Your Computers Speed! Using msconfig
savge17 replied to savge17's topic in General Discussion
Defragging is awesome, REMEMBER though that any of those Defrag programs you see that proclaim to boost your comps speed... dont use them. I used to have http://www.condusiv.com/ but, my computer crashed and I had to re-format. So i tried it again with deskkeeper and it crashed a second time. So i had to re-format twice in a row. Now my third time I used the default de-fragger that came with windows, it hasnt crashed since........ so make a good choice, default is usually better. Learn from experiance -

Boosting Your Computers Speed! Using msconfig
savge17 replied to savge17's topic in General Discussion
I'll look into that, Im pretty shure there is a way. Glad you liked the tutorial. -
UPDATED VERSION: I know there are other totorials about this, but they were lacking the key features that could be used with msconfig. In this tutorial I will show you how to manually boost your computers overall performance and boost-speed NOTE: This could cause damage to your computer or failure to boot if done improperly so plz listen closely! First off start at the destop of your computer. Click Start>Run. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png This should Bring up a bar where you can enter in commands to bring up the windows console. In this bar enter in "msconfig" (without quotes). http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Next you will see the System Configuration Window pop up. Now this is very important! Do not start clicking random things to boost your computers speed! We are not there YET! Failure to listen could cause serious damage. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Ok, time to boost your computers overall performance! As you know many programs run in the backround of your computer. In some cases these programs that you dont even know that you are running in the backround can be big system hogs. They use up uneccessary memory, witch decreases your computer's speed. Now, it might not be noticibal now. But just wait until your computer gets more and more and more software. This will, in the long run, slow your computer down. Just click the services tab and now we wil have to edit some of our choices here from the list of programs. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Next click hide all microsoft services. You dont really want to mess with microsoft's services becuase you really cant tell witch one is a good or bad program. I recomend leaving that alone, but if you want to you can make a restore point on your computer and mess around. But I really dont recomend that! . http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Now we have a list of programs that arent microsoft related, if you know the programs you need simply leave them clicked, otherwise disable all the programs that you dont need! after you unclick the programs you dont need or feel that arent neccessary please click apply, but done exit yet we still got more to do! Refer to the image if you are unsure witch programs to disable/enable. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Next open the startup window, here we will configure witch programs will load when window logs on. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Now scroll to the bottom of the list and start clicking! Make shure again, that any microsoft programs you know of are NOT disabled (atleast microsoft programs of importance). Its hard to tell witch programs are important and arent important so if you dont know simply leave it enabled! http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Now scroll up, because there is quite a bit of programs on the list. I disabled programs such as quicktime, AOL, iTunes, and some creative programs, NOT the drivers!. You dont need those programs and they hog quite a bit of system resources. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Next hit apply and click the close button! You are basically done now! YAY! http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Now Restart your computer and HAVE SOME FUN! http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Also here are some more good tips that will help boost your computer: Now you have a healthyier computer! !!!!! I really hope this helped and if this isnt new information to you all, I apologize. I just wanted to give you guys/gals a more clear definition of what to do and what not to do with msconfig. Thanks, I really hoped this helped and cleared some things up. -Savge
