  1. When I first bought my computer it came with pre-stalled windows. At that time I did'nt know anything about using a PC. I learnt using it by just trying out everything, whatever I liked and eventually learnt most of the things in a few months. But still I did'nt know what an OS was. I just thought computer was computer thats it all computers work same way. After that I learnt about different OSs and other stuff, then tried linux with the same computer newbie attitude, tried out everything I thought of and I equally know linux(only one particular distro) as much as windows. It makes no difference. I just want an OS.Linux !=windowsBut Windows = OS and LINUX = OS
  2. Thanks man... I was searching this kind of software for months. Thank you very much.
  3. I am a 7-zip user and I strongly recommend it to evryone else. It is the best compression utility I have ever found and also it is not shareware, it is free open source software.
  4. Did you actually check the entire site before posting here. It is a site where the authors publish their books. So it is completely legal because the author himself has published "HIS BOOK" on this site. How can the author publish without "the author's permission"??
  5. The requirements are quite simple. You need an OS (which you already have) a web server software like apahe and a DNS redirection service(for testing try no-ip.com's free service where you get a free subdomain like yourname.no-ip.com. And lastly a very fast internet connection.
  6. If you want a freeware site with no spyware/adware try snapfiles.com. In the freeware section they have a lot of freewares sorted in many different categories.
  7. Try using sizeof() function to determine the size of int and long. This will be different in different systems. Sometimes the size of long will be equal to that of int and sometimes small will be equal to int. The last number is 5bytes long so the size of long should be greater than 5 if you will use long.
  8. I use Borland C++ compiler 5.5. It doesnt include an IDE but it is free. There are many 3rd party IDEs available which can be used along with this awesome compiler. Get it Here Download the compiler. Note that you must register before you downlode the compiler.
  9. A dedicated gaming console which runs on linux is the greatest proof. When it comes to PC gaming lot of game developers are now targetting linux also. There are many popular games which are being ported to linux by the game developers. Try ID software games(all ID Software games are now available for both Windows and linux), when playing you may not be able to make out that whether you are playing it on windows or linux. When it comes to better gaming experence, both windows and linux are the same. Only thing is Linux has a way to go to be more popular OS and then more and more gamedevelopers will target their games to linux.
  10. I haven't completely switched to linux, because of my favorite games and my limited RAM. But I am planning to upgrade my RAM soon and install cedega on my linux. Then I may totally switch to linux. By the way I am using ubuntu this OS is simply cool.
  11. Thats very nice stuff. But editing registry with registry entries/codes for everything is not recommended. Sometimes you may accidentally delete some required values. However most of them can be done without using regedit for example to disable error reporting Click on My Computer properties->Advanced Tab->Error Reporting->Disable error reporting or there are some free tools available to do all those tweaks.Manually editting registry works but it is not recommended.
  12. This is simple. When you simply format(not quick format) the floppy drive it actually writes the entire boot sector to the floppy i.e. it writes the entire 512 bytes including the 480bytes(from 30-509) of bootstrap code. This is how when you simply copy the required files to floppy it becomes bootable. You can notice this if you have an unformatted floppy in the drive and when you start you computer it wont boot(This is only when the BIOS options is set to boot from floppy first)
  13. So this is what the program 'GateKeeper' does.I used to use it before and even i thougt of buying it. But when I tried it on xp it did'nt work.Anyway thank you.
  14. I do not agree with "Linux is not a good option for gaming" as many people say. It is not because Linux is not a gaming OS(it is even better than windows for gaming), it is because most games available are written for windows "ONLY BECAUSE OF POPULARITY OF WINDOWS".
  15. Winzip versions After the v9.0 associates zip files to icon like what you call "the icon show up as default pregnant with baby zip" that is why you see it.
  16. Google has no plans of releasing this OS for public. Google says it will be used only inside the google complex. And because of this there is no chanse for this OS to compete with Microsoft. And yes Ubuntu can be a major threat for Windows because its free and it even ships for free and many users have completely switched to using Ubuntu.
  17. I use 3 OS's on my system. WindowsXP pro, WindowsME and linux(debian based) and i use all the three equally. I use linux mostly to browse the web, watch movies, play some games etc. I use WindowsME to play some of my favorite games and programming. I use XP for managing my college projects and for some simulation softwares. I usually did'nt find much differences between the two platforms i.e. Linux and Windows. Whatever i can do on windows i can do on linux and vice versa.I completely disagree with people who say linux is only best for webservers and not desktops. Now times have changed it is not the time when linux was introduced, when there was no much support for that operating system. Now there is lot of support available on the web, it is not the old linux which supported more server applications than GUI applications. There are some people who may still argue with me over that. I think they are the people who have not tried it more recently.Trust me on this that as a desktop user you will not find much of difference in the operation of these two platforms. They both work almost same on desktop systems. Both have very good GUI and both support the same amount of applications for a normal desktop user.
  18. Its a good tutorial, but i think it can only be used for testing purposes or just for fun. You can't just let your PC go on 24/7 and maintaining your PC could very well be costlier than hosting your web on one of the best pro hosting companies. Hence you cannot term it as free hosting. One good thing about doing this will be that you will be able to know how everything works. It is best suited for people who want to learn networking and for people who want to test their webpages before uploading them.
  19. Theoritically every science fiction stories seem possible. But what you study in theory is different from applying the same practically. Theory is based on calculations and ofcourse assumptions. In practical life we cannot assume anything.
  20. Hmm, I say every computer does require an IP address to be a part of Internet. IP address is the Internet protocall address. It is assigned to each and every computer on the Internet by their ISPs. To be a part of simple networks like home network i dont think they need IP addresses. Ofcourse the group name is required for any network.
  21. Google, because it is the best. The google toolbar integrated with all of my browsers. It came inbuilt with Opera and i downloaded one for IE.I really like it very much, if I want to search anything related to any topic I would prefer only google.
  22. Windows95 hmm that makes me remember my school days in which our school computers were being upgraded from DOS to Win95. Thats not all, even recently I visited my school and still found the systems with Win95 except the new computers which use Win98 or XP.

  24. There is A problem with the win98SE installation. I formatted the hard disk and reinstalled windows98SE and all the other drivers. But there seems to be a problem with the sound driver. The windows detects the sound driver but when i use win media player it doesn't work. Does anyone know the cause of the problem?
  25. I use System Mechanic 4 and it helps me a lot. Is anyone else using Sym Mechanic?
