  1. Mmm, I've seen these guides before. I've got an old AMD k6 motherboard lying around, might as well put it to use, not now though. As of today I have an installation of IndigoPerl (A bundle containing Apache, PHP, and mod_perl) on my main laptop which I use for testing things out, note that it is being run on my laptop's windows partition. This guide will be useful if I ever decide to use the old motherboard for anything serious involving servers. I've always wanted to run a mini hosting service. I'll refer to this in the future to help me.
  2. When uploading files, there is nothing, no file editor, no shell access, nothing that beats ftp. I use FTP for most of my uploading and my editing now. On my previous host, the files were chowned to the php user so I had to use a php script to edit most of them. In that case, I didn't need to upload often, so I used a simple text-based script that edited the files with no fuss and no graphics.I'd still use it probably if I was in a hurry, it is far faster than connecting to FTP.
  3. I dislike both the zune and the iPod. So expensive for little more than simple hardware decorated with eye candy. I own a Mobile Phone that plays video, shows photos, and plays music, which is enough for me. Why would I need something seperate for those? Most mobile phones now havem features like that. Basically, microsoft launched it for two reasons: They wanted to make more money, and of course, they wanted to make sure that apple couldn't make the iPod mac only and convert people to their OS.But wow, I never knew it was more than 6 months since the lauch of the zune. Time really flies.
  4. I am personaly neutral on the switch. I was about to post a topic about this... but you beat me to it. Anyways, I don't really mind. Sun seems a nice company that isn't similiar to most, since they make open source software. So long as they don't change the license of mysql, I don't mind. If they change it to allow in some small restrctions, I wouldn't mind. But if they gone and changed the open source license to something more commerical, I'd hate them for it.
  5. I speak fluent english, as I am from the UK. Being precise, I am from Scotland. Therefor, I also know Scots, Scottish English (Scots and Scottish English are similiar) and a small amount of gaelic. I also know some french, as most people in western countries do, and am hoping to learn dutch. I also know some basic grammar of spanish, but very little vocabulary.
  6. Okay, so here is what happened:I started my site using sonic-deck.uni.cc as the domain name, assuming I shouldn't prefix it with a www. , however this means that mediawiki which I have installed always goes to sonic-deck.uni.cc and the rest goes to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/,'>http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, I believe this can be fixed. I tried rewriterules and redirects but it didn't work. So, could you please switch my domain to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ server-wise?EDIT:I've fixed the problem with mediawiki by adding changing the $wgServer variable to my site's url. Although it would still be nice to edit the domain.
  7. Money is not the root of all evil. It contributes to evil though, as it is valuable and people will kill people for it. Therefor, I am communist. Communism requires some 'nastiness' to keep people in check but is worth it. If the world was communist, far less evil would exist.
  8. I didn't switch to linux, per se. I dual boot it with Windows XP and Windows Vista. I tried it out with linux only but soon missed some things I had to do with windows and soon realized that a solution was dual booting, having had experiance experimenting with that several years ago. So I started dual booting and now I've got the best of both worlds. Anyways, I started using linux because it was more secure, had many development related programs that I wanted to use, and because it was a challenge, and challenges can be fun. I use the distro Fedora Core. I tried ubuntu but must've gone wrong and it went... bad.
  9. Sadly, this does not work for users of routers, such as myself. But, for people using modems rather than routers, this will be a useful guide. For anyone who does have a router, there is, however, a simple way to change your ip address, which is turning of the router for 20-60 minutes, depending on how close you are to your telephone exchange. In my case, I'm in a small town several miles away from an exchange, so it takes me the full hour. I'm sure most people here will have it take less time though.
  10. Ah, web based ftp clients. My first experiance with them was at the age of 9, when I took a look at net2ftp, at the time it's latest version was 0.77 or around that. I didn't know about PHP and so on at that time, so I renamed them to .html and hoped they would work. Not surpisingly, it didn't. I checked net2ftp's site recently and downloaded a copy and tested it on my localhost server, and it was good. I don't however use web FTP clients when something goes wrong. For instance, on my old host, for some reason the files were incorrectly CHOWNED to the server so I couldn't modify them with an ftp client. To get round that, I used a simple php file editor, which done everything I need. But, if I ever need to connect to ftp in a hurry to make a quick modification, I'll probably have another go at an online FTP client.
  11. I was once Christian, and as such, at that time, I believed in God and Jesus. However, as I grew older, my faith started to disappear. Hearing about the big bang theory of creation was the first blow to my belief in god, though I still had a lot of belief left of him. Eventually I stopped going to church not long after I stopped believing in him. I am now agnostic and almost entirely atheist, and though there are small remnants of my belief in god left in my mind, most are gone. Therefor, I do not believe in god or think he exists.
  12. Time is indeed truly money. When working on a project, the more time you spend on it (if it is a profitable thing), the more money you make when released. The faster someone serves a person at a shop, the more likely they'll be to return. Pretty much in any profitable situation, time is money. The joke isn't really a particulary humurous one, but it's good nonetheless.
  13. I was a bit late to say this... so I'll say it now: Merry Christmas, and a happy new year to all! In my family's new years' eve celebrations, I stay up until long past midnight, have a drink, pretty much the same as everyone else. Usually we visit my uncles house (right next to mine) but not this year.
  14. I never believed in Scientology for one moment. It all seems so silly - an alien who came to earth, murdered everyone, and filled their minds with 'false religions'. If it weren't for the fact so many follow it, I'd think it was a joke, like the church of the flying spaghetti monster. Come to think of it, where he says "judaism, christianity and other religions were implanted into the dead people's mind", is also somewhat offensive to other religions. To be honest, the part that really makes me think "the religion is a scam" is how this L Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer and scientology sounds like science fiction to me.
  15. I like the sounds of this. I had a look on CNSimples website and it looked exactly as it sounds: simple, but not lacking in quality. It's very good for 100kb, so if I were to run a microsite for say, a project of mine, I'd probably use this. Thanks for posting. I'm sure I'll make use of it in the future.
  16. In my opinion, the Wii is seperate from the Xbox 360 and the PS3. I say that because from what I hear and from my looking at the Wii and it's games, it's more of a 'family fun machine' than a true game console, as it is very similiar to real-life games with the wiimote and all. Although I may be slightly biased in my opinion due to owning one, in my opnion the Xbox 360 wins. It has a large library of games, for most ages, and whilst lacking in a few abilities that the PS3 has, it has plenty more to make up for that fact. In recent monthes though, mine has been used more for watching DVDs than for playing games, though I do enjoy the odd play of it now and again. The Xbox Live Arcade feature is great. Being able to download classics allows you to replay them without digging out the old n64 or Megadrive.Short; the Xbox 36 gets my vote.
  17. It's simple and nice, if I ever get a good desktop PC again I'll probably buy a cheap case with a window that allows me to take advantage of the dremel I purchased in early December. Although, I have a suggestion, you could have another section of the guide that shows people how to wire a rheostat in so you can control the fan speed, which would also be useful. Also, the top two switches you have pictured are similiar to some I got myself. Did you buy them from Maplin Electronics, by any chance?
  18. I don't see how it can't, in theory. For instance, as in the first post, permanent magnets should somehow be able to have electricity generated from them. And then you could consider making a machine that generates electricity from walking. In fact, in typing this we are providing a source of energy that could probably be harnessed, too. Nearly everything we do can be used to generate electricity, and whilst technically not free since the energy comes from somewhere in the first place, it's just getting a little unused energy. Thinking right now, heat could be extracted from people exercising and collected to produce steam for a turbine. The list goes on and on. I'll stop here.
  19. Actually, Scepter, you are wrong about the republic and democracy. Britain, the country that I live in, is not a republic, but is a democracy. A democracy is where decisions are given to the public to decide, a republic is a government with an elected head of state. Here in the UK, the US Dollar is staying in line with the Pound Sterling as it usually is, 1 Pound = 2 Dollars. Generally, I don't expect that to change much in the short term.
  20. Recently, when making some sugar syrup, I found out about supersaturation, and looked at it's wikipedia article. I followed at link at the bottom of the article to another article, about supercooling. I tried it out, by getting a small bottled water bottle, and putting it into a freezer. It turned out to be true, when I opened the freezer it was still liquid, whacking it against the table started turning it to ice at the top, then gradually working it's way down. It was impressive, I recommend some people here do it for the sheer look of it. The wikipedia article is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercooling A web page about this which includes some interesting photos is at http://quadpoint.org/articles/supercooling/
  21. I don't really know, on the internet I protected by computer by hopping between free trials of security software and magazine cover discs. I'd say you should google it, and when you find one that looks good, google it's name and get peoples opinion on it, after that you can decide to get it or not to.
  22. Mmm, these things tend to be untrustworthy, I got my email spammed by making the folly of signing up to one with my real email address. Still, if I do it with a fake email, what's their to lose, except a little time. I'll sign up and try and get a domain and if I do get it, I'll post here.
  23. It seems like an IP ban to me, I'm not sure what it could be, so maybe someone of the administration could help you. You could try accessing the sites with a proxy, as a temporary solution though.
  24. I would suggest not getting Vista. It's buggy and unreliable. At the very least wait until those issues have been sorted before buying it. Anyways, you should get a wireless router rather than an internal wireless card, get an internal wired networking card though, and connect it to your router. That allows expansion of your network in the future. Yes, I do recommend a tv tuner. Having had one in my previous PC it was extremely useful, I still have memories of recording tv programs on it.
  25. It's a very hard question. Whilst the conditions of life are so delicate that it seems impossible that there be a planet that can sustain life other than earth, that theory makes it hard to believe there was even an earth. So, probably yes, there is, but almost certainly not as advanced as us, and probably just fungi or some other primitive life.
