  1. It's one of those hand-held devices. My daughter got one for Christmas. But we can't seem to get it to connect to any of our PC's. I was wondering if anyone on the forum here has a kid with one.Gin
  2. Hello Flash, Not sure if I understand what you are asking. Are you looking for an online web site builder? Generally they don't have much flexibility. You select a template, add your content, a few images, and maybe you get to choose your back ground colour. If you're asking about an HTML editor, then what I would recommend depends on your level of skill. But regardless, stay away from Frontpage. There are two ways to edit HTML. Either you use a true HTML editor (and you need to learn HTML) - even notepad works for that. Or you use a WYSIWYG editor. The only one I would recommend here is dreamweaver. But even that has its draw backs. As a full time web developer since '96, I find it faster to use an HTML editor. The one we use is ACE HTML PRO. You mentioned flash. If you want to work with flash, then you need flash. I was just discussing with my partner the other day, that when flash first came out it was really cool and developers were building all these FLASH web sites. The aftermath all these years later, is we hardly ever use it. Most of what we would do in flash is now done in Adobe After Effects, but we only actually built a small handful of "flash sites". Everything else just has elements of flash in it.
  3. Are you selling a product? Or are you depending on revenue from advertising programs such as adsense and affiliate programs?
  4. Many of google's efforts to eliminate spam are effective. Although many of us regular non-spammy webmasters might see these as a pain, but they actually work. We just have to "abide by the rules and recommendations" to win at their game of inclusion. If you look for example at the "aging factor". Google once did an analysis on the age of spammy domains vs the age of domain names of quality sites. They discovered that there were more spammy new domains than old domains. For this reason it is difficult to rank well for competitive keywords in the first nine months in google. (I didn't say impossible though.) No one knows google's algorythm. But I know from personal experience that this www vs non-www is part of it. Likely for the same reason stated above for the "aging" factor. It seems likely that spammy sites submitted many duplicate pages with the same content in hopes that "something would stick". BTW, duplicate content applies also to titles and descriptions. Make sure those are unique too. GIN
  5. The key mistake that most online entrepreneurs make is the same one that offline entrepreneurs make ... they launch a business without first researching the market. The most successful online businesses are ones that solve a problem that people are already looking for a solution to (and a solution that is hard to find or doesn't exist.) THIS is what I call a niche business. To find out if there is a market for your business use tools like overture and keyword tracker to find out how many people are potentially looking for what you have to offer. Word tracker assigns a value between the number of searches and the number of sites serving those keywords. You'll be looking for a KEI of at least 100. If you're wanting to purchase traffic, the best solution is google adwords. But if this is done wrong, you can expect to pay a lot of money for those clicks. (It isn't as easy as a lot of sites promise.) If you launch an affiliate program for your site, don't expect to get affiliates to sign up if you aren't successful on your own already. Be sure to also use Google Analytics if you aren't. You need to track your conversions. Your conversion rate is how many people take action. In most cases "take action" is to purchase whatever you are selling. The most "generic" form of traffic that works for online business is YOUR LIST. If you don't yet have one, start a NON SPAM opt-in email list. Keep in touch with these contacts regularly. I don't know what you have already done, how competitive your keywords are, or even how old your site is, but hopefully I have given you some information that you can act on. The offers that you see to "drive traffic overnight" etc don't tend to work. You need qualified traffic.
  6. I use WS_FTP95. I'm quite hapy with it. Though I'm thinking of changing the server in 2007 to SFTP.
  7. I found something I'm very happy with. It's a new ACER machine (not a refurb.) It came with everything, inlcuding windows, and was $429 Cdn, and had a $30 rebate on top of that. (Except the mouse is not optical, and the HD was only 80G.)I picked it up at Staples Business Depot. Generally I only like to buy a PC from a computer store, but this was a great deal.It will do her great for her first PC (she's only 6).BTW, what's Ubuntu?
  8. I'm shopping at the moment for a PC for my child for Christmas. I thought I'd post this here in case anyone has come across any great deals.I'm looking for something new ... though not new technology, so I can spend under $400.Here are my only requirements:512M Ram80+G hard drive (though I'd prefer 160)DVD burnerOS includedonboard video, sound, NICDon't care about the motherboard/CPU.no monitorI'm okay with a refurb if it is purchased in Canada (so I can get a short warranty.)If it comes from the USA, I don't think I'd want a refurb in case it's a lemon. And of course it would need to arrive by Dec. 22.So if anyone runs a site (or affiliate site) with something like this please feel free to post and recommend. Thanks,Gin
  9. Yes we'll get there. I grew up with a rotary dial phone. We didn't even have jacks for our telephones. Lok how far telephony has come!
  10. I'm not familiar with the dong ... are you trying to remove someone's VOICE from the track?
  11. Ask a child the same question. If they're looking for a computer for Christmas ... often I have heard "just a little laptop computer would be fine".They figure since they're smaller, they're cheaper!I run a desktop, though in the past used to have a laptop. I don't think the mobility is worth the extra money.
  12. Interestingly enough, I set up an account last year at another few web host. The account was never activated because no one at tech support ever follows up.Also, I bought a paid membership to a forum somewhere else that was also supposed to include a free hosting account. Once again, tech never actually set up the account after waiting for 3 months. Here, I waited patiently (I think it took about a month or so.) No complaints. As a matter of fact, hourah ... you guys did what the others never did ... you actually followed through with your promise!Gin
  13. My husband and I both use DAP and realy like it.They have a free version and a paid version. (We are using the free version). When I first boot my system the program will load and there is a small screen that comes up which contains information and ads. Other than that I don't have any issues with ads from it. I do check regularly for spyware etc.As for performance, my husband has realy tweaked his PC for downloading and regularly gets download speeds that exceed 600Meg/sec on his PC. But he has done more tweaking on his PC than I have on mine.Years ago when we first got high speed I was excited to get 70M per sec. Today that speed would frustrate me.A few months back I was trying to download a trial version of an adobe product. And even with highspeed, it was going to take about a day to download it. I tried twice to donload it, and both times it crapped out after a couple of hours. This was when we came across DAP. After installing it we tried again, and got the program downloaded in less than an hour.
  14. Thanks ... the board's soooo big. I don't read "everything" on it. Besides ... it's working again.
  15. My incoming mail has been giving my errors since this afternoon.Gin
  16. Say WHAT? How many people are HOOKED on IM?
  17. Well the good news, is I was trying to go too far with this project. It was the NEXT phase to turn it into one page. I copied your code to my hard drive and gave it a whirl, but I ended up with an error message. (Sorry). But my project has progressed nontheless and I have made some steps forward. Here's my question today. My structure is (1) customer places an order (2) php checks for errors (3) php displays the order once there's no errors All from one page. Right now, I have one page ... but when I place the order, the original order still stays on the screen. It doesn't go away ... likley something with my IF statement to see if the page has called itself. When you hit the submit button, the order just draws itself UNDER what I already had. The code is here: http://www.londonlink.ca/order_form.phps Comments, guidance and criticism please? (but be gentle ... I'm still new to this). *grin*
  18. No sure that loading time is an issue ... you have posted an image of your template ... not the HTML etc page.
  19. I put together this: //Make Sure $qty is NOT blank before checking if it is a number if (!empty($item_1_qty)) {//not empty } if (intval($item_1_qty) !== $item_1_qty){ //item 1 qty is not a whole number $redirect_to = 'order_form.php?error=6'; header("Location: $redirect_to"); exit(); } But I get my error message coming no matter whether it is an integer or not.
  20. I'm writing some error checking code and my PHP editor colors the script ... and am running into a (dumb) question. (Sorry - I'm learning). I have typed the following: if (!is_integer($item_1_qty)) { //qty is not a number $redirect_to = 'order_form.php?error=1'; header("Location: $redirect_to"); exit(); } I don't understand why my is_integer is black when I am expecting it to be blue. When you do if (empty$ etc ... empty is blue. I'm a bit confused about that. Gin
  21. Don't be concerned about assisting me with an assignment. The instructor has no issues with that (even on our final exam) because in the real world when people have questions they go to forums and ask them. I don't think I understand yet where my page two of the code goes. Here is what I have so far. Can you tell me if I have put it in the right place? <?php/** * Student Assignment #2 *///Retrieve data//Post Action $action = (isset($_POST['action'])) ? $_POST['action'] : "";//item 1 $item_1_purchased = (isset($_POST['item_1_purchased'])) ? $_POST['item_1_purchased'] : ""; 22. When I move the includes statement to directly above the form, the page will display in FF. But I get an error now. http://www.londonlink.ca/check_web_site_page_rank.php code is located at http://www.londonlink.ca/check_web_site_page_rank.phps I just learning, but it was my understanding if you are going to have PHP on your page you have to start the page with PHP. Is that not correct? Gin

  25. I'm working on a small assignment due tomorrow and am having some trouble. I have a functioning form that you input the data on one php page, and then it does a little math and displays the result on a new page. The assignment is to make this work on ONE page, and to add some error handling. I'm having trouble with the basics of passing the data that has been input on the form, back to itself. I am stuck with a few questions but I'll start with one. I have the data passing back to itself so that when I start the error checking, the fields won't have to be repopulated. Next I have to PROCESS the form, which previously had to go to a new php page. This one stays on the same page. I don't know where to add my code from page two, onto page one, to make it one page. Here is what I have to this point: <?php/** * Student Assignment #2 * Order Form * * @package Chapter7 *///Retrieve data//Post Action $action = (!empty($_POST['action'])) ? $_POST['action'] : "";//item 1 $item_1_purchased = (!empty($_POST['item_1_purchased'])) ?
