  1. It is utterly pointless.I bet there main target for doing this is to scare ignorant users into taking there computers in to be fixed every time they see a "red" screen because it will feel much more serious then the regular blue screen.I could imagine them just putting on the red screen - "Your copy of Windows Vista is permnantly damaged, please buy another one" - That wouldn't surprise me.
  2. Zone alarm has some built in protecting software for ebay.It has some settings in the Overview tab under preferences. It is labeled "Online fraud protection"There you are able to "protect" your ebay password. Mess around with that and see if it helps any. Also make sure that zone-alarm trusts your browser to act as a server.
  3. If you are behind a router a firewall is not 100% necessary. The windows firewall is almost sufficient for normal users as long as you are behind a router. There are several other free firewalls out there that can perform just as well. Try googling for some. Also, make sure you do have the latest version of zone alarm in case you have not upgraded in a while.
  4. Nice job.BF2142 is my new favorite game I absolutely love it.I would like to make you aware of one thing however.Video cards are improving at amazing rates but you are limiting yourself. You should start a new computer build that carries PCI-Ex16 ( PCI Express ) instead of AGP.PCI is faster and more reliable then AGP which is why newer video cards are not available in AGP.I'm not saying you need to hurry up and upgrade but when it is time to upgrade a video card again I suggest you go all out and get a new Motherboard with a PCI-Express slot.( Also, overclocking is much safer with PCI Express )
  5. Google may have its questionable policies but their support for the Linux community is undeniable. The Linux OS will continually become more and more appealing with major corporations like Google supporting them and developing applications that will run without the use of WINE.
  6. Yes I read the article on slashdot and everyone in the blog just laughed and pushed it aside. In my opinion it would be suicide for Microsoft to pursue this nonsense. How can Linux infringe upon Microsoft's "Intellectual Property" when they still have code in their kernel dating back to Windows 95. If you ask me its the other way around. I think Microsoft is just crying over the fact that Linux is steadily gaining power in the OS world and they can do nothing to stop its progress.
  7. Its already been done.A company started a project to see if they could somehow modify the Vista kernel. They figured out how to turn the lock off, make any changes to the kernel they wanted and were even able to turn the lock back on.Not only did they install a virus, but they made it so it would be impossible for a virus to come off without a complete drive format and reinstallation.Vista's "kernel lockdown" has already created a major security threat if they are able to write a virus that will do all this automatically. On top of that Microsoft failed to release source code for the Vista kernel and OS until just a few weeks ago to major anti-virus companies. This might cause a major problem when Vista is out for a few months and anti-virus companies are still developing their programs specifically for Vista. Microsoft was at first not going to release the source code at all but companies threatened to take it to court.I will try to find this article, I read it on slashdot a week or so ago so I will browse through my emails a little later and see if I can find it and I will post the link.
  8. Hey guys I have purchased an account at Xisto - Web Hosting.comI paid the extra $3.5 a month to get a dedicated IP for SSLNow that I have it does anyone know how to set it up and make it work?I tried messing around with stuff but I can't seem to figure it out.
  9. This explains a lot.I had assumed that the server issues were due to either a down server, causing Xisto to cram are accounts on less servers for maintenance or that the number of free hosting accounts has just grown so large that the servers can't handle it.Now that I see this thread though I completely understand what happened. If I may make a small suggestion, thats if a system similar is not already in place. These problems were easily forseen and it would have been nice to recieve some message/warning that the servers might be experiencing problems due to this kind of stuff. That way we would not freak out when the servers are going down. You should have seen my face when I realized all my files were permnantly read-only no matter how I applied CHMOD. I was completely baffled, after a few days of it I was almost ready to buy a hosting account sooner then I had planned.Anyways it would be nice if we could be warned of future possible problems like this. Another example was the CPANEL update, I had no idea that cpanel was updated until I realized my php mail function stopped working.I completely understand if you prefer to keep this information confidential, because they are your servers and you are providing us free accounts. If you already have a section like this well you can reach through your monitor and slap me in the face for not paying attention.
  10. In my opinion anything "sacred enough" to be completely protected from right click and protected from view source shouldn't be on a website anyways. Its pointless.
  11. Well I use PHP-Nuke on my site and about once a week I send an email to about 150 people or so ( thats a mass email in my opinion ) I just use the PHP-Nuke built in email thing. PHP-Nuke
  12. not only is it working it seems to be working much faster now then it used to beWhen i send mass emails to all my members it usually took like 5 minutesnow it takes like 30 secondsits insanewell whatever you did it works great now so thx alot man
  13. Well the MySQL issue seems to be resolved as my website is back up and running with no data loss.I would like to thank the site administrators and anyone who contributed to getting this done in a timely fashion. As for the cron jobs well the best of luck to you on that.
  14. I use Operah but I would prefer Firefox over IE.IE has too horrible a history for me to trust and Microsoft still has some screws loose in their heads because they just released IE7 and they have yet to get rid of ActiveX, which is a huge security risk. Of course they say ActiveX has "increased security" but thats a load of crap.On top of that I try to stay away from Microsoft products in general because I like to support companies other then Microsoft to try and help diminish the monopoly Microsoft has in many markets.
  15. Yes of course I have backups but the problem here is I can not even make a new database to put the backup on.The MySQL service for me is completely shut down, and even if I did manage to create a new database the PHPMyAdmin is also not working so there would be know way to upload my backup file to the database.
  16. I tried to visit my website today and I recieved the dreadful page from my php-nuke site "There seems to be a problem with the MySQL database" First I thought, "no big deal server is probably rebooting or down for a little bit" So i logged into my cpanel and clicked on "Server Status". Thats when I started worrying. It said the MySQL servers were up and runnign fine. I went back to my main page and looked at my MySQL server count and instead of saying 2/99 it now says NA/99 I am unable to create a new database and I recieve this error when I click on PHPmyadmin This is a huge problem for me because my website uses PHP-Nuke and it cannot display anything except for an error page without access to the database. Hopefully the data is not lost because my backup is a few days old. Anyone else having this problem, and what do I do to fix this?
  17. The page after you login shows how many credits you have. Otherwise known as "Forum Home".
  18. Basically you are trying to disable this users ability to browse the internet with any browser am I correct?I know that there is a way to control internet rights for specific users, I had never looked into the subject because I had no reason to but I think there is a way to specify port access rights or something of that nature. There is probably a way where you could disable port 80, which is for web pages and you would need to disable the SSL ports as well ( otherwise he could still access his mail which is probably on a secure server ) but I don't know these ports off the top of my head. You could be nasty and completely disable the network drivers on his user account. You could be sly and go into his specific internet settings and tell it to use a random gateway other then your router which would always result into browsers displaying an error page. However from what you have said it seems you are trying to restrict web browsers only?Well you could uninstall all the browsers off his account, and then disable his accounts ability to install anything. ( Windows XP supports having programs installed on only certain accounts ).But you must always fear, where there is a will there is a way.
  19. I ran the JNLP and it looks pretty cool. I was completely unaware of the entire JTree class despite my heavy interest in Java.I suppose if you had a major application in Java this would come extremely useful in writing Help files. The Help application would display a GUI with 2 Panes, the left being the JTree representing a table of context or something of the sort and when you clicked on a specific tree it could immediately draw information on that subject in the other pane.Looks very interesting, I might look into implementing it into a future project of mine.
  20. Routers cannot assign an IP address to more then 1 computer. Also you your "global access" that you are refering to as a server sounds like the DMZ ( demilitarized zone ). You should not have to assign a computer to your DMZ. The function of a DMZ is to forward all incoming connections to the computer on the DMZ that do not already have a specified purpose. In other words if you were hosting any type of server, such as game server, website, ftp, etc.. You would have to set the computer hosting these servers to the DMZ. Most routers should allow you to choose the internal IP you with to use on the DMZ, I have never seen a router that does not let you specify the address. Anyways on the main subject most modern routers come with built in wireless and the most common routers will have 4 ports for connections with a CAT5 cable. Wireless is usually fairly easy to set-up as most routers have a guide that walks you through it. The only thing you need to be sure to do on your part is to get compatible wireless adapters that will work with your router.
  21. Yea I bought the game the day it came out.Its a pretty awesome game I like it so far, I never played BattleField 2 because I didn't feel like it was a game I would be interested in. One of my friends though convinced me to buy this game with him so we could play online together. It is an awesome game and just to warn you requires a fairly good computer if you want optimal gameplay. At first I was worried that my connection was slow or dropping out because I was getting a lot of lag on all the servers I tried and my I would lose connection to the server every once in a while. Reality is that the servers are still buggy and need a little work on them. They already released the first patch to the game, this tells me 2 things.1. They are extremely fast and efficient at fixing bugs and errors.2. They did not test the game as well as they probably should have. The patch was a major patch and you wern't allowed to play online at all without it so there was obviously a signifigant flaw that came out with the game. However they provided easy instructions to update and I had no problems with the update, it was fast and over with in a few minutes. One thing I noticed is the game did not recognize the installed patch and I had to restart my computer. Not a big deal and it was probably a remote error considering I have not heard anyone else mention this.I love the gameplay, the new vehicles and guns. The only thing that dissapoints me is that you have to play and gain ranks to unlock better equipment. I would have preferred to start out with everything because now people who play often will have a significant advantage over those who do not play as much. All in all I highly recommend you buy BattleField 2142 if you are an avid gamer.
  22. So is there any update on the situation? Are we sure the Xisto people know about the problem
  23. Alright cool I will test out Mozilla Thunderbird then. Thanks for the input guys.
  24. Well I am only in high school so none my applications are "big" as you would say.So JCreator suits my needs, and I recommend JCreator as an IDE to anyone who is starting out in learning Java.JCreator makes small programs extremely simple to code, compile, and execute.
  25. Wow thank god I read this.I was about to spend alot of time figuring out what is up with my website and why isn't the local mail function working.I hope this can be fixed soon, because users cannot register at my site without a verification email and I have been recieving a lot of complaints about this. Are the Xisto administrators aware of the problem? I'm sure they are and are hard at work at fixing it.Just have to be patient I guess.I was not even aware that cpanel had been updated.
