Yordan, you and xboxrulez mentioned to keep a swap but with 1GB ram do i really need it ? ok well m not in a state to ask stupid questions like these nor do i have any choices cause m still a learner so maybe i'll just keep a swap. Infact i think this is what i'll do. Get into windows, use partition magic .. Format D: and change it to Linux Ext2 (am i right about this ?), so now windows wont show D: at all ? then i pop in the SuSe install DVD and when the partition option comes up .. i would be shure that suse chooses the linux partition to install everything including swap etc ? (would it be necessary to just leave it un-partitioned instead of changin it to Linux Ext2 ? .. so linux would do what it has to on that unpartitiond space) .. could you tell me how approx it would show up on the partition option screen, lol cause frankly its all greek to me untill i go into advanced and see the partitions listed with drive letters and space. The "reisf" i dont remember sorry for my bad memory, this word keeps showing up after the partition listed, is it a suse default file system ? Too many questions and all mixed up ! sorry guys .. m trying to make it get into one post as possible. Ok , now about the Gnome and GAIM part, well i use Gnome xboxrulz hope thats not a problem because after reading reviews on a few sites plus asta .. its hard for me to decide which one to choose so after taking the "friendly for begginer" tip of gnome plus seeing it come installed with firefox i thought of going with it . I am still playing around with the OS and looking around AND screwing up most of the things, believe me its not a pretty site .. But Gnome comes installed with GAIM rite? is there an uninstall system ? i think i could do this via YAST ? hope i am rite. I'll just try that out cause the only messengers i use are MSN, yahoo and gmail, but regardless if in future my system gets hanged. The force quit application combination in GNOME would be CTRL + ALT + F6 ? The rest all that you explained mastercomputers was very much explainatory, but unless i sit down and work on it i wont understand a few bits. Can i grab hold of a book or a site where i could start learning commandline linux, i am pretty shure that i could use suse via command line ONLY. So would like to learn that too. In college we had a linux commandline but it was limited to commads like "vi" ":w" ":wq" etc .. these are editor commands .. lol i know pretty lame , but we used them to compile our C / C++ programs (uggh) .. Ok .. its done .. and i think it went fine. I get a Gnome boot select screen at startup .. and when i select windows and get in, i can see drives .. C: , E: , F: ..D: drive does not seem to be shown, i am guessing that its because of the Linux format.I went ahead and plugged in my LAN cable, and played around with a few settings, but finally got the Internet to work. So now i can browse pages .. woohooo. Aight , not so happy yet because i was playing around more and i got into gaim, when i start it up i set a yahoo account and when i try to login it shows me a box that says New Keyring Password. I dont know whats that but i am not able to put a pasword in nor click on anything around the desktop. Its like a system hang .. .. err .. Isnt there sumthing to force quit running programs in linux ? .. Ok well i checked the HDD, and it was running full atleast for 5 mins .. then when i unplugged the LAN cable, the HDD light went off and now the system is still un-clickable ..:)What could be the problem here ?RegardsDhanesh.P.S. I am about to install SuSe as of now, and it is currently installing it. But i am not so shure / happy with what i did. My question is in regard to the installation process and setting up the partition.I have 4 partitions on my 100GB HDD. 40 / 20 / 20 / 20.C: 40 - Windows , D: 20 - BLANK , E: 20 - BLANK , F: 20 - BLANK.While i got into the installation, SuSe prompted me with a proposal and i quiet didnt understand most of what was written. I went to the Documents section on SuSe but they dont have much on partitions. I went into the advanced options and saw all my partitions listed. Everything seemed to look fine there. Now D: was NTFS and i had to reformat it to linux system, which i did. I changed the format to "reis" something and changed the mount point from d/windows to / . after i hit done .. They asked to set SWAP but i did not .. and returned to the main screen of partitions .. i saw 4 changes to be made out of which 1 was in red (format partition to linux) and the rest were sumthing about mounting to /windows in all the drives .. I duno what wrong have i done .. but everything has a first time and so be it, its installing .. Could anyone be kind enough to guide me step wise on installation of SuSe on my D: drive ? setting up the necessary preferences etc.RegardsDhanesh.

"Fun & Knowledge". although with the sites i daily visit. I must admit that asta would have to be one of them, even tho it means just loading the page and browsing the recent topics. I did exactly the same way you mentioned. The only thing is i didnt check the same for other drives. I am currently experimenting the Recovery CD so check out ALL the options and what they do before i start using the laptop and add any important data into it.Just a question off my mind tho. Is it possible for windows to deny access to Program Files and Windows folder .. while sharing ? and open access to the rest of the folders present in C: ? I duno just a security feature maybe. But if they have an option to allow users to edit files then denying access does not make sense.RegardsDhanesh.

How do u make a NEW share ? the default share is right click and enable share .. rite ? I dont see anywhere were a password is asked and i could put in one. How do i share my C / D / E / F on my Desktop to show and browse on my Laptop. I know how to map a drive thats fine .. but ... hope you get what i mean. I need FULL ACCESS. Ohh and for the internet connection, its done. I dont know how .. but after the connection was successful and i could ping the Computers from either one. This is what i get when i type in "\\192.168.0.2\c$" on my desktop .. i have no logon password and only 1 password that i entered when i was prompted to give while installation of Windows.Same goes with the Laptop too. How do i make all my drives on my desktop visible on my laptop ? I mapped the C: on the laptop and when i open it i see all the usual files lile Program Files, Windows etc .. but if i try to open an individual folder say Program Files .. then i get an error saying access denied. Then double clicked TCP/IP went itno advanced setings and set them as follows :IP:192.168.0.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 gateway: 192.168.0.2 On the laptop did the same and these are the values: IP:192.168.0.2 subnet: 255.255.255.0 gateway: 192.168.0.1 I pinged from laptop to PC and from PC to laptop .. both sides are Successful ! Now what ? ..i typed in "\\192.168.0.2\c$" it shows me a non changable value of LAPPY\Guest and a password field .. what password should i type ? i put in the admin pasword .. it doesnt work .. and on both the Laptop and desktop i dont have logon passwords. Hmm, when u say shrink .. u mean you split rite ? Anyways, thankx for that tip .. i'll try it out anyways because what i have now is just an experimental install. My partition now is like 50, 25 , 25. Didnt think of using windows to partition lol. But then again, if i enable SATA right now, i doubt i'll have an easy nite re-installing. Just bought a new Laptop and would like to configure it to connect to my PC for File Sharing and Internet. My PC Details are as follows : Connects to the Internet via a ADSL USB Modem. Cellpipe 20A USB modem. PC has 1 Dlink Network Card (Internal). My Laptop Details: Its a Compaq Presario V5233EA with a built in network card and wifi. I am completely new to the networking scene so please tell me what extra information you need. I have a Cross over cable and i have connected both the computers and it connects. Just that the first time it showed me that it was unable to get the IP Address for the computers and told me to repair it. But it failed the repair too. It would be helpful if someone wrote a graphical with text based tutorial or just guided me to one. Again .. its not Hi-Fi networking, just my Laptop connected to my PC which is connected to ADSL. Need File Sharing to share huge ISO's and Internet sharing, so i can browse all those dirty websites m^e gave me .. Regards Dhanesh.

lol, Yeah shure yordan . Thank You :DI used 5 DVD's for a backup, how ? .. Well the first 2 were used for the PC Restore CD that the laptop asked me to create when i first switched it on. AND .. lol .. the 3 other dvds have a complete backup image of the entire 2 drives. Which i managed to do through Acronis.Well after backup was done, i had to start partition. Guess what, it didnt go well . Actually Partition Magic Detects and does the partition. But the main problem comes when it restarts. Being a SATA drive, it does not detect the Windows OS after reboot. Hence the NTLDR error.I used a hell lot of normal cds to burn boot up dos disks so i could get into dos and fdisk it completly again. But my frustration got more stronger everytime i realized i had no floppy drive. Ohh well .. i used a custom partition program that runs on startup. but it STILL gave the darn error NTLDR. Tries my other option of poping in the Windows XP CD and trying to partition tru it. but after the first screen it tells me that the HDD Was not detected lol.Went to BIOS, and disabled SATA lol. NOW the damn thing can install XP. I went to the compaq site and saw the drivers available for download. Downloaded all of them and just now installed XP and installed the drivers. I dont see any ( ? ) in the Device Manager. So i am guessing that all installation went fine ..... I think ... Till now no problems, and i am working on the networking, but i am nicely screwing up both my pc's with random blind clicks. Wow, thanks for the tip yordan. That means if i have made 3 partitions and i use the restore CDs to put back the OS, it would re-partition the drive and set it to its default 2 disks, 90 and 10 GB respectively. Hmmm, seems like i can use the recovery CD ONLY when i have no choice and it would be my last option. Jeez .. *looks at bitcomet* Well, yeah its Dubai, but more precisely its Abu Dhabi. It is available only at Carrefour Supermarkets around the United Arab Emirates. I called up the dealers of Compaq and HP here, and was quiet surprised to hear them say "We dont have that model yet !" lol, that means i guess Careffour is given the dealer status for the launch of the Laptop and later on it would go to the computer shops. The offer that i mentioned in my first post is only valid till the 22nd of September, so hurry up if you need to grab it Regards Dhanesh. P.S. Right now i am using Acronis Image Creator to make a drive image. I would have used Norton Ghost, but didnt want to take the SATA vs IDE risk. After this would use partition magic and recreate the partitions as i was. Will keep posting as i do Cheers.

Hehe .. came from office and did just that. Aight Its weird .. no Autorun .. DVD 1 DVD Name : 12 Files inside : I386 Folder , PRELOAD Folder , Master.log Total Files : Three. I opened Master.log and this was its content. DVD 2DVD Name : 22 .. Weird ! Files Inside : Same files as DVD 1 Total Files : Three This is Master.log for DVD 2 I was going to partition the HDD tonite but i guess its delayed untill i am completely shure i have the capacity and contents to recover back to original. Another thing, how do i check if my HDD is IDE or SATA ? Someone told me that SATA is hard to detect on Partion Magic and Ghost. It can be a pain. Whereas IDE drives are pretty much simple to work with, basically the ones we used a year ago and i have worked on them. But SATA seems to be fishy, is it rite ? Regards Dhanesh. P.S : Does it matter if i run the PC Recovery DVD on my laptop or my Desktop ? I guess not, cause i didnt find any setup.exe or autorun.exe in the root. I ran the DVDs through my Desktop.

Its 2 DVD's bro .. how can it not be a full install CD ? ok now thats got me thinkin .. how do i check if i can go ahead with the format and re-partition etc with the DVD's i have knowing they are for Full install. Thankx for the Head start Yordan .. The lappy came pre-installed so i made a recovery DVD's first thing. Now since i have the recovery CDs i guess i can do this ?1) repartition c: = 80gb & d: = 6GB with partition manager to a 50 / 25 / 25 partitions ? 50 for windows and 25 for testing and learning suse ..2) after partitioning the drives to the above mentioned sizes .. can i use a standalone cd to install XP ? as in the OEM cd. with sp2 ? or do i always HAVE to use that annoying compaq recovery cd with compaq written all over my desktop and taskbar icons .. i have the idea that a standalone XP sp2 install would take less space than the XP that comes with the compaq system ...3) will the hardware be compatible ? .. yes ofcourse it would .. i know .. but just asking .. need to be shure ...The last time i tried experimenting .. it cost me 1800DHS .. thats almost 490$ .. ... i tried to cut a USB cable and join it with a nokia charger pin ... err .. basically a usb charger .. but homemade .. the result was not pretty .. so u see .. my boredom can cost me quiet alot sumtimes ...4) NETWORKING ! thats a completly different topic .. and will make a new post about it .. but just for the info .. if i connect my laptop to my home PC via a USB cable (male - male) can i transfer and share files or connect to the internet via my desktop as a server .. ?RegardsDhanesh.

I know the days when i used to see people with a Compaq Presario, and believe me, here they used to be treated like sh*t. But that was then, Low Specs, nothing to give away free and no value for your money. I wanted to go for a Lenovo C100 i think, dunot remember the model. But it had the basics of what i needed : 256MB RAM, 80GB HDD, 128 (Shared) [Didnt want this, but no choice $$] .. and the usual wifi, bluetooth etc at a price of AED.3499 ($952.76) (Exact at the time of 2 Months) Now, compare these Presario Configs with Lenovo : I got all this for AED.3499 ($952.76) , and i guess most of you would agree that these configs are WAY better than what the other manufacturers give.
