I have just read the following article. Do you think that the amount of time they spend on the net is ok, too much or not enough? Personally I think that at 10, a kid should enjoy actually "living", as in doing somehting active, more than sitting down in front of a computer screen, but perhaps that view reflects my age (55)?? -----Please use the quotes tag when posting quotes-----szupie

Here in Australia, the government is about to pas new “anti-terrorist” laws, which will include such things as:The right to hold somebody for up to 14 days without charging them. The right to hold that person “incommunicado” The right to jail a person for “supporting terrorism” that will including comments made in emails, on websites etc.As even the meaning of “terrorism” has not been made clear by the government, how can a person know beforehand if he is supporting it? The vagueness of the whole issue is causing great concern here, does your country have, or plan any laws like this?

When you empty to recycle bin, those files are only deleted from "use" shall we say, they actually remain on your gard drive, but you cannot access them. (or rather normal programmes cannot) A programme like Restoration can access them, hence it can get those files back for you to use again. Eraser deletes your files completely. It actually "overwrites" the original file, making it virtually impossible to be read again, it uses aa system employed by the US govt. amogst others. So, basically, if you want to make sure your private files are completely feleted, so that they cannot be reead again by anyone, install Eraser and use it to that end.

I agree with you, its a great programme. It can also erase completely the files in the recycle bin, by overwriting them, which is handy I think. Personally I also use Eraser for deleting files rather than sending them to the bi, it's freeware of course, small, but does a good job, by overwriting the file. Try it out.

Personally I don't think the Windows firewall is all that good, but if it works for you, then fine. I would recommend you to install another one as well, it can't do any harm, and may save you some trouble.

Free Image Hosting I think this goes in this forum
pomjim replied to sirfrancisdrake's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You can also use Opera for photo storage, use of their browser is NOT required! Also, check out Shutterbook a new site that, at the moment is offering premium accounts to beta testers. -
These things happen in any new development, whatever the industry. At least microsoft can afford to lose years of work!!!!!!!!!!!

Opera 8.5 Released Did I forget to say its freeware now ??
pomjim replied to sparx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
First, because, on my machine, it is faster than F/Fox. Apart from that, it is less prone to faults, and I also prefer the overall look, although that is only of small concern. And, it is less prone to being hacked, although I think that is due more to it's small user base than anything else. Overall, it is, for me, just a better browser. If you haven't tried the new free version, I urge you to give it a go, you have nothing to lose, and possibly much to gain. -
Japan is once again pushing for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. I have 2 questions on this subject.1/ How would the Asian countries react? Considering that Japan invaded most of them during WW11, and there is still a hell of a lot of bad feeling about it. 2/ Would it not make more sense to do away with the permanent members entirely? After all, with the use of the "veto" very often the result is either ambigous or no matter anyway.

Drivers Using Cellphone cellphones can maximise accidents
pomjim replied to atm's topic in Science and Technology
There are devices that can "kill" mobile phones, but they are not very selective, they cut the phone off over a certain area, so you would not need to pull over in your car, because the call would not get through to you in the first place.Japan uses them in places like concert halls etc, which is a good idea, and one that should be in place everywhere.Personally I'd like a personal "phone killer" so that I could do things in peace, like shopping, eating in restuerants etc instead of having to put up with people using them all the time. -
For me it's Opera. It is certainly the fastest, or is on my computer anyway. I have no problems logging in on any of the sites I visit, perhaps I'm lucky??And of course, Opera is now FREE!! Which mean less bloat for those who never paid for it (no adverts) so that's a bonus. I honestly expect Opera to overtake F/Fox in the coming couple of years, unles F/Fox lift thier game.

Thanks for the welcome kiwi! Being over the river is very close in this modern world of technology.

Opera 8.5 Released Did I forget to say its freeware now ??
pomjim replied to sparx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Well, I much prefer Opera to firefox, as it is so much faster, and, for me at least, a lot easier to use the way I want it.The only thing that annoys me is that I paid for my copy, but I won't get my money back now that it's free!!! -
25 years old eh? Well, despite the constant slagging off of MSoft, (I do it myself sometimes) I have to say that it was because of them that most people began to use computers, as they introduced ease of use.Mass marketing helped, but it was basically the fact that pre-windonws 95, computer use was awkward, and quite difficult.Windows 95 made everything simple, even a child could use it, and from there it all took off.

I use viovio who have unlimited storage space, and good security as well. If you like flickr, check out this site shutterbook who are just staring out, it's very like flickr, and at the moment they are giving free premium memebership[ out for Beta testers. -
Well, surely erotica will have no more effect on the eyes than any other type of picture or photo? Would not looking at photos of animals use the eyes just as much????This report sounds like a lot of rubbish to me, 'tho I do have some recall of the pope saying that it made you go blind!!!!!!!!!!!

Children have to learn discipline, both mentallly and physically. Without it, they will be useless as adults.I am not against punishment for a child who misbehaves or whatever, a "spanking" does no harm, and never will. What has now happened with the law outlawing any form of punishmnet is like most laws passed in the past 20 years, they go too far. What was supposed to provide protection for an abused child has become the right not to be touched, stupid. My parents loved me deeply, but it didn't stop my father giving me a wallop when I desrved it!! And I'm pretty sure I have turned out a reasonable person.

I use Opera, and firefox will have to improve a hell of a lot to entice me to change over.Opera has a smaller footprint, is easier to use, is better looking (not that it matters) and, most importantly, it's faster. Also, firefox is getting nearly as bad as IE for bugs and security holes, while at the moment anyway, opera is pretty secure. Of course, now it's free that may well change if more people start using it, the same thing happened with firefox when it too got lots of users.

I use either Avate or Opera, so have no need for Google as either a pop-up stopper or a search engine.Besides, the less you have attached to your software the better in my opinion.

Actually you can store .exe files on GMail, with the use of this programme which allows you to use GMail as an extra hard drive! Try it, it's excellent. -
Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail Whos winning the battle?
pomjim replied to jcguy's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yes, GMail Drive is a very useful programme, hopefully they (Gmail) won't do anything to permanetly make it un-usable. I prefer Gmail because it is faster than Yahoo.
