  1. There are two mobile parts in your computer : fans and disks. If you loose a fan, no problem, you change the fan and your computer works nicely again. If your disk dies, you no problem, you change the disk, but you have to re-install and you have lost all your data. So, the urgent thing to do is making a backup of all your personal data (texts, spreadsheets, photos) on an external disk. Then, if course, yes, for a hardware guy it's easy to change a fan provided that you have the spare parts and the know-how.So, simply go to an apple shop and ask them to have a look at your macbook and tell you if the noise is coming from the fan or from the disk, an tell you how much money you will have to pay and how long they will have to wait for the spare parts and how long you will have to stay without a computer.
  2. Sorry for being so ignorant, but... what is a tld ? Tomorrow Lays Down ?
  3. No, I was just telling that saying "this guy did not exist because what people saw was impossible" is a false paradox. This is not really impossible, so this does not prove that this guy did not exist.Maybe he really existed and we must find a kind of explanation of what he did, or maybe he did not exist, but the non-existence is not proven by such kind of argument.
  4. You really can do it. It's a stupid way, of course, mainly because there is no retry in case of network failure, so you don't really know if your file was correctly uploaded. But, yes, if you have no admin permission on a Winblows computer (unfortunately you can meet some in the real life) this method exists, it's better than having nothing. And, no, I did not give extra money for Windows. I bought my computer with vista installed, and when I removed vista and installed Mandriva, I got no money back... But this is another debate, is Winblows free or not, shall we use it or not, can we survive in a Crosoft world... Maybe it would be worth opening a special thread on that subject.
  5. There are ways for walking on the water, especially for a guy able to use high-technology artifacts in these ancient times : fast-walking with helium-filled bubble shoes, water-beam turbines for instance, the noise is not important at this point because it will be seen as part of the miracle. The real problem is that no scientist is able to go back in time up to that moment in order to provide us reliable data.
  6. With my windows XP computer, I used to put my camera pictures an a folder named "Photos", and used this folder in the Windows XP screensaver settings. This worked perfectly. For my own comfort, I organized this folder, adding subolders "last_year", "two_years_ago". This worked perfectly, the random picture chooser went inside the subfolders and displayed the pictures.I also had other folders on other disks, "photos_from_mail", "photos_from_usb_stick", which had links to my "Photos" folder. This also worked perfectly, my screensaver also showed the mails pictures and the friends pictures copied from usb in my "from_usb" folder. Now my new computer uses vista, and all these tricks do not work any more. The screensaver only accepts a bare folder, without subfolder, without links. If there is a subfolder or a link in the "Photos" folder, the screensaver gives an error message saying it cannot display the picture.Do you know a way to override this ?
  7. Hi, DavidDock84Welcome aboard. I hope you will enjoy our forums.I moved your post here, where most probably it's place is.
  8. OK, let's talk simple and direct. @Spencer, you expressed this idea. So, you are in charge of posting here the list of the concerned ftp clients, and I add a poll to this topic.Be careful when you create the list, because if the list only has "1) Filezilla 2) Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 " then the result will be too automatically sugested.
  9. the cpanel included in your Xisto logic plan comes with "Fantastico de Luxe" which has pre-installed phpbb and SMF forums (pre-installed means that a single clik "install" creates the whole forum for you). Here are the options in the left bar in your Fantastico menu, each one opens a submenu which allows installing a new item or managin an existing item : Of course, if you prefer, you can directly download the software (for instance phpbb from phpbb.com), unpack in your website chosen folder and click "install", simply don't forget to create the database and the user first, the phpbb installation program will ask you for the database name and the database server name. More generally, for your website you are managing at Xisto, the database server name is "localhost" (which means that the php programs will ask the database data from the computer which is the local computer where the php programs are running on). Hope this helps yordan
  10. Where did you get your version of L4D ?1) From the store near your home ? Go back to the store and shout. Or read the "system requirements" on the box and see if your computer is big enoug.2) From a torrent ? Shame on you ! Now sit down and cry, then repeat after me : "Never more, I will never more do this".
  11. So, if I am the only one asking today, I will be automatically obtain it.
  12. Please remember our forum rules, as expressed here : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/Namely this : Some of us are newbies, some of us did not have the opportunity to go to school, and our goal is to be helpful for everybody, so be kind when answering a question. If you feel that you cannot be polite, please shut up !
  13. This topic is a little bit short, so it cannot be accepted as a tutorial. That's why I moved it here. Now, two comments.1) Please avoid double-postings, you posted this twice.2) Didn't you happen to copy this text from somewhere else on the internet ?
  14. If you are still interested by this question...The answer is rather simple. You even don't need the access point. The simplest way is to have one computer connected to the internet, and a couple of nic's and an ethernet cable between both. The computer connected to the internet runs a proxy server (privoxy is free and does correctly the job) and the second computer uses the first one as a proxy in the browser settings. If you don't have ethernet nic's in the computers, or if they are not inside the same room, the wifi solution can be preferred. In that case you don't need an access point, you need a single wifi adapter (a USB adapter is currently cheaper than a wifi PCI board), both adapters have to be set as "ad-hoc" (which means internal network without access point). Here also, the computer connected to the broadband computer runs the proxy server program, and is configured as being the proxy in the second computer's browser (IE6 or IE7 or firefox) settings. I hope this was clear, else tell me and I can give more details.
  15. I love a definition of computers I heard a couple of years ago : GIGO - Garbage In / Garbage Out.Which means that the computer is exactly as clever as the program you wrote a couple of minutes ago. If you were clever, the program is clever. If you were stupid, your script is stupid. The difference is, big projects imply several to many persons, so the collective work could lead to something smart.
  16. Now comes my philosophical point of view. The start topic question was "the best database". Your answer concerns "the most commonly used database". This is quite a different question. Let's take an exemple. If I ask : "what is the best language", the answer is obviously "my native language, because it's the one I am familiar with". If I ask : "whet is the most commonly spoken language ?" the answer is "Chinese". This is true. And, of course, from my point of view, it's not "the best language" because it's a language I cannot speak! From another point of view, it's the best language to speak in my office in order to prevent me understanding a secret.
  17. shame on me! I took my calculator again and found the same result as Atomic0. This prooves that, on May 7 2009, 10:30 PM, I was simply sleeping in front of my computer, typing random numbers on my calculator and posting random thinkings on the forum.
  18. First log in to Xisto - Support, and have a look at your " My Products & Services" menu : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Check if you see your hosting plan. If not, the problem is there. if yes, there is another problem, but you still have to report it. Go to "Submit Ticket" (https://support.xisto.com/submitticket.php) and choose Xisto - Support, and give the link to your site and say that the site is suspended, they will unsuspend it rather easily because your muCENTS system is now able to sustain your site. Don't worry, you will see that Xisto people are very kind and very efficient.
  19. Problem self-solved. I have seen a pop-up window saying something like "We detected that you had a problem at boot, can we help you to solve it ?". Of course I clicked "Yes", and I had a second prompt asking my mail address, and I received a mail with the link to a hotfix. I installed the fix, and now everything is perfect. So, in this particular case, I must say "Congrats Microsoft, you did a very professional job".
  20. Did you open a ticket at Xisto - Support ? Usually they react fast.
  21. It seems that now everything is going fluently, as I saw your myCENTS appeared rather quickly and are growing rather fast. So you can feel the way your posting here can feed your hosting fees, and your ordering of a website at Xisto - Support should also go fluently the same way.
  22. For personal purposes, maybe no interest. However, if IT is your job, you cannot ignore databases, at least for backup-restore purposes if you are the system administrator. And if your company chooses db2, you have to cope with it, even for personal purposes you would have chosen something else.
  23. Great, Opaque! It works for me. Thanks a lot. I must confess that typing "Xisto.com/forum" is far faster than typin "Xisto.com/index.php".
  24. I'm so familiar with Xisto's members websites never down, that I'm surprised when I receive a 404 from somewhere.
  25. I guess that you'd rather say "Are you on FaceBook?"
