  1. My opinion is somewhere in the middle of the 2 . I still prefer a normal, big computer, because it easily allows you to replace or upgrade parts (that won't cost you a fortune and are easy to get). Big computer can have big coolers, so it remains more or less silent when you're gaming. Ow, and even tough I stopped doing this 24/7, a big computer can be overclocked .A laptop on the other side is mobile, you can use it everywhere and since I'm at High School now, I do realise that it's a lot more easy to get the papers from blackboard, put them on the laptop and take some notes on it (but paper overrules laptop when it comes to making drawings of something or writing mathematical stuff). Having a laptop means having your data and tools available, everywhere and you're not dependant on a computer (of wich we sometimes run out at school ). Downside are of course the cost and low performance (especialy graphics and hdd in the less expensive laptops) and getting 3+hours of battery life is only possible when you turn everything down. Ow yeah, I'm not to fancy about the keyboards either, those tiny, flat keys with hardly no respons ... don't like it and the weird lay-out and the lack of a numerice key-pad is a miss too. So:Big computers: + cheap+ upgradability+ capability- only available at homeLaptops:+ mobile+ handy+ all your prefs and apps are available- battery- price and lower performance- noise (when doing heavy stuff)- keyboard and mouspad (you could connect a mouse to it, but that means carrying a mouse everywhere and those little laptop mice aren't exactly handy).
  2. You can simply rename it to d:\... , because otherwise, windows would be pointing to a non-existing folder (if you'd MOVE c:\program files to d:\program files). But you should be carefull, first COPY program files to d:\ , then change the registry, reboot, try installing something (normally it should ask you to install in d:\program files\program) and then it's prety safe to delete c:\program files .
  3. I've tried clarckconnect in the past (never with the intention the actualy put a sever in our network, since we don't need it), but I've never got it working right. The album page kept giving errors, the computer was visible, but I've never been able to make a connection with it under windows and a lot of other stuff that didn't worked to well .But I'm thinking about trying it again, just for fun , I've had a linux course at school, so I'm a bit more familiar with things now.
  4. What file do you need to download ? Try googl'ing for the file if you can't find it, chances are high you'll find a good guide on how to configure the thing under linux (I googled for 'speedtouch 330 linux' and found a few good guides, but those were dutch ones since I'm from Belgium)
  5. now I get it . Battery was empty at the end of the re-imaging.Why did you want to re-re-image it, while you could have simply copied the missing file. That would probably only take 10 minutes or so.
  6. There are a lot of things that could cause such failures. The battery doesn't seem to be the problem, since you've alreay replaced that one. Maybe there's something wrong with your PSU. Do you know what caused the power failure ? That might have caused some damage to your PSU or CMOS.Ow, btw. Check the 'Clear_CMOS' jumper, make sure it's not set to clear the CMOS
  7. This would be THE combination for people who want their windowsXP to look like vista. Change the BSOD color: http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=653343 Generate a BSOD: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-fake-a-blue-screen-of-death-2626111
  8. Gallery suddenly stopped working, the only thing I get is: Error: Your Userfile is not writeable . (p.s link = http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ) On the gallery website, it says I have to change the permissions of the albums folder to 777 and then it should be fixed. I can't change the attributes, not in FileZilla, not in Cpanel. This is what FileZilla tells me: Response: 550 Could not change perms on /public_html/jovolka/gallery/albums/.users/userdb.dat: Bad file descriptor The gallery website states that this is caused by an upgrade, so I suppos Xisto did some upgrade, so now I hope they can help me too . Thanks in advance.
  9. ow, one thing I've forgotten to mention about the SonyEricsson phone's. There's this great, free application for managing your phone, it's called Float Mobile Agent (http://fma.sourceforge.net/). It can be used to back-up (and view) sms messages, phone book, agenda ... almost everything.Even better is that FMA shows up as a device on your mobile phone. So you can controll your pc using your mobile phone, great for presentations or when you listen to music/watch a movie in your bed
  10. I remeber that it was possible to change the colour in xp, but I don't know how, or whethet it was a joke.Anyway, RSOD . LOL, it will scare the crap out of noobs
  11. vid card = graph card , it's just a different name.
  12. This is the first time ever that I heard you could simply install MacOS on a computer. I don't want to put money on it, but my guess is that it's impossible to install it on a non-mac computer.
  13. okay, that means we'll get Linux Apps -> Windows ... but what about Windows apps -> Linux ? It's one way traffic and it's just a move to get linux users to windows (because their fav. apps run on windows too).
  14. You think so ? It has an annoying timing when it comes to asking questions. For example the time/date and the network dialogue, they force you to stay near your computer while windows is installing. The unattended method is much better, put the disc in, partition, format and of he goes. When I leave for 15 minutes and then come back, I get a windows desktop, instead of the windows installer asking stupid questions. Another method I always use, is nLite (google it). This allows me to slim down windows by removing useless programms and it can apply loads of tweaks and settings.
  15. Thanks for the answer . I handed it in tuesday and I'm hoping for a something like a 8-9
  16. I'm using both Windows and Linux (Slackware 11.0). Even tough I dislike windows because of their bugs and security holes (not that I ever have had any security problem), I do prefer it because of it's simplicity when it comes to installing and using applications. Most apps you find on the net work perfectly on windows without any problems, installing and of you go. Linux is completely different, most applications have to be built first, that means checking dependecies (that's the most annoying part, when something is missing) and compiling (wich is a slow and boring process). What linux realy needs is unicity. Atm there are so many distro's available, all have different apps and libs installed, so you can never be sure whether you'll have everything needed.Speedwise I'd say that linux runs slower, but that is probably because I'm not using the ATI drivers (ow, btw, driver support on linux is a pain in the *** too, especialy ATI drivers, they are as buggy as hell).I'd say, just give it a try, get some live CD's and if you like it, you could install it next to windows (+ you have a good reason to do a full format and get a clean windows)
  17. Why would he ? It's not like the 3000+ would have any advantage from having high speed memory and he probably won't play a lot of (heavy) games, so the onboard graphics card won't have much advantage either (if the onboard graphics card shares memory).
  18. you're asking for something very specific, because it would not only have to fit around your laptop, it should also clear your DVD and all available ports. I doubt you'll find something (or at least something the is affordable), so my best guess is that you'll have to make one yourself .But most laptops are hard enough so they can resist some shocks. When in use, just make sure it's on a stable platform and when you're walking, put it in a descent bad.
  19. Not necessarily, you delay the software you want to delay, so if you don't want to delay the software for your keyboard or soundcard, then it won't be delayed. Even better, it only shows what's in msconfig too and since there's nothing in there that is realy necessary for hardware to work, you'd won't have any problems with it. @xboxrulz: overhere it realy does make a difference, especialy because my hdd is on the slower side (altough it's only 3 years old), my computer always stalls when there's a lot of disk activity and it does that too on startup. @Quatrux: that's another method . @Levis: That's correct, but you make it sound worse than it is . The only moving parts are the hdd and the fans. Fans probably wear down a bit faster, but they only cost a few €, so that ain't the cost. A hdd will run a lot longer, in normal conditions it should be able to run 5-10 years (normal being, no shocks, no overcurrent, no overheating or high temps).
  20. erm, you want to upgrade already ? I'm now working on my 3years old computer and altough things start to become slow, I still have no problems doing everything I want to do. Specs: AMD AthlonXP 3200+, 512Mb DDR (2.0-2-3-11), Radeon9600Pro, 120Gb HDD (starts to become a bit small and slow ), FDD, DVD, DVD-rw and 100Mbs lan with a single (used to be dual tough) 17"CRT monitor and a stereo+surround setup .
  21. Me: 1 computer working, 1 spare computer, a 486-laptop and probably enough part to build another DX4 My sister: 1 computer working, a second for music and a non-used PII-laptopMy mother: 1 computer workingMy father: 2 computers working, 1 laptop working and 2 spare computerThat makes a total of 13 computer, used and not-used . In total, we have 6 computers in use. It used to be more, but I got a bit tired of having 2 to 3 computers .
  22. You don't have to let it wait 5minutes, my firewall starts only 30 seconds later, I find it not a problem since I only have a firewall to prevent certain apps from connecting to the outside. You might be right about Vista, it's actualy what caused me to search for this nice application. In the services part of the management console I noticed that certain services could be started with a delay, I was like ... I need that in XP
  23. what does the xorg.conf file say about the mouse ? Have you tried running xorgconfig again ? What might help is choosing IMPS/2 (Microsoft PS/2 mouse if I remember correctly) as protocol instead of USB.
  24. The situation. After I enter my password and hit enter, I used to have to wait 30sec to a minute before I could do something because all the other apps were waiting for the startup list to be finised. After some googl'ing, I found StartDelay (http://www.r2.com.au/page/products/), this great application allows you to delay the startup of some programs (and thus spreading the load) and it does work super. My firewall (sygate, great stuff, but a real resource hog) is now starting 20secs later, I've spreaded the other app and I can almost immediately start to work after hitting the enter key .It's realy worth trying.
  25. what about connecting another monitor to the computer ?
