  1. Thanks for your replies. I am just really confused. There's no use of the word Enterprise in other languages used for web development like PHP or Python (correct me if I am wrong). So this is JEE's objective? If I wanted to make "server side, distributed, enterprise" applications I'd go for JEE. Do other languages in web development (PHP, Python) have this sort of objective as well? Bear with me people, just trying to educate myself here. I've been actually developing a web app using Java and Spring on Google App Engine but I am still dumbfounded on the "enterprise" part. Cheers!
  2. The word Enterprise is a bit daunting if you ask me and also a bit misleading. Is that a marketing ploy? You can also build non enterprise sites using Java/Servlets.
  3. I find it funny how actors are paired every so often in movies or at least if one guy is there more often than not the other guest stars. There's Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson (Starsky and Hutch, Zoolander, Night at the Museum, Meet the Fockers, Meet the Parents etc). There's Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider (50 First Dates, You Don't Mess with the Zohan, The Hot Chick etc)and then Adrian Brody and Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong, The Pianist)Funny how I noticed the guy pairs first when I am guy lol. I guess I'll pay more attention to female pairs now hahaha.
  4. Why the switch? Before I was also mulling over minoring in PHP but specializing in Java. But then I I think I've got web development covered pretty well in Java and I want to spend my time learning something better (my opinion) like Python.
  5. Thanks a lot! This is amazing! I have been computer science student for a 4 years and up until now I still can't illustrate bubble sort. I got a high grade for my algorithms class though but I forgot a lot of things after that. Now I can remember better (mental note: bubble sort --> sorting adjacent elements woohooo!)
  6. I am more inclined towards web apps I know my around: 1. HTML2. CSS4. Javascript3. Java and Java Web development (Servlets and JSP).and have some exposure to: 1. PHP 2. XMLOf course a working knowledge of a database system is important. I took a basic course in: 1. MY SQLI am interested to know what how other developers' arsenal here at Trap 17 look like whether one's into making desktop programs, mobile or web applications.I've always wondered about what profile will marketable in the next 5 or 10 years. Any thoughts on this people?
  7. I also use great and beautiful but that's about it really hahaha. I am wondering how one compares women to flowers? Like I said i don't want to sound like I am overdoing it hahaha.
  8. Yesterday I met one of my lady friends for a meeting and she was unusually super girly. She was wearing a dress and not her usual shorts - shirt getup. At that moment all I could muster to say was "nice dress". But really I felt it leaves a lot more to be desired and I didn't think the compliment really sunk in. It's the same in other situations and with other people, I get stuck with using the word "nice" + nice thing like nice shirtnice carnice dresswhen I really want to say something more, highlight the thing that's nice but I am afraid I might overdo it. Any suggestions?

    Java

I know for one Java is used for enterprise systems and I guess that's an example of a large site... From Wikipedia: I am wondering what small sites mean...
  10. Unlike travstatesman who has a lot of identities online, I am having trouble keeping tabs with all of my other identities in different online communities. I am talking at the level of usernames here. Not that I want to have different identities, I actually only want and am struggling to have just one for the sake of remembering. And also because in my experience, it's not easy being consistent with so many identities.

    Java

This might be off topic, Zakaluka, but I was wondering how java compares to two other big programming languages such as PHP and .NET? I read somewhere in TechRepublic that in the next 5 years these are the skills that will make one's resume relevant...

    Java

I have recently been asked to read two books on programming based on Java, which I am going to use in my internship: Refactoring to Patterns by Joshua Kerievsky Test Driven Development by Example by Kent Beck If you've learned enough Java for you to come up with simple applications, also try I mean you SHOULD pick up Effective Java by Joshua Bloch - It's got lots of techniques which really make your code more effective!
  13. Do you guys watch the current season of 24? The bad guys in that season could do just exactly that. They were able to breach the firewall which protects the infrastructure of the U.S. (water, electricity grids etc. ) That is until Jack Bauer got to them! LOL ) I have always thought that the things I watched in 24 would be unthinkable in real life but no.
  14. I am talking about the collect box.. So lemme guess this straight, CSS allows the collect box to rollover down? or is that javascript + Ajax?
  15. Ay, wow that was really amazing! Thanks. You got half of what I wanted with the image-dragging javascript (thanks again) but what about the box that rolls down like it was done in flash? I guess this is where AJAX comes into the picture? Not at all, I am quite a developer myself, but a rusty one
  16. Do any of you guys have an account at DA? I've been using it for almost a year now and I've been impressed with the new user interface:1) There's this thing where you can drag your favorites into a box that pops out on top. 2) Whenever I check new deviations from my friends, each of their deviations seem to load in a box of its own.I am interested to know if you guys have any idea what language was used to implement something like that. I asked a geek friend of mine, he thinks it's written in javascript but I disagree because I've been scouring the net fora plug and play javascript that's similar to the box that rolls down from the top but I can't find any.
  17. It looks like you guys go out to the gym with all these machines. Well I think that's ideal if not for the fact that I don't have a lot of money. Gym costs a lot in our country. So I make do with running and sprinting, a set of pushups and situps. Striker 9, do you have any suggestions for a tight-budget workout? haha.
  18. I was surfing the net yesterday evening when one of my lady classmates im-ed me, saying "i miss you". We had a thing before (forgettable) but it's been ages since we last talked. And this message me to me looked dubious at best. And so it was, and at the end of our chatting, the person im-ing me wasn't my classmate but a whole group of people I know wishing to extract some info from me. And it's probably a lot worse than I thought, I am suspecting one of my really good friends to be part of this as he was hinting yesterday afternoon that something will happen in the evening (with a sly grin). Apparently there's something I know that a lot of people I know would like to confirm and for me it's just sick that they're extracting the information this way. I have already told them a lot of times that I won't tell anyone the info. It is after all my secret and it is so big that it can embarrass and put me down. BIG TIME.From this experience I have learned that I have less friends that I thought I have. My problem aside, what are your thoughts on double crossing? IMO, it's not a good way to have fun.
  19. I remember watching a German clip about Hitler in youtube with English subtitles talking about the state of European football. For a while I thought that clip was amazing until my dad (who can speak German) pointed out to me that the script and subtitles don't match! Unlike you, I wouldn't want to remove these videos even if I have to admit they are , I quote, "trash"! If you ask me, they serve a purpose. For me Prior to my watching the German clip, I was really buried with a lot of school work and watching that clip was a breather. At least for a while I was able to rest myself and my mind. Although I have to admit that video was really shallow but I guess we need shallow things every once in a while. BTw, the comments too are very entertaining.

    A Cheap Joke

I dined today with the president of a company and I had quite a fun time. Being an undergraduate student, I think it was a good opportunity for me to make good relations. I am a bit worried though as I relayed the experience to my mom. Well I have never been on a date before and the president was a woman so it was a bit awkward at first. She asked me how school was and I said it was ok and then we got to talking about the company she wanted to set up. I kidded with her that my dad was interested in becoming one of her managers. Not that my dad needed any of it (My dad has a stable job anyway and he's very happy where he's at) but I said that, honestly, just to make her laugh and to spice up our conversation. Well my mom blasted me for this remark and she thought it was a really cheap joke and a lot of damage has been done. Well I've been giving it some thought and I really only meant it as a joke and not as a "come and hire my dad" plea. I am bit anxious right now. Any thoughts on that?
  21. I don't want to comment on the black holes. Obviously nothing's happened so far. But I seriously can't get over the Gordon Freeman picture. It's so funny, I am telling all the bro gamers in my im list! Maybe we should throw in this suit he had and a crowbar!
  22. I don't go for popular players. I am like an arsene wenger when it comes making a team. My other criterion include cheap salary and transfer money I like German Teams and right now my team is stuttgart. Try getting one of the Bender twins from 1860 munich they go all the way to 84. R.Schwabb from SC Freiburg grows to 80. Marko Marin from Borrusia Monchengladbach, need I say more? hahahaLukas Opiela >> just try searching for his name.
  23. That would mean Futbol will be like basketball already which I don't really like. I have to agree with you. Futbol is really simple to play once you get the hang of it. IMO, All this bickering over using replays to judge fouls, offsides, whether a goal is a goal or not all boils down to one simple rule: Fair Play. Maybe what's better is more football styles. Basketball has streetball. I'd like to see a street football culture pretty much like we have street basketball. I think it will promote the game more and make it more interesting. Then we can start talking about rules.
  24. I opened my computer this morning very excited about checking my email but to no avail because till now I am having a hard time connecting to gmail and google. I already tried a few things like1. reset my modem2. virus and malware scan my computers but as I found out it's not only a problem in my pc. It's a problem in all of the pcs here at home as well. We're all connected to the internet via a wireless hub (linksys). Well recently I found out that the firmware of our hub is corrupted (meaning people could connect to our network and use our internet) and has to be changed but I wonder if that corrupted firmware has anything to do with me not being to access google. It's either that or google is having some problems which is unthinkable for me. Any other thoughts people? thanks.
  25. Thank you everyone for your replies. Thanks! Yes I am aiming for a pure CSS design because as I've mentioned earlier, sites like Yahoo use it. I learned layouting using <tables> by studying Yahoo's code when I was much younger. Layout gala looks very cool and useful. It's already 3 am here in my country ( and I have class at 8am! haha) so I just quickly skimmed the code of some layouts and as I've seen, some of them, correct me if I am wrong, still use that type of layouting where you specify <div> boxes for instance this much pixels away from the top and this much pixels away from the left. This bothers me a bit coz for instance if I wanted to center a <div> box on my browser and say it, for example,it should be 300 pixels away from the top and 300 pixels away from the left, it wouldn't look the same,as in the <div> box won't look centered, on a widescreen laptop and/or screens with different resolutions. How do you resolve this type of problem?
