  1. i) I would have written commodities instead of things but many people might not know what a commodity is. ii) Not in my opinion. A want is not usually related to a specific good or service. For example, your want maybe to buy a good car. This want can be fulfilled with a Toyota Corolla or a Mercedes Benz. In the later case, you are going for luxury, in the former you are not.
  2. That is true. I used to play with it a lot. But I don't think a website should be made on Flash only. I even think the splash page of KS should not be a Flash page. Another side note, you can't go 'back' and 'forward' in a Flash-based site. You do that. This is the biggest TiddlyWiki I have found: http://www.tiddlytools.com/
  3. Rightly said. Portfolio site can easily be based on Flash without problems. As a side note, two other Flash problems are: saving pages off-line, you have to save the whole .swf SEO, although many solutions are available I remember seeing a blog made in Flash once. It looked great. But lacked search, tags and categories, etc.I tried to make one like it too. But it got very hard so I gave it up. Right again. And that is kind of how I meant it.For example, try using TiddlyWiki: http://tiddlywiki.com/ Its a great piece of software. But it has made my browser unstable even while using offline. The good thing about JavaScript is that it doesn't require a server-side software. It even runs perfectly well on mobile phones. Again, very true. Web sites should be based on standards. They never get old. Although, coming up with a creative design could be more work then.
  4. A footer at the end of a page is like the full-stop after a sentence. Just like a header is the capitalisation of the first word at the start of a sentence. I think that a page looks incomplete without a footer. However, this depends on the nature of the page. If it is just a splash page with a sitemap, it would not need a footer. But if it is a content based page, it should definitely have a footer with at least these few things: link to home page link to about page link to privacy policy page (if applicable) link to contact page link to sign in or register page (should be in the header too) name of the site you are on Some of these may not be applicable for personal sites though
  5. I have studied a lot of web sites for their designs. The best place to get inspiration if FWA: https://thefwa.com/ Here are my conclusions: 1. Don't use Flash unless you really have to Although Flash allows great design and functionality, not everyone can access your site that way. I remember that when I had my website in Flash, half my friends weren't able to open it. That was because they used a computer from school or work, both of which have many reasons to block Flash Player from the system. Another reason is that you cannot update your content on the fly easily. Of course, you could add data fields and XML, but that isn't a very easy thing to do. 2. Don't make JavaScript based sites unless you really have to Although JavaScript is very useful everywhere, huge scripts can be very slow to execute and make the browser unstable. Smaller scripts are fine, but whole site relying on JavaScript is not. In addition, some people don't have JavaScript turned on, more so because of all the script blocking add-ons. 3. Make it content based Although design is very important, unless you have good content on the site, the only thing your site will be visited for is its design. Which means one visit per person = not good. 4. Don't base design on your mood If you make a design based on your current mood, you won't like it when your mood changes. So, you'll have to make another one. And the cycle will continue. Instead, base the design on a general theme that will represent you throughout your life or a major part of it. (Applicable for personal sites only) 5. Do it for fun If you design your site fun, you'll enjoy it more and put more effort into it.
  6. I will choose PHP. Because: Its open source There are more software for it, like Wordpress, Joomla, etc. Most of the hosts offer PHP, since its free PHP means Linux hosting, which is more reliable as far as I know PHP has a really cool, recursive name!
  7. I had this discussion with a fellow KS member another day and I've been thinking since. Its been pretty confusing. The question is: Q Should we limit our luxury to contribute to the general good? Now, before anyone answers that, read these three points: Luxury means things after your needs and wants. Not limiting our luxury is not necessarily a selfish thing. Limiting luxury is not equal to no no luxury.
  8. I totally agree with that. Islam also sets a similar rule.If you go after money and riches, you will have to do a lot of bad things, in most cases. Like bribery, murder, etc. Not everyone has to do them, of course. But consider all the mafia bosses and the corrupt government and police officials. The things they do for money are pretty ruthless. Again, seeking wealth for our well being, satisfying our needs and a bit of fun is not bad. Its when you indulge yourself so deep in it that you forget the God who gave everything to you. If He takes it away, what can you do about it? Nothing! We should keep that in mind. And for the last part, "you can only serve one master", this is also very true. The Holy Quran, the Holy Book of the Muslims, also say the same thing. Therefore, rich people can go to heaven. The money doesn't help or restrict anything. Its the way how we earn the money and how we spend it that matters. If you earn money by robbing people and then spend it all in the casino, well, you ain't going no where. But if you earn your money by a legal, white collar job and spend it to feed your family, give them clothes, shelter and all their needs, you are a good man. I do not agree with that. My father was so poor that he did not have electricity in his house. Now, thanks to God, he is very rich. We have houses in 2 of the best cities in the country. Have 2 cars, good computers, mobiles, appliances, etc. etc.And he is an engineer. So his way of earning it all was not bad at all.
  9. So, I wasn't the only one who though about this. I did think of it by myself though. I think I did mention that I was talking about the perception of time passing by and not the actual second length. Ok. Now you are talking about time zones, like the difference of time between countries. That isn't what I meant. Time zones are a totally different thing. They are there because of the different times the sun shows up on a specific part of Earth. As for going at 70% the speed of light, you are still considering clock times. I meant the passage of time.
  10. Person A is walking. He is sick and sad and depressed and has sweaty clothes and failed a test/performed bad at work and was pranked by school/office mates. Person B walks along and says: Hey, man, how are you? Person A: I am ok. That is the most common lie. We say that everyday to so many people!
  11. I was thinking one day, sometimes when we are doing something, time passes by very quickly. Hours might have been spent and yet we feel like only a few minutes were used. At other times, even five minutes passed so slowly. So, I posed a question: Q. Does time passes by at a relative speed? If yes, then what is it related to? That is for everyone to answer. Note before that though, I am not about how long a second is relative to the speed of light. Rather the psychological feeling of time. Here is my answer: If you notice, you'll see that time passes by more quickly when you are doing some work. And even more quickly if that is interesting work. By work, I mean an activity; it could be playing a video game, writing a business report or eating. At the times when you are not doing any work, time passes by slowly. And even more slowly when you actually want time to pass quickly. For example, when waiting for some one to arrive or a show to come on. TV ads look especially longer too this way. Now, when we are working, we are using our brain on some task. Lets assume the brain can handle 100% work. And we are currently using 50% on the work. 30% is being used on our inner thoughts. The rest is observing the environment and, more importantly, the passage of time. This is so because the work we were doing was not THAT interesting. Lets stop that work and move on to something we like more. Now we are using up 85% of our brain on the work. This gives less room, 25%, for inner thoughts; explains why you forget lunch during a hard day at work. There is no room left for the environment and time. Third scenario: you are sitting on your couch, nothing good is on the TV, you aren't hunger, thirsty, sleepy, talkative or 'anything else' and there is no one with you. All your brain can think of is the environment and time. And some inner thoughts when any pops up. Now, lets see how we would observe time in the three cases: Case 1: You looked at the time at 12:00 and worked for an hour, noticing the time now and then; hence. keeping a normal speed of time. Case 2: You looked at the time at 12:00 and worked your butt off till evening. You looked out the window and said, "Wow! Darkness already!" You totally lost track of time there. Case 3: You looked at the time at 12:00:00 and then at 12:00:05 and then at 12:00:12 and then at 12:00:21 and so on. You notice every second tick by and keep a very 'accurate' speed of time. This means in case 1, speed of time, according to you was normal but, in fact, it was faster than actual, like in case 3. And in case 2, you just lost track and time flew above your head. Therefore, I conclude that: A. Time is relative to our brain activity.
  12. I can't agree more. Our legal system has way too many loopholes. It makes it really hard to get justice. Even if the law exists, the time period involved in getting results is far too long.Somewhat off topic yet interesting incident:I know a person who was kidnapped by a guy. Gladly, the kidnapped person was by giving ransom. In the struggle to arrest the criminal, one police officer was killed. Later he killed one of his friend for a car and also killed his own wife. Now he's been given a death sentence AND a life sentence for the last cases. As for the kidnapping, the case is still on. Its been about 2-3 years now.I mean, the guy is already sentenced to spend his life in prison AND he is to be hanged after the last case is decided. Why not do it now?
  13. That is a very good solution, actually. Try out good actions for a while and if there is no improvement noticeable, let 'em have it! Yeah, sometimes, people are different with different people. But their nature does show at one point or the other. I agree with the jail systems. It just wastes the time of the criminals. Doesn't really help.
  14. Hmmm...yes, that seems like a good idea. But then how do you decide when to move over to the next stage?
  15. I have similar beliefs. Islam also teaches to do good to everyone; but, sometimes, you do have to be tough to tell the other person you are not under his control. Thank you. Yup, I meant normal people. But in a different sense. You are right, sometimes people need to bring out their accumulated bad feelings to feel better. However, some people are just bad by nature. For example, people who tease others daily in school, homes, etc. Once in a while is OK and fun but being disturbed daily is not very entertaining. They are the kind of people I was talking about. Not specifically pranksters, but the bad by nature people. Thank you again. I also believe in being nice to everyone. However, there have been instances when people give a hard time to you or your fellows and don't give them their rights. I don't like people like those and think they don't deserve our nice behaviour. Every man reaps what he sows. So, if you are way out in being bad, you should be taught a lesson, both by people and God.
  16. I second that. I had Adobe CS3. When CS5 came out I had bought a Mac. So I got CS5 for it. The result:Some new features, but not worth switching from CS4
  17. Sounds plausible. Otherwise, I don't think a dream will kill you. And I haven't ever heard of such a death.
  18. I love to visit the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. They are the most peaceful areas in the world. Although, you'll have to be a Muslim to enter them.I also like Munich in Germany, especially in the Autumn season, when all the roads and paths are covered with brown, crunchy leaves. I like its museum too.I also like the northern areas of Pakistan a lot, especially those with a river or lake, like Kalam. From the place I have not yet gone to, I would like to visit Japan to see its neony high rise skyline.I will also like to visit a snowy area, like Siberia.Perhaps the plains of Switzerland will also make for a nice trip.
  19. Hmmm...seems pretty nice. But I was told that for losing weight, you had to run slowly but for a looong time. Otherwise, it will just build up your muscles and you will not loose fat.
  20. I was wondering, treating everyone well is a good thing in all religions, cultures, sects, races, etc. etc. But what about our behaviour with a bad guy? What I could conclude was: 1. Being good with such a person may actually change him mentally. He may see things differently when we are nice even after his rude behaviour. 2. He may get more motivated. He will think that he has dominated the other person and can now talk to them in anyway he wants. What do you think? P.S. I understand that things are done differently with children to teach them. I am talking about grown-up, intelligent people.
  21. Thats not good. I always check the expiry date. Again, storage is not the drink's fault. Anything handled like that would go bad.
  22. I learnt all my programming from cheap, old books. Its always good to have professional help but in case of decent software programming, you don't really need one.I say you buy Robrt Lafore's Object Oriented Programming with C++.Making 3D games is not that easy, but upto small, 2D games, it can be done without any help. A good book and internet is all you need.
  23. It would be good to know when you are going to die. You can prepare for it. Do all the things that you always wanted to do.But its will be pretty sad when the dying time comes, especially if you haven't told anyone. To think they don't know they won't see you again...sad.
  24. Well, of course, there would be life elsewhere. However, I am not sure we'll find any humanoid living beings any time soon (I could be wrong).
  25. I agree with that. But thats not Coke's fault. Its the drinker's fault.
