The Best Version Of Windows

With all the different flavors of Windows, what in your opinion is the best version? Win95, Win98, Win98SE, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP, Vista, and even remember Windows 3.1?I hear that hardcore Windows users are in love with Win98SE for some reason? Is there any justification behind this? I mean this is a version of Windows that is definitely not supported anymore, but is the security and stability of this version that much better where it doesn't need support?Personally, I really like Win2000 over any other version. It seems more secure and stable, and I'm pretty sure its still supported.I really don't like Vista at all. My one friend tried the beta version that is currently available, and he had it on his computer for all of 3 days before going back to WinXP. Vista is such a memory hog and everything seems "too" overdone.If I forgot any other versions please feel free to add them in.

I would have to go with Windows XP just because it has the "prettier" GUI interface than Windows 2000. I was a huge Windows 98 fan, but when I switched to XP on the laptop, my mind was made up. XP rarely crashes on my system :(Vista I would have to give it a try. Didn't install it yet. Heard a lot of hype about this new version but in the end, it looks like they only added a few "new" features like the docking system and the 3D flip feature (which I heard is buggy in itself).Forgot any versions? How about Windows ME? LMAO. Now if I had a choice between Windows ME and 98...it will be 98 all the way. Too many horror stories with ME.

Personally, I really like Win2000 over any other version. It seems more secure and stable, and I'm pretty sure its still supported.

ofcourse i used all microsoft holes "windows previously" versions, i was going ok with windows 98 SE and windows 2000, they are both were ok to me, i used since the early one windows 3.11, i used windows millinium and now i'm forced to use windows XP because of some accounting work which i need Microsoft Money to finish it, i used even both profissional and home edition, you can say nearly used all microsoft products, never got rest with any of it, but the best one of these bad products was windows 2000, it's more stable, more secured "though it's full of holes", more safer for resources and much faster than windows xp but at all, i would advice you to throw microsoft products out from your machine and you will begin to get your pc at the best case, specially with linux, it's just an advice, no offense.

I think some people preferred window 98 is because that was the last version intended for single users. All the versions after 98 came with network capabilities which caused all sorts of problems. When people updated after the 98 version, most people regretted it. Many people didn’t upgrade for a few years after. Although now 98 isn’t able to support most of the software out there, so you really don’t have a choice.

I had Windows 98SE for the longest time and loved it.The only reason I got XP is because all these programs and games were coming out and saying "Compatible with Windows 2000/XP only.The reason hardcore windows fans love 98SE is because it had less bugs, better security and stuff. Yes its a horror, 98SE has better security then XP, but go figure its Microsoft, they are moving so slow its backwards :unsure:Anyways I've been experimenting with Linux, or at least trying to experiment. I havn't managed to get my computer to boot off of a Linux installation yet but I'm almost there.I just ordered new computer parts, I am going to put together a computer that just uses linux. Probably turn it into some sort of server later, because even if Windows 98SE was an awesome version of Windows, it still sucks.

I think for me the best of the crappy windows was 2000, but XP is alright when you configure it for yourself with extra time and software, besides it is newer, even though 2003 or 2002? is old, because it is 2007 after 5 months, so it is almost 4-5 years old and Vista currently sucks and makes me laugh. Sometimes I call XP the same 2000 except for a new cool GUI with some extra unneeded things which just eat more resources :unsure:An I know some people use 98 I always ask why and they say because on 98 a lot of more games works without any problems, but as I am not a gamer I don't really care, I think they talk about older games, which does not work on XP or even 2000..

I like XP the best. I've never had any trouble with bsods, crashing, locking up or anything with any of the windows from 95 to xp. I think most of the time, the issues come up with people using poorly made software, using out of date drivers or ones not compatible with their os version, or incompatible hardware.And right off the bat XP has better security than 98, simply because it can use NTFS.The one thing I wish xp had was the ability accept more than 10 network connections at once.

Best version? I've got to say that'll be Windows 2000, but I haven't used Windows for quite a while.I usually use MacOS X and Linux.xboxrulz

I like XP. In fact, I would say that Microsoft did a really good job with XP when compared to the other versions. Of course it still crashes, BSODs and has hell of a lot of security holes, but IMO the program handling, ease of use and multi-tasking are miles ahead of 98.

My brother keeps saying 98 is better, but I attribute that to his having less experience with XP. Besides, 98 is outdated. NTFS is definitely more efficient than fat and 98 has no support at all for it. One of the most irritating things about 98 is having to reboot for every small thing .... change the IP address? Reboot! Installed Office? Reboot! Of course, XP also asks for reboot, but that's only in the case of older programs which will run even without a reboot and Anti-virus programs which is expected.

I have had DOS, Win3.1(1), Win95, Win98SE and WinXP (and few hans-on with Win2k, WinME and Linux).Worst of the list was WinME, it's not only plain ugly, but it's the worst one when it comes to stability (crashed after installation ).For speed, I prefer Win98SE, it's light and simple (same goes for Win95, but Win98 is an upgraded Win95).When it comes to hardware, I prefere WinXP, plug&play has never been that easy (hardly no drivers for USB stuff needed), altough it's not perfect (but what is ?)Win3.x was great too, I liked it a lot back then (I couldn't work with DOS, I was a bit too young back then ). I think I'm going to dig up my Win3.1 floppies (yup, still got the whole thing on floppy, I even have some office apps on floppy ).DOS, couldn't work with it back then.My conclusion is WinXP, it has several features that I can't miss today (image & fax viewer is one of them, but also hardware support, most support atm, ...).Last but not least, LINUX, it's great, but it's too hard and I'm too lazy atm (things take to much time to be done on linux, it takes me a week to do something on linux while I can do the same thing on windows in a day).

Haha-The best version of Windows is Linux.Seriously- Windows is only good if you really must use it (i.e. school computers, work computers, certain applications). Linux is twenty million times more reliable and stable than Windows, not to mention it comes in every flavor of the rainbow!Plus, you can use OSes like DamnSmallLinux on almost any computer. If it's just your PC, everybody recommends you switch to Linux.

Never tested the Vista, but Windows XP with SP2 is the best way to have a safe place to work. And I do remember the old days I used to spend in Windows 3.1, I was only 9 those days! Kept all day long playing in the PBrush and other strange apps.

I too remember playing with paintbrush, back in those days it was like a wonder . Aaah, those old days .

I've forgotten to mention Vista, I've tried and older beta version (beta 1), but I didn't like it at all, M$ made this version too much for the 'new' users. I don't need all those explications, tips, hints & txts (same goes for SP2), I know what I have to do and I know what I'm doing (that's what I now like about Win3.1x & 9x, no annoying and useless hints & tips).

With the right apps, windows is almost absolutely stable (I don't have virusses & other crap and the only crashes occur due to hardware (overclocking) errors). The same conclusion can be made for linux, if you malconfigure it, it won't work, it just depends on what you do with it.

I'm currently using Windows XP - but as far as Windows OS goes - I'd have to say that Windows 98SE was by far the best I'd every had. Infact - it never crashed once in the 5 years that I used it. Now, that's saying a lot for any OS. Also, it was very simple to administer - and considering it was the first OS I'd ever operated, it worked out just right for me. Then again, at that point in time I'd usually be using only one application at a time, since I was inexperienced at multitasking on the computer and I was also mainly concerned with content production on Word, using spreadsheets & where absolutely necessary presentation applications or web page design. Windoes 98SE never let me down with these. Again, the system I was using was 700 odd Megs of Intel CPU with a mere 128 MB RAM (which was great in those days) and to top it all - a 2 GM Hard drive. I have a bit of appreciation for Windows XP professional too since, now a days, I'm always multi-tasking with upto 10 applications open at any point in time, on a machine with 1 Gz processor, 55MB RAM & 20 GB hard drive. (and I'm not evenconsidering the 30 odd processess running in the background). The hang rate is pretty low and I'm yet to actually face a system glitch (which has required me to actually have to dig into the system to figure what went wrong). Windows XP has been doing me great service for a good 5 years odd now, and I've yet to actually suffer for it.
